You have to laugh. Asking an airborne division to surrender just because they are surrounded. Men literally trained to drop in behind enemy lines, their very job is to be surrounded.

@@VloggingThroughHistory the only thing i don't like about Band of Brothers, is a few of the inaccuracies, like Albert Blithe they portray getting killed in the show after taking a bullet to the neck and even put an "en memorium" quite at the end of it on the just black screen saying he never recovered and died in 1948, *did not actually die there* he made it home and died in 1967.
After I learned that, and a few other things i can't remember, it made me respect that show a good bit less. so now, i watch it as a show and enjoy it for what it is, but i take it all with a few grains of salt now. Just a good watch here for a few of those who might be interested to knwo some more about what things Band of Brothers got wrong here from the History Buffs channel.
Not sure if you'd be interested in doing a reaction to this one as well but i'll leave the link to the video here: ua-cam.com/video/uxv3s7xTYHU/v-deo.html

So recently I started playing Bolt Action, the WWII tabletop game, with some friends. One night I was texting back and forth with one of my buddies who was in the 82nd about what forces we were going to be building for the game. I had just bought a US airborne box set and couldn't resist pulling his leg a bit. I told him, "I'm thinking of painting them up as the 101st. Those guys are like the best airborne right, absolutely top tier?". The wall of text I received back explaining how the 82nd was always the best, both in WWII and currently, and always would be was epic.

But I am saddened that not even once did anyone show or tell us about Sabaton.
They're doing such an amazing memory work, and I'm fairly convinced the reason they wouldn't be showed is just because it's heavy metal music, if I was a history teacher my students would all know all of Sabaton songs by heart by the end of their first year with me !

3 weeks ago in the Ardennes we found to boxes of 30-06. 500 rounds of alternating AP, tracers and full metal jackets. Found next to an old gunner's hole. It's a remote village yet our plot of land covers what used to be a small airfield. In that same plot of land a trench of about 2m depth spans for 10m. The remnants of a crash of a bomber that was shot down, small debri of twisted metal still remaining. A little further bomb craters still can be fallen into. It's funny how we consider it history yet still the scars remain in nature. One of the boxes was so rusted it basically fell to pieces it's content rusted too. The other one protected it's content incredibly well, so much the casings still shine. In a couple of days we will buy a 30-06 to fire some of those bullets.

    Market Garden baffles me.
I don't know what kind of intel Montgomery and his staff were working off of, but to think that the country that bypassed the Maginot line through the low countries not once, but twice....would fall to the same tactic and leave that area underdefended just seems insane to me.

    • @warrior7ra
      @warrior7ra 3 роки тому +14

Monty and his Staff ignored the intel to the point of reliving the senior intelligence commander because he was "rocking the boat". Monty saw this as his chance to outshine Patton and prove he deserved to be the Supreme Allied Commander. What it actually tragically proved is his incompetence on a grand scale as this was not his first serious flop the others were swept under the rug and he was given credit for beating the Africa Corps. Which also wasn't true by the way. The Brits had many Commanders that were vastly superior to Monty but not his pedigree or political connections. They get bo credit but they are the reason for Monty's successes amazing how many of his senior commander ignored him and coordinated amogst themselves.

@@warrior7ra Almost a success though, would have been interesting if the 82nd had bothered to secure then Nijmegen Bridge, which was a simple objective when compared to the D-Day objectives... unfortunately there commander was convinced there where Germans in the trees to the East of there landing though there was no intel of this prior to there jump. Thus the British XXX Corps was held up and couldn't push on until secured. Even after the 82nd heroism in taking the bridge via boats.

    • @JohnDoe-wt9ek
      @JohnDoe-wt9ek 3 роки тому +1

@@wulfen2990 Sounds reasonable enough when capturing a location and having to ensure that your position is secure. Especially when the only reinforcements coming in would be from the East heading in. Especially when considering the fact that, during the same Op, the 101st fought in ever cardinal direction to secure Eindhoven and prevent German counter attack on the main road passing through.
Coupled the fact that the Germans had loaded the bridge with explosives prior (as part of their own scorched earth policy), Gavin and his men had to traverse the river in heavy currents against a heavily defended shore line. They secured the other side, prevented the charges from blowing (though, I'm not sure if it was actually securing said detonators, or if the rigging for explosives were faulty and failed to activate at the pivotal moment when Gavin's men made the shore). It was after securing Nijmegan that the Royal XXX Corps stopped for the evening, despite both units seeing the flash of ordnance in the final objective of Arnhem. Gavin was ready to go with his men to the rescue of the Polish 1st Airborne and the British Red Devils. It was the British XXX Corps that decided to wait, for fear of a "friendly fire" incident. It was that crucial decision that led to its failure.
Never mind the fact that Montgomery came up with a half assed plan in 7 days' time, with the crux of the operation relying on three separate, unsupported air drops along a salient as thin as a pencil, against an enemy presumed to be old men and boys, without proper reconnaissance or intel, and having no security along said highway. There's a reason the 101st Airborne called it "Hell's Highway". German armor and infantry would attack every step of the way, hitting wherever they could, and stopping the conga line of armor and support vehicles, buying time in stopping the Red Devils and Polish Airborne from receiving that vital support. Hours would be spent clearing damaged or destroyed vehicles in an effort to open the causeway in. And would rinse, wash, repeat the whole way there.
Montgomery's plan was a failure before it started. And he should have been given the boot when it failed so miserably, costing the Airborne Initiative the Allies held for so long.

