.@@tomdale1313 When Martin talks about driving screws down he shows an old brace and bit and mentions he got the idea to use that from Shawn James. Shawn James has his own show on living full time alone in the bush called "My self reliance".
Hello Martin, I’m a new subscriber that recently discovered your channel. What a wonderful place to visit both for you and for me. Thank you so much for sharing, I really do enjoy the videos. I hope we have many more years of enjoying your paradise. I live in the woods in western Washington where civilization has slowly crept in around us. I doesn’t look like you will have that issue there! Thanks again Martin. John
Really nice to see you working with the portable mill, Martin. Perhaps you'd check out Dave Whipple's workings on his "Bushradical" channel? Great stuff, and Dave has a gift for thorough, simplistic teaching. God bless...
If you have a chance you need to mention to the people that do not know what you saved. A lot of us guys and gals that are back yard carpenters know what each board would cost at a lumber yard. You saved a lot of money, milling your own. Thanks once more for the entertainment.
You could cut any angle you want and still have a better board than what they sell at the big box stores 😂 gotta go through 25 2x4’s to find one good one.. that’s a great simple rig. Hope all is well
That's a pretty cleverly designed system, and it seems to be perfect for your needs up there at the cabin where electricity isn't really an option but a chainsaw is. Not to mention putting that fallen tree to excellent use. In fact, I bet if you were pressed for needing lumber, you could probably get more board-feet out of the remainder of the trunk, maybe not as much, but then plenty of firewood from the leftovers. I applaud you for using what nature provided herself, rather than having to cut a standing tree. That's excellent resource management and logical thinking. The great state of Minnesota should appoint you both Guardian, and Ambassador to the Northern Forests . If it were my call, it would come with a modest salary too :)
First, the field cutting was excellent. Cutting the log from where it fell saved tons of extra physical work. Second, this was only the second time you used this system. I be willing to bet the next time you do this it will come perfect.
I do not know what chain you are using, but a ripping chain works better on the mill than the usual crosscut chain used for felling and bucking. Those mills are wonderful when you have a log that is too big for a one man lift, then when milled one man can lift the planks. Great channel. Thanks for the video.
Martin, you and my dad must have gone to the same school of chainsaw technology. Love the simplicity of the chainsaw sawmill. My dad's go to for lumber as long as we could find the right sized logs.
Two films today, you are spoiling us, Martin!! Your mill even gives you a project for when you get home, perfecting getting everything straight and level. My thoughts were a long bolt with a few nuts strategically placed to wind in and out to level your guide board, perhaps??
Wow, what a great tool that sawmill is. It's interesting that you follow Shawn James as well. His is a great channel too. Both of you resolve challenging situations in creative ways that suit your needs and the materials at hand.
thank you because I needed to know the guide board has to be level, I messed up twice before watching this and just figuring it out now because of your video.
Martin I have a small granberg mill but I think it is the same one Shawn James has! Have not had time or The will to set mine up! Hope to have a platform built by this fall! A praise to share, my health is not that great but it seems that I am working harder, and enjoying it! I also think I am losing some weight! Thank you for this video and all your help on a many subjects!
I love your vids, the UK is such a small island that we don’t have anything that compares to what you and Shawn James have achieved with your land. I always look forward to new posts from you.
2 uploads at once... woohoo! Thanks Martin. Much enjoyment was had tonight... Those mosquitoes seem very affectionate at this time of the year in your area... thanks again. Paul.
@@TheNorthwoodsman1 Deet works great but it is scary stuff. I had Deet on my face and answered my home phone a few years ago (the kind you hung on the wall) and the Deet melted a print of my cheek into the plastic.
Great video Martin. I am inspired to dust off my Granberg Alaskan Mill and make some boards from some spruce trees on my property. All the best. Godspeed.
I chuckle every time I see that homemade cart of yours, but although it may be ugly, it sure does get the job done! Glad to hear that you also watch Shawn James! That Edging Mill is the cat's meow! Looking forward to seeing the cabin floorboard replacement this fall. Thanks for the double-header today, double the pleasure. Stay safe.
