  • The Jeep Cherokee XJ 2.5td gets a new rear double cardan driveshaft today and I wanted to say a big thanks to the guys who helped out on Pateron.
    Hopefully this will clear up some driveline vibrations in the rear.
    The front however is absolutely terrible and sadly needs a replacement.
    Thanks for watching.

    I saw your comment about finding the clutch is toast, hopefully it’s just the clutch and you can get back on the road again soon! When people talk about lifting Jeeps and stuff what doesn’t make it to a lot of social media is the secondary, tertiary, quaternary(!) effects a lift might have on other components. It’s not super simple!
    I really enjoy your workshop vids, but I’m also looking forward to hearing about your family summer trips, for your sanity too!

      Things can go pretty wrong when you lift these things. I want to drop mine about 2 inches at least just because I think that the hight is killing things. The clutch is ordered and hopefully it doesn't take too long. The weather is so nice, I'm dying man. I want to get out a bit so it's the nissan for now and hiking

      Thank you, its a huge upgrade to be honest and hopefully it will save some maintenance down the line. Not feeling like your reentering the earths atmosphere in bake bean tin is quite nice to be honest. Although I've just pulled the entire transmission off and found my clutch is destroyed. Goof and bad as that's the source of the vibration.

    I lifted my wj and picked up a terrible vib in the back which I diddled with for nearly a year. I finally broke down and did a hack & Tap and used a spare front DC driveshaft on the back. This got rid of my long time rear vibs but mine did the same thing as yours because it seemed like I picked up a much more subtle front vib. It may have been there all along but the back was so bad I didn't notice it. Still working on that one. Nice vid!

      @WorkshoptoWilderness  9 місяців тому

      Its been a pain in the ass on mine. I've managed to build a longer rear drive shaft which is working vibration free amazingly. I should send it off for balancing though.
      The front is never ending... a bearing or something has gone in the np231 now. So loud 😫
      Glad you got yours running smoother, hopefully you can get the front sorted 👍

    Ouch rounding off the drain plug. One mantra drummed into me by friends when doing diff oil changes “always undo the fill plug before the drain plug”. I did round off a fill plug once… but luckily hadn’t undone the drain one. Also I have ground down the hex 24mm sockets flat so no bevel so the have more contact area since the rounding off mishap.

    I ran this same style driveshaft for a long time with no issues other than with the driveshaft itself.
    Do you want me to send you an sye kit? I have a ton of 231 parts I can send you a sye kit and a 6 pinion planet too so you can upgrade from the stock 3 pinion low range planet. Then if you get a wide chain kit you'd have the ultimate 231. There are some differences between 95 and newer transfer cases so I'd send you a 6 pinion planet for 95 and newer unless for some reason you have an older transfer case I'd need to know that. If I send you that stuff then maybe you can just hang onto it until your ready or build your spare t-case on the side. The sye kit upgrades your output shaft to 32 spline then I think the 6 pinion planet is a must I always stick one in. I'd highly suggest buying a wide chain kit too everything drops right in. I don't have a wide chain kit on hand that isn't in a transfer case. Im using an atlas transfer case now and my wife likes the np242 so she runs that. I have 5 complete np231 cases and 3 or 4 sye kits and a ton of parts so I'd love to send you some stuff if you want just let me know

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  2 роки тому

      Thats extremely generous. I would absolutely jump on the chance for an sye kit. It would be something I could build up In my spare time while accumulating parts to fit it like the wide chain kit and drive shaft. I had to pull my entire transmission off today as the source of the vibration is a disintegrated clutch. It's a job I've wanted to do for a while along side the rear main seal. But it will give me the chance to inspect the transmission and np231.
      Did you have trouble with that shaft then? What specifically went wrong with it? With regards to the sye, that would be amazing but let me know on postage and such?

      @@WorkshoptoWilderness I guess a bad clutch is better than other possible problems.
      When I was running that same style driveshaft I kept having to take it apart and grease/clean the center piece in the middle of the double cardan because it would squeak and whine at certain speeds and it wouldn't stop unless i took it apart, i have the special greasing tip to grease them too but regular greasing didn't help. I also noticed it would get extremely hot. I've never had that issue with any other double cardan joint except the one on that driveshaft with the stock slip yoke im fairly certain it was just an issue with my specific joint. Otherwise it held up fine through a tremendous amount of abuse but I didn't have a lot of spline engagement at certain points when cycling the suspension.
      I will get that sye kit together for you and a 6 pinion planet. Can I go back to that email and use your address and number on this package just like we did with the last package exactly how it's written?
      I tried texting you a couple weeks ago and it didn't work I just want to make sure everything's still current. I'll probably email you when I get everything together to send that's a bit easier.
      Another thing I forgot to mention is I've seen a shift fork upgrade but I've never done it. There's a guy on ebay who sells used parts from other transfer cases that fit in the 231 to beef them up and he had a shift fork advertised as an upgrade. But you should at least do the wide chain/sprockets.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  2 роки тому

      I better keep an eye on it then. Its certainly a bit warm after some driving but it hasn't made any noise yet or gotten hot. Fingers crossed it stays that way. You can use the same number and email as before although I am unsure as to why the message didn't go through last time. The address is exactly as it was written last time also but any issues and I can send it all again in an email.
      I would probabaly mark it as a gift and write a lower amount than the item is worth just so that the maffia don't milk me for everything I have. I pay 25 perent import duty on everything I order along with a handling fee. Customs are clever and they will look items up on the internet and value it if they can find it so calling it something like "spare car part" may stop them pricing up a SYE kit. Anyway its no issue either way but I can message you an email.
      I will check out the chain kit and everything online. It will be nice to build it all up in the background, maybe get it all painted and install in next January when its dam cold outside. Thanks again!!