    • @wulfen2990
      @wulfen2990 3 роки тому

@@JohnDoe-wt9ek your not wrong about the plan being flawed however it was just Montgomery's plan he wasn't involved in the operation after that as he was tied up elsewhere. The plan could have potentially been re-worked or scrapped but no one wanted to be the one to shake the boat so to speak..
Whilst your comments about the crossing of the river to secure the boat are correct they aren't really relevant to my point, it was essential to do it at the time but only cause the 82nd had already messed up in not sending anyone to secure the bridge after landing, instead basically waiting till late in the day to do so. This regardless of anything else is a major screw up on the part of the 82nd, that can not be overlooked. The 82nd where able to spare troops to secure the bridge to there south but not the VITAL and Primary objective of Nijmegen Bridge? The bridge was also an easy take if they did basically undefended, but due to the delay in sending anyone it was secured by the Germans who arrived just ahead of the American unit who also got lost in the city and thus delayed (this was due to it now being dark, the troops tired after having to construct trenches/ fortify there position all day). There was no need to commit basically his who force on the ridge for a German attack from the East when there was no German troops reported to have been in the area. The only real attack from that side came the following day via a cobbled together force, who where easily repulsed.
Royal XXX Corps stopped for the evening cause there infantry where still fighting in the city, and exhausted from all the fighting to take the city/ Bridge. Had to wait for everything to be secure to ensure the supply route to the front.
End of the day whilst the plan was overly ambitious and flawed it might still have been a success had the 82nd secured the primary objective rather then prioritizing the fortification of the ridge they landed at against a force that never existed at the time (A force all intel prior to the take off and deployment of the 82nd said didn't exist)

As an aside I have to tell a bit of story. I'm retired Air Force as was stationed in Germany in the 90s. We took a tour to Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge memorial and later went to have lunch at a little village nearby. (Sorry, tearing up) Anyway while our group was in a little café something made a bunch of us look up as this elder gentleman made a misstep and crashed into the street. Immediately he was surrounded by about a dozen of us who helped him and checked him over. (I dusted off his hat and handed it back to him :) ) He suddenly got this huge grin as he looked at each of us... "American's, yes?" We nodded and his grin suddenly got twice as big. "Ah yes, American's! You were here to help us in 1945 and you are still helping us today" and he shook each of our hands and thanked us again and walked away. Needless to say getting out swelled heads back on the bus later was a bit of a chore but I have to admit that while I'm proud of my service in general this was one of the top things I will always be proud of.

The history of Old Abe (The Screaming Eagle) is unique in and of itself.
-Its the visage of the Eagle Mascot of the 8th Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment during the American Civil War.
-It was bought for $2.50 by said unit from a man named Daniel McCann (who, himself, bought the bird from a Native named Chief Sky for a bushel of corn).
-The unit, upon receiving their newly commemorated mascot, renamed themselves from the Eau Claire Badgers to the Eau Claire Eagles.
-The 8th Wisconsin would soon be activated into the Western Theater of the Civil War (Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama), and would carry Old Abe on a specially made perch with a shield, handled by a Sergeant.
-Old Abe would participate in every battle the 8th would be involved in, including Corinth, Iuka, Island Number 10, Big Black, Champion's Hill, Red River and Meridian Expeditions and the Battle of Nashville.
-It was so prestigious a battlefield prize, that its quoted of General Sterling Price at the Battle of Corinth "that bird must be captured or killed at all hazards, I would rather get that eagle than capture a whole brigade or a dozen battle flags."
-After 4 years, the 8th's enlistment term was complete, and upon return, 70 veterans presented Old Abe to the Governor of Wisconsin (James Lewis) as a donation to the people of the state.
-He would, not long after, become the mascot of a Chicagoan's movement (United Sanitary Commission) to provide aid and comfort to veterans. His visage would be placed on paper photographs and sold by children for the proceeds to be presented to veterans post Civil War.
-He would live the rest of his life as a rock star like appearance, traveling the country as a mascot representative for Veterans' benefits, support and charities, and in 1876, traveled the US once more as part of America's Centennial Expedition.
-He would live peacefully, the remainder of his years in the capitol building's aviary, until 1881 saw a fire break out from a paint and solvent storage plant.
-A month later, the tired old bird, weakened by the fumes caused by the fire, would die in his handler's arms (George Gilles).
-Upon his death, his body was preserved and placed at the historical Army of the Potomac Memorial Building, until that too would be destroyed by a fire. Where only a few feathers of his body would survive, which are now carefully preserved at the Wisconsin Veterans' Museum in Madison.
-His visage would live on in High School Teams, large sculptures stand atop the University of Wisconsin Football Stadium, where in 1861 was once stood Camp Randall, the 8th's original muster post.
-Upon the muster and stand up of the 101st Airborne Division, Old Abe was renditioned to the patch which is now symbolic to the 101st Airborne, and a large-scale diorama of the 8th Wisconsin's Colors, complete with Old Abe, reside inside the 101st Airborne Division museum in Fort Campbell, KY.

