The lyrics you read all reference sailing terminology. The person in the song is taking sailing journey to Papeete, Tahiti on a boat that is 80' at the waterline (big boat). I take it he is on the night watch looking at the Southern Cross constellation of stars and pondering his life. As a person who has spent some time on a sailboat offshore at night, I can attest that it can be a spiritual experience to just sit and ponder the night sky and endless water as you sit for hours on your watch. Beautiful song.
My husband and I watch several sailing channels and would love to go around the world on a catamaran, which I know is not actually meant for the that but so many are doing it and have already done it that it doesn't scare me. However, we are almost finished with our campervan and all the solar and batteries, I believe we could power our house if need be. You never know what life will throw your way and I'm not ruling sailing out. I'm so happy for you to have had that experience!
@@tammieparrishmiller3669 That sounds wonderful Tammie. I say just do it if that's your dream. There are many mutltihulls sailing the seas. Just plan and prepare. I am glad we did it while we were quite young. I was 21 when we started building our boat (my husband had been planning it much longer). We spent 4 yrs building the boat, working and building up our cruising kitty., Then 18 years living aboard, cruising and spending too much time tied up at the dock, working on other people's boats when we ran out of $$. We were just kids and were willing to work hard to achieve our dreams. It was a wonderful experience and I have not regrets. Good luck !
Steven Stills wrote the lyrics on David Crosby's sailboat The Mayan....it was actually 74 feet long....sailing down to French Polynesia.....trying to get over his divorce from a French singer songwriter....if you want the back story to this song.....here it is....this music was written by the Curtis Brothers along with a few of the lyrics.....ua-cam.com/video/TNEpFrOWooE/v-deo.html but here is the real story.....ua-cam.com/video/Z6apmDCDV64/v-deo.html
The Southern Cross is a constellation of stars.....“Southern Cross,” by Crosby, Stills & Nash, is a song that encapsulates the themes of love, heartbreak, new beginnings, and healing through the metaphor of a sea voyage.... The song is about using the power of the universe to heal your wounds
The Southern Cross is a constellation of stars in the Southern Hemisphere.....hence the references for islands in the South Pacific (Tahiti and The Marquesas). Nice comment btw.
think he can figure that out. why are you telling him what a southern cross is...implying he doesn't know and can't figure out the meaning behind the song?SMH
The music video is set on a sailboat, and that’s the key to the lyrics. The Southern Cross is 4 stars in the sky in the southern hemisphere used by sailors for navigation. (Check the Australian flag 🇦🇺 and New Zealand flag 🇳🇿) Steven Stills wrote this post divorce and after a long sail through French Polynesia (mid Pacific, east of Australia) Stills is quoted “It’s about using the power of the universe to heal your wounds” This song was based on a 1970’s demo of a song called “Seven League Boot” by The Curtis Brothers.
This was likely my intro' to CSN (conscious, on MTV -I was born in 1969 -realized that I had heard other CSN, and became a fan, of each man's music). I traveled to Australia, with my Parents in 1986, for a 2.5 week tour around the nation. And, "that's the Southern Cross!" the north and south hemisphere' of Earth see stars differently, and seasons, and even water rotation. I've sailed on lakes like in the Tetons, the Great Lakes, ferries up to Alaska, to Newfoundland, Cruise Ships in the Caribbean to many locations, in the Mediterranean -not a sailor, yet experience out on the open Ocean, when land is seen, or only water and the land appears at the horizon, ...this is brilliant introspection, with music chorus.
It is about his love of sailing and using the metaphor for life and love. This song is about ALL THREE....a woman, music, and a love of life! Yes, again you nailed it!!
A geographic love song for sailors/seamen.Most of the things he is talking about in the song are places along his sailing journey, the terms are jargon for seamen.Waterline(how deep the boat sets in the water),sailing a reach before a following sea(to have your vessel go in the direction of the waves) and the downhill run from Papeete( is the wind direction being behind you and (POP A Ate Tay) is the island direction it is coming from)) Avalon, I assume, is Avalon Bay, Santa Catalina( an island off the coast of California). The song talks about the beginning legs of the Coconut Milk Run across the South Pacific Ocean. First stop is usually the Marquesa Islands (Iles Marquises); then through the Tuamotu islands (Archipel des Tuamotu) to Papeete, Tahiti. A bit over 3,000 miles. The Southern Cross is a reference to the stars in the night sky in the southern hemisphere (the bottom side of the world globe or down under ).In the northern hemisphere sailors used the North Star as a positioning point to navigate by(I think) at night.
I do believe that you are correct in all of this. I remember doing a little bit of basic research on this song in the past and you summed it up perfectly. Well done.
I have always loved this song! I went to Peru last summer. My first night in Cusco I went to the roof of my hotel to find the Southern Cross and play this song! It was an amazing sight!
David Crosby had a beautiful Sail Boat, and loved the sea. Sailing at night, looking at the stars, chillin' out. Beautiful song, but I'm gonna keep my old butt on the shore these days. Another great selection Biz, and top shelf commentary that's the most entertaining on youtube.
NOBODY sang perfect harmony like CS&N! I learned to sing harmony in my youth singing along with them. "Sailing a reach before a following sea (winds across your deck and the waves coming from behind you, instead of coming at you head-on), She was making for the trades (trade winds) on the outside, and the downhill run (south) to Papeete (capital of Tahiti), Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas (and island group), We got eighty feet of the waterline (the length of the boat at the waterline), Nicely making way" (moving forward). These are all maritime sailing terms. This song is a lament by a sailor at sea about a lost love.
Wow. I haven't heard this song in a long time, and I forgot how much I loved it. Such great harmonies and images in their lyrics. I definitely have to do some backtracking and get some more music from these guys on my playlists. Thanks for bringing out an oldie but goodie; hoping some younger folks hear this and take a look back at some of the great music from earlier years.
One of my favourite CSN songs. I'm glad you played the album version, which has an extra verse which adds a lot to the story. The Southern Cross is a distinctive star constellation here in the southern hemisphere (and on my country's national flag). The first verse is talking about a yacht travelling south through French Polynesia. A tale of lost love, and of accepting that sometimes you need to lose love to grow as a person. The line "we never failed to fail - it was the easiest thing to do" gets me every time. The album's title track "Daylight Again/ Cost of Freedom" is a hauntingly beautiful track too, and adds to the vocal magic by having Art Garfunkel as guest vocalist.
When he sings “I have my ship, and all the flags are flying. She is all that I have left and music is her name “. He is saying he named his ship Music.
My absolute favorite CS&N song. I've always loved nautical themes, tall sailing ships, lighthouses, schooners, legends, etc. Each member of CS&N, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, are outstanding on their own. Stephen Stills also sings one of my favorite songs, "Love the One You're With". For another seafarer's song check out "Brandy" by Looking Glass.
The Southern Cross are constellations that form a cross and can be viewed from most of the Southern Hemisphere. People who sail the seas use the Southern Cross to help them navigate their boats. You should watch Crosby Stills and Nash's video of this song. They are sailing, and it makes the words make a little more sense.
If you are from the Northern Hemisphere and go to the Southern Hemisphere and look up at the sky, nothing looks familiar because you are looking at stars and constellations that are not visible to you in the Northern. But you will see the Southern Cross immediately. It stands out like the Big Dipper or Orion does to us in the North. I remember the first time I was down that way, in Australia, on the beach at Surfer's Paradise and looked up. Unforgettable seeing it for the first time. You don't even need to know where to look. You will see it.
Excellent choice! Actually David Crosby didn't sing on this. He was capable at the time so Timothy B. Schmit filled in for him. The Southern Cross is a constellation in the sounthern hemisphere, their version of our north star. It was used for navigation on the seas
Biz, the song was written by Steven Stills after his wife left him. He owned a sailboat moored at a home he had in Australia. He set sail, not knowing if he was going to come back alive, or dive overboard to commit suicide in the South Pacific. The Southern Cross is a very famous constellation that can only be seen from south of the equator. Fortunately, while sailing that night he looked up at the Southern Cross, and after long contemplation he decided to not jump overboard, and that music--- not his ex-wife, nor any other woman, was his first and truest love.
on a long sailing trip from California to an island in the south pacific. He realized that he still loves "that woman girl" but doesnt know how to get her back. On a midnight watch (a time when youre sailing the boat but have a lot of time to think) he realizes why she ran away. Now all he has left is his ship and his music. The Southern Cross is a constellation used to navigate when south of the equator. He feels the Southern Cross has shown him the way to understand why he lost "that woman girl". Im a professional captain of sailing vessels and can surely relate to loving my version of "that woman girl".
He's on a fair sized sailboat ("80 feet of waterline, nicely making wake" ) headed South towards French Polynesia and the Marquesas Islands in the South Pacific. HIs reference to the Southern Cross presumably refers to the sort of cosmic awareness a person might get when on night watch onboard a boat out in the isolation of the ocean and seeing the constellation for the first time. Stills said he wrote it shortly after a divorce, so the narrative of healing through communing with nature is pretty clear.
Dig it…glad i subscribed to your channel. I cant remember what i first saw you react to (maybe Beastie Boys, Tool, or something along those lines)…but it wasnt in this genre at all. My taste is eclectic and so is your choice of songs to react to.
Blue Water Sailing song with ramifications still being discovered. That southern island of the Marquises is the island of Fatu Hiva. Approximately 23 days form southern Mexico on a mono haul. You will arrive at the Bay of Virgins. Durning April and May the constellation Southern Cross will be symmetrical. Only place on the planet. A vector through the cross straight to the horizon will be true south. The ancient Polynesians used the Southern Cross to navigate to Rapa Nui. (Easter Island). Recent genome studies have shown that Polynesian DNA is present in Columbian and Mexican native Americans.

