In 1990 I was in art school in Baltimore. There was a warehouse artist space near campus. Helmet played there one night and their PA broke. They played the whole show without vocals with about 300 art school kids gather around them in a circle. The energy was f*king amazing.
I’ve met Page and spoke with him numerous times over the decades. You’ll never meet a more giving and genuine iconic musician. He’s always more than willing to chat about anything.
Me too. I just walked up to the stage after the show, shook his hand and talked about how I have been listening to Helmet since like middle school. He was so friendly.
Him and most of the band chatted with me and my friends for at least half an hr after the show during their Meantime days, imagine putting out that record but still willing to put up with a bunch of idiot teens after ha, humble genius no doubt, what a champ
1992 Detroit, MI: Ministry - Helmet - Sepultura. I was 14. My first concert ever! I was blown away by how loud Helmet was. The bass drum would just pound your chest! I'll never forget listening to Helmet, skating the Dentist office in Southgate Michigan.
30 years they've been around. Wow. I still remember walking to school and listening to their albums on one of those old yellow Sony Walk man's. When their videos came on TV, I'd be like "hey man, be quiet. It's Hemet!"
Me and my mates used to do ecstasy and listen to helmet,it was like our little secret.I used to make mix tapes of their stuff so we could all get off.Not the same since John Stanier left but I still have the highest regard for Page.
Smash Dalde uhhh, that sounds awesome. When I was in high school, me and my buddies used to go a little overboard with fungii and geek out on Tool records. That's when I realized they're not a sober band and there's something "in" the music--the warm pulse of universal truth. I can also credit that band for introducing to me to Bill Hicks. My life would be radically different without those experiences--a squeegee for the third eye.
Helmet were a huge inspiration while I was in my awkward high school band. We were obsessed with tone and, pre internet, all we had to figure it out was magazine articles and what we could see during shows. My teenage self's mind would explode being able to watch him give a rundown. I also enjoy how mildly awkward he is, no pretense or ego here.
Well first of all he didn’t give it to him he gave it back to PRS and Daniel bought it based on knowing it was played by Page. Second of all it wasn’t a McCarty it was a custom 24
Helmet were one of the most influential bands for me. Along with Sonic Youth, Men at Work, and Dead Kennedys. This was so much fun to watch. Great band.
The 12-13-16 in KC with Local H, awesome show! He said what do you wanna hear? Pure and they played it, after the show he stepped over the monitors and signed stuff talked and answered questions.
Saw Helmet first in '94 and anbsolutely fell in love with Page's magenta ESP! Still one of my favorite guitar players to this day. What a great DTB episode! So great to hear Page talk with so much passion about his rig! Love it! First time I saw his aluminum Paul Reed Smith that I red so much about! This man has played with the biggest artist out there. Such a nice guy! Thanks! Subscribed.
Page is a cool cat and legend. I'm not super keen on the newer Helmet stuff but I can respect not making meantime sound for 20 years, and people change etc. So much history and gear knowledge and just energy to this guy. Haha I love this channel.
woa ... I haven't seen Page Hamilton on media in 13 years ... I think ... he's one of my childhood hero. I read his story from guitar world magazine. good to know he's still with ESP. Didn't knew he's the one who's co-designing "airzone" dimarzio. great story.
early '90, '' headbangers ball'' on mtv show us new bands Helmet and Pro Pain.... almost 30 years later Page talk about his gear and for me this is the best DTB '' Gear Masters'' so far !!!! thanks guys, awesome job! greetings from Serbia..
Page is a real musician in the sense that he writes and performs. More importantly, he cares about, and has incredible insight into the equipment he works with. Anyone that plays in a band or performs music should aspire to this level. You form a higher level of appreciation for your work and how you deliver it.
I met Page in 2012 playing at Smith's Olde Bar in Atlanta. Super friendly guy and played a great show. By bandmate happened to be having diner there and called me saying Helmet is playing tonight. I jumped in my car and hauled ass down there. Great show. And my band played there almost once a month for a long time so it was awesome to see a childhood idol playing on a stage I knew very well. I got to meet him. Page is a very chill, cool guy. Oh, and it was the 20th anniversary of the Meantime album. Great show.
@@bradwilliams6550 Amen brother. That staircase in the back is straight out of The Exorcist if you're hauling gear up and down it. It was more exhausting than the show. But it was always a good show when we played there. Our fans really liked Smith's Olde Bar so we always had a good turn out.
One of the better bands from the 90's. These guys and Fugazi were great. Being a native of Virginia, the DC punk/go-go scene was insanely good. Scream, Black Flag, and a few other artists stood out. Henry Rollins is a wonderful person
I was at the show this night! It was awesome! Last time I had seen Helmet was at Summerfest in Milwaukee in the mid 90's! Helmet has been my favorite since Jr High!
It's so cool to see someone who is so passionate about what they do. Helmet is a band that has always been in my top spots for best bands. Groove masters ....
I remember the first time I heard Give It back in 93, heard it on a classic rock station of all places. The DJ said we are obviously a classic rock station and don't play new music but this is the heaviest song I've heard in a long time and it just rocks so be prepared to be blown away! Man he sure wasn't kidding! Went out a little while later and bought the album and wore it the f*** out! Definitely one of the best bands from the 90s, such a Black Sabbath vibe!
Meantime my favorite album from helmet when the album came out I was living in New York back in the 90s good memories great guitar work page on that album
I just finished recording my cover version of Sinatra, my fingers are still sore from all the impossible chords i had to pull off, and now from this video i learned they use a special tuning.... Wtf man😏
dammnn, honestly had no idea that sinatra was tuned that way, even the most subtle seeming differences can be a huge difference in reality. so i guess back in the day they tuned it to DADGDE rather than DADGBE, and the same deal nowadays except every string lowered down a tone. genius.
Easily my favorite, MASSIVELY underrated band! I saw them on the Betty anniversary tour at Harlows in Sacramento, CA. An ideal setting for a loud band... small space, sweat flying! They absolutely destroyed! The best live show I have seen since Ministry at the Capital Ballroom in 98. My friend and I showed up early to watch the techs set up. I have a few shots of the setlist taped to the floor and a pic of THE magenta ESP. Great band, great video! Keep making music Page!
I also saw them on the Betty anniversary tour, at a small club on Long Island, NY. I met Page after the show and he was so cool. We chatted about gear for a few minutes. Surreal moment for me. To meet and talk with one of my guitar heroes. Unforgettable. And I also had to get a few pics of the magenta Horizon. I always get a laugh when Page mentions Sam Ash, in Queens. I bought plenty of gear from that store, back in the day.
I've seen Ministry and Helmet too, Helmet and Faith No More was my first show at 15. Saw Ministry at Lollapalooza ll and they are 2 of the best shows I've ever seen also....
My friends and I were playing hacky sack outside La Luna before a Helmet show in Oregon. Up pulls a taxi with the band, they ask where’s Burnside? We showed them the way and had a sesh before they jammed.
That was a great talk. Things like those make performing music live look pretty damn difficult, aren't they. Aside of already tough task of singing and playing the instrument there's a whole universe of devices to operate as well. Remembering how everything's connected, tap dancing on the footswitches and so on, head spinning stuff.
When you have a genus brain like Page Hamilton's, you need to keep everything else simple. This man is so practical and clean in his thinking, it's humbling & inspiring..
Imagine he's been going HARD for 30 mins straight and he can barely end it off! haha great video!! had to rewind so many times cos i wanted to get it all \m/
Really liked the video. Was gonna say do a Prong one, but I looked first and you have some Prong/Tommy Victor stuff, so I'll just say Thanks! subscribed.
Nice to see one of these gear reviews shows where the artist isn’t all about ‘this old Gibson or that old Fender’. ESP’s are f****n amazing well built instruments. I have a custom Horizon 3 and an ESP USA Eclipse.. sold my Gibson LP Custom to afford that one and I’ll never miss it

