I am 71 years old and I have a stroke four years ago. You have told me what to do. I have done it myself and you are GREAT! You are correct and right on. Thank you!
After reviewing more than 20 videos, i found this video to be the most detailed and informative. The information and instructions provided turn a rather daunting task in to a simple straightforward one. Thank you for making it .
Thank you so much! Your indepth break down of how to install this water softener gave me the courage to give it a try. BTW total success and no leaks. Take care.
Great video. Helpful easy to follow instructions that took away some of the "mystery". My exact unit as in the video finally failed after 15 years and I replaced it with the same model, but the plumbing connections did not line up. This video made it easy to do as I also used the Shark Bite supply lines and generous lube. Thanks much!
Great instructional video. I have two questions. How do u know which cooper pipe goes to the in on the unit and which goes to the out. Also there's no drain, but the previous unit had a small line going outside. Thx.
Great video! Question: on mine, the black rubber hose that's leaving the water softener started spraying water everywhere so I'm guessing it disconnected from the drain hole between the two wall spigots behind my washing machine?
Whirlpool WHES40 Water Softener: Yea so I'm going continue the saga right here for some to see. I purchased some silicone lubricant, (plumbers grease), pulled the bypass assembly out, cleaned the ends and inside, re-lubricated the o-rings as expected on this brand new Whirlpool Water Softener. Still leaked. Swapped the o-rings left to right and re-lubed again. Still leaked same side. Called customer service and a nice guy named Daniel said that he would send out a new bypass assembly with the necessary clips and o-rings included. He said that some of the specs were a little bit off sometimes on these bypass assemblies. So now we're down to making "lemonade", it seems, out of "lemons". Now IF the specs are right on the bypass replacement but somehow not on the receiving end......you know where this will go!
Great Video, just installed mine. Unfortunately, it didn't go as smoothly because my house has 3/4" PVC (white) and Sharkbite doesn't fit that. My solution was to get fittings to convert PVC to CPVC and a piece of 3/4" CPVC pipe. Should have ordered in advance of the project but I did find a plumbing supply shop that had something in stock. The alternative would be a 1" PVC female threaded / slip adapter, a reducer 1" - 3/4" and then pipes, elbows, etc to finish the connection. The latter would have been a lot cheaper and less trouble that messing with the Sharkbite and the converter to CPVC in my opinion. If any readers have plastic pipe, double check if it is PVC. 3/4" PVC is a little over 1" OD, CPVC is 3/4".
Great point. I’ve installed 100 softeners but never had to deal with CPVC, Kytech, or galvanized pipe. Under these circumstances it would be best to call a professional. If you have Wirsbo, Pex or copper pipe, this video is for YOU!
I feel as if I am doing something wrong. My salt level has never gone down and my water is still hard after 5 months. I follow all the instructions or at least I think I did. Any help would be appreciated.
Nice video thanks. 1 question- Brinewell,i poured the solution,it cane right out into the main tank where we put salt. If i see,the brienwell is not sealed from the bottom, and it cant hold the solution i put in. Pls advise.
you did quite well but you need a cameraman if you're going to do this for about an hour it's worth having a friend come over hold the camera and you slowly describe what you're doing so that your audience can see every step without being dizzy watching the one-handed plumber as you were in the video!
What would your advice be to someone wanting to put in a softener where there was no existing one? Just got a house on a well and the water smells awful!
The process is a bit more complicated as it involves more fittings and material knowledge but if you're ambitious you could try it. I would install the softener close to the main water valve and the process would be similar but you would instead cut in a TEE FITTING close to your main water line and have one end of that TEE going into the INLET side of the softener but the other end of the Tee should branch off to serve your outdoor hose bibs and drinking water. The water serving your lawn and drinking water should not be ran through the softener. The OUTLET will just use an ELBOW FITTING to connect to the rest of the home BUT your TEE may have a far way to go IF there isn't already a TEE in place serving your hose bibs and drinking water. IF THERE IS, JUST INSTALL THE SOFTENER AS SHOWN IN THE VIDEO!
Super helpful video! What was the reasoning to add the 5 litres of water in the beginning? I just put in salt (3 bags) and started it, is this incorrect?
In the instructions it says to leave drainage pipes 1 1/2 inch off the ground from the pipe to keep from sewage and bacteria from crawling up the tube, how is yours going through ? Ours sprays so hard and fast there’s water slashing
My copper water pipes are 1/2” and the sharkbite hoses come in either 1/2”x3/4” size or 3/4”x1”. If I get the 1/2”x3/4” hose I’ll need to find a threaded adapter 3/4”M x 1”F that will connect the sharkbite hose to softener’s bypass. And turns out such an adapter isn’t easy to find in Canada.
If connecting the sharkbite fitting to copper pipe, you can leave it in or take the plastic piece out, both ways work. BUT if you are connecting to PEX or CPVC pipe the white plastic piece MUST remain in to provide rigidity to the sharkbite fitting so it meets the pipe straight on to help ensure no leaks. Net, for copper pipe, you can leave it in or take it out, most installers leave it in from what I have seen.
Watching you trying to remove just those simple plastic inserts in the metal-clad flex lines was laughable. Gee, dude, ever hear of needle- nose pliers? I stopped the video at that point and left.
I bet when he is your age he will grab the needle nose. Everyone has to learn. I havent installed one of thes in many years , that is why I was looking for this video.

