- An old documentary film gives glimpses of China just before Mao's cultural revolution upheaval. Zhou Enlai is seen attending a banquet. But in contrast street scenes are seen showing that daily life went on as usual. There was no sound track so I improvised one.
Mr. Rogge. You know more about China and its history than most Chinese nowadays. You improvised sound track shows you understanding and knowledge of the culture, arts, and literature. Thanks so much.
China at nowadays has no history . Feels like emptiness around me always .. because of Mao they destroyed all the great of this country .
@@sundaychill6392 back to pre historic China and everywhere you see is nothing else except poverty, leaving the rich mansions of landlords
@@ranojoymazumder2857Very true, the pre cultural revolution PRC were very much better than KMT China in the 30s
Another great piece of film Michael, your sound track is well done too. I must thank you as I have really enjoyed watching your very original personal films. I love Hong Kong and would have loved to have been here at the time you were.
Always grateful for comments of subscribers to my vids !
My father favorite not one day he ever forget China when he alive he talk about zhou Enlai all the time . that time we already staying in Malaysia.
Why did you move to malaysia?
Awesome footage!! I cannot thank you enough for posting this obviously rare and priceless footage!!
0:16 Beloved Leader Zhou Enlai
Benjo D. He was a decent guy
I heard a story of a meeting between Khruschev and Enlai. The Russian leader mentioned the fact that he was born in a family of poor, illiterate peasants. Enlai is said to have replied: "That means we have something in common - we are both traitors to our class!"
Young people shown in the footage are now at their 80s and 90s. Hope they are still alive.
Someone who was about 20 at the time would be about 80 now, someone who was about 30 would be about 90 now.
Thanks for the beautiful b/w footage.
It is interesting to see Zhou Enlai in films, he was of course the man who greeted President Nixon upon his arrival in Beijing.
Michael, thank you for your sharing. God bless you. Amen
Wow! What a great movie! Thanks. As a nerd for early Chinese Communist Party history, these movies are very valuable. The Party man in the beginning with the totally white hair was State Chairman Liu Shaoqi, attacked in 1966 by Mao as the "Number 1 Person In Charge Taking the Capitalist Road" and who eventually died in prison in 69!
Keep up the good work!
He didn’t died in prison, he died in a high level hotel in Kaifeng.
Zhou Enlai was the people's champion, in darkest says he'd save who he could.
The modern techno soundtrack did not fit. It was very distracting.
不说影片画面,影片中后面很多配音完全对不上吧?1964年?影片中的后面配音说的是1966年8月18日毛主席在天安门和全国100万群众,1966年的事提前就发生了?这么正式的标题?China before the cultural revolution 1964?

Awesome awesome awesome THANKS A LOT this video means a lot to me Sir!
It is not a far stretch from our imagination of what life was like back in the day. But then of course, a) it was a period just as idealistic as the days of Cultural Revolution, b) you already can see how ideals play a role in ordinary life (“Soviet Revisionist mistakes”; “Unite! World’s suppressed proletariats!”) to an extent much larger than you’d wish for. And, c) all the footage are very urbane (probably Beijing only?) and I’d imagine life to be much harsher in rural areas.
Lol same all over the world, urbal areas all over the world at that time as always welthier without exeption
Why don't you play the original recording of the video directly? Why do you need additional dubbing? The background sound is not the same time as the video picture. This background sound is a recording of an event that happened many years later
Because there never was a sound
Amazing footage.👍
Was that Liu Shiaoqi, Zhu De and Zhou En Lai?
Yeah
平和下面全是驚濤駭浪。
Hi Michael, could you please tell me the source of this film? You shot them in 1964? or you found it in archives? Thanks. David
I think he recorded it
this video recorded in 1966, not 1964
3:19 学文化又种田,这是文化大革命的内容。
文化大革命其实就是要缩短学制,以参加劳动代替学习。

Red Salute to chairman Mao ✊
background audio is not line with video. It doesn't look original.
Anyhow, the video can reflect something happened back then enough.
who are those red guard?
the PEOPLE, not pla, not police, not CCP apparatus
it looks like typical democratic uprising after they toppled gaddafi regime
where former high ranking ofifical, governor, officer being purged, being beaten, being punished by PEOPLE.
I mean the "uprising" against Gaddafi was basically orchestrated by NATO to take him out. The Cultural Revolution was not an act of imperialism, but not really a revolt either it was just a bad policy decision with disastrous results. So yeah there is a similarity: neither of both should ever have happened.
Yeah, it was people`s uprising against revisionism and bureaucratism
( Not sure u have this word in english language.)
The soviet writer Mikhael Sholokhov said about cultural revolution while sino-soviet split:
"I do not know what is happening there ( In China ). I can told that there is a struggle with bureaucracy. Brutal, Asian "
@sukarnoyahudi We don't use reddit in Russia. It is used only by westernized teenagers.
Damn that's a lotta revisionist
0:08:15 Deng Xiaoping right portrait
It's funny that even in a random photo arrangement of Chinese Communist leaders, Deng is still on the far right.
@@FQBeast That’s not random, it’s the seven members of Politburo Standing Committee. From left to right, Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, Chen Yun, Lin Biao, Dengxiaoping.
yes interesting footage

What country flag are they holding
Ivan Nge the Chinese flag before communist rule
Syria.

It cannot be cultural revolution if this footage was taken in1964, as the cultural revolution began in1966 in historical term. But the political fanaticism, craziness, horrible ruling did not start from this point. All these human disasters can be traced back to the 50s under the communist rule. During this footage being taken, actually over tens and millions of Chinese people have been being dying of political persecutions, hunger, various tortures, shrouded in the so-called class struggles silently, all that are the outside world unaware of.
Thanks. You are right. I have changed the title !
Eric Luk it says before the cultural revolution Before
Very good point in general. It was 50 ties, Stalin in Soviet Union, that started this hell on earth..
@@miriamgonczarska613 did they take your stuff?

Dear Mr. Rogge:
What was your recollection about Chou en Lai?
audio sound effects are far too loud
sound = off
Unfortunately for the Cinese people, Zhou en lai was a snivelling lacky and never stood up to the so-called great leader!

no , this video recorded culture revolutions exactly in 1966 not before. 10:20

the newspaper...no entertainment news.
@@haihuachen2627 Not exactly...... If you watch those old 1960s Chinese films, and imagine Chairman Mao as Captain America, PLA soldiers as supermen, Shiang Kai-Shek as Thanos and KMT army as Thanos's villain army....you will find these movies are just some Chinese communist version Marvel movies. When my son was about 5 years old I let him watched a few of these films and found him giggling and exciting all the time during watching these movies like what he did when watching Marvel or Disney movies. Since he was too yang to be affected by the ideology or propaganda in these films, I assume apart from the propaganda part, these films worked just as entertainment as Marvel movies for Chinese people in 1960s.

arch Angel renegade are you kidding? Before Mao, China was in ruin and meanwhile, other empires could have seized bigger parts of it for their own monopolies. The communists expelled extreme nationalism into Taiwan, and during the great and cultural revolution, the life expectancy and living conditions of the Chinese rose. Children were taught how to do theoretical AS WELL as practical stuff from the arts and sciences, to agriculture and industry.
How, dude?
Why say that?
