"China's belt and road development " Its a ticket to bankruptcy and a giant debt trap for many 3rd World nations. Plus the Chinese often have security on the loans that they take over that is critical infrastructure for that nation and they are less forgiving than a Western lender if things head south with the country or the loan.

In my opinion These failing policies are not implemented by chance but on purpose - to keep Africa poor, so Western countries could have African riches for next to nothing + cheap labor. All Western Europe lives of the back of the poor countries. USA does it too, but they are different. Europe itself has next to nothing; very little natural recourses, very little in the way of industries, very little hard science (physicks, chemistry etc.)...What do they have to sustain their high level of living standards? I can't see anything what would be worth speaking about. Sure... little bit here or there, but nothing to justify their level of prosperity. So Africa and some other countries have to be poor, so Europe could exchange their "glass beads" for real gold...same as 100s of years ago.

    • @platosbeard4449

The US is the main issue as Europe is considerably weakened and bereft of an empire now. The US maintains over 800 military bases around the world and the real purpose of these bases is to maintain the U.S. global order: ie, the US empire. That global order ensures that the old colonial principle of extraction from and impoverishment of the third world continues unimpeded. And so it is only with the destruction of the US empire that Africa would be able to progress meaningfully. The empire is in deep trouble as I write and this is the time for Africa to ramp up the house cleaning and uproot vestiges of the US empire from the continent completely. It is not a matter of maintaining ties, such can be maintained with Europe as they are of minimal risk once the U.S. has been defanged, it is a matter of beheading the beast; and the beast is the US empire. There should be no hesitation about this, the diseased organism must be eradicated in order that Africa may live. Sachs hoping that Gates would give funds for educating Africa would be laughable if it weren’t tragic. He still fails to understand the geopolitical imperatives of the country he comes from. China rose on the system of stringent anti U.S. imperialism and that it is why it has been so successful. India which tried to grow as an appendage to the western imperialist system is riddled with poverty and underperforming its peer, China, by substantial factors while enriching a few compradors who remain attached to the U.S. empire.

There is no such thing as Africa, or Europe or America for that matter. These are ideas, nothing more. If America has taught the world anything, it has shown where Superpower leads. Will the world be better off with Africa or Asia on top? I don't think so. It will be the same as we have now, except non-white people will be leading things and wielding the Superpower. America, for all its faults, was a universal idea. It embraced the whole world, and the whole world looked to America (at one time, not today) as the world's hope. Neither Africa or Asia are universal ideas. Maybe the age of universal ideas has ended, but in that case, what do we have to look forward to? We're seeing it now in Gaza, Ukraine, Addis Ababa. It's a world of politics and armed conflict.

I am a tremendous admirer of Professor Sachs. He is excellence personified in constructive 🇨🇳 + 🇺🇸 dialogue. Not that I agree with everything he says. From what I can make out from the first few minutes (please someone correct me if I am mistaken), this talk was NOT given on 2023-10-07 during the shocking, traumatizing events in Israel, despite the upload date. It is my sense that 🇨🇳 & 🇷🇺 urgently need to condemn 🇮🇷, as the balance of the world's moral geopolitical power has now shifted markedly against the extremist regime in 🇮🇷 & its enablers. 🇷🇺 in particular needs to decouple from 🇮🇷 by condemning Hamas, condemning Iranian incitement of Hamas, ending Russian use of Iranian military technology to defend annexation claims in 🇺🇦, & pressuring 🇮🇷 to immediately renounce all of its highly enriched uranium under rigorous IAEA monitoring. I am generally opposed to Russophobic & Sinophobic discourse in 🇺🇸 politics, but I find the apparent inability of Russia & China to straightforwardly condemn Hamas as a terrorist organization is absolutely bone-chilling. Do you side with Hamas, Iran, Russia & China, Professor Sachs, at this critical juncture in the dialogue of civilizations? Thank you.🙏

Outstanding Advice for the world as it evolves, delivered with excellent clarity.
Globally we are at crossroads, as clearly evidenced previous systems developed by 'divide and rule' powers have over decades been proven disastrous for humanity. Totally disrespective of others, it was excessively exploitative and suppressive to all, developing and small nations, it's inhumane to perhaps 50% of global populations, and now still totally disregards their own citizens and allies.
There sadly remain some corrupt and greedy in administration.
Yes respect and take good care of your neighbors and build back better Globally. BBBG.

