As a boy my uncle inherited the tin whistle that had belonged to his GGrandfather. He played it all through high scchool in the Marching band, It went with him to War in WWII from Gudalcanal to Okinawa, through many assignements in South America after the war and with him to Korea where he Commanded and Infantry Battalion for the duration of the war. Sadly it was broken by one of his children a few years after he returned. He always spoke fondly of it til he passed in his 90s.
I'm sorry but at some point I thought this was going to be a Pulp Fiction joke where someone had to smuggle the whistle inside his ass during war. But the actual story is even more amazing. Sad that the whistle was broken.
LYRICS: As down the glen one Easter morn To a city fair rode I There armed lines of marching men In squadrons passed me by No pipe did hum, nor battle drum Did sound its loud tatoo But the angelus bells o'er the liffey swells Rang out in the foggy dew Right proudly high in Dublin town Hung they out the flag of war 'Twas better to die 'neath an Irish sky Than at Suvla or Sud-El-Bar And from the plains of Royal Meath Strong men came hurrying through While Britannia's Huns with their long range guns Sailed in through the foggy dew. Their bravest fell and the requiem bell Rang mournfully and clear For those who died that Eastertide In the springing of the year While the world did gaze with deep amaze At those fearless men but few Who bore the fight that freedom's light Might shine through the foggy dew As back through the glen I rode again And my heart with me fell sore For I parted then with valiant men Whom I never shall see 'more But to and fro in my dreams I go And I kneel and pray for you For slavery fled a glorious dead When you fell in the foggy dew One of my favourite chi chi covers agus tá tú go hiontach! hope whoever is reading this has a good day :) The chi chis are the chieftains its just how i used to call them as a child
The late, great Chieftains. (Well, Paddy Malone is no longer with us and nor is the band.) I was fortunate enough to be able to go to two of their concerts. I still wish I could find a recording of a harp solo they performed at one of those concerts. It was a piece about the battle of the Boyne from the Irish viewpoint - so therefore emotionally similar to The Foggy Dew. There is a well-known piece about the battle of the Boyne from the English viewpoint but my Celtic soul prefers the Irish.
Am not Irish but this is one of my favorite songs. A few years ago with God's help I was able to come up with a different title and lyrics that take this song back to something else very significant that happened 1,916 years before the Irish Rising that commemorates what happened on the first Easter morning.
Just love the talent of this girl, so beautiful in every way. Thank you for taking such an interest in Irish music. You have honored Ireland with your talent and beauty!
Одна из красивейших женщин мира играет на флейте, укулеле, гитаре и еще успевает почесать носик так, что у всех мужчин мира подгибаются коленки! )) Алина, ты супер! Жги ещё!
I first heard this song in 1962 performed by the Clancy Brothers... I like this much better. The Clancy's did it as a martial song, this is what it was always meant to be, a lament for the fallen. Bravo, and Well Done!
I know our two countries are essentially at war now, but I wanted to let you know this song helped me grieve a dear friend who died of a stroke. He deeply loved old gaelic music, and I knew he liked this song. While we were waiting around for him to pass this is what I listened to. It brought me some small measure of peace.
I grew up on the Sinead O'Connor/Chieftains cover of this, and I think I like yours even better. Well done. Would love to hear your version of the vocals for it.
Gorgeous and in credible talent... Very enjoyable! Thank you. One of my favorite albums of Irish music ever is Dick Gaughan's "Handful of Earth" I would love to hear your versions of any/all of the traditional Irish songs on it.
Beautiful everything including yourself and all the way up to the flute and guitar! you can turn little Carpathians into magic forest, thats for sure girl!
Wow!! You are so talented! I am Irish and I love this song. The music that you played was so nice and I love how you played it on loads of different instruments and put all of the videos together to make this!! This is the first of your videos that I watched and it’s so inspiring! Keep up the amazing work
OMG that was awesome! Blew me away! So well done! Thank you for leaving in the nose scratch! I just got a tin whistle as a gift and all these videos on youtube totally make me want to keep practicing it. Awesomeness at its best.
Probably mentioned before, this is the song Conor McGregor enters the ring to, sang by sinead O Connor and played by the chieftains, one of Ireland most beautiful patriotic songs, it tells the story of the 1916 Easter rising, but wow this is as beautiful a version. Amazingly talented ...
What an absolute throwback to childhood! I am a flautist and I've recently got into folk and whistle playing and having played a range of tunes I don't think any of them have as much depth and melancholy and feeling as the Irish ones, I love them so much
Very beautiful indeed! I’m glad you took the time to learn this amazing song and even add your own harmony lines.. The way you slide is interesting, I slide the opposite direction....
Thank you for the inspiration. I have just started to learn the flute after a very very long time on guitar. It's a pleasure to hear such beautiful music. I love it. I would very much like to hear more. Absolutely touching.
I used to hear this song all the time when I was nine years old. The version I heard was from The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. This is one of my favorite instrumental versions. It sounds so beautiful like this and on the key of C minor.
This was my late Grandfather's favourite song, he whistled it all the time. It's so nice hearing you play it. Brings back memories.
My grandpa had always a song in his mouth too, he was one of those old chill people with grounded wisdom.
Spinning in their graves are they?
My grandfather was born in 1920 and his favorite song was Hotel California.
I have had braces for 5 months and I just realised that I can't whistle with them on because of you comment XD

Очень жалко, что о Вас так мало людей знают. Вы прекрасно поете и играете на муз.инструментах. Продолжайте в том же духе!
