The "Southern Cross" is a star constalation kind of like the big dipper here. It just happens to look like a cross and it is in the Southern hemisphere of the planet.
Listen to them sing 'Helplessly Hoping'. Absolutely stunning in its simplicity, but the constant harmony is a wonderful treat to the ear. No-one like them - before, or since. Thank you.
CSN: Suite: Judy Blue Eyes; Woodstock; with Neil Young: Ohio (massacre of students a Kent State University-Viet Nam war protest" Another band you should check out is: The Doobie Brothers - LIVE - Rocking Down the Highway: The Wildlife Concert - Rocking Down the Highway, Take Me In Your Arms, Listen to the Music, Long Train Runn'in, Black Water, South City Midnight Lady - just to name a few. They rock 🤘 Thanks Chod! ☮🖤
These guys have been together since about 1967. They are one of the greatest vocal groups in history. Every Hippie and Woodstock era person knows who they are. The World knows who these guys are! So many Hit songs and Albums. "Suite Judy Blue Eyes", "Carry On", "Almost Cut My Hair." "Ohio" "Wooden Ships" "Woodstock" and on and on. Please more of these guys.
I remember seeing the Southern Cross for the first time, as a young officer in the Navy in the Pacific off the coast of South America. Relationships were difficult at that time, with a girlfriend/fiance back at home while I was sailing the seas. Such a meaningful song in so many ways.
Suite Judy Blue Eyes is a musical journey. It's so unique, I thought it was impossible to cover well. A group on UA-cam called Fossils and Foxes that does covers proved me wrong.
These guys wrote absolute gems! Each guy is a hall of famer in his own right. Together they were just a supergroup. You can detect their influence on groups like Yes, Kansas, and Styx.
CSN...HUGE “super group” from 1969 onward. Part of the gigantic singer/songwriter movement out of California in 1969.....CSN, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Carole King, Jackson Browne, Carly Simon.....folk rock, sometimes with a country feel. Think The Eagles. Beautiful songwriting, melodies, harmonies. If you have heard of the Laurel Canyon scene....that is what they are talking about. CSN were joined by Neil Young by their second album, Deja Vu and became CSN&Y. This is not “Southern Music”. Southern Cross refers to the oceans around Australia....the Southern Cross is a constellation of stars that can only be seen in the sky of the Southern Hemisphere and is used in ocean navigation. Crosby owned a beautiful sailboat and was an avid ocean sailer. I would suggest Suite Judy Blue-Eyes for your next reaction. Or one of their two most famous songs...because they are both culturally iconic: Woodstock or Ohio. Joni Mitchell wrote Woodstock, but CSN made it famous. Ohio is a powerful song about the infamous Kent State Shootings.
We are so lucky to have been born at a time to experience the greatest period in musical history 60's 70's and early 80's So many great musicians and songwriters we took them for granted and enjoyed their music and then the years went by and faced with today's "artists" you realise how good they actually were ...... and still are !!!!
Kudos! You are one (and probably the only) reaction artist to take this song to the end. The final lyrics tell the point: "So we cheated and we lied and we tested. And we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do. You will survive being bested, 'cause somebody fine will come along and make me forget about loving you, in the southern Cross." Great song, and great point. Love your reactions!
I'm old now.. 64.. but now I actually listen to words of a lot of songs I never really listened to when I was younger and just swayed to the melody. Liking so many of songs stories.. learn about the world and other areas.
I seen them 1995 in a small auditorium in hilo hi. They played all their hits and it was awesome, including this song. I think they were getting ready for a tour. ,such a small intimate concert. Loved it
These guys are always incredible. Their harmonies are angelic, their writing deep and meaningful, it’s impossible not to love their music. Our House, Suite Judy Blue Eyes, Ohio, Helpless and Helplessly Hoping - the last is my favorite song to listen to when I need to mellow out, the harmonies in that tune is pure perfection.
OMG… one of my fave groups. Their harmonies are just the best. This band is considered a Super Group. All left very popular bands and created this band! Neil Young is also part of this group from time to time. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, who is a legend in his own right! Everything they do is excellent. Their harmonies are meant to sound like ONE VOICE!
A great harmonising group with quite a pedigree. All three were in big bands in the 60s: The Byrds (David Crosby - balding, walrus moustache), Buffalo Springfield (Stephen Stills - glasses, lead singer), and The Hollies (Graham Nash - striped shirt, bouncing around the stage). At various points they were joined by Neil Young (who had also been in Buffalo Springfield). Try their songs "Suite: Judy blue eyes", "Marrakesh express", and "Our house".
Suite Judy Blue-eyes for your next reaction to them. Wooden Ships is also lyrically powerful and beautiful melody. it’s interesting to me, as someone who had CSN and CSNY as the soundtrack for my college years, that many young reactors are not wowed by them.....possibly because folk rock has not stood the test of time as well as other genres? And perhaps people no longer have such a high opinion of beautiful harmonies? Chod, you tell us.....because you’re not the first reactor to say this. For me, as a choral singer, it was ALL about the gorgeous, close harmonic blend of their voices....
Thanks CHOD..... brings back so many great memories. Stephen Stills is amazingly creative. He wrote most of the songs + he plays a hoard of instruments and he became a master arranger in the studio.... but their voices together are wonderful.
This is my favorite song of theirs. Phenomenal harmonies! Check out the song "Ohio". Based on a true story of 4 Kent State students killed during a war protest.
I believe Stephen Stills wrote this during his divorce, and all that he ended up with was his sail boat! Beautiful song. TrY listening to “Waisted on the way”. Another great! Thanks hon
all have great solo stuff! go with Graham Nash "Songs for Beginners" also David Crosby and Graham Nash....BBC concert 1970! The harmonizing will make you cry! Your Great Wil B!!!!
Alright now were talking lol! They have alot of great songs, Helplessly Hoping and Teach Your Children, two good ones to start with!! I'm so happy you reacted to these guys!!!!😎😎
The reference to the Southern Cross is to the constellation of a cross, only seen from the southern hemisphere. Stills wrote the song; it tells the story of a boat trip he took after his divorce, to heal and to see the southern cross. Stills was an avid boater.
He sounds great here. I’ve seen him do the anthem before a World Series game recently and his voice is gone. I felt bad for him, but age gets everybody.Thank god for recordings
No better harmonies! These guys are legends! Saw them several times including Neil Young. Do yourself a favor, listen to the audio of Suite Judy Blue Eyes.✌❤
This song was originally released on their 1982 album *Daylight Again*. Several people have suggested Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young's *Carry On/Questions*, from their album *Deja Vu*.
"Helpless" is about a town, Omemee, Ontario, just down the road from where I live. In his younger years Neil spent time there and his father lived there until his death. Omemee is more like a village that's in central-eastern Ontario but I guess it sounded more poetic as "a town in north Ontario". We're cool with that!
Another great Crosby, Stills and Nash you need to hear is Teach Your Children. Find the one that they are all sitting on barstools it’s a really good version.
Ohio is still one of the best protests songs every. They are known for their harmonies. Someone else said the Doobie Brothers, you should definitely go down that rabbithole

