@@kpewliu4348 The wrong with Hobbes’ (and Mearsheimer’s) theory is that their assumption of human nature is very partial. According to Biology or Anthropology, Human nature is largely cooperative, or we can’t live together in the first place.
However, many scholars of political science advocate the assumption that human is by nature brutal. That could justify the wicked history of the invasion of America. Besides, war is beneficial to the American military-industrial complex. Therefore, such an assumption is useful to make scholars popular.

The USA was born out of violence, grew out of violence, thrives out of violence. There's no single generation that did not fight it's own war since the foundation of the USA. The war is in every American DNA. And the war is made more palatable to them because all of them are fought outside their borders, the distractions, deaths and misery is always born by "others". Currently the Ukrainians are paying very dearly, and the next in line are the Taiwanese. And, for sure, some people's bank accounts are seedling, the arms dealers are laughing to the bank.

I am very much in agreement with Jeffrey Sach. Notwithstaning conflict which arising mainly from the USA, I am still of the view that China would not resort to war to resolve bilateral problems unless initiated and started by the USA. China obviously would not allow itself to be a push over unlike Japan and some of the European countries. China seeks to rise peacefully. But the USA would not allow it to be so. John Meisheimer is still a zero sum gain advocate.

  • @eddyg4742
    @eddyg4742 Рік тому +14

The root of the problem lies in USA's monetary and economic system.
The USA is a deficit country. The size of the "real economy" is small, the GDP calcs grossly over estimate the economy by including financial services, law services etc which do not necessarily generate real economic value for the society.
For this system to work, the USD has to dominate, ie to be the main trade and reserve currency, allowing a deficit economy to be sustainable. This means USA has a major advantage in importing goods and services, acquire and own foreign assets, attract and funnel global talents to sustain their tech domination, despite "printing" massive amounts of USD. Other countries doing the same at this scale would have had unbearable inflation.
For the USD to dominate, the military has to dominate. The tech has to dominate.
For the military and tech to dominate, the media influence has to dominate: using their media influence to split societies elsewhere so they can divide and control politics and resources, and when that's not enough, they use the media influence to support their military involvements for the same objectives.
China despite not having the objective to dominate and replace USA, will eventually effectively do that, simply because of their sheer size.
Their political system gives them the ability to sustain the growth effectively despite being that massive, by
    1. More effectively govern and implement policies and long term growth plans without being affected by short term benefits for winning election votes etc.
    2. shielding themselves from foreign intervention / media influence which aims to divide and control them.
So from the perspective of morality, fairness, and legitimacy, the USA shouldn't be trying to suppress China.
But by the logic of how their current monetary and economic system has been designed to operate, the only way to sustain that is to continue the domination.
They have seen what happened to the Great Britain when the sun set on them. They don't want the same to happen to the USA.
Unfortunately, whilst they have the upper hand in monetary, military, tech, and media dominance, they do not have the upper hand in the political system. So time is not on their side.
It is either they adjust, cooperate, and eventually lose some (if you want to use the term lose), or they eventually lose in a massive massive way having made china an enemy on the way there.

Kudos to you for stating clearly the conflict of interests that has doomed this great power politics. The only point I think you miss is that even if China was willing to slow down her economy to follow US lead I don’t think her current model is sustainable for more than 1-2 decades longer because of the exponential growth in debt in US economy.

    • @eddyg4742
      @eddyg4742 Рік тому

@@skydragon23101979 the USA debt is only a problem if they do not dominate in tech and military.
USA has the luxury of owing in USD. So strictly speaking, they are not debts as such.
In their desired world, they could print a trillion dollars to "repay a debt" just with a snap of fingers and have no consequences.
The debt problem only becomes a problem when they cannot single handedly dominate in tech, finance, and military, and media narratives.
If they could, then China and other developing countries would continue to produce only low to medium end goods and services, buy USA bonds, and import expensive services, technologies and machineries from the USA , helping to support the USD printing,
USA could continue to control or buy up assets and resources all around the world using their military and financial tools.
They could wreck havoc elsewhere and attract talents from all over the world.
In this scenario, all is well and everything would be tickadeeboo. The American dreams could live on.
Now the debts are slowly becoming real debts, ie debts that cannot be easily resolved by printing money and not have runaway inflation.
Why? Because the USA is slowly losing the dominance to China in those critical fields.
This my friend, trembles the core of the American interest.
And so, the American dreams are inching away by the day, slowly but surely becoming what the name itself suggests, that is, just dreams.