Thanks bro, this video was really helpful. Much love
I only have the hot water and cold water pipe coming from wall to water heater. Do I connect it to those two pipes?

Watching this in 2024 before purchasing a Whirlpool WHES40 and this is still the best video I found about installing it.
I just installed this water softener myself, and your video was a lifesaver. Thank you so much!!! I truly could not have done it without you!
I installed as per this video. It was very well detailed and step by step process explained very good. Thanks for making video

Great video what's the hose size for the emergency drain valve?
Great instructional video. I have two questions. How do u know which cooper pipe goes to the in on the unit and which goes to the out. Also there's no drain, but the previous unit had a small line going outside. Thx.
When you say test your water hardness in the upper level bathroom faucet - are you testing the hardness of hot water or cold water?
Great video! Question: on mine, the black rubber hose that's leaving the water softener started spraying water everywhere so I'm guessing it disconnected from the drain hole between the two wall spigots behind my washing machine?
thank you for your video
Amazing video, helped me a lot. saved me a lot of money.

do you tapoff water heater cold side tee off to the water softener?
Very Nice Softener you got there
Great video. Is there a step to disinfect with bleach first?
Thanks. I forgot to record that but you're right. The instruction manual should specify how much to add.
@@dj2cozy655 No worries. You just saved me tons of time and money. We'll be installing the 40K version. Thanks again.

also use rust remover salt and an inline filter before your softener would be a good idea
@@dj2cozy655 thank you!
Why the water going thru the softener can’t be used as a drinking water, it still smells, hot water smells a lot more. I have my own well.
Note: it’s very hard to find a 1/2 inch shark bit hose . I had to get a shark bite that went from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch to install this product
Very informative thanks
no problem
Super helpful video! What was the reasoning to add the 5 litres of water in the beginning? I just put in salt (3 bags) and started it, is this incorrect?
I also did the same thing, did you ever run into any problems? just watching some videos now to see if I messed up
Nice vid brother🤟
Thank you
In the instructions it says to leave drainage pipes 1 1/2 inch off the ground from the pipe to keep from sewage and bacteria from crawling up the tube, how is yours going through ? Ours sprays so hard and fast there’s water slashing
I always put the hose inside the drain pipe 2-3 inches... works for me.
I only have hot water and cold water pipe coming out of wall to water heater. Do I connect it to that ?
Connect on the cold side before your water heater so your hot water is soft.
I would do a 1/2 x 3/4 coupling on your water pipes and then do 3/4 x 1 hose. You'll need a bit of 3/4 pipe, but this would be the easiest way.
What happens if I did not run a manual recharge?
Why you take out the white piece from shark bite
If connecting the sharkbite fitting to copper pipe, you can leave it in or take the plastic piece out, both ways work. BUT if you are connecting to PEX or CPVC pipe the white plastic piece MUST remain in to provide rigidity to the sharkbite fitting so it meets the pipe straight on to help ensure no leaks.

Silicone on and in drain lines ? Never .
It’s a silicone lube to help to get the fittings on all the way.
its painful to watch you use one hand to do things
Thanks for watching
It's more painful knowing he did it one handed while we're are struggling with 2 hands...
