This song reached #1 in 22 countries. One of Bachman's brother stuttered and Randy sang it that way once just to tease him. Everyone loved it and it was released like that. The drummer is also one of Randy's brothers who sadly recently passed away. A great Canadian band.
Here's the backstory from Randy himself. ua-cam.com/video/TSp8Vo1WzdQ/v-deo.htmlsi=c9HT6eSyUQZkDbLC
What I read or heard was, they made two versions of this song. First they did a straight version and then as a joke they did the version with the stuttering with Randy imitating his brother's speech impediment and when they sent it to the record label, they accidentally sent the wrong version. That's what I read anyway.
Also.... just since this comment had so many hits... I will add this as well... so Peg will hopefully see this!!! Randy Bachman.. started out with The Guess Who.. with Burton Cummings.. and once that band disbanded.. he started BTO as we all know them... with his brothers and Fred Turner... and well.. that band had huge success as well.. with a slew of hits!!!! Canadian content again for the win!!!! 🤩🥰🍁🍁🍁🍁
The 70s and 80s was a wild time to grow up. The music was amazing. So many unbelievable artists back then.
@@jcooper6451 Too bad you missed the 60's, but I didn't.
The older I get, the more I love 70s music! So glad I grew up with it.
👍💯🍻
Rock, Disco and Funk! The best era!
This song was never supposed to be aired. It was written to tease the lead singers brother on his birthday about his first time with a girl. The brother had a stuttering problem. Their record producer who was at the party said you have to record it. They said well we can clean it up and get rid of the stutter. The producer said no. To record it as it was. And now it is a classic.
Thanks
Actually, their producer said to take out the stuttering part before they could record it and told Randy to sing it the normal way. After hearing it, it just didn't sound the same, so he said scratch that idea and lets do it with the stuttering lyrics. It was recorded that way and the rest is history..
Hilarious! Randy Bachman was the producer so your story is wrong on so many levels.
@@ausfuhrpramienjagar Again - Randy Bachman was the producer so your story is also wrong just like the first post in this thread.
@@BobSoltis1 Not wrong at all. I meant to say Manager and not Producer. So what? Point is, it was tried in both versions and there was a reason behind the stuttering version being recorded instead.
BTO is the acronym for them. The stutter is a nod to his brother who did have a stutter. Heart❤
Yep..that's what he said many years ago in an interview enquiring about his reason for stuttering in the song.
The song was recorded as kind of a joke, but the public liked it
Abbreviation.
Thank you 👍
3 Bachmans + 1 Turner = BTO... Great Canadian band with songs Takin' Care of Business, Roll On Down the Highway, Let It Ride! I remember as a kid dancing & playing air guitar with a hairbrush mic to all their songs and I'm still a Gearhead!
Overdrive came from “overdrive trucking magazine”
Most of their hits came after Randy fired his brother Tim and added guitarist Blair Thornton.
Listening on 8-track!
Takin Care of Business is great too
We also had disco,so mixed bag. Bto had guess who member have a few bangers
He did not have a stutter. His brother did. He did this for his brother. Love this song!!
Once you hear it you never forget it!! 💙
Takin care of business was very popular. One of their biggest hits
I agree! I really hope he plays it! Please BP! Takin Care Of Business is the name of it!
I am going to see them live on Monday. They are still rocking at 80.
What state or country are they playing?
Awesome ❤❤❤
Go Gearheads!
one of the main members just died in the last couple of months
Party Hardy!!!👍👍👍
The 70's was a GLORIOUS time to grow up in. It was a very special time.
1970-1980 I was 13-23 years of age. I am so humbly grateful to have grown up with all of this ICONIC music, but the thing is we really did not know how great is was or even the eventual impact it would have on this history of rock-n-roll. We just knew it was good, real good and that listening to it removed us from the pains of everyday life. As it turns out, the music was far greater than I could have ever imagined. I am now 67 years-old and I NEVER grow tired of listening to these artists of the 70's that made rock-n-roll history. I can't even fathom my life without this music. Must-listen: Taking Care of Business! Great reaction, as always!. TY
Same for me. I have always said and always will that the 70's produced the best music! Plus to see them all in concert without having to pay a fortune! I love to see the reactors hearing our songs for the first time.
I am the same age and am in full agreement!
Same here. At 18 I got a job at the small city local radio station as the all night announcer in 1975. I was totally surrounded by the hits at the time. Best. Job. Ever. ❤🔥
I'm 10 years behind you, but the youngest in my family so I was exposed to all the great 70's music - and 60s, too. I mean, I was in HS in the 80s, and I love 80s new wave rock (depeche mode, Duran Duran, Blondie, Talking Heads, The Cars, etc.), but the 70s were THE BOMB!!