China's one child policy of 40 years ago has led to the most spectacular decline in working population numbers, this means fewer consumers to push cash around the economy. A housing bubble that affects huge numbers of the population just burst, as did the stock market and foreign investment into China. Xi is not told the truth by fearful subordinates which clouds his decision making ability. China will undergo a complete political/social/economic overhaul before 2030. This will be inflationary for the whole world, and also lead to high growth for the USA as domestic producers pick up the shortfall in Chinese imports. The challenges of immigration will soar for the USA as no other country has a viable reserve currency other than the US dollar. Because of which, the Fed Bank can create much more money than any other country.

This official said the Chinese economy had grown by USD13 Trillion & the US economy by USD11 Trillion. BUT, he added, China has had no control over how that additional US wealth was distributed within the US itself. In other words, China is not responsible for the grotesque & unsustainable (& growing) level of economic inequality within the US!

On Wikipedia China has one official language 中文 Chinese, Taiwan however has two: official language Chinese; national language Mandarin. Understandably, in the US high school classes and scholastic tests are Mandarin but university classes are Chinese. However in the entirety of China including Hong Kong, Macau and overseas Chinese communities like Singapore, students are studying one Chinese language 中文. For convenience of distinction from dialects within China in schools and in media, spoken Chinese is referred to as普通话 Putonghua. That apart both written and spoken Chinese are called Chinese. Foreigners need not be confused with Putonghua or Mandarin, the Chinese language is Chinese.

The late social critic Ivan Illich based his critique of modernity largely on the fact that "homo economicus" is a modern invention. That is to say, man is not economic by nature.
Economics is a mode of perceiving the world, basically seeing the world in terms of doing more with less. Thinking economically carries certain assumptions such as "growth" and "development." Economics is a massive project of social engineering.
Globalization was an attempt to forge a global economic society. Needless to say, mankind is hopelessly divided into races, nations, families, cultures, sub-societies, etc. for such a messianic ambition to be realized, except for a vanguard elite. In the case of globalization, that vanguard was bankers who are truly a globally integrated society.
But growth and development are inherently limited by mankind's social fragmentation. One society's growth and development inevitably butts up against another society's growth and development, and one or the other has to be subordinated and integrated. That's what happened with Japan, which was the first Asian society to undertake the massive social project of homo economicus.
Japan lost to the United States and had to subordinate itself, but not in a zero-sum way. Japan became part of the capitalist condominium known as "the West" after 1945. And once Japan started to outgrow its subordination by the 1980s, suddenly it became a threat. The same has happened with China, but China is neither ready nor willing to subordinate itself to American growth and development.
China does not aspire to either globalization or global hegemony. It wants to manage a multipolar world where subordination is strictly regional. But the capitalist condominium of "the West" is still rooted in the imperial growth and development of classical homo economicus from the long nineteenth century. The West after 1945 (including Japan) transformed imperialism into globalism, and transformed "homo economicus" into the supranational "human rights" citizen who belongs to the Western/UN order, even if they don't know it yet. That's why the US goes around to world to Ukraine, Taiwan, etc., to defend homo economicus as an ideal identity that transcends politics. For the US, inside every person on the planet is an economic man, a homo economicus, waiting to come out.

That’s just another way of presenting Thucydides Trap or Tragedy of Great Power Politics based on false rhetorics to fool people that human nature is evil. Mearsheimer even go to the extent to admit the US is evil therefore China must be too. Well, China, Russia and much of the rest of the world don’t buy these ridiculous claims. They all believe man can be good and can live in peace. Proofs are everywhere. To name some: 151 countries have signed up for Belt and Road; 2023 BRI Summit in Beijing had 10,000 participants from 150 countries and 30 international organisations including the UN; Africa, Latin America, Central Asia, Middle East, Russia all join BRICS, Shanghai Cooperation and other associations to confront US hegemony. Multipolar world is the same as “We don’t want to be dominated, bullied and bombed.” The China International Import Exhibition last month had 3400+ exhibitors from 100+ countries with the biggest Pavilion being the US. At its peak before Covid the population of US expats and students in China were about 250,000. All UA-cam uploaders of foreign nationality in China praise China without exception. And China isn’t the country with shootings, racism, opioids, fentanyl, inflation, strikes, 1 trillion credit card loans, 2 trillion student loans, selling houses to pay for medical bills, living paycheck to check, evictions, homeless, hunger, armed robberies, falling bridges, broken railways, war and mentally ill veterans. The fact is we have some very bad guys on this planet and we need to cure this problem. At the minimum, the bad guys are in the way of the rest to try to save the planet from global warming.

