There's really a fine line when it comes to writing good MG questions. You don't want one that's going to get 7 different answers (contestant and panelists), but you don't want one that's only got one sensible answer. Coming up with a question that's both funny and leads to good gameplay is harder than it seems. -- Case in point was the NBC peacock question. I honestly couldn't think of any alternate answer, and neither did anyone playing that round. A question with only one answer doesn't make for good gameplay and isn't very entertaining either.
I was going to say the same thing. I haven't exactly been taking notes, and after 350 episodes, I may not be recalling correctly, but I seem to remember at least once before when the celebs totally struck out of matching the audience responses. But it doesn't happen often. I think this question was a little harder than the average. When I saw it, the first thing that popped into my head was the old woman who lived in a shoe, but I thought it was too silly and too long and no one would have said it. But then I couldn't think of anything else!
No H/H match at all today! For the end of the week H/H trivia post, in honor of Amanda Blake who was chosen earlier in the week, I thought I'd give the updated list of all celebrities who have ever been chosen for the head-to-head match without winning. This isn't a knock on those celebs, because judging by the stats, it's pretty hard to pull off a match, and, honestly, some contestants give rotten answers! To illustrate that point, many comments describe Richard as very good at the H/H match, and even he didn't match until his ninth try! And his overall winning percentage has been right around 32% for weeks and weeks and weeks now. I see this list as a reminder of the wide variety of big stars who have contributed to Match Game, a part of the show's history, if you will. Many of these celebrities were only on for a single week. Others (I see four or five names) appear more frequently and will eventually achieve a H/H match. So without any further ado, here are all the celebs who have been chosen so far without matching the contestant (in alphabetical order): Lucie Arnaz - chosen 1 time Kay Ballard - chosen 1 time Bob Barker - chosen 2 times Amanda Blake - chosen 1 time Larry Blyden - chosen 1 time Joyce Bulifant - chosen 1 time Jack Cassidy - chosen 2 times Bill Cullen - chosen 1 time Richard Deacon - chosen 1 time Stephanie Edwards - chosen 2 times Nanette Fabray - chosen 2 times Arlene Francis - chosen 1 time Dick Gautier - chosen 1 time Larry Hovis - chosen 1 time Ruta Lee - chosen 1 time Robert Q. Morgan - chosen 1 time Robert Morse - chosen 1 time Nipsey Russell - chosen 7 times Joanie Sommers - chosen 1 time McLean Stevenson - chosen 1 time Jimmie Walker - chosen 1 time *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 350, excluding the lost/missing episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

Kathy, I always look forward to your comments. Yes, there ARE times when Gary tries too hard and interrupts too much -- but he's not that bad and I get tired of hearing him villainized! He didn't have the standup comedy/rapid-fire humor chops of some of the other panelists, but had his moments. His biggest problem was a tendency to ramble. And of course the reason he was on was because he was THE breakout star of one of CBS's biggest shows at a time when CBS had 8/10 top primetime shows! I read someone's comment that said McLean Stevenson should have done the gig while Charles was away--OMG, NOOOOOOO. Yes, he could be funny, but he did not know how to share the spotlight. His need to be the star and not an ensemble player was why he left MASH. In his Match Game appearances, he was like Gary on speed, hogging up way too much time.
There were a burst of highly negative comments about Gary when his fill-in stint for the great CNR began, and so I watched the first few episodes with a bit of trepidation. Now I continue to watch with puzzlement. I haven't seen anything yet that Gary has said or done to merit such hate. He's not the matchingest celeb, but he's not embarrassingly awful, and he doesn't spoil the show in any way, and he doesn't hog the time. Daniel Ryan yes yes yes.. I have never said that about any episode and I’ve been watching going on two weeks but I think you’re on to something because out of nowhere I said to myself, these people sound drunk... not high but drunk..: even Gene!
Although Patti said that they had one cocktail at the dinner/lunch break but they were a walking party sober thou.. It could have been that thou and just plain tried after 4 shows of having to be on and funny.. ;0) Or the lack of sleeping, jet lag and so forth.. ;0)
@@sdlively27 I'm not convinced that just because Patti said it, that means it was consistently true week after week. There may have been times when they tippled just a bit more. There are some weeks when it's clear they're flying a little high during the final two tapings. They clearly were having fun, too, and I think if you put that many bright minds together they start to riff off one another and things can get wild quickly.
This show is such a reflection of Gene's id. Or ego? Anyway - he creates a bit of non-PC chaos and it's fun, at least to my sense of humor. That must have been the flimsiest set - things WERE breaking from time to time, even down to the human who was to do the changes to the board not taking action!! Gary got in a good one with the "bag" joke! Which segues into the always popular Pile on Brett!!! game!

