    "Granma ! How are you !!" :)) Those ladies really looked like my grandmother. She used to dress exactly like that, in those kind of clothing, and had the pointed hat too. I guess it was standard then... And then the house as well. I'm so glad that such films are preserved. I was so upset when our ancestral home was torn down to be modernised in HK. It had the beautiful clay tiles I think they were. The white walls. Inside, it had beautiful wooden beams. I remembered all this. And next door, we built a concrete building next to it as well. Chipped marbles on the rendering, but solid concrete as staircases etc. Balconies etc. I miss the old wooden building more... It had great big wooden doors, and a wooden shutter as lock. I wish we knew a lot more about building preservation then. Most village houses now look like a Spanish villa. Lol... The designs are so standard. If I had the money, I would rebuild this replica of the wooden buildings...

      @davidlang1125 4 роки тому +2

      Krisy o it’s not anything like it was. You’re going to be disappointed if you want to see anything of the old city. I saw the demolition of a lot of the old quarters in 1991. China has been mindless in its drive to modernize and much of its older buildings have been lost. The most egregious example is Mao’s ordering the destruction of the encircling wall and gates of old Beijing in 1951. It was a defining structure dating back to the Ming’s. And that destruction has continued to this day with only fragments of the old hutongs left here and there that now feel more like mini Disneylands. Hutongs were oasis of calm and repose and was the essential Beijing experience. It’s like going to New York and seeing skyscrapers. Beijing today feels like any big city with tall glass buildings with multilane freeways and neon signs. Without the old hutongs it’s no longer the Beijing that was lovingly written about in the past. It’s all gone. Same with most of China including Guangzhou and other cities in the south. You’re going to think you’re in Irvine California.

      Because, only Canton, and a few other shipping ports were created... So, chinese from Canton, either went to America, like California.. or for some, even longer journeys like... Into the UK, Liverpool.... and more. Trade and shipping was very strict then, cos this is what started the Boston Tea Party as well in New York. People fighting over the goods to be delivered.... in case it gets robbed, or in case it gets destroyed etc. My granma was from New Territories in HK. But my ancestor was a little bit further up the road, in Bo'an Dong Guan. This is my understanding. Mr Sun Yat Sen was also from Canton. (I think he was an academic, and his family was also wealthy, because of being a civil servant of sorts. So he become a medical person. He treated many of the poorer farmers, labourers. This is why in Seattle, and in Vancouver areas, you will see some of his monuments, and his legacies. And why Bruce Li was famous as well. Cos he was from a mixed-race family. The family name is Li.) As to why some people left their villages... and then some non-chinese went into China.. as labourers.. This was kind of due to British's trade issues... Cos some of those people were from the British Commonwealths as well.
      Not everybody inside of China, appreciates this aspect of history. Some people would literally spit and spat at you as well. Cos those were the shipping regions, which the country traded with. Some people will call you a traitor.. and a runaway dog. Remember to stay away from such people. Cos it is very dangerous these days for you to enter China, without connection.. or family there to speak for your behalf...

      According to the literature of the time, you could get your head cut off for almost nothing, like having short hair (for women), or being in a trade union. The Kuomintang was just killing people on a broad scale who were their allies! They really did the information blackout, too. In the west, we're still repeating wartime propaganda of the Kuomintang!

      @@karlkun717 : No.... because, some people do not know that, "China", or "PRC" today, was not all a single boundary area or region either. The boundary, inside the boundary is many mini Kingdoms.. or nations... Nation of Nations. This is why, if you crossed over to someone else's land, then you would be killed. Cos Tang Code existed back then. A lot of people, do not know that, China has many regions... and people cannot just give up their land so easily.. The thing with the Westerners is that, they actually assume that the entire region, should, and ought to be the single state as well. What does that mean then ?? Erase your ancestors' history, land, and legacies ? Many chinese today, want this to be overwritten... and even if someone claims it, they refuse to accept this as well.. This is why many people rather die these days.. Cos justice no longer exists any more... KMT, was a Southern Army of sorts... Only Canton, was the shipping port, and trades... Nowhere else. Chaos, between different parties, with different interests occurred, fights started... and this is why it ended up with so many deaths... etc etc.... Even now, if you are Cantonese, and wants to "go back home", many people, will stop you. They would even verbally deny that you are so. Cos there is no justice system in place. And people tend to lie through their own teeths.. read random things online and assume it is so. Even when they have evidences etc.

      經濟上, 作爲自古海上絲綢之路的起點之一, 開阜多年, 廣州商業一直就較北方發達.
      地理上, 處於南回歸綫附近, 天氣沒有北方寒冷, 廣東一直享有魚米之鄉之名, 生活物資要比北方豐盛.
      政治上, 廣州人有兩句形容自己的政治地位, 山高皇帝遠, 上有政策, 下有對策. 雖然廣東遠離政治中心, 廣東人很難登上政治中心, 但是, 正因爲遠離政治中心, 廣州人有更多的自由空間去經營自己的灰色地帶, 更利於商業發展.
      教育上, 一來開阜早, 廣州人有更多機會接觸外國的新鮮知識經驗, 二來在政治上絕緣, 廣州人在教育上更注重實際需要, 所以少了份迂腐, 多了務實.
      雖説廣州不及上海, 那是因爲政治地位上, 和地域經濟圈上的問題, 但人文上, 北上廣深中, 歷史最悠遠的只有廣州, 比起西安這些古城, 底子上, 廣州或有不如, 但是本身廣東的住民, 就包含了五胡亂華和宋末遺民, 根正苗紅的漢族傳承, 裏子上未必輸.
