Another true rock band that deserves to be in the RRHOF! Randy Bachman had BTO as well as The Guess Who and neither has ever been inducted. It’s a disgrace that his accomplishments in rock and roll have been ignored.
Tell you the truth Canadian rockers have been getting more air play in the states now then it did after release hall of fame is bullshit anyway after they started letting rappers a all that regurgitated disco music.
First rock n roll song my oldest son ever liked. He was only about 3 yrs old and would go around the house singing it all the time. Now, at 52, he sings all kinds of rock classics with his band.
I was in HS in the 70's and one of our teachers was late getting to class he said he was taking care of business and of course the entire class started singing the opening guitar riff, the teacher had a stunned look on his face.

The Bachman brothers lived in New West BC in the early 80's and I ran into Randy a few times. He is an encyclopedia of knowledge when it comes to music and especially guitar riffs. Amazing musician
Funny how people don't listen to any of the lyrics beyond Taking Care of Business. It's about being a lazy musician who doesn't want an office job or any other job that takes effort.
@@alukuhito Randy's father was the inspiration for the line "I love to work at nothing all day". Basically his father thought he did exactly that, only working at night and lazing around during the day but in fact he was writing songs, rehearsing etc. Never "not working', really.
Love the music of Canadian bands in the seventies Rush, Trooper, BTO, The Guess Who, April Wine, Triumph and so many others that I listened to religiously all through my high school years. 😊
One of my favorite bands. Basically the song is about not doing the whole 9-5 grind for work. Being in a band and basically working for yourself. Taking care of business. You really hear it in the line It’s the work that we avoid cause we’re all self employed. We love to work at nothing all day. Living the rock star’s dream.
I'm glad you guys covered this! My wife and I flew from Houston to Toronto, Ontario Canada in July 2022 to see him and Burton Cummings (they were in The Guess Who together. This was the first song I danced to with a girl back in 1974 when I joined the Air Force!
UA-cam channel Professor of Rock does a great dive into the background of this song. He had an awesome interview with Randy Bachman and the story of the pizza delivery guy who played the piano on this tune.. And ya, like others have commented.. I've heard this song probably 1000 times. It never gets old.
That story about the pizza guy is a total fabrication by Randy. Randy tells a lot of stories that are just not true. Norman Durkee was a studio musician working in the other room and the engineer suggested that he play some piano on the song. He did write some notes on a pizza box to help himself craft the piano part that he plays on the song.
Ironic that this comes out of the same livestream as "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature", since this is Randy Bachman's band *after* he left The Guess Who. (Who kept on well enough without him for several albums.) Randy doesn't have Burton Cummings's supple voice, but he's powerful enough, and his guitar work is still excellent. You could even alternate songs from the two groups, as you've accidentally done here.
Hey guys what's up! Greetings from South Florida! BTO is a little before my time. But the older kids in my neighborhood had a band, and they played this song. We thought they were Rock superstars. Looking back though they were pretty bad. Have a great weekend guys! God bless you! Peace!

Hello Brad and Lex, I'm Andrew. I've had so much fun watching you guys discover all the amazing blues based HARD ROCK from the 70's and 80's. I'm sure I speak for a lot of old rock'n'rollers, but watching you guys brings me back. Brad, I love your appreciation of, and your desire to understand the lyrics. The song is "Never Again" by Nickleback, enjoy!
Randy Bachman who is singing and playing guitar in this song was in the Guess Who which you just reacted to. He co-wrote the No Sugar Tonight / New Mother Nature song you just reacted to. After he left the Guess Who he started this band. They were huge in the 70’s. All over the radio back then.

This Canadian group knows how to rock. Gimme Your Money Please, Blue Collar and Let It Ride are worth a listen. Many of their songs are bangers and are good driving music.
This song has definitely been in movies. This is what Wikipedia says: "Takin' Care of Business" has been used in multiple television shows and films, giving the song more recent popularity. Brad & Lex, their "Roll On Down The Highway" is next for you!! You've done their 3 best songs imo. edit- love the piano also! I read the piano was played by the pizza delivery man.
That was a mischievous prank that BTO had fun spreading. The reality was there was a prominent Studio piano player named Norman Durkee I believe and he was recording Jingles next door and the studio Tech for BTO noticed that and asked if he could come over and lay down a piano track real quick. Cuz they thought it needed a banging piano and so the guy only had a few minutes and they wrote the cords out on a pizza box and then he recorded it in one take.
Randy Bachman is a really nice guy. Had or has a radio programme on CBC radio called vinyl tap. Talks about and plays music from the 50s to current and all the background and backstory about the music biz. Very entertaining show. Should still be able to hear it and it is worth listening to.
Lex. You are the cutest little thing reacting on these oldies. Keep your delightful spirit. Brad, you seem like a very mature young man. You guys do a very good job. God Bless you in your lives and may the Lord Bless your lives!!
If there's one thing the Staples office supply store chain did for the world, it's put this song in their commercials. All the young kids are like "I've heard this song somewhere!"
Interesting that this was uploaded right after the Guess Who. Randy Bachman in the Guess Who started working on this song while he was still in the Guess Who but finished it with BTO and like everyone says, it's been in television and movies presidential campaigns everything. It was on The Simpsons, it was the theme music for Office Depot in the 90s, just everywhere. And the saying is older than that because Elvis said it all the time before that. In fact he had all these rings made up that said TCB and handed them out all the time and in fact he called his backing band The TCB band. Aretha Franklin also referenced the phrase and her hit RESPECT.
This reminds me of a great Simpson’s episode where this band is on stage trying to play new stuff and Homer keeps yelling at them to play ‘taking care of business’ 😂 ‘workin over time work out!
Whenever he was on tour or in the studio, Elvis would tell everyone he was "Takin' care of business". He even had a big gold ring with TCB that he wore on stage. That's where Randy Bachman got the idea for this song.
Lex, "Little Gandy Dancer" and "Hold Back the Water" are 2 of their best that no one reacts to. We seem to have similar music tastes so I think you will like them. Hi Brad.
This is a super popular, iconic song. Tons of radio play. Goes well with Doobie Bros "Listen to the Music." It's about being a musician, as opposed to being a factory worker or office worker. (America still had factory work back then.) You get to lounge around all day doing fun stuff. Different takes on the idea of being a musician show up in songs I think you've already covered, like "Money For Nothing" by Dire Straits, "Stuck in the Middle With You" by Stealers Wheel, and "Welcome to the Machine" by Pink Floyd.
They used to play this during timeouts at NBA/Pacers games in Indianapolis generally when the home team was on a roll with scoring and TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS on the court.
Rolling on down the highway in a 68 Mustang, blasting the stereo, listening to the pounding beat of an American V-8 . Lady with a halter top rolling a doobie in the front seat. Sweeet

Randy Bachman initially began writing this song in response to a comment by his father that he does nothing all day. Basically his father saw work as a 9-5 proposition. Randy completed song while working with BTO..
Originally the song was written with no piano in it...record executive insisted there be piano...told the band to come back when piano was added...love you guys.

You’re putting out stuff faster than I’m able to watch - and no, I’m not complaining!
Office Depot used as their theme song, now John Deere.

You two are making a lot of Canadians happy today including me ✌🇨🇦❤ can I suggest that on Canada Day July 1st that's our celebration you can do a Canadian segment on our entertainers. Thanks ❤ ✌ 🇨🇦