STOP BEING JEALOUS OF GARY. IT'S SO TIRING ALREADY!! Not ONE of you say anything when your precious saint Richard tries o be funny with HIS stupid answers! (and HE does it on pretty much EVERY show)
In another year, after "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", the right move for Jeremiah would have been to use the Holy Handgrenade of Antioch. But this was really a stinker of a question, with so many possible decent answers that getting a match would practically require a miracle. Questions with two or three good answers provide better gameplay and bring the game down to the skill and intelligence of the contestants. That still leaves room for funny answers and interplay among the panelists without letting the panel antics get out of control. Otherwise it's just luck in getting softball questions and avoiding stinker questions.
FYI, Amanda Blake was a heavy smoker which may have contributed to her early death in 1989 though after the autopsy, it was later discovered that she was HIV + .
It's hard to say, because he was clearly trying hard to think of something clever (and failing) and might not have taken the two seconds needed to think of the obvious first. The contestants and their interests might as well have been invisible to him because he was focused on the audience and the other panelists. Even Joyce and other semi-regulars known for ditzy answers, like Elaine, usually played things straight when a match was tight, as she did here. Gary never seemed to.
@@brettmiddleton7949 Except there weren't any other obvious answers. The only thing Tarzan owns is a loincloth. Even among obvious answers, this one was more obvious.
I agree with you Leesa. Sometimes I wonder what goes through the celebs' heads when a contestant needs to match *everyone* to stay in the game. If I were up there in that situation, I'd glance at my neighbors' answers and see if I could put the same thing down (if it was a reasonable answer). I sure wouldn't take that moment to try to be creative and funny, especially with a question like this which really only had one obvious or sensible answer. But in the end, it's just a game, although this game show is decidedly different from a standard one (compare to Password or Jeopardy), in that here the "game" often takes a backseat to the antics and joking around and schmoozing. (Look at how often and how far the "game" part of the show goes off the rails, even in today's episode.) Obviously most contestants watched the show at home and knew what they were getting into beforehand, and realized there was a huge element of luck (easier questions, random celebrity oddness, etc.) to the game. Hopefully they had some fun and made some memories. Plus, Pete went home with $5,600 (in 1974 dollars!) so I'm sure he was a happy camper despite not winning another game.
I know. And it's A.O.K when saint Richard doesn't come up with an obviously answer (like he had MANY times) simply because he's saint Richard, isn't it?
I don't understand why people keep complaining about . The celebrities who are loud or make jokes for instance Brett or Gary . Their the ones who make the show(well except Kay she's just weird 😃) . If it wasn't for them the show would of gotten boring so quickly

Slow week again but once again Richard won the week giving away 8,250 dollars in head to head and audience match matches with 11 matches for the regulars.. Amanda won for the semi regulars giving away 1,000 dollars in audience match matches with 8 matches..
1:14 and in the next round of that show's episodes, Dickie himself would win the grand tournament

