My father is a huge fan of american traditionnal music, so I showed him this video. He liked it a lot, and ever if we are French, I can swear he knows what he talks about. You earned my father approval, and of course mine. 😉
I can't stop watching this every day for over a week now but not the whole thing because it is so heavy. The eye movement side to side 0:15 is chilling. I was born and raised far from Appalachia, in Hawaii a completely different culture and it is a profoundly important to my identity. But I've got roots that go back to the 1700s in one Appalachian valley and some of my people are still there. The old mountain music, the older the better, the ones that go back to the 1700s Scotch-Irish, speak to something profoundly old and deep within my soul - and I didn't even grown up around it.
North Carolina here. I’ll second this motion as I am in western NC and dead in the middle of Appalachia’s blue ridge mountains. Most beautiful place on earth to me. And I’ll set further motion to take pride in our Scotch-Irish accent and colloquial language
@@Dontbustthecrust no music is borderless. But the fact remains unless you’ve walked in an appalachians shoes and never hiked the blue ridge trail or been to Linville gorge, and were raised around the old timers you never truly understand what it means and why songs were written with a certain POV. Just like I love intelligent hip hop (Del , MF DOOM) but I will never truly what it feels like to grow up in Watts or NY as a black man. I’m glad you appreciate it as we’ve seen times where the “ol dumb hillbilly” is the butt of the joke, and seen good, hardworking, people taken advantage of. So it’s the old walk a mile in someone else’s shoes deal , but I’m glad you seen the beauty in the tone that was formed from oppression, and hard lives. Thank you for that.
@Brit Sehnsucht and I’m still on the homestead. My new place, the old shotgun house built in 1908 and a fully hand hewn log 2 story home and many hand hewn barns. That hand hewn is 200+ years old and not a nail holding it together other than the tin. And doesn’t leak a drop. My family were all arrested by the g men and a great uncle even escaped jail in a small coal car. Natural springs and creeks and still old stills laying around in the woods. I used to be embarrassed as a teen of my accent but now it’s a badge of honor. Thanks for the awesome reply
I found you a few weeks ago, diving down a UA-cam hole looking for a song my Papaw used to sing. Happy to say you made me restring my banjo for the first time since college! So good! You make me miss my home in Tennesse. 🙌🏻
Greetings from next door in North Carolina, I can play guitar but a banjo is a different instrument. I know some people pick on banjo playing but it's not as easy as some may think. His cover of O death I came across brought me here.
If I could play the banjo and sing like this I would constantly do it to amuse myself. Dont know what it is about the banjo and folk music I cant get enough. Great job!
I have a collection of folk music from the early 1900s through the 30s, recorded on tinny old-timey equipment so that voices come through like banjo strings. There's a distinct feeling of nostalgia and reflection that carries through that music, and speaks to bygone Americana. I haven't heard anything in a long time that reaches that level - listening to this song was almost eerie because it reminded me of that folk music!
He didn’t wear those gloves to make the outfit work, he wore them just to flex how good he is. I’ve tried playing guitar in gloves and it’s damn near impossible. I know the banjo is different but they’re both string instruments. Great job! 🔥
That's what I was thinking. I don't play so I can't say for sure, but that certainly seems like it would make it damn hard to play. Especially since those gloves didn't even fit very well. Pretty baggy. Makes my cynical side wonder if this audio was recorded separately from the video. Though it looks pretty legit.
At least for now. As the technology develops, especially in genetic engineering, the gap between poor and rich increases as they can have insane advantage when it comes to health, life expectancy and so on.
Good luck finding music like this on a radio station this day in age truly beautiful the singing is very old fashioned wish you could here this stuff more often
My kid loves leatherstocking. She absolutetly refuses to call him clinton hicks, or leatherstocking, but god damn if she doesnt need to hear "skeleton man play the banjo" every day.
Please don't stop Clifton... Your desire to continue the Appalachian history and the reservation of the music is so inspirational ... I CANT STOP LISTENING TO THIS SONG...... HAUNTING...
So there i am watching doom metal videos and cooking shows with the odd kitten video here and there and this i find in my feed, being a sucker for anything with a skull in it like i am i couldn’t resist. I’m so happy i did and you have a new fan in me now. This is so far out of the wheel house of what I listen too but its just as refreshing. 🤘🏼💀
Get drawn back here every day, bounce between this and O Death, many thanks from New Zealand Clifton. Benjamin Tod and The Lost Dog Street Band brought me here.
