Pacific Rim got snubbed at the Oscars. I know Gravity's effects were amazing and all, but why didn't Pacifc Rim at least get recognized while The Lone Ranger did?
That's why i love this film so much. It's one of the most badass movie ever made. No matter how much you hate (or dislike) the story and etc., you can't hate how amazing the effects are.
I cannot praise ILM Visual FX enough for what they do on this channel! As a young man who wants to be a part of the film industry, I really like how you give us all a taste into what its like behind the scenes with both VFX breakdowns and commentaries from the men and women who actually create the effects! Thank you and keep up the good work!
A century of cinema has brought us here. This features incredible work from every department. Sound, pre-production, production, post-production, etc. Getting this done in just over 2 years seems totally insane to me, so if any of you are still alive, buy yourself a few drinks. If you've been paid, buy yourself a vacation. You fugging deserve it!
YAY! I loved Pacific Rim! You'd better win the Oscar this year. But then, the Oscars are crap. You've got a figurative award from me for being the best! ILM for the win!
I wonder when CGI companies start hiring the screenplay writers, actors and directors and start owning the movie instead of the other way around. They already do practically 80% of the movie.
So basically you're waiting for a day when a salesperson is going to take over a shop? Because technically they are doing 90% of the work. No matter how good they are, they will always be just the guys who do the effects, and if they get cocky, quite soon new ones will pop up.
I absolutely love this type of behind the scenes (deconstructing a scene, CGI models, etc), but to break 2 years of work into a 3-minute video.... (even aside from the extras on the blueray)
One has to recognize and thank you guys for not only show the behind the scenes but go out of your way and prepare such amazing breakdowns of the scenes. Trully inspiring. I thought I'd have tons of questions, but everything is so clearly shown that it's almost a tutorial. This left me with a smile on my face. Hopefully there will be a sequel to the movie so I can see more of you guys work. Congratulations!
wow that was quite amazing. Unlike other movies I felt immersed in the visual effects of this movie. You guys played a key role in that and that makes me happy. Top notch is under-selling the talent that went into this movie.
I hope someday I work on a movie as epic as this with people as talented as the team from ILM Great stuff guys and girls =] I could watch your breakdowns and VFX vids all day.
Could you guys make a video like this showcasing the water effects of Pacific Rim? they were truly phenomenal. The water brought the whole film to life in my opinion. I'd love to see how the Battle for Hong Kong scene in the harbor was done from different perspectives
I loved the lighting effects and that everything felt weighty. The only effect that I thought was kinda weird was the jiggling on the Kaiju the Aussies killed early in the movie.
Beautiful! And thank you very much for posting this. I haven't loved a movie like this in a long time. May I ask a question though? Is the panelling on Gipsy Danger's chest hull physically modelled, or is it a mixture of textures, normal maps/ displacement? Thanks again!
A little dumb question. I am pasionated about VFX but I don't have enough hardware to deal with anyway; what softwares do you use , commercial software like autodesk or maybe custoum software. Not need to say that your team is one of the best in the world. Sorry for my bad english, i am spanish
Dude, most of the programes they are probably using are expensive high-end 3D software, and for the audio? There's plenty of demos Vegas has that they can easily play back whenever they want, they just have to position the audio in the 3D scene so it all matches and done!
i know it wont happen but you could you guys upload something from your earlier work? like when you were first introduced to cgi? That would be so awesome
This is such a tease, you cut at the worst possible times lol. Nuclear detonation? Fist going through building? (granted, there was some practical in that shot iirc) Cherno's destruction? I want so much more...
Best CGI I've ever seen.
Pacific Rim got snubbed at the Oscars. I know Gravity's effects were amazing and all, but why didn't Pacifc Rim at least get recognized while The Lone Ranger did?
This here should've won the Oscar...
I absolutely love videos like this. Flick was a blast.

Gotta love the effects!! One of my favorite movies of 2013!!!
wOw it's a whole art.. great job!

They didn't really build giant robots then?? :O

is going to take over a shop?

No matter how good they are, they will always be just the guys who do the effects, and if they get cocky, quite soon new ones will pop up.
Am with u
ILM and WETA are the two top CGI-for-movie companies as of today
I absolutely love this type of behind the scenes (deconstructing a scene, CGI models, etc), but to break 2 years of work into a 3-minute video.... (even aside from the extras on the blueray)
So basically, we're watching a really good 3D cartoon.
Eyegasm
AMAZING!!! BEST MOVIE EVER!!!

i'm still even amazed after watching this! I just loved robots fighting a giants O_O
Spectacular Work. You never seem content to stay where you are, but to keep pushing; it consistently shows. Thanks for the VFX breakdowns!

Saw this on my new 3d Tv. Great job at CG effects!!!
I think this movie has the MOST photo-real CGI scenes I've ever seen
wow that was quite amazing. Unlike other movies I felt immersed in the visual effects of this movie. You guys played a key role in that and that makes me happy. Top notch is under-selling the talent that went into this movie.
You guys are the best

I hope someday I work on a movie as epic as this with people as talented as the team from ILM Great stuff guys and girls =] I could watch your breakdowns and VFX vids all day.
Amazing work and really great effort by the whole team
Inspiring...
Are you gonna do a longer one with interviews like the one you did with The Lone Ranger ? It was great anyway, keep up the great work !
Oh god, this is amazing!!!!!
What the humans are doing is just adorable and fascinating

This is amazing! How many people tend to work on shots like these ?
Awesome! RIP computers which had to render this
Amazing, as always!
You guys are incredible! If there is an eight wonder of the world, then ILM has got to be it ;)
Increible video!! Simplemente impresionante! :)
This is awesome, we want more!! By the way, is the 3D model Jaeger as complex as the Transfomers?
Very cool looking. I think a pacific rim inspired anime series would do very well.
Thanks very much for the video. The demolition simulations were jaw dropping. In house software or rayfire?.
Astonishing. Just to get an idea, how many people are in each team? Modelling, rigging, animating, etc...?
Beautiful! And thank you very much for posting this. I haven't loved a movie like this in a long time. May I ask a question though? Is the panelling on Gipsy Danger's chest hull physically modelled, or is it a mixture of textures, normal maps/ displacement? Thanks again!
I hope you guys had as much fun making this film as I had watching it!
I'm learning how to do some of this in school using 3ds max… i think i might switch majors now
This is some seriusly epic VFX work. BTW, how long did it take to render the scene at 0:48?
I wonder how much time did the fluids simulation took... Great stuff!!!
Simply gorgeous.
I did not know that this was made by light & magic, great ^^
Its amazing they make the metal look real even though its not metal at all
Esta es mi película favorita y ver como se hizo es realmente increíble!! :'D
Incredible!
This is sooooooo fantastic!!!!!
You guys are the best !
Insane!!! and very inspiring!!
This is AMAZING!
I know that 3ds max is used daily at ILM. However, more specifically, how often is Thinking Particles used?
Frickin marvelous
Effects contributed
No Oscar nominations for Pacific Rim.
Today... they have reinstated THE APOCALYPSE!

That... is... A W E S O M E.
No one is considering making Mazinger Z?
Great job
This is such a tease, you cut at the worst possible times lol. Nuclear detonation? Fist going through building? (granted, there was some practical in that shot iirc) Cherno's destruction?
I want so much more...
i would love know how long each shot takes from start to finish ?
very awesome ,1 question what software did you guys use for 3dmodel animation also render?? maya??? or 3dmax ?? or other software??