There's another UA-cam version of this song by Crosby, Stills and Nash. It shows a video that alternates between a silhouette of them singing the song and Steven Stills sailing a boat. It's alot cooler than the one in this video.
I am not a sailor, but "sailing a reach" refers to the angle at which the wind hits the sail giving the most speed. I hope that is accurate. Any salts out there please correct me if I am wrong.
This song, as good as it may be, just takes me to a bad place. A guy who just couldn't take no for an answer. I was 6 yrs. younger than him and just starting beauty school. He was 21 and wouldn't get a job so he could actually take me to school or even on a real date. I remember this song was always being piped through the speakers at my school and it still brings up bad memories. He actually hung himself several years later. Very sad. Sorry if I bummed you or anyone else out. Peace.
I guess they can scrap any early warning systems that may be in place. The recent quake that hit New Jersey, there was no warnings and the alert systems on cell phones and television didnt report anything for over 30 minutes later. The cell phones never sent a alert to this day! POS. ty
Southern Cross is also a brand of quality sailboats. Classic looking sailboat beauties they are (if you love sailboats as i do). Great rxn vid Biz,tks!
This dude's woman has had enough of his s--t so she runs off. He is heartbroken so he says, "F--k it, I'm getting out of here!" He joins a crew on an 80 foot sailboat that sails around the South Pacific islands. He hangs out in bars in the ports and chases young tail, but he can't get his woman out of his head, even in those beautiful islands.

