Behind the Magic: Building Jaegers for "Pacific Rim"

- The story of "Pacific Rim" is told on an epic scale, where 250-foot tall combat mechs battle similarly sized giant alien monsters in the ocean off of the coast of major cities, and when that fails, in the cities themselves. Scale is a recurring theme throughout the film, where a large threat is countered with a large response, making humans tiny in this new out scale world.

I think the robots in Pacific Rim look more realistic than than the Transformers ones.
of course mechs..movement is stiff..while robots............well some is pretty much the same thing hehehe..

Just awesome work overall for an incredible film. Can not believe this visual effects crew didn't get nominated for the 2013 Oscars, cause this group was the best of the year in my book.

I noticed that the oldest jaegers name, Cherno Alpha, has a similar name to Chernobyl, and the head resembles a nuclear power plant. Was that intentional?

Crimson Typhoon probably should come back if possible. His head was ripped off, but the body seemed fine. I would like to make a suggestion. His head should be bigger and better protected, not exposed and easy to attack like it was in Pacific Rim.

@CheeseRender there are many reasons why visual effects artist use different polygon types on models i use triangulated mode to get smoother edges with less segments within reason but ilm may of used that feature for an entirely different reason
Hi ILMVisualFX, im deciding on a career in VFX but would like know the type of working hours in this industry? I've heard extremely scary stories at CG forums that people in this industry must be prepared to work 68 hours a week or even 7 days a week with 7 hours of sleep each day for up to 75 days consecutively. Also there are no benefits in this industry such as medical, leaves etc and when you get to an age of 60 you basically would not be fit for such tedious lifestyle and would be force to quit, living you jobless and poor. Is this true in this industry? If this is true visual effects employees wouldn't even have a chance to spent their money and spent time with their family.. I would really like to know and would appreciate if you could reply to this comment. Cheers!

Actually it's because Jaeger is German for Hunter, something that was chosen far before Alex Jaeger got his hands on them

Then did you kill about half of them you could have saved their death until the end
if there is more kaijuu. there would be a possible rebuilded jaegers in the script.
