    Thanks so much Pete!!! With taking the old one out, watching your video and putting the new one it, this took about an hour. Probably 20 minutes for someone who’s done it before. But I was being careful.

    Thanks for the video, it will save a lot of people a lot of money… companies that come out to your house and sell softener systems are notoriously shady. This seems like a viable option for homeowners with decent DIY skills.

    I had never installed a whole water filtration system, but as an Engineer I installed it, for the entire household good to for another 9 years. However, now I have never installed a water softener before, so this was great help. I have bought the same unit and am going to tap like you did into the supply line coming out of my filtration with the UV light... should be good to go in terms of what I need to go through..I had no idea about adding salt and bleach..
    I would NEVER trust those pesky water tester strips.. thealnever give you the right readings, I know it because I test my fish tank water quality and even after a complete change, it showed the same results as before the change and after adding all sorts of additives to it.
    Like you, I know my water is hard, probably not too much, but I get minerals build up in the fish tank and shower heads.. anyways, that's my story and future project. amf.

    Thanks for the video. Im looking to have mine installed in the garage, but I don't have a floor drain. I was thinking to either run the discharge up to the attic, and then over to the laundry box, or to poke it outside the garage and then bury it to the road. Any suggestions?

      It has to drain in a drain or the last tank in an aerobic septic system. It's very high in salt so it will kill all the grass and destroy the concrete if you drain it by the house.

    I sample water from wells for a living and 1) the strips could be bad but 2) let your well run for a bit. Those minerals could have fallen out of suspension. You won’t get an accurate reading unless you purge the well

    • @karlshuh6612
      @karlshuh6612 Місяць тому

      If it is hooked up to the main water inlet, then yes. You will waste softened water to water your lawn unless you put the valve in bypass mode first.

    Hi Pete, great video. I see that you put 3 gallons of water and then the bag of salt, then pulled the lever to put it in service mode. How do you when to stop and put it back into normal drain mode?
    Also, any way i can get in touch with you to show you photos and best possible location to set up the softner?

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  Рік тому +1

      The water softener needs to be in service mode all the time to get softened water. Bypass mode will bypass the water softener and not soften the water.
      My email is on my About UA-cam page but the best place to put the water softener is where your water first comes into your house and near a drain for the discharge tube to go.

    Thank you for this guide! God bless you brother.. I really appreciate it. As a new home-owner I want to install one myself, save money and feel accomplished as a Do It Yourself’er 😅 question.. the main water line is inside a very tight and small closet so I can’t put a softener tank in that closet.. can I hook up the softener with the washer (and dryer) hookup? Does it matter where you hook up the softener?

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  Місяць тому

      @@uscrivera Thank you, the water softener has to be before it feeds to the rest of the house. You could use PEX tubing and connect it to the closet pipe then to feed the water softener near the closet then back to the pipe in the closet to feed the rest of the house.

    Pete, Why softener goes after filtration? I would put softener first and then filtration.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  Рік тому +1

      Our filter is also an iron and manganese filter. If I were to put the softener before this filter, it would overwhelm the water softener with iron and manganese.

    • @genevelis6075
      @genevelis6075 Рік тому

      @@petebeasttexashomesteading Thank you. What brand and model of water filter do you have?
      I think softener is more generic and water filter is bare a heavier load and more multifunctional to filter everything, including minerals.
      I could be wrong.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  Рік тому +1

      @@genevelis6075 Our water filter is from www.cleanwaterstore.com/iron-and-manganese-filters-for-well-water.html they have manual and automatic backwashing filters of different sizes. Water filters filter out impurities in the water except minerals. Water softeners are not filters but have these small beads that pull minerals out of the water and have to be cleaned or backwashed every so often.

    The backwash drain is that connected to a P trap drain which allows an air gap, or can you connect it directly to the main house 4" drain by drilling a hole into the top of the PVC pipe??????

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  3 місяці тому +1

    • @RobertBallMagician
      @RobertBallMagician 3 місяці тому

      @petebeasttexashomesteading Believe it or not the plumber did this because the 2" P trap kept getting clogged and every time it did a cleaning cycle the water spilled on the floor. Here is my current problem the tank that holds the salt is dirty and the cold water smells. Rheem told me to use bleach and run a cycle. Take out the salt crystals and replace with salt pellets. I showed them pics of the hookup and made no mention of this. If you want me to send pics to you give me your email and l will, thanks.

    • @slicktmi

      That's because it doesn't create soap scum on your skin when you rinse that's what gives that grippy skin feeling

    • @laney4816
      @laney4816 3 місяці тому +3

      That’s why it’s better because you use less product and save money in the long run. The soft feeling leaves the skin moisturized instead of stripping your skin and hair.

    Just got the same model Rheem today. I don't have a drain option anywhere near my water heater. The condensate drain from the A/C (which is in the same room as the softener) runs from the small collection tank, up into the ceiling, all the way across the basement and then into the floor drain in the laundry room.
    I'm trying to find out how often the softener recharges and what quantity of brine is discharged during the recharge cycle in order to determine what size container I'll need to have it purge into and how often I'll need to empty it until I can find a better option........but having no luck.

    We had one installed when we first moved in with a new water heater. The water was hard and we could see it in the bathtubs and sinks. Our plumber is very hard to get a hold of, and could never get him to come back. We also had them put in new toilets. They were nasty. A few times the water softener doesn't run and then the water gets hard again. So had another plumber come to fix it. Sometimes I have to set it to recharge myself. With only 2 people in the house it doesn't use much salt. Ours is a North Star.
