  • Its time to upgrade the Dana 30 a little bit more. The Sleeves from Iron Rock Offroad have arrived along with some cheapo outer seals from Bandai.
    These are the final mods to the front Dana 30 High Pinion! Hopefully its a while before I have to visit it again but then again it is a Jeep....
    Thanks for Watching.

    These are more for keeping the tube itself from warping making the c clip take a looooot of load. The way everything bolts up theres a lot of load on a small part of the axle shaft itself. And it the tube bows itll want to pull outward on that c clip inside. Sleeves for axle shaft strength. Trusses for axle tube and pumpkin strength.

  • @jamesa7506
    @jamesa7506 Рік тому +4

    Welding a truss from the pumpkin to the tube (I think, and as others have stated) will give you the strengthening you're after.

      Yes, but how does a truss effect clearance around the axle? Will these be just as strong as a truss?

    Mine was the same way, and I ran the outer tube seals as well. Also did a truss at the same time. My guess is they compensate for tube seals

    Agree with everyone so far. Nobody busts a axle tube in the last outboard 3 inches.

  • @seanmacdonald8476

    It seems realistically you are not going to be able to create more strength at the tube to diff connection without some kind of truss. Regardless of where the insert sits the pivot point or stress point will be at the existing plug welds from the factory where the tube seals to the diff. I also could be thinking irrationally but seems that it doesn't really matter where you put it your strength gains will be in the tubes themselves. Tubes are probably loose from all those gimmicks you've been shoving in there throughout the years =].

      Yeah I see what your saying and I totally agree. I still don't understand why they make them longer.
      Adding a small truss from housing to tube with sleeves would be a good combo to add if your not pulling the axle. I will see, i've run this thing for 8/9 years without but hitting icy snow mounds at speed has got me thinking.

      @BRONZE_ROCK Рік тому +2

      @@WorkshoptoWilderness the reason they want that much clearance between the seal and the sleeve is if your seal wear a groove in the axle you can just put a new seal in deeper instead of having to scrap the axle shaft

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  Рік тому

      The seal on mine can only go in so far. The inside of the housing would require machining to allow the inner seal so go in any more.

    better to put sleeves inside first , then drill hole to weld.

    Nice Recap - Did you end up doing C-Gussets as well?
    I went the Outer Truss (Artec) and C-Gusset Route myself on the XJ camper. Bent the C's real bad on the last Dana 30...

      I haven't done them yet. My plan is to pull the axle t some stage and truss and C gusset it and then powder coat it. Its a smart move I think to reinforce the C's, I should have done them this time round. Thanks for watching.

    I received a bit of money recently from my father’s estate Mike. What company would you recommend for a tent setup for the roof? I liked the setup you have currently, but we are going into warmer weather here soon in SW Virginia. Of course future plans are dependent on the craniotomy coming up on 03/21. It’s hard to believe the surgery will be done on the thirteenth anniversary of the first craniotomy, which darn near turned me into a bloody vegetable. Cheers to ya mate. Remember, Carpe Diem every day. I was a high speed, low drag kinda guy until this happened to me. 🤙

      Ah mate I really hope that it all goes well. The 21st isnt long away and I will be rooting for you. I think the best part of every day is spending time with my son Max. I've built more lego forts than I've done jobs on my Jeep and I will probabaly be building another tomorrow haha.
      I would highly recommend the Tent I have (Wildland Desert Cruiser). it functions really well in summer or winter although in winter some extra insulation under the sleep mat.
      How are you feeling about the Opp?

      I appreciate the advice amigo. I’ve been a fan of this channel for some time. But a real subscriber to McQBushcraft for longer still.
      Since this will be the 5th craniotomy in 13 years, I am scared but ready to accept my fate. This surgery will be to remove as much malignancy as possible. Three of the five earlier surgeries were to correct errors that happened In the initial craniotomy. During the first one I had a mini stroke, then contracted MRSA when improperly sterilized staple removers were used.
      Ironically Mike, 51 I’m glad to still feel 30 most days.

    Is this better than solder a over axle truss? Thanks for the XJ tips!

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  Рік тому +2

      No not at all. To be honest most see inner sleeves as a waste of time because a truss with solve all the problems a sleeve cant including what the sleeve can.
      A truss means removing the axle and the work is quite involved. Some trusses have new spring perches and control arm mounts and not everyone wants to get into that.
      Sleeves add a lot of strength to the tube and if you don't want to pull the axle you can add sleeves and a small truss from the pumpkin to the longer axle tube and you have a very solid housing without too much work.
      Thanks for watching.

    I'm willing to bet every axle you saw in an installation video had slightly belt tubes. A slightly bent tube would cause the insert to be hard going in.