Nice to see you again Mr. Woodsman! 🙂 🍁 This reminds me of the saw mill that we have down in Brooks, Oregon at the Western Antique Powerland Tractor Show! It's one of the largest tractor pulls west of the Mississippi. My father has been the President of it ever since I was a kid (is my age showing?) Let's just say the show has been taking place for over 40 years! 😉 It always falls on the last weekend of July, and the first weekend of August; just like clockwork. Anybody interested in attending has still got enough time to plan a trip for the event! All are welcome. Well, when my father was younger ( in his 40's - 60's) he was in charge of running the old saw mill, ran by STEAM of course, and us kids would watch how the saw was ran, and I was amazed at how many men it took to run the whole operation of it! Your set up looks like a mini set up of that saw! LOL Very mini! Aww, thanks for capturing the little beaver! I wonder if when they "chomp" wood if they make that same sound the chain saw makes? "ZZZZZZZZZZZ"!! LOLOL🤣 Say "HELLO!" to your bride, the beautiful Mrs. Woodsman for me, and I do hope she is in good health. 🙏 Bless her ❤️ Thank you, Sir, for sharing this awesome video. So good to see you again! God be with you, Washington State 🙏💖🙂💐🇺🇲
Another great video Martin. And i just want to say that you have the best log cabin on youtube. It's just incredibly cozy and full of warmth added to by your great character.
I milled a good size chicken coop from a large downed white pine with this same set up.For saftey Martin always try to pull the saw into the tree.Another great vid Brother
Great job Martin! Extremely educational, I have been free hand cutting and it’s difficult. I looked at the Alaskan mill but I think I like this better. I’m going to look into getting one of these. Thank you for taking the time to make the video and sharing this!
For my use this worked out well. I like cutting the lumber out in the woods and using the root ball to help steady the tree. I was going to cut a lot of lumber off logs hauled to the cabin the horizontal mill may have been better.
Thanks for that, I am thinking about picking up a little chain saw mill to make some beams and such for a couple of jobs i want to do around here. Thanks for sharing.
Whenever you're cutting your law work into slabs throw a couple ratchet straps in your kit to pull everything tight together so you can utilize the whole log as support so your Granberg Mill take a couple ratchet straps start your cut then put the straps on after you start to cut
Nice tip. I have a lot of cutting to do and want to make a platform of some kind to smooth out the operation. I added the larger Granberg for all the additional slabbing I need to do. Thinking about a 16 foot aluminum ladder to serve as the guide rail and for use later as just a ladder.
This is an older chain saw mill. It is an older model. I have seen people use small pieces of 2X4 dirlled into the but end of the log. Level the 2X4's and then the 2X10 will be set also. Keep it up. Interesting video.
Understand. Are you using a ripping chain on your chain saw. I have the next generation of this mill and another thing called a beam maker. For God’s sake be careful. Thanks for the response.
Interesting....I am shearing cedar trees in my pastures. I wish I could mill some of it. I look at some of those big tall trees and just hate to see them go to waste
Great job! I have one of those and it has been so long that I forgot how it works. I am missing the aluminum angle due to a move 35 years ago. I do have some 1 inch steel angle and will be that instead. Thanks
Granberg sells the rail in two foot sections. May have a hard time getting a perpendicular cut with 1 inch but it would still work. Next Sat. morning I will be using the bigger Granberg Mark IV and the edger as in this video.
You never cease to amaze me. You're just handier than a shirt pocket. Fascinating to watch.

Out of all the cabins I have seen on UA-cam your's is my favorite, as is your videos. It's always kind of sad when you leave.
America was built by doers like you. You have my respect.
Oh ya and thanks for lowering the chainsaw noise for us watching in bed late at night
You are welcome, so easy to tone it down.

I enjoyed your video Martin. Another good screw to use is a Robertson. Square head. They do not strip easily. We use them a lot up here in Canada.
