Hello Debra 👋 and Bill, from Lewes Delaware. This is something I’m continually working on en plein air. The challenge is seeing what’s in front of you and capturing that, as opposed to purposefully creating depth in your painting by adding colors which are not really there. It’s an internal battle with authenticity. Use your “imagination” or go with what is.

Enjoyed the demo! I really would like to see the grays on the palette. Does the whitewater constitute the lightest gray value or is it counted as a highlight? Are the grays chromatic black and titanium white?

Thanks for this great demo! I learned quite a lot. I keep wondering, what is the best method to assess value when mixing it on palette? I use a painted card with 9 B&W values, squinting, and also phone camera (black and white filter). I guess it eventually gets better by practice? Despite all the methods I used, I still find it to be difficult. "Sneaky" as Bill says :)