If you want to really know what 60’s and 70’s rock music was all about, you have to know CSN&Y, they were one of the very best and most influential bands of the time, and the many solo and other incarnations hold much equally great music, especially Stills and Young.
You need to check out the band The Band. Listen to and watch the video for "The Weight" and "The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down" from The Last Waltz performance/album.
WEll you are getting an ear treat today aren't you between this and Joni singing!! CSN and CSNY are full of tons of greatness and the harmonies are second to none! Also this live version is ok, they are always great live but the audio is special. Check out Stephen Stills solo as well. He was the solo singer here. He is awesomely underrated but the whole band is a super-group of talent. Neil as a songwriter is maybe the most prolific ever. Country Girl / 4+20 / Helplessly Hoping / Woodstock with Joni
"Teach Your Children" is a very good one. "Ohio" while technically not a giant, has a deep meaning as it is about the shooting of student protesters at Kent State University.
"Ohio" is with Neil Young. Great song. Check out Neil on his own , LOVE his music, but his politics I can do without. So many older singers/ songwriters I loved are just ruining everything with their b.s. politics. Shut the fuck up, we don't care what you think. Do your job and entertain u,. So FED UP WITH THESE LYING, CHEATING, WHITE LIBERALS. AND I'M WHITE, obviously NOT a liberal!!!!
IT'S CLASSIC ROCK CHOD! :) THROW NEIL ( NEIL YOUNG ) IN THERE AND THEY'RE CALLED CSN&Y LOTSA LOTSAAAA GREAT SONGS AND NEIL HIMSELF WENT SOLO IN 70 AND HAS A HUGE LIBRARY OF SONGS ALSO :) OLD MAN, HEART OF GOLD, HARVEST MOON, JUST A BUNCHA GREAT SONGS
C S N (and sometimes Y)...were amazing. one of the original 'super groups. Stills and Young from 'Bufallo Springfield'...Crosby from 'the byrds', nash from ;the hollies' . there's so much great stuff to hear with them. they are known first and foremost for their vocalizing...but don't let that fool you....great musicians as well. i could suggest a lot of stuff here, but i'd just say the album Deja Vu. amazing. also....all of them have fantastic solo albums as well
Holy Cow....there is not a bad version of anything CSN ever did. Their catalog is nothing more than one great song after another. You can’t go wrong!
The "Southern Cross" is a star constalation kind of like the big dipper here. It just happens to look like a cross and it is in the Southern hemisphere of the planet.
As seen on the Australian flag
@@DavidB-2268 Thanks I never knew that.