Well from 70 to 80 I was 4 to 12 years of age... But I can tell you those are the best darn years of my little life
I’m a product of the 70’s . Love when you react to this decade.
Me too was born 1962 Jan 20th so teenager in 1975
@@williamreiser3118 0ctober 1963 model here.
🎉Love me some BTO. Bachman was also a founding member of the Guess Who
BTO was a staple of everyone’s must have 8 track collection back in my teen years. They have so many great tracks. Taking Care of Business is a must hear for real. Ps. The stutter was a tribute to Randy Bachmans brother who has a stuttering issue. Rolling down the highway is my favorite track by them. No doubt
The player ate my tape. Don't hear that anymore. Ah, sweet memories.✌
As a youngster riding in my dad's pickup, BTO was a staple in the 8 track.
"Taking Care Of Business","Let It Ride","Roll On Down The Highway".
BTO is one of the best Canadian bands ever. They are pure 🔥.
Good memories in 70’s, driving around playing BTO on my 8-track player 💪
And then you got that kthunk when the 8-track jumped. Dem ole times
Randy Bachman played with Burton Cummings in the Guess Who and is credited as co composer (with Cummings) on the majority of their songs.
PLEASE DO IN THE SUMMERTIME BY MUNGO JERRY!!! This is legit the third or fourth time he has come up in ur suggested videos!! 😁🙏
For sure! Gotta be the video though!!
Second this!
I remember reading these guys stayed humble because they were often mistaken for roadies when they showed up for their shows. Just big guys in jeans and regular shirts often.
Thanks for all these reactions. You are bringing some wonderful memories back. Hanging out smoking and sneaking beers in the empty lot by the MAAG teen club... a huge cassette deck blasting our mix tapes off the radio ...
Ah....1974. What a glorious time. This song transports me back. Where did 50 years go?!
Love this song. the beat, everything is for me perfect !!! "According to Bachman, the song was performed as a joke for his brother, Gary, who had a stutter. They only intended to record it once with the stutter and send the only recording to Gary."
I never knew, TY. A lot of iconic songs were written in this manner.
Thank you. I had heard this story before.
They also won Best sone with a stutter from the International Stutterers alliance or some thing like it.
Molly Hatchett "Flirting with Disaster ", another banger of southern rock
BTO is actually Northetn rock, but I agree! Wicked good song!!!
Bachman Turner Overdrive or BTO is a Canadian band named for the members, Brothers Randy, Robbie and Tim Bachman and Fred Turner. Randy, Robbie and Fred all sing in the group and all have great rock voices. Tim and Robbie both passed away last year 2023, RIP. Randy is on lead in this song. This song was an afterthought and was not originally going to be included in this album. It was done as a joke because his brother had a stutter. They liked what they heard and included the stutter in the song. I got to see them live in 1986 opening up for Van Halen/Hagar. Some other bangers by them, "Takin' Care Of Business", "Roll On Down The Highway", "Hey You", and "Let It Ride". Thanks and God Bless.
Bachman Turner Overdrive BTO Canadian band
This song was never meant to be releases as it was a Joke of the lead singers brother who had a stutter. It was heard by a record exec and they made them put it on the album and it became a huge hit.
💯 I was about to say the same thing❤❤ I’ve always loved this song❤
My husband helped build Randy Bachmans house in Blaine WA. Randy frequently comes down to a little bar in our home town. Most don't recognize him, he's just a cook dude. I grew up with them. Great music. ❤
And MY husband helped build his house on Salt Spring Island, late 1990’s…lol. Yup, just a regular guy❤️
Love these classic songs. We had a jukebox in our home in the 70s and music was always playing. It was a lovely way to grow up.
How cool is that! Wow!
Randy Bachman was lead guitarist and song writer for The Guess Who. He established the Guess Who and recruited Burton Cummings as lead singer.
Bachman did NOT establish the Guess Who. He was part of a group that morphed into The Guess Who. He was the co-songwriter with Burton Cummings until he left the group.
BTO is so underrated, their music is in everything!