    Stock wheelbase on a 4 door XJ is 105.51 inches. With a 3" lift on the Bumble Jeep, I came up almost an inch short. I am lifting to about 4.5" in the front, so I got a set of adjustable upper and lower control arms which I set to an inch longer than stock. I'll check the wheel base after I get the 4.5" lift coils installed and recheck the wheelbase. It's interesting how just changing fluids can help/hurt things like drive line vibrations. God bless and stay well.

    Hey man, glad to see an update. As for your drive line problem, I do know that an aw4 front shaft from a 6cyl is about 2-3 inches longer than an ax15 or ba/10 front shaft and all parts are compatible and will swap straight over between shafts. I don’t know if you could get your hands on one but I found out the difference the hard way after rebuilding fresh u joints and pressing them in that the lengths were different 😂
    This is all for of course if you don’t already know. Seeing your build I don’t doubt this isn’t something you haven’t already found out. But I thought I’d mention it

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  2 роки тому

      I filmed my bushcraft and outdoor interests from 2011 to 2019. In that time the channel grew quite a bit and I also worked as a bushcraft instructor and studied botany and other things to further my knowledge of the outdoors along side the channel. It became my life really, and every day was bushcraft and outdoor skills. I hunted quite regularly and it got to the point where I was filming almost everything I was doing. The more I filmed the less I would remember about my day in the forest and all I would remember was the filming part of it. Filming started to take away something from the experience and it was taking away the real reason of why I was there in the first place.
      I go into the forest to be in the forest, its like my church, a place of peace where I can ground myself and listen to the sounds and see the sights of the real world. When you film all the time you don't see this anymore, you become consumed by the film, camera angles, shots and what people might think of the video. Along side this the expectations of the growing viewer base can also become overwhelming. Some days I would wake up at 5am load up my gear and hike into the wilderness onto a frozen lake in -20c to try and catch fish while filming all of this. Multiple camera angles and struggling in the cold with batteries just for a film on youtube...
      Once I felt this I basically put down the camera and stopped filming about 75 percent of the things I would do. I never film my fishing trips, my wild camps, cooking in the forest or hiking anymore. I only experience them myself and take in the nature around me. Sometimes I take a photo. It restored my balance and made me feel like me again. I did 10 years of my outdoor life, I did my time I think and my videos can live on for those who enjoyed them.
      This channel is just for fun and its very easy to film as it doesn't require massive logistical planning. Its a casual channel where I'm just being me and I always talk to myself in the garage anyway so its actually quite natural for me. I don't stress or push myself or care much about views or what people think. I just film what I'm doing and its another side of my self reliant life style.

      I really understand all that you are saying, when watching your content on your MCQ channel, I really did appreciate how much time it must have took to setup those camera angles. I always thought about it while watching.
      If you do decide to come back and start making content on that channel just know, it doesn't matter how much good camera angles, lighting, good shots you think you need to setup to make the content good. Me and many others would probably agree we just enjoyed you as a person and watching your content, you as a person are very entertaining to watch your content is very therapeutic to watch and take in.
      Off topic, but I've often felt disconnected with reality a lot of times after spending an overwhelming majority of my 22 years inside and not doing very much.. but I'm working on changing that and have for quite a few years but I'm at a point where I can actually enact on those desires. Your videos have always give me a sense of peace. I've watched every single video on your MCQ channel and enjoyed every minute. You've honestly inspired me to get outdoors recently and explore the world around me, as being stuck inside and not doing very much takes a mental toll on you, but you've helped push me and I thank you for that.
      Don't worry about trying to make the "perfect" content, because I think people would like you all the same if you just filmed your time out, or maybe took a video occasionally of the content you used to make just without the copious amount of time spend setting everything up. Me and many others would just happily sit there and listen to you speak, inform and share you knowledge and experience.
      Good little idea to think about maybe is to upload a video explaining everything on the MCQ channel, because I suspect a lot of people are probably wondering where you are as was I.
      Anyway, I've probably ranted long enough, and what ever content you decide to post for the future, or if you decide to upload more on the other channel.. many of us will be waiting to support you and make sure to always do what makes you the happiest.

      I was going to ask that too moejr14.
      From a complete no knowledge base though, I was going to ask if you could work with less / get through your trips with less lift. As at least in the summer videos you are quite sensible on your destinations and risk factors (having watched you, quite rightly turn around from sketchy roads). Might create less downstream cost and issues.