Environmental problems (resource depletion, pollution, energy needs) can be solved technically when linked to consumption issues. Our socio-economic system is built on cooperative abuse and exploitation, primarily managed through debt, backed by propaganda and violent intervention, as deemed appropriate to maintain the status quo. Attempts at a paradigm shift towards focus on environment rather than quality of life have great commercial benefits, notably via the enforced replacement of old with new. The aim is to achieve environmentally sustainable cooperative abuse and exploitation of people, backed by the aforementioned, supported by digital control and censorship. It is a regime under which I shall not live because I will have opted out. Life for me is a chance to have enjoyable experiences and to help other people have enjoyable experiences. If it ceases to be that for me, I’m off to self-compost. In the meantime, best wishes from me.

China is the first country that managed to develop from a third world level in the 1960ies to a prosperous industrialized country in just 40 years. 3 success factors were key: Sovereignty, a homogeneous high alignment long term stable governance model, and the ability, based on the first two, to formulate and implement multi-decadal development projects in all socio-economic dimensions.
So the recipe is very simple: be sovereign in culture, politically and economically.
Size is not a success factor. Why? Because when you are small you can develop your niche Ricardo potential fully and mostly all the big countries and the empire don’t focus on you as long as you can make them belief, you are actually doing what they want you to do, without actually doing it. You fly under the radar, and your Sovereignty is your niche which the Hegemon has no time to look at.
When you are a larger country of course you are noticed and if you sit on interesting Ricardo potential the Hegemon wants to control you as a colony.
Without Sovereignty, a country has no sovereign governance and culture and economy and cannot develop strategically as it needs to do what the Hegemon and the Empire demand and need, not what its population needs.
    So who is sovereign?
China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, Burma.
    Who is mostly sovereign?
India, Saudi Arabia ( since joining BRICS and staying neutral in the NATO Russia war), Brazil ( under Lula and Rousseff), Algeria, Vietnam, Indonesia, South Africa, and couple of others.
Who is a colony: The EU, NATO countries and many countries in Latin America and Africa and Oceania and quite a few in Asia.
An imperial business model is a pyramidal model. The Hegemon draws a 5% free rent from its colonies. But within an empire there are middlemen and they all draw their cut. The cote of the EU draws about 4% and that makes some 10% rent extraction @cross all hierarchies.
When a company has to pay 10% of its profits, it will never have any profits left to invest into its future. And more so, it cannot invest in high ROI development, as it has to invest what increases imperial profits.
It is like a specialized worker in the imperial business and cannot simply switch jobs, or work in another way or another business.
In short a colony can never develop its Ricardo potential of comparative advantage as it has to work aligned to its hegemon’s Ricardo Potential, which is very different.
This is why children move out and become fully sovereign to maximize their potential.
Being colonies of an Empire will never let a country develop or move up.
When children move out they have a small income and work their way up. Parents mostly give little help and expect little financial return.
Colonies always are heavily indebted to the hegemon. They stay indebted.
The empire exerts control via its credits and thus not only sovereignty is lost but corruption is brought in.
Because if you want to thrive you need to work for the empire and its entities not for your country and its interests and potential.
Indebted countries are corrupt countries as they need to bend to their creditors, whose interests are never aligned with the debtor country. The local country establishment will always seek profits from the hegemonial relationship not from their own national development. Development, if it happens, is extremely slow and inefficient and thus yields very low profit if at all.
Working for the empire yields much higher profits faster.
So the corruption is the willful, knowing misalignment of the activities of the establishment, away from their country’s interest towards the hegemon/empires interest.
A sovereign long term stable governance system brings needed stability, development consistency and ensures its country’s interest are always first, thus enables an effective alignment of interests and potentials when it comes to international trade and cooperation in general.

To put it in perspective the china initiative is no more than a global Ponzi scheme.
It’s not going to work for everyone in the long haul. China population is growing old rapidly. The new generation is not ready to create a family. China thinks that adding cardboard in with the concrete helps them stretch out their raw materials thus meeting its resourcefulness to their population and to you and me. It doesn’t matter what they do-it’s all junk.

"China is the first country that managed to develop from a third world level in the 1960ies to a prosperous industrialized country in just 40 years." NOT TRUE: South Korea, Singapore, Japan, Republic of China (Taiwan) , Malaysia are all examples of countries in Asia that did the same at far lower human and freedom costs.