Extremely underated
The pride of Winnipeg Manitoba Canada, BTO was the ultimate driving music back in the 70's! Drop down the top, throw in an 8 track tape of BTO's greatest hits and get on down the highway!. Robbie Bachman on drums was one of the 3 original brothers in the group along with Fred Turner on Bass. Robbie was a very underrated drummer and deserved much more recognition from the rock world for his great stick work. Sadly he passed away just a year and a half ago at the young age of 69, at his home in British Columbia, Canada. And yeah, bro! You need to react to that "Roll On Down The Highway" next. That live version such as this one.. Also "Let It Ride" is a monster smash! 🙂
The 70's.... we had the best music ever written.
Taking care of Business is also a great one.
Take the 8:15 into the city....
@@murrayspiffy2815 and if your train’s on time you can get to work by 9:00 to start your slaving job to get your pay.
Seen them. BTO great band
"Let it Ride" is a BANGER!!! 🔥❤️
You got great taste.
The glorious 70s what a time to be a teenager things were crazy😊
BTO, 'Let it ride' vocals by bassist Fred Turner. Gotta listen
Yes, let it ride
"Taking care of business" is a good one but one of my favorites is "Blue Collar". Also "Roll on down the highway" is a banger.
Every wedding reception I've been to, plays this song & all of a sudden everyone's dancing.
I'm so proud to be from the 70's. The best music ever.
Oh Mungo Jerry yes please. We're 36C here and In the Summertime would be epic. And more BTO, go Canada...
Randy is very under rated. He was also in The Guess Who. Not many that can bring multiple bands to the top of the charts.
Oh, you mentioned Mungo Jerry... Go there. Please! Good times, good music.
21 when this was out- '70's were GLORIOUS !! 😅
"Let it Ride" is a definite addition to the Playlist bro!
The stutter is for his brother. Speaking of brothers....Statler Brothers, Everly Brothers, Bellamy Brothers, and Blues Brothers
Righteous Brothers (I know), but neither are the Blues Brothers.
Statler brothers weren't brothers either.
@howardwhite5131 well, two were brothers, just not named Statler.
You’re right the 70s was fire. I was a teenager in the 70s and I wouldn’t have wanted to be a teenager any other time! We had the best music and the best cars
Roll on Down the Highway… perfect road trip song.
This was always one of my favorite songs! I really wish somebody would do it justice and make it over. I think revamping it for present day would appeal to a lot of people.
were you thinking same rock style or something else?
@@eurofritz4617 To put a different spin on it. A different arrangement, maybe like a Linkin Park/club style??? I just think this generation would vibe with it, because the hook and lyrics are transferable. I was born in 1971, but still appreciate new stuff. I could actually see this type of song playing in a gentleman's club lol
@@Dawnofcreation I did up a quick "nu-metal" cover of the song and then did another with a "club beat". I kinda like the club beat version lol and will probably try another run at the song when I have more time. Check them out and let me know what you think.
I graduated in 1975 BTO was our classes favorite band!❤
Love your digs. You are uncovering so many classics. Great archaeologist.
An iconic hit that was constantly on the radio.
There naming a bridge in his hometown the Bachman Turner OverPass
Couple of brothers in the band. They were really hot for about 3-4 years. This is from their 1974 album “Not Fragile”. Check out “Rock is My Life, This is My Song”, “Not Fragile” and “Roll on Down the Highway” and then “Four Wheel Drive” and “Hey You” from their 1975 album “Four Wheel Drive”
All good songs all play list songs..
@@ricksurratt9034 True!
"Let it ride" is good too.
Listen to the bass tone in this song. One of the sweetest roundest tones ever produced. Fred was KILLING it.
My first concert in 1976 BTO I was 13 mom paid a scalper $13 and sent me in alone and when I floated out after she knew I had a good time
BT F'in O. As a 1988 high school grad this song comes on the party gets a little more live.
Randy Bachman did a 16-year run on CBC radio with his program This is Vinyl Tap. It was cancelled in 2022, but it was brilliant! He’ was picked up by syndicated radio to do the same thing.
I am so pleased with the diversity of your music. So many of these bring back great memories.
Wow, this brings back memories from a roadtrip with my Dynamite 8 and a new BTO 8Track.
Takin' Care of Business and Let It Ride are two other big hits from BTO. Randy Bachman was also with the Guess Who, and there are many more hits down the Guess Who rabbit hole. Takin' Care of Business (TCB) became one of Elvis Presley's mantras and he wore a TCB (with lightning bolt) necklace in his last years.