At 3:42 Gene actually says, I’m talking Bible talk, that’s the way all those WEIRDOS talked back then. Oh my Lord... no he didn’t!!! Lol
Interesting since he fuss at the writers for using those words like that in a question a couple of episodes up and they still did it. Now sure if they spoke that way but at least bible has it that way.. ;0)
Does Juanita's hair count as a second contestant?
Even though Gary was being annoying has hell as usual, this should have been a Gold Star Episode. And speaking of Tony Orlando, Pete Contoise, the contestsnt sure reminded me of him. I also thought he looked like Mark Spitz. And I'm assuming tha this was Gene Wood and Amanda Blake's only week.
der22672 yep... every time I looked at him I wanted to sing,” Tie A Yellow Ribbon around the Old Oak Tree! Lol
Yes, Gene Wood's and Amanda Blake's only week for the entire 70's show run.. I guess I need to sit down and do one for the 60's run just to see if anyone from the 60's did any of the 70's show.. ;0) Yet another project for me.. ;0)
@@sdlively27 Too bad, really. Both Gene Wood and Amanda were classy, and I wouldn't have minded seeing either return.
This is the best thumbnail image for one of your videos so far! Do you create them or do you choose one of the three that youtube creates?
UA-cam creates them. I love this image!
It would look great on a t-shirt.
@@MatchGameProductions very cool.
Alcohol must have been involved in the making of this episode
Juanita - nice wig
With Me That's 3 Gene's !!!
The Old Oak Tree sucks too. 😂
Juanita is a lovely lady but I wonder how much bigger her hair got in the 1980s 😮
Family jewels
This show is such a reflection of Gene's id. Or ego? Anyway - he creates a bit of non-PC chaos and it's fun, at least to my sense of humor. That must have been the flimsiest set - things WERE breaking from time to time, even down to the human who was to do the changes to the board not taking action!! Gary got in a good one with the "bag" joke! Which segues into the always popular Pile on Brett!!! game!
And look at those chairs! Plastic, uncomfortable. Like they bought them from Dollar Tree! #1 show on daytime television.,..,,,Mark Goodson was a tightwad!
I'm sure Brett was a good person, but I just don't understand her constantly berating everyone else - especially the other lady panelists?
She is just joking around, they all give each other crap. No one took it seriously.
Mike Sebastian you know she can be funny and just when she wins me over again she blows it by going too far. She just doesn’t know when to shut up... seriously...
I dont know what you are seeing. The other panelists either laugh or go along with it. I swear you all just want to call Brett out for something. I would take her over Gary, Kaye and others who are so obnoxious, annoying and attention seekers!
Her comment to Amanda was on the money something like " What a disappointing answer ? Amanda being so prudish in relation to her on screen character ?
🙄🙄🙄🙄 Another one who doesn't understand Brett's sense of humour. Brett is only having fun and it was never mean or hurtful.
18:00 Gary cost that man a tie and a rematch with that stupid "ape to a dance" answer just to be funny. What a jerk.
I'm not so sure it was "trying to be funny". I think it was deliberately choosing which contestant he wanted to win.
STOP BEING JEALOUS OF GARY. IT'S SO TIRING ALREADY!! Not ONE of you say anything when your precious saint Richard tries o be funny with HIS stupid answers! (and HE does it on pretty much EVERY show)
@@dmnemaine OH, you mean like saint Richard does? Ok (gottca)
Gary was a creep.
@@dmnemaine I think that's worst.
Why is her hair so big ! Never saw that be for
Big wig.
She's got hair for Jesus!
"GREY MARE" - Hey, they spelt it the Commonwealth way.
How darling, "I never heard so many speech impodiments!"
Th😊
Gary over did it a bit picking on Brett. But wow, what a great episode.
Does Johnny Olson introduce Amanda Blake as "Sanda Blake" ?
I was waiting for Juanita's hair to tip her backwards at one or two points
Gary knew the obvious answer was loin cloth everyone else had it.
(Look at how often and how far the "game" part of the show goes off the rails, even in today's episode.)
Obviously most contestants watched the show at home and knew what they were getting into beforehand, and realized there was a huge element of luck (easier questions, random celebrity oddness, etc.) to the game.
@@brettmiddleton7949 NO THEY DIDN"T! When a match is tight, that's when saint Richard always gave his STUPID answers (he's done that many MANY times)!
I don't understand why people keep complaining about . The celebrities who are loud or make jokes for instance Brett or Gary . Their the ones who make the show(well except Kay she's just weird 😃) . If it wasn't for them the show would of gotten boring so quickly
Late to the party: Brett at least made a genuine effort to match contestants. Gary went for a few stupid dumb a&& jokes trying to be 'funny'. Pity he's a bit of a schmuck.
ROFL! Ok another good one, I don't care if everyone thinks everyone is drunk, I don't.. ;0) After dinner tapping again.. ;0) What did Amanda's card say, I couldn't read it. ;0)
I don't care, either. All I know for sure about the after dinner shows, is that the stars seemed funnier and more relaxed.
Of course Gary has to mess everything up! And he thinks he’s being funny like BRETT.
Did you see how fast Gary had to backtrack when he made the bag remark?
No.
@@pencils812 You DO know you have to ignore all the jealous Gary hates, right?

Some of the things she says to the other stars are pretty vicious at times IMO, even if they are meant in good fun.
Why? because she so likeable?
@@kristabrewer6736 she IS likable but she can be catty too towards other women on the panel
Diane, right on. She was a mean one.
@@kristabrewer6736Wrong again. Drunk again.
Gary was a good sub for Charles.
He was ok, but he wasn't the BEST

That Gary Burghoff was useless and unfunny!! He was profusely in the way.
He was a WHOLE lot better than saint Richard, that's for sure (at least HE knows how to match most of the time)
You mean Gary was smart & funny, there I fixed it for you
@@kristabrewer6736wrong again. Richard was the star of the show. Gary was a twit. Brett was a drunk. Case closed.