I disagree with your suggestion or conclusion. Africa doesn’t need to be in debt traps by EU and the west. What African are asking is not finance or help from the west. Africans are asking no interference in their internal affairs and destabilizing African continent.
EU should totally write off any kind of debt against Africa for the centuries of colonization and exploitation of African resources till today.
Africa can manage both education and development on its own as it see fits the persistence of the west insisting to bre the helping hand and investor is ridiculous. What ever Africa is saying falling in deaf ears.
I’ll repeat again and again even recently the west African leaders keep saying to France we want you just to take your military and leave Africa but what did France keep insisting we want to help Africa? Why when Africa keeps telling you I don’t need your help but you don’t want to pay to African critical minerals you keep saying Africa is poor with all do respect prof. Jeffery I disagree with your statement but of course you want to infantilize Africa as if you are the savior.
It’s just sad you mention bill gates he’s the last person African needs.
Please, respect African demand for peace and to respect its sovereignty
    May god help Africa

      Ever hear this story:
While out to sea, a large boat became shipwrecked and there was only a single survivor. This man prayed and asked God to save his life. Soon thereafter, another boat came by and offered the man some help.
“No thanks,” he said. “I'm waiting for God to save me.”
The men on the boat shrugged their shoulders and continued. As the man became more deeply concerned, another boat came by. Again, the people aboard offered this man some help, and again he politely decline. “I'm waiting for God to save me,” he said again.
After some time, the man began to lose his faith, and soon after that he died. Upon reaching Heaven, he had a chance to speak with God briefly.
“Why did you let me die? Why didn't you answer my prayers?”
“Dummy, I sent you two boats!”
The Universe is always watching out for the best interests of our spiritual evolution, even when we are too narrowly focused to see all the other opportunities it presents us. Sometimes, all that is needed is a change of perspective.
fyi, from 1949-present China had taking a helping hand time to time to what China is today, if not like you suggest for Africa to do today, China would still be another India today. Why re-make the wheel when one offer to show you.

China could have had a better democracy but chose to keep a iron curtain around them instead because they knew better. How is that working out?
I personally have had to buy two new items from China, because I knew that from my experience that the first item would breakdown after only a few usage and then use parts however for the second item when it came time for it to be fixed! This is a very minuscule problem with china 🇨🇳 industry. If China is doing what they are doing to me what are they doing to their own people!

How can an impoverished nation have economic freedom when the West kept the African nations impoverished with debt traps!? US and Japan are the biggest debt trap with 80% of the debt trap in Africa. China provides infrastructures for Africa, this gave them economic freedom. By golly, there's your saying - economic freedom! It seems China is doing the right thing as you said. Whereas, US and the West had been preventing Africa from having economic freedom. Just look at what have US and the West have done for Africa (not to mention the other regions of the world) in the last 100 years? Nada.... the US and the West purposely kept them impoverished with debt traps!!

I'm so disappointed! I was hoping Dr Sachs would talk about the environmental devastation caused by neverending global wars, particularly with the USA's latest proxy war (Nordstream II, the Kharkov Dam, cluster munitions and depleted uranium shells, which all just add to the genocide that has been ongoing in the Eastern States since 2014...). It's truly amazing how rapidly you can develop your economy with citizen slave labour under a human-hating communist regime... Dr Sachs please ask China and India why they're polluting at a higher rate than they were 10 years ago? Humans don't want SDG, ESG or any of the other cultural-marxist ideologies being imposed by global elitists - noone wants UN/WEF/WHO/IMF dictating life... Climate change is definitely 'man-made' (those weather modification patents go back for decades...)

In case you dunno, 92% of ALL greenhouse gas came from global north even in 2022 accumulated from over 200 years according lancet research. Type Global North Is Responsible for 92% of Excess Emissions on goggle.
CHINA has had rapid economic growth and increased pollution but they still produce far less greenhouse gas per person than folks in the west.
China invested hundreds of billions in green energy, more than US and Europe combined, with 26 nuclear plants being built, and solar panels prices have plummeted due to China massive production so all countries could use solar energy cheaply.
tesla produces half of EVs in China and many car manufacturers facing cheap Chinese EVs have to transition to manufacture CHEAPER EVs.
when China is leading the way and providing the means for everyone to transition to a greener economy to reduce carbon emissions, would you still think China is at fault? Why not invest as much as China on green energy? without Chinese growing its economy, would there be hundreds of billions of investment?
