I am a former hairstylist. I use to do jherri curls back in the 80s and 90s. This was the hairstyle to have especially if you wanted your hair to grow long. It's a tedious and very long process but was worth it IF you wanted a carefree hairstyle.
I would first apply a curl rearranger . There were different strengths (mild, super and extra coarse). After determing the right strength (strand test) for the client's hair then I'd proceed with applying the rearranger to the hair. If you had virgin hair I'd apply 1/4 to 1/2 inch away from the scalp then pull to the mid shafts and the ends when smoothing the hair, otherwise if retouching I'd apply only at the roots and then apply a moisturizing conditioner to the previously relaxed hair. This would process under a hooded dryer with a plastic cap for up to 20 minutes or if using the super or coarse rearrangers much less time or you'll over-process your client's hair. Once the hair is to your desired straightness, you then rinse it out with warm water. Rinse the hair until you don't see anymore of the rearranger. Water MUST be clear. Towel dry the clients hair to damp then choose your desired perm rods; apply the curl booster ( curling creme or solution) to the hair. Comb it through the hair and begin rolling the hair with end papers. Once the hair is wrapped on the perm rods, apply more of the curl booster (curling solution) to the top and bottom of each perm rod. Always place a cotton strip around the hairline. Place a plastic cap on the head and sit your client under a warm hooded dryer. Process for the required amount of time, usually up to 30 minutes. Always do a curl check in the crown or the nape of the neck/ head after 10 minutes. If a strong"S pattern" is formed you can rinse the hair with warm water. It needs to be rinsed out completely, no bubbles...period! Towel dry the rods once it's rinsed properly. Place more cotton around the hairline. Give your client a towel because it will keep the neutralizer from getting into the eyes, ears, down the back, etc. Apply neutralizer to the top and bottom of each perm rod. Let the neutralizer sit on the hair for 10 minutes, then check the curl pattern. It should be that strong "S pattern". If that's established then you remove the cotton from the hairline and rinse AND rinse with cool water until the water runs clear. Lastly, towel blot each perm rod then start dropping or unrolling the rods. Generally , start at the back/nape area and work your way to the top of the head. Rinse one last time with cool water. This just ensures that all of the neutralizer is completely out. Next towel dry the client's hair trying not to disturb the curl pattern. You can use a hair pick or wide-toothed comb to style the hair. Apply some kind of moisturizing activator/ creme then style as desired. Don't shampoo your hair for at least 48 hours. This just makes sure the curl pattern is set. Ladies and gentlemen that is your jherri curl. It's very time consuming but the results are Absoultely beautiful. Your hair will grow like crazy, IF you shampoo and condition it as needed. Have a very blessed day!!

I think some people are confusing wet with moist. When you first get a curly perm, the rods are taken out, the hair is rinsed. Back when I had it, the hair was then shaped to a style, then moisturizer was put on it. The style wasn’t its best at that point but you had a style, not wet hair hanging like in this video.

I am a former hairstylist. I use to do these jherri curls back in the 80s and 90s. I can't believe they're back in style. After I would relax the hair with the curl rearranger, I then would towel dry the hair to the damp state then apply the curl booster (curl solution) to the hair then I'd start rolling the hair with end papers and the desired perm rods. Process it for up to 30 minutes under a hooded dryer with plastic cap. After 10 minutes under the dryer, I'd pull my client out from the dryer and do a test curl. It should show a strong "S pattern". If the curl pattern is formed then I'd rinse the curl booster from the hair until the warm water runs clear...no bubbles period. This is crucial , otherwise you will over- process your clients hair...ending up with straight ends. Then lastly I would towel dry each individual perm rods then place cotton around the hairline . Next step is to apply the neutralizer to each individual perm rod. Let this set for around 10 minutes. Check curl pattern generally from the crown or nape area, if "S pattern" is set then I'd rinse it with cool water for about 5 to 10 minutes. This neutralizer MUST be rinsed out completely or you'll end up severely damaging your client's hair. Towel dry the rods after rinsing the neutralizer out. Now you start unrolling or dropping your perm rods (it works best if you start at the nape of the head. This keeps the hair out of the clients face while wet. Towel dry it or blot dry the hair at this point, don't brush the hair ..finger comb it or use a pick or wide-toothed comb. Apply the curl activator and smoothing creams and style however you wish. Don't shampoo your hair for 48 hours. This gives the hair a chance to set in its natural form. Ladies and gentlemen that is your jherri curl. Good Luck! It's a very time consuming process. Your hair will grow like crazy.

Your hair is probably severely over-processed from overlapping the chemicals. The best thing to do is to start over by cutting off all of the hair that's straight, usually on the mid-shaft and the ends. Generally when this has to happen then you try and wait for a few months so that you'll have a decent amount of hair growth to work with, at least 2 to 3 inches or more. I hope this helps. I'm a former hairstylist. I've done a trillion of these styles back in the 80s and 90s. Good Luck! You have a very blessed day!
