Jeep XJ Clutch Install and a Noisy AX15 and NP231

  • After some insane vibrations on the Jeep I had no choice but to pull the drive train for inspection. The transmission and t-case have done over 20 years of service with pretty low mileage but large tires and a high suspension lift. My first thoughts were the clutch but sadly the transmission itself had some excessive wear that would require a rebuild if used again.
    I was lucky that my spare engine came with a low mileage AX15 and Np231J that have seen no offroad uses and were largely unused for many years. The condition of both were much better and with the new clutch and refaced flywheel have made a huge difference!

    "And he awoke ,but to his great dismay, the realization of his reality had reached waaay back and slapped the vision of grandeur from his eyes and the sweetness of bliss from his mouth. With a howl of anger and despair he gave in to his heart's new desire and slowly released the jack supporting the weight of ol jeepy, dropping the mass of steel upon his weary and now deflated skull, quietly removing the existence of his once glorious life from the drudgery of owning a jeep."

    When I did my manual swap I ended up sat under the jeep cross legged with my head in the transmission tunnel, facing the engine, then I somehow managed to drag the gearbox into my lap, and literally hump it up with my legs then push it into place. It was horrific and at one point I almost castrated myself, that is the first and definitely the last time I replace a gearbox on my own

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  Рік тому +1

      I didn't film the pulling of the transmission. Its quite simple though. Basically I disconnected the transfer case linkage from the T-case and then removed the clutch cylinder from the back of the transmission. Its just two bolts.
      After that I took off the front and rear drive shafts. Then I put a jack under the transmission with a block of wood in-between. You can then remove the four crossmember bolts from the transmission and also the two each side that hold it to the frame. Make sure you open the bonnet also so nothing presses against it when the engine turns nose up.
      Now take away the crossmember and begin lowering the jack and the whole thing will start to lower. Once lowered enough removed the two electrical connectors from the transmission and the one from the T-case. Transfer case fluid will poor out the back by the way so have a rag or something around the rear output seal.
      You can now also remove the four bolts that hold the gear stick at the top. They are 12mm. That will let you pull up the stick away from the transmission. Now you can remove all of the larger bolts that hold it to the bell housing. There are 6 I think but then also two small 11mm bolts that hold the cps in place and I would take those out also. Once this is done its all free to pull back but its very heavy and a proper transmission jack would make it so much safer.

    Hello! Thanks for your channel! I have a Cherokee XJ with the same engine as yours and an NV3550 gearbox. When the car is warmed up and when the clutch pedal is not pressed, the gearbox makes a lot of noise. I recently replaced the drive shaft bearing and clutch basket along with the release bearing. But the noise remains.. Can you tell me what could be the matter? Auto repair shops in my city don't want to take on this kind of work.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness

      Hey, did it make a lot of noise prior to the change of parts?

    • @MichaelYakunin
      @MichaelYakunin 9 місяців тому +1

      @@WorkshoptoWilderness Such a quick answer :-) The noise is the same before and after replacing the parts. But it only makes noise when it's hot. When the box is cold there is almost no noise.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  9 місяців тому +1

      It could possibly just be gear rollover. When the oil is warm and the clutch isn't depressed it can happen. Since your noise is before and after the part change it sounds like a bearing on the transaxle. The noise would go away when the clutch was pressed because the transaxle would disconnect from the fly wheel.
      In higher gears I assume you won't hear it as much but it's probably still there.

    I've always been under the impression that you want gl4 specific lube not gl4 and gl5 compatible but just gl4. I use gl4 specific lube from either redline or amsoil and it seems to make a big difference.
    I sent you a email a week ago roughly, I can't text you back I get an error message when i try. I forget exactly what I said in the email but I pulled out both style 6 pinion planets and I'd like to try and confirm which one you need then I'll send you all that stuff 😀 it looks like you need the one with the flat top tooth but i just want to confirm. So when you get a chance shoot me an email, there's no rush on my end though.
    Regarding the flywheel to crankshaft bolts when you were reading about turning it 75 degrees, usually when a torque spec requires a certain amount of turns after reaching a certain spec it means they are torque to yield bolts so they are single use and stretch a certain amount with the extra turning they require. Hopefully that makes sense to you, I don't feel like those bolts would be torque to yield though on a flywheel.
    I made some long studs for installing my transmission in my cherokee, I slotted the studs with a grinder so they can be installed and removed with a flat head screw driver and I use them every time I install a cherokee transmission it makes it super easy and fast to line up and push forward then you remove them and install bolts.