My Great-Uncle was at Arnhem, he was a British Paratrooper. He dropped in and they had to scramble 12 miles to get to the bridge. When the German resistance was too high, and the order for retreat was heard, he was in the middle of the bridge and ended up jumping off the bridge and into the river below. As he escaped a German sniper shot off the calf muscle on his lower leg. He has never talked about it with me, sadly, so I've garnered what I can from others in the family. Another Great-Uncle was a Desert Rat, but I know even less about him, unfortunately.
My Granddad was in the Merchant Navy during WW2 and his ship was sunk a number of times. The one he told me about, and the one that still haunts him, is the time that he didn't have shore leave but his other Midshipman buddy did. Except his friend's girl had just ended it, so he didn't want the leave. He traded it with my Granddad for a later time. The shift left port and never came back. All hands were lost that time.

Another band worth checking out for their historical songs (which aren't all of them, but form a sizeable portion) would be Iron Maiden.
    Aces High
    The Longest Day
    Paschendale
    The Trooper
    Alexander The Great
Empire Of The Clouds (their longest song to date, Bruce Dickinson also debuts as a performing pianist in it).
Just a few to get your teeth into.

If you have the time for it, here are some more Sabaton suggestions:
    -resist and bite
-primo Victoria (I'm surprised you haven't done this yet, it's one of their most famous songs)
    -white death
    -ghost division
    -rise of evil
    -panzerkampf
    -counterstrike
I love watching people discover one of my favourite bands, especially if they're knowledgeable in what the songs are about

Its really beautifull How Sabaton makes awesome músic and still show respect for every single man who gave his life in a horrible war despiste on which side he was on. I love this Band. I love the way they show How every mannout there was brave and was figjting for their lives and families and land, despiste which side he was on... At the end, soldiers were Just soldiers fighting for their home... Se should blame the ones in command, notnthe ones who fell for their home

You should hear the 82nd's point of view on this battle. On the 75th anniversary of this battle, I asked my father, a former paratrooper with the 82nd and history buff, if he knew what happened 75 years ago. I could hear his ego inflating as he was putting his own spin on it. Speaking of which, do 82nd all the way and, for this devil dog, Devil dogs.

You didn't mention it but a verse of the song saying Easy, as hard as it gets, touching again on Band of Brothers Easy Company, as the show focused entirely on Easy Company and the episode showed a great deal of their oldest friends were dying, some men were driven insane, some wandered into the woods to pee and froze to death, but Easy Company was hardened men that refused to give up their ground

Man, 101st airborne fighting in Bastogne is one of my favorite parts to learn about in ww2, and find it fascinating how the 101st held their ground alone in the blistering cold, like can’t feel your fingers with long seconds, low on ammunition, food, and communication, and yet we still beat the Germans,
Another song I recommend to listen and one of my top favorites, Resit and Bite, about 40 Belgians fought to hold the border against the Germans with forces around 25,000 I think it was, and the 40 Belgians with accurate shots made it seems like there was a lot, but once they were captured due to commutations fails and basically was to retreat but never made it out, once captured the German commander asked where’s the rest, Belgians said we were all

I don't know if you'll see this comment considering it's an older video. Regarding the bridge too far, Jeremy Clarkson did a great documentary that focuses mostly on that northern most bridge and a British glider pilot, Major Robert Henry Cain. It's called "The Victoria Cross: For Valour." I highly recommend watching that if you haven't already. I think you'd quite enjoy it.

"Into the Fire." The lyrics are pretty self-explanatory. By the way, my brother and I used to sit down and watch Band of Brothers every time it appeared on TV. Almost 2 decades after its release, I had the honor of meeting an active duty element of the 82d as they were transiting some random hole in the desert. You should have seen the holes in their socks. I guess some things never change.

For me sir. I enjoy the battles of history as I come from a long line of soldier, dating as far back to when the Merry queen of Scot's was alive. However since I was born blind in one eye I couldn't serve and continue that line so i turned to video games, books, and even history to fill that void. Oddly enough I like the naval battles and tank battles the most.