Sending ❤ from a true off gridder that lives at the bottom of a mountain in the Canadian Rockies. This video will forever be in my playlist. Thank-you 🥰
My favourite song to listen too as a walk my dog through the local licheyard in the morning mist. Would love to hear a banjo version of the "cruel wars"
there is something so so raw about the banjo - the man in the skull mask - and the song laying it out there that you will die - no matter what its coming for you in the end - that evokes a weird emotion - a little melancholy but also a reassurance i guess???? either way its awesome - i like many others have mentioned in the comments stumbled upon your channel via the god-tier algorithm but now i cant get enough - thank you

Just commenting, again, to show my love to Ol’ leather stocking.
Шикарно! Прямо погружаешься в темные времена )) Раз 50 прослушал!
this deserved to blow up and glad it did, as someone that found it a few years ago and comes back to it when in a certain mood.
I think Old Leather Stocking is Awesome....Bring him back Please
So, yeah, I've listened to this song on repeat for a while now. Its still awesome 10/10
Really digging the Leatherstocking output. Sometimes it's the simplest ideas that rock. There's something about the combination of that minimal / primitive style and tone of singing that cuts deep into my psyche. More please.
Hes good
My father is a huge fan of american traditionnal music, so I showed him this video. He liked it a lot, and ever if we are French, I can swear he knows what he talks about. You earned my father approval, and of course mine. 😉

Amazing. All of these Leatherstocking songs hit you deep.
This is beautiful story. The repetition of being covered in cold red clay shows how definite death is for all of us
Love the slightly muted sound the gloves produce.
Illusion.
Delusion.
Confusion
Conclusion
Listening to this song for the first time in 6+ years unlocked a buried memory that stings like a good drink
This is very appreciated. I agree, I'd like to hear more and the songs all be very old or obscure.
Should it matter who you are or where you were raised or who your ancestors were to appreciate a genre of music?
Come home to Tennessee, it's still amazing.
Greetings from next door in North Carolina, I can play guitar but a banjo is a different instrument. I know some people pick on banjo playing but it's not as easy as some may think. His cover of O death I came across brought me here.
Sounds like where I came from...not a lot of people will understand. Cold red clay covering my boots weighing me down
Very intense and wonderful video....not easy to play a banjo with gloves!!
If I could play the banjo and sing like this I would constantly do it to amuse myself. Dont know what it is about the banjo and folk music I cant get enough. Great job!
I love the sound of the banjo. Good stuf.
Imagine coming across this on a nice afternoon walk. Just turn round and walk slowly away.
Brilliant though😊
I have a collection of folk music from the early 1900s through the 30s, recorded on tinny old-timey equipment so that voices come through like banjo strings. There's a distinct feeling of nostalgia and reflection that carries through that music, and speaks to bygone Americana. I haven't heard anything in a long time that reaches that level - listening to this song was almost eerie because it reminded me of that folk music!
The side to side eyes cracks me up and makes this video for me aside of course of the great song.
You truly are one of the greats
There you are at a million views outstanding Bring out the old ways of the mountain folks in song and music great job.
Steve Martin used to make jokes about how Banjos sounded too happy to make a sad song. He was clearly ignoring this kind of music
This sonv isn't sad.
i like this song a lot. it has a good message. death comes for all, rich or poor, ready or not.
At least for now. As the technology develops, especially in genetic engineering, the gap between poor and rich increases as they can have insane advantage when it comes to health, life expectancy and so on.
I come back and listen, every day.
The fact that you leave the drone tuned to major, even though the rest of the song is in the minor key, kind of makes it sound even creepier
Good luck finding music like this on a radio station this day in age truly beautiful the singing is very old fashioned wish you could here this stuff more often
I'm a lucky man I get to enjoy 88.7 WOBO they play some good old stuff once in a while but you gotta wait cause of their schedule
That is the best skull mask I've ever seen!
i love traditional Celtic!
foundations of Bluegrass and the Blues.
you are top notch Sir!
that WAS powerful. And creepy. My hair stood up. Sounds like that have been with us since the bad old days on the Anglo/Scots Border.
HAUNTING...
This is the most uplifting shit this punk rock kid has ever heard… and I’m 51
This is what I’d expect to find on adult swim at 2:45 am after I ate way too many mushrooms and I’m absolutely here for it 🤙🏻
Here i find myself again, listening to this song for the 100th time and its still better every time i do it.
I just started the same journey yesterday...
Would love to hear a banjo version of the "cruel wars"
nice
His eyes are incredible
there is something so so raw about the banjo - the man in the skull mask - and the song laying it out there that you will die - no matter what its coming for you in the end - that evokes a weird emotion - a little melancholy but also a reassurance i guess???? either way its awesome - i like many others have mentioned in the comments stumbled upon your channel via the god-tier algorithm but now i cant get enough - thank you