The space is still there
this is the most straight forward rig rundown vid i've ever seen.
this dude knows his gear expertly.
He sure does.
No doubt. A real artist that's passionate about his sound

Paige is total class, and a total pro.

Well, it's not really the same band as the lineups have changed over the years, but I get your meaning.
Vancouver, Dec. '92, Ministry, Sepultura (Max), and Helmet! My 2nd concert. Still have my ticket stub. Thanks for the memories guys! Cheers
Nice! 😀
That sounds amazing! Wish they still had concerts like that in Van.
Page Hamilton: the undisputed heavyweight champion of the killer, heavy af Drop-D riff.

I have 2 custom shop ESP Horizons because of this guy. As well as the Ultra Lead. Very inspirational, Page.
That's awesome!
All my guitars are ESP LTD... thank you PAGE!
Thank you Mr. Hamilton! Helmet will live on forever!

He's a great player!

I didn't buy into to the Aftertaste-onwards stuff, but recently discovered Seeing Eye Dog is actually great in a different way!
Great comment. Couldn't agree more.
My all time favorite MOOD LIFTER!! There is nothing like Helmet live

He's always had an awesome guitar sound

Page is a great & humble guy, thanks Page for making me a Drop D guy! :)
Super great guy!
I love the fact he tunes to Drop D, then uses chords like G maj13 #11
dude this is woke
I discovered Drop D and HELMET back in 1993... and I haven't looked back! *Now Drop C... but I still play the early HELMET songs in Drop D
Such an under appreciated hero in the Metal scene! So many bands that rose to prominence in the 90s owe a lot to HELMET!
💯
Metal gods with short hair before everyone else cut their hair !
Everything he said went right over my head.....but it was fascinating all the same. I could listen to him explaining shit I don't understand all day.

FANE (not THANE) speakers. Most notably used with old HIWATT amps among others.
