    Thank you so much for this. Same part broke on me, I had no idea to look for a screw holding the side together. That was huge.

    I just refurbished my whole vigilant stove. I wish I would have taken a video of the process of disassembly and reassembly. Very satisfying project

    I used to install and rebuild these for a dealer back in the 80's. The dealer had an Vermont Castings rebuild manual with drawings so it was pretty straight forward. I wonder if anyone has such a manual today. FYI there are different versions of the Vigilant; Vermont Castings redesigned the inside parts a few times to improve combustion efficiency.

    Nice job on the stove! I don't have this model stove but if I come across one, I will know how to get inside it and reweld that piece and get it back up and running! Good work!

    My shaker rod came undone, and I'm not sure why yet since it's full of hot coals..but I'm glad I found this video. I think my rear shaker piece is broken, or the rod just came out from it because I originally thought the rod broke, but it came out in one piece.

      True that!. I am not sure if the inner side plates are present on the wood version. Still this was a really valuable video for me. I am trying to clean out my Vigilant coal stove. Thanks MountainManTrev

    I have a 1977 vigilant and it doesn’t look anything like that on the inside… I have no fire bricks none of that grate stuff…fascinating!

    Sorry to reply so late! I don't use this account often. I never did get the damper all the way out. After removing the allen screw and handle I tried filing down the part the handle slides over. I was able to get the damper really loose and almost out with the side portions out of the stove. I think with a little more filing I could have gotten it out but it wouldn't have left much for the handle to slide over after reassembly...

      There is a bracket held in with a bolt at the top right of the fireback, take that bracket out and the damper comes right out.

    Great video.
    I need to replace the "fire back"on mine. Do you think that will come out without tearing the whole stove apart? The fire back is the part that the bottom of the damper hits.

      I don't think I got that far into mine. I'm not sure.

    ON the left side of the stove, near the back, there's a screw with a spring under it and a small cover. The manual says this is the "air control" but the only place the manual mentions it is in the parts list. Anybody know what it is for? Also, the thermostat flap on mine doesn't completely close, even if I disconnect the chain it hangs slightly open, is this normal?

    • @MountainManTrev
      @MountainManTrev  7 років тому

      The air control works kind of like the choke on an old carbureted car. You open the air control to allow for extra air flow when starting your fire. After you have a fire going you can close the air control. You can turn the screw in and out to change the pressure on the spring, it's what holds the air control cover/flap open.
      As for your thermostat flap, I'm pretty sure I remember mine closing all the way, but I haven't used the stove for a while. Maybe you have something bent?

    • @BarwickGreen
      @BarwickGreen 7 років тому

      Thanks, that all makes sense. It won't budge anyway - but I don't need it, fire starts and runs well enough. But still really good to know what it is meant to be fore thank you.
