Season 7 was utterly crazy by any motorsport standards which makes it very hard to measure honestly, though it was definitely a strong rookie campaign by Dennis. Another statistic I like to quote about that season is that De Vries won the championship despite only scoring points in less than half the races. 16th in the championship Max Gunther actually scored more points finishes than him which is just really bizarre

Jake Dennis is the best rookie he did a great job in 2021 and he got 2 victories including his first home race in London too

Very nice video, you’ve earned yourself a new subscriber!
It’s tricky to say who was better from my perspective, as whilst I believe S7 to have had a superior grid compared to S3, it was probably the most chaotic season in modern top-level motorsport (thank you group qualifying :/ ), meaning that it’s quite hard to say how good Dennis’s third place in the standings actually was. Rosenqvist had a more consistent streak of top performances with a weaker team, although he *did* make a number of errors. Dennis meanwhile performed when it mattered and nearly won the title, though with a heavily skewed weekend format. I’d give the edge to Rosenqvist, although both drivers’s campaigns receive an A grade from me.

Thank you so much! I do agree, while the competition was harder in season 7, Rosenqvist’s season seemed more neat and complete. Subbed back by the way! Your content is so underrated!

I feel like for some reason the overall quality of driving and competence of the teams in 2021 was just lower overall, which explains why literally everyone was very inconsistent. So I think it isn't so much that Dennis had an amazing rookie season as a lot of the other drivers had poor seasons all at the same time. For that I'd have to say Rosenquist. However Dennis showing some serious promise in his first season is undeniable, especially in hindsight.

Absolutely agree. Not sure what it was that year, but it seemed no one could really capitalize, which allowed drivers like Dennis to be inconsistent and do really well. Same goes for De Vries.

Part of it was also the qualifying system. Whomever led the championship at any time would always be down in say 19th on the grid in the very next race and then it was hard to make progress because everyone was so evenly matched

    Excellent analysis.
Such a shame Felix left after just two seasons. He could have done some amazing things and was far better than his replacement Pascal

I absolutely agree. In season 4 he was close to winning at least 2 more races and being in contention for a title. Shame he seems to prefer Indycar, or we’d have seen him back.

Dennis is an interesting one, because the 2021 season was so chaotic. Yes there was a pecking order of sorts but it still felt like anyone could finish anywhere, as your graphic showing the average finishes from that year shows (the champion having the 15th best av. finish? That's NASCAR levels of madness!). It all felt a bit too random at times, inconcistency was rife throughout the grid. Still, two wins and a title challenge which kinda came out of nowhere is defitiely not to be sniffed at, and both wins were great drives, especially Valencia. Honestly, I was more impressed by Dennis' 2022 season (particularly the second half) because Season 7 was such a flash in the pan (and for me, an example of how you can have too much of a good thing after all when it comes to having an extremely competitive and evenly matched field).
For me, Season 7 was a more extreme version of Season 5, and I personally enjoyed S5 a lot more. In 2028-'19 we had a streak of eight different winners in eight races and then JEV won two of the next three and took control of the title fight heading into New York. I loved that narrative, it's like F1 in 2012: seven diffrerent winners in the first seven races, then Fernando Alonso took control and opened up a big lead, then Sebastian Vettel went on a tear in Asia and it came down to a chaotic finale in Brazil. In Season 7 on the other hand, no one ever really took the title by the scruff of the neck, and having over half the field in mathematical contention going into the final round just felt a bit too much. I don't want to say it felt artificial, but it did feel a bit off. I will also note that the extreme fluctuations in championship position we got during Season 7, I'd noticed that happening during the Berlin races in Season 6, with the number of times a driver jumped from 9th to 2nd and then António Félix da Costa ended up with a huge lead over 2nd placed Stoffel Vandoorne (158 to 87). But that chaos paled to what we got the following year!
With Rosenqvist in 2016-'17, the pecking order was a lot clearer and therefore I think his year's a lot easier to judge. Even if he was often the bridesmaid in terms of results Nick Heidfeld was no slouch, as proven by his record in both F1 and FE. Yes, he wasn't necessarily the fastest but he was still a fast driver and, according to an article by The Race a few years ago ranking every FE driver, "a major development weapon" with excellent technical understanding and feedback skills in his arsenal. Rosenqvist beating him was a decent feather in his cap, even if Heidfeld himself admitted that he just didn't have Felix's raw speed.
Overall, I would give it to Rosenqvist. I miss him in FE. I do like watching him in IndyCar but there's no denying he's a bit of a frustrating driver sometimes, although he did seem to have more bad luck than Pato! But I think he really needed to beat Alexander Rossi this year to cement his future at McLaren but he didn't (though I thought Rossi had a decent year overall to be fair; something for him to to build on). We'll see how he does at Meyer Shank.

I think the competition was stronger for Dennis. But the season was also all over the place with the qualifying format so it's hard to compare. But i woud say Dennis was more impressive.