And New Zealand's flag.
And visible out the window from where I'm sitting right now in New Zealand!
Graham Nash was a member of The Hollies before teaming up with David Crosby, who was one of the original members of The Byrds.
And Stephen was in Buffalo Springfield. So was Neil.
Listen to them sing 'Helplessly Hoping'. Absolutely stunning in its simplicity, but the constant harmony is a wonderful treat to the ear. No-one like them - before, or since.

Don't forget "Takin it to the streets!"
Oh, the good lord knew what he was doing when he made the three guys. Their harmonies are legendary.
So many hits, so little time. These men made some beautiful music back In the day.
These guys have been together since about 1967. They are one of the greatest vocal groups in history. Every Hippie and Woodstock era person knows who they are. The World knows who these guys are! Beautiful and uplifting! Amazing melodies, harmonies...musical mastery! Crosby, Stills & Nash!
great pick🙂.. "Our House", "Just a Song before I Go", "Teach your Children" and "Carried Away"🤗
I remember seeing the Southern Cross for the first time, as a young officer in the Navy in the Pacific off the coast of South America. Relationships were difficult at that time, with a girlfriend/fiance back at home while I was sailing the seas. Such a meaningful song in so many ways.
Stephen stills is one of the 10 best singer song writer composers of the 20th century
Absolutely, 100%
Easily top 10
so good
Amen
“Teach Your Children” “Carry On” & “Our House” from this group 🔥🎶🤘🏼
Their harmonies are great, and Neil Young sings with them later on. 😊
Carry On - the most amazing harmonies!
OMG! I never knew that they sang "Our House". For some reason I thought it was another group. I won't name the group/s.
@@bangmon1000 😂
@@lynnhoffman247 I didn't mention the group/s for fear of chastisement.

Their harmonies were……well no words can describe. They sang as one. R.I.P, Mr. Crosby. And thank you.
I dont think there was ever a band that could harmonize quite like these guys could. Unreal

I love what they do with the lyrics in the music together, like, “in a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call you.” Like butter!

“You will survive being bested” - means when someone does better than you, or hurts you etc
Ohio and Suite Judy Blue Eyes by CSN. AWESOME songs.

" Wooden Ships " 👍✌️♥️

"Southern Cross"
Oooh ...
Got out of town on a boat goin' to Southern islands
Sailing a reach before a followin' sea
She was makin' for the trades on the outside
And the downhill run to Papeete
Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas
We got eighty feet of the waterline nicely making way
In a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call you
But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away
Think about
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me larger voices callin'
What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten
(Around the world) I have been around the world
(Lookin') Lookin' for that woman girl
(Who knows she knows) Who knows love can endure
And you know it will
When you see the Southern Cross for the first time
You understand now why you came this way
'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small
But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a comin' day
So I'm sailing for tomorrow my dreams are a dyin'
And my love is an anchor tied to you tied with a silver chain
I have my ship and all her flags are a' flyin'
She is all that I have left and music is her name
Think about
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me larger voices callin'
What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten
(I've been around the world) I have been around the world
(Lookin') Lookin' for that woman girl
Who knows love can endure
And you know it will, and you know it will
Yes
Oooh ...
So we cheated and we lied and we tested
And we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do
You will survive being bested
Somebody fine will come along, make me forget about loving you
In the Southern Cross
