At the end of 1941 in reaction to the German invasion, Stalin ordered the formation of sapper or engineer brigades in the Red Army.
During the offensive, they were tasked with constructing obstacles such as anti-tank hedgehogs and mines to slow down the German tanks and infantry.
Assault Sappers proved themselves in many battles from Kursk to Berlin, especially where standard units had no success.

The weight of steel-made body armor is, to a degree, irrelevant if you know how to properly distribute the weight to larger surface area.
Modern day Kevlar body armor is around 20kg so it's not that light as you think.
I mean, it actually worked unlike almost every other body armor, so I think it was worth it
Bro imagine how terrifying it must've been for a Wehrmacht soldier to shoot a whole mag into a sapper and realize he's deflecting the bullets.

It instills firearms discipline and respect for both your weapon system, and those being used against you by the enemy.

5:55 Reminds me a tad bit of those "Endless Wars" flash games.
In the German trenches , panic began in 3 cases: 1) They saw black caps and telniashkas; 2) they saw bright green caps; 3) they saw steel vests!
Bright green caps were worn by Soviet border guards. In the first hours of the war, they took the whole blow on themselves and showed incredible heroism and perseverance. There were cases when small outposts (5-15 people) held back entire divisions of the Wehrmacht for several days. The Germans have not forgotten this. They say that our people sometimes specially brought a border guard's cap to the trench and walked in it in order to intimidate the enemy. One cap was enough for the Germans to start a panic.
Also, the Germans were very afraid of the Soviet sailors, or rather, the marines. These guys were desperate. They always went on the attack in full height and in their naval uniform! These were suiciders who were thrown into the most difficult areas of the front. For their assertiveness, strength and fighting spirit, the Germans called them the "black death".
And you have already looked at the sapper-engineering special forces just now.
You are right, but German soldiers would rarely panic when spotting any of these items but rather they would simply be more alert, it wasn't easy to make German troops full on panic.
Sound like Soviet propaganda to boost moral, always started with something like in early days, small group stopped entire German divisions.
Somehow the Soviet keep assumed in their propaganda that the Germans called them this and that while most of cases the Germans probably did not know who the heck they were and did not even write in their record.
In the case of Soviet sailors, the German overuns them by days, weeks. So quick they did not even recognize the difference between branches of Soviet Navy
@@kiennguyenanh8498 These are generalized and simplified historical facts. It is written according to the memoirs of veterans and archival documents. Ordinary infantry units of the USSR were not distinguished by great training and knowledge of the most modern methods of warfare (And the fascists were not very afraid of them.), but there were also special branches of the armed forces, as now special units. Actually, the Soviet special forces were born during the Great Patriotic War. I'm not going to talk about intelligence and SMERSH now, it's a completely different story. I meant infantry, military units.
I read the memoirs of one sapper, one of those with bibs. Once they were sent into a frontal attack on the German trenches. So, it turned out that a non-Soviet machine gunner was shooting in the sector where he was walking. The sapper decided to pick up the machine gun. He was very angry, because the machine gunner was killing his comrades. He went straight to his full height at the machine gun. And the psychological attack was successful. Although the machine gunner fired at him, he could not kill him. That sapper wrote that when he got cheap in a tight and shot that German, he saw that the German had peed himself out of fear. Later, when he recovered from the shock, the sapper realized that he had a bullet in his shoulder, in 2 places.
Being a border guard in the USSR was very honorable. Protect the state border from spies and smugglers. They had excellent combat experience (in the 20s and 30s they fought with large gangs in the south and east) and a high patriotic spirit. True, a couple hundred soldiers could not stop an entire army. There were cases when a couple of border guards held back an entire division for several days (although these are isolated cases). The Germans themselves wrote that they were afraid to see a bright green cap in the Russian trenches all through the war. And our polizovali this to demoralize the enemy. Sometimes they took a border guard's cap, put it on a stick and carried it around the trenches.
And Marines have always been the elite, not only in the USSR, but also in many countries. However, during the Great Patriotic War, this concept has not yet been formed. They were simply sent to the most difficult sectors of the front, where there was a shortage of ordinary infantry. At the beginning of the war, the Germans sank many of our ships and ordinary sailors joined the ranks of the Marines. The sailors were distinguished by a cool temper. They preferred to go into battle, not in infantry uniform, but in vests and caps. They performed well in the defense of the Crimea. They defended Sevastopol for almost 2 years. The Marines also proved themselves in the defense of Leningrad, Stalingrad, during the Battle of the Kursk Bulge. The Germans themselves wrote about the terrible wave of black-and-white death, which cannot be stopped.
My grandfather was also a Marine. His last fight was on the Kursk Bulge. His squad had to go before the main offensive. Sneak up to the river at night, cross and wait at the high bank. And before the main forces attack, break into the enemy trenches of the first lane and tie them up with a fight. Thereby allowing the main forces to cross and go on the attack. His foot was torn off by a splinter. He lay on the field for 3 days. It occurred to him to cover himself with corpses, as if to create a dugout for himself. The fact is that all these days separate groups of unfinished Germans were retreating and great-grandfather had to shoot with them. On the third day, he was somehow miraculously noticed by a passing rear artillery. He was picked up and taken to the hospital. His leg had to be amputated, but all his life he rode on one leg more cheerfully than many on two.
@@kiennguyenanh8498 It's partly true, I have read of German units actually dubbing the Soviet Naval Infantry the "Black Death" but by no means did the Germans panic in their trenches seeing them. It was a lot more of a "Alright these guys won't give up without a fight, be alert". German units were also weary of Soviet Assault Sappers especially in close range. As far as the green caps go I haven't heard anything about them, they were worn by Soviet Border Guards and they were swept aside by the Germans early on albeit with heavy fighting.
Sappers don't get praised much but they have a long distinguished past. They are almost always the first ones in and clear the way for the infantry.
I believe one need to understand that it was more complicated. There were engineers in every infantry unit, and they were not assault engineers. Also there were separate sapper brigades of 3 different types - Engineer special brigade (main purpose to put different mines, also were used behind enemy lines for sabotage, destruction of railroads, tunnels and bridges), Motorized engineer brigade (main purpose to clean the obstacles, minefields and etc, put own mines and support offensive units) and Motorized assault engineer brigade ( those who were shown in this video). So there were a lot of different sappers in Soviet Army, not all of them were assault sappers.

Those small shovels with sharpened edges are no joke. In the late 80's (maybe to this day, I'm not sure) youth gangs would use them in street fights. People lost limbs.
Apparently in Stalingrad, quite a lot of Germans got decapitated by them.