You misunderstand China. China has the same essence just expressed differently. China is expressing it as one civilization and China has 5000 years of managing different ideas thoughts etc. That is through tighter and tighter cooperation and unity to resolve problems. That is why you have the belt and road to create closer and faster connections between the world making the world smaller and smaller through connections and communication.

@@skydragon23101979 I agree that China's ambition is not zero-sum. Just like the West with Japan, China wants to integrate rather than dominate. But integration also assumes subordination. This is even true domestically in China. The communist system in China is decentralized to a large extent, Beijing allows each region to figure out what works. But the regions (and the private sector) are still always subordinate to the CCP in Beijing. When the private sector (e.g. Jack Ma and the tech sector) started getting too independent, China cracked down.

@@jason8434Yup you are right, integration also assumes subordination. But for asian values unity and stability is more important than liberty and subordination also depends on subordination to what in China’s case it’s subordination to UN rules and her affiliated organizations.
Regarding private capitalists, in China the famous quote by spider-man is useful to remember with great power comes great responsibility if the capitalists is in pursuit of more and more wealth that is unsustainable to China’s economy you will be cracked down if your pursuit of more and more wealth brings with it a sustainable economy and benefits the majority of the citizens then yes you can continue on your path.

Very good. I'm no history scholar or qualified to know absolute but in my humble opinion, didn't John Locke debate Gottfried Leibniz and didn't "the pursuit of happiness" that won over Locke's life, liberty and "property"? I think Locke regarded slaves as property. Also, what about Hamilton? Didn't the US grow industrially because of national banking and only a handful of presidents have used it. (Thankfully, China has copied Hamiltonian style national and state banks). I hope you can expand on this in a future opportunity. Thank you so much.

China has the same view, so what is the difference? Do you want to live in Chinas domain or the US domain. Hegemony is Chinas political aspiration. US Hegemony is the US political aspiration. I choose US. It is a free country in the US . If you choose China then move there is my opinion. If you support and believed in Chinas way of life then move there and enjoy . If you enjoy the US way of life then move there . It will play out in the end. Right or wrong.

"Now, seven months later, Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, tells "CBS News Sunday Morning" the balloon wasn't spying. "The intelligence community, their assessment - and it's a high-confidence assessment - [is] that there was no intelligence collection by that balloon," he said.
But the rest of the world of course wouldn't notice this clarification seven months later, when the idea of the "China Spy balloon" has already been deeply ingrained in the minds of the masses, courtesy of the mainstream Western media cranking up the headlines based on an allegation. So bravo, continual demonization of China has been accomplished. Meanwhile, Julian Assaange languishes in prison for his Wikileaks. I wonder if this is what Christianity calls morals and ethics and fairness,

There is much to credit in what Sachs says, but in the end, he’s Incredibly naive and deluded because of his single-minded reliance on economics, and that, a somewhat narrow application of economics. I listened to him speak at USC, I believe in 1991, as he was in the initial stages of advising Russia on market development. How did that turn out? He is comparing apples to orangutans, comparing U.S.-Japan ECONOMIC competition in the 1980s, where Japan had and has a largely similar political-economic system to the United States, to U.S.-China SECURITY competition today where China operates as an authoritarian quasi national socialist state using slave labor that has amassed enormous capital to develop a premier military by being allowed to compete in international trade as though it’s a market economy. PRC is using this military to threaten its neighbors and attempt to dominate the West Pacific and Asia. It MAY be the case that we ought to learn to accept that and not fight it. We could save a lot of money, at least in the near term, but the cost-benefit analysis on that balance sheet is about a whole lot more than economics and trade, history, geopolitics, and a number of other disciplines need to be considered.

It's very clear that if Russia hadn't invaded Ukraine, and China hadn't expressed express desire to "unify" with Taiwan, there wouldn't be a 2nd cold war between two poles. Protective industrial policy is great. Hot war and cold war are damaging. For that to stop, Russia has to leave Ukraine alone. China has to guarantee a peaceful (unoccupied) Taiwan. Until these guarantees are made, we'll have the 2nd cold war. Jeffrey Sachs is well spoken. But he's extremely wrong.
