The song is from her album "Canciones de Mi Padre" released in 1987 and was a huge crossover hit. "La Charreada" is from the same record. There's not a style she can't do!!

This album, Canciones de Mi Padre, was released in 1987 and still stands as the best selling non-English language record in US music history. Whatever she touched turned to gold.

Linda Ronstadt is one of the best female singers & can sing any genre from ballads to country to rock & even opera. She has Mexican heritage on her dad's side. Growing up she listened to many types of music, including Mexican music, which was sung by her entire family. She does a great job singing in Spanish. I have her Spanish album called "Canciones de Mi Padre (Spanish for "Songs of My Father"). Sadly she has progressive supranuclear palsy & can no longer sing a note.

As I always assert, Linda has the most beautiful voice on the planet. There’s nobody with vocals as powerful while retaining the welcoming sweetness she puts forth. I have learned that Mariachi music is extremely difficult to perform and she worked very hard to do it perfectly. Sooo good! I would recommend this beautiful live performance of “Down So Low”ua-cam.com/video/D7gCtCWxTYo/v-deo.html. It is so soulful and heartfelt you will feel it deep inside. Thanks for appreciating this stunningly talented artist. 🌺✌️

I think we respond because she is clearly so invested in her father's culture/her Mexican heritage. It comes across as joyful and authentic. Plus, the costumes and setting and band are gorgeous.

I think what you are referring to is what I will call the "catch" in her voice where she changes note - is to me one of her signature talents, and is one of many ways she excellently conveys emotions in her vocals. She sings in pretty much every genre known, from country, to pop, new wave, folk, hard rock, opera, etc. Top Linda choices from me: (1) video of her signing live in studio to "Lose Again" - one of her all-time best emotional vocals; (2) "Different Drum" - studio version of her first big hit in 1967; (3) her signing live to "Long, Long Time" on any TV shows from 1970 or so; and (4) her singing/playing guitar live to "It Don't Matter Anymore" from a 1977 concert I think.

I grew up in Southern California and there was always Mariachi music in the backround of my life. I love hearing Linda singing with this band. Her album "Canciones de mis padres" is amazing. My Spanish is very rusty and limited, but I totally enjoy the whole album whether I understand the lyrics or not.

  • @evanhughes1510
    @evanhughes1510 Рік тому +2

The next Linda songs you should definitely do are Tracks of My Tears (official video), Someone to Lay Down Beside Me (album version), and You’re No Good (album version). Save ‘Blue Bayou’ for a little later, because that one is so overdone among UA-cam reactors, and I think it’s just mediocre compared to a lot of her others…
Her acclaimed 1974 album Heart Like a Wheel would be a great one to do a full album reaction on.
    Other big ones to hit:
Long Long Time, Different Drum, Heatwave, Just One Look, Blue Bayou, Ooh Baby Baby, Hurt So Bad, Tumblin Dice, Willin, Poor Poor Pitiful Me, When Will I Be Loved, It’s So Easy, Faithless Love, Somewhere Out There, The Moon’s a Harsh Mistress, Sail Away,

It’s so cool to see someone who, like you said, doesn’t listen to this music really ever, and really “understand” it in its pure essence!! I have, since I was 5 years old, been enthralled with mariachi and ranchera, and have known its majesty practically all my life! It’s is my heritage. I’ve always wished others around the world, especially our American neighbors, could see its beauty. To see others on the “outside” understand it and not be able to put it fully into words…! Truly incredible to witness. Thanks for posting. Viva la música Mexicana!! 🇲🇽

She made two Spanish "Rancheras" albums with mariachi.
    1. "Cancionés dé mí Padre". 1987
    2. "Más cancionés". 1991
La Cigarra is on album #1 track #4.
These were songs her father loved and she grew up listening to. Possibly her best albums due to vocalizing, tradition, melodies and studio mix sonic quality. Look into them, you'll love e'm.

I'm an old guy, so I really like her recordings with the Nelson Riddle orchestra, singing the 'Great American Songbook' standards, one of my favorites: "But Not For Me". But, FYI: she has done almost everything: pop, rock, country, standards, R&B, Broadway, Mexican (in honor of her father and grandfather, and to honor her ancestry), and she's excelled at everything.
She has earned 11 Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, two Academy of Country Music awards, an Emmy Award, and an ALMA Award. Many of her albums have been certified gold, platinum or multiplatinum in the US and internationally. She has also earned nominations for a Tony Award and a Golden Globe award. She was awarded the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award by the Latin Recording Academy in 2011, and also awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award by the Recording Academy in 2016. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2014, and on July 28, 2014, she was awarded the US National Medal of Arts and Humanities. In 2019 Ronstadt was among five honorees who received the Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievements.

You should watch her documentary, Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice. It shows her learning each Spanish phrase with Ruben Blades to know exactly how to make it perfect. She's done rock, country, r&b, opera, spanish, jazz, pop, and the Great American Songbook with Nelson Riddle (famous for producing Frank Sinatra). My favorite video is the live 1977 performance of Desperado with just her and a piano. Sadly, she can no longer sing now due to Parkinson's Disease.

Do you really want to learn Spanish? Come to Mexico. Learn immersively. In every tourist town there are Spanish language schools that teach by the week. You can sign up for a week or two of full or half day classes. These classes are usually 2-5 students.
Let’s say you do a week of half-day. You’ll probably get 3 hours of classes in the morning and that leaves your afternoons free for exploring, and that’s when you get to practice what you’ve learned. Avoid speaking English. If you are vacationing with another, attend classes together and make an agreement to not speak English together.
By tourist town, I’m thinking of the cultural heritage cities and UNESCO sites, not beach resorts. In the state of Guanajuato there is San Miguel de Allende and the city of Guanajuato (probably more economical than San Miguel and arguably more beautiful). There’s Oaxaca further south and in Chiapas there’s San Cristobal de las Casas. If you prefer bigger cities, there’s the monster itself, Mexico City, but there are also Guadalajara, Queretaro, and Puebla. I’m sure I’m leaving off the list someone else’s favorite.
A two week vacation in Mexico will cost you very little. The current exchange rate (middle of June 2024) is not bad. Many of these schools will arrange home stays, where you live with a Mexican family for a fee that is a lot less than a hotel will cost.
If you can work remotely, do all of the above for a month or longer. The immersive experience really rewires your brain and gets your target language embedded.

When I was a kid, I spent hours studying Mexican music.
I would study the lyrics in Spanish.
I learned vocabulary, translations (Spa/Eng), and would imagine the stories told. The songs would tell about love, betrayal, travels, adventures, and even death.
My mom would notice it and would say that the songs were inppropriate for me.

This musical style requires the singer to sing the meaning (and enunciate) and the feeling (drams and emotion), and you can see how it gave her a solo career as a singer in all the other genres ithat began her career. To have listened to this style in childhood set her up to be able to hold the attention of an audience. It was difficult to be a singer in rock and other genres unless you were able to bring additional talent like composing to it (especially for females), but she could, and once you can do that composers are thrilled to supply great songs.