The story I heard was this was never supposed to be released. It was just a studio warm up & joke track for Randy Bachman's (singer) brother who shutters (hence the stutter & silly voice he sings this in). The producer heard it & said if they release it, they'd be performing it for the rest of their lives as their biggest hit :)
Busted out laughing when BP said Bachman Turner Overdrive "sounds like an extreme race care" 🏁
This is another biker bar jam for me. 🏍🤘
It's like George Thoroughgood, he also does it in Bad to the Bone, bbbb bad to the bone.
Taking Care of Business is another great hit of theirs.
I was on a big BTO kick when I was 13-14. In fact, my first HS girlfriend bought me the BTO album FOUR WHEEL DRIVE in 1974 at the end of my freshman year as a going away present (My family moved to a city 6 hours away, and there goes my first love). She was such a cute hottie...and I later found out that she ended up being voted Homecoming Queen for Senior Year of the HS I would have graduated from). Anyway, loved my BTO back then.
Randy Bachman the lead singer/guitarist was formerly in the very popular band The Guess Who with Burton Cummings. A very talented songwriter.
Now that there is a full sounding outfit. Sounds like more than just 4 dudes BTO was a force to rekon with just as Grand Funk were❤️🤘roll on down the highway is tasty
I remember these guys in the early 70's the album Not Fragile
Let it ride and Taking care of business
I graduated HS in 75. The 70's was a great time to be alive. Some much great music, I doubt if it will ever happen again. I my be old, but I got to see a lot of great bands.
1993 front row! In a park. My six year old boy yelling come on mama dance! Made me so very happy to remember that! Thank you so much!
A certifiable classic.
Let It Ride is a banger too.
70's...simply the best
For the record both "In the Summertime" by Mungo Jerry and "Radar Love" by Golden Earring are *fire* .
BTO in the house!!! CLASSIC FEEL GOOD SONG!! PLAYLIST?? ABSOLUTELY!! BEEN ON MINE FOR ALMOST 40 YEARS!!!😊😊😊
BTO takes me back...more memories....walking the fairgrounds with great tunes playing, and the concerts....
It was sang with a stutter in honor of Bachman's brother, Glen, that did indeed stutter. So you were pretty on point BP.
BTO!!! Great band!! Golden Earring Radar Love is fire too!! Don't listen to it when driving unless you want a speeding ticket lol!!
Love this one!!
I'm biased because it is my generation but the 70's really were special in the music world!
I was 14. I love '60s, '70s, & '80s music!
Hey man, "Let It Ride", and "Takin' Care of Business", each are great songs, and signatures of the 70's, early 70's is the greatest.
Named for the band members. Bachman and Turner.
Takin" Care of Business is probably their biggest hit
Let it Ride is my favorite by them.
The stutter - was a homage to his brother - who did stutter. He grew up with a stuttering brother - and was just used to it as an everyday part of of his life - and put the pattern into a song.
For Gen X, the 70s and 80s were the best time to be alive.
Back up a little....'60's etc..😂
@@petegregory517 Well, I was born in 67, but I don't really remember those years.😛
@@iSoldat 👍 [replied once but can't find it, edited it and pfft, gone! anyway.....] I figured you were a pup, only 3 years older than my son.😄🫡
One of the oldest GenX folks around (Jan of 65) and I approve of this message!
Oh yeah .
I heard his brother stutters and he was teasing him then decided to keep it in the song. It was a big hit
They were my 2nd concert...1974. Fabulous!❤
The 70's were the best times for music!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🎤🎤🎤
I was 18 years old when this song came out! Oh the fun times we had 🤣❤️✌🏻🎶
History.... The Guess Who lead guitar player, Bachman, quit that band and eventually formed Bachman Turner Overdrive (with two of his brothers, 3 Bachmans in the band, and a guy named Turner).
A neighbor of mine had the car and the '8 Track' of this we wore it out. BTO and Steely Dan come back to me quick. Great time to be a kid turning in to an adult...
You're so right about the music '70's. So much came out and we just took it as normal. As time went on, we realize how lucky we were for the music then. SO much in late '60's, 70's and they even kept on producing into the early '80's.
I was there in the 70s and if I had to choose one decade of music to listen to for the rest of my life it would be this one. I was really young, a child in this era but the music stayed with me. And the stammer I believe is deliberate and for me it makes the song stand out, it's really cool.
BTO was so awesome. I remember this song. I could listen to this every day. Love your reaction!
Love BTO. Amazing memories. Thanks for reacting.
Oh I was 14 in Melbourne Australia when this was huge here. So many memories of wagging school, hanging out at the Nunawading Pool over summer. It was a great time for me!😊
Chances are you familiar with the hook, but "Taken Care of Business' needs to be your next one