Love this song

Beautiful song
Love Crosby Stills Nash, lucky to have seen them live back in the day. Please listen to DARK STAR. You will love it! Cheers
I appreciate the listen only reaction - but I would love to see what you think these cats look like! They have a great folk harmony - the best.
Back when they made masterful music. just three guys on stage with acoustic guitars.

this is my favorite CSN and sometimes Y song (Ohio is a close second). Such a good sing a long song too
Stephen Stills was one of the great composers of the 20th century!
he Still (Stills) has HIS MUSIC and his SHIP.....
CSN... These guys loved to sail and the Southern Cross (stars in the Southern Hemisphere) is always used by sailors!

Its making way not wake.
The South cross is a constalation. He is on a boat travelling and thinking about a love lost.
(Southern man) from the 4 way street album .one of the best live songs
Saw Stephen Stills 5 times, twice with Neil Young , twice just him and CSN!!
For a group that did folk songs. This could be the best soft rock song ever.
"To fail is the easiest thing to do". The "Cross" is a star constellation only visible from the southern hemisphere.

art garfunkel was brought in for some high harmonies here; lil know fact.......liner notes rule!
May I suggest Carry On. This band is fantastic!
I remember this but not as well as their others for some reason. Maybe I was working a lot of hours then. It's pretty good.
good catch biz
MY FAVORITE CSN SONG BIZ😊, THIS AND ( WOODEN SHIPS ) 💯

You’re right ! A reach is when the wind comes from the side of the boat and provides optimum speed.

80 foot sail boat
The boat was also named SOUTHERN CROSS so they were also singing about 'her'... ;)
No.
😂with their sound I'd love it if the vocals sounded like
Charlie Brown's teacher.😂😂👊❤️🔥🎶
❤🇦🇺
Rap record!
There is nothing epic or profound about this song, because it’s really just about a sailing trip, however it is still an awesome song anyway
Noooooooooo.Wimpy Wimpy wrong song need 4 way Street Album Carry On
Nope one of their worst song and wimpy....they soldout
