  • Quick video to show how to reset the hydraulic cam chain tensioner. Your going to need to do this if you remove it for shim adjustment.

      If it’s always rattling when you start the bike up it’s a sign that it’s not holding the oil in it when the bike stops. Triumph did used to say that it can rattle for 10 seconds before they would say it’s faulty

    thank you for all your Tiger 800 videos. Much appreciated! I have a question about this one. The only way I can get it to stay locked down is to use some small pliers to pull the top clip slightly forward and out so that the back of the clip catches and holds in the top grove of the center piston. Is this normal? Do you think by doing this it will still pop into the normal position with a few turns of the engine with the ratchet?

      It should do. You will know if it pops out onto the chain guide when you turn it over

    First of all thanks for the great video.
    I have got two questions... what happens ,if the tensioner reaches the last click and you do not reset it?
    How ofter you should reset this component?

      You only have to reset it when you take it when adjusting the valve clearances so you can get it back in the engine. Resetting it does nothing apart from keeping it held together for assembly. If yours is at the last click when it’s in the engine then the cam chain is probably stretched too much.

      MuddySump Thank you for the response. I was asking because my Tiger every now and then (let's say 3 times a month) makes this loud metal noise from the distribution chain, same noise you can ear some times at start up which usually goes away in seconds.... in my case it stays... Only turning off the engin and re-starting makes it go away (some times I need to do it more than one time)... I was trying to figure out how the tensioner works as I am convinced that this malfunctioning is caused by that part, but I am not really sure why is doing it...

    Can this be replaced without removing the valve cover? I just did the 24k valve clearance inspection on my 2016 800xc and they were all in spec, but I'm getting occasional cam chain rattle on startup, usually when it's hot and has sat a few minutes. Currently at 28,500 miles. The rattle lasts 5-7 seconds when it does happen.

      You can take it out but you’ll need to take the crank cover off so you can keep tension on the chain until you put the new one in and turn the engine over to release the clip.

      ​@@MuddySump thanks, I figure I'll replace it since it's about $120, cheap insurance. If that doesn't fix it perhaps the chain has stretched?

      @@svtcobra66 more than likely the tensioner. They’re supposed to hold the oil in but don’t always do rattles till it builds up the oil pressure again

    Do these hydraulic tensioners go bad? My 2010 Street Triple 675 has 60,000 miles and rattles every startup and while riding. Im going to replace the cam chain during valve clearance service and i'm not sure if I should replace or reuse the tensioner.

      Yes. They can stop holding the oil causing it to rattle on startup till it gets the oil pressure back in it.

    Hello, I have a 2012 tiger 800, it has 75,000 km, the problem is that after driving it for a while and when it is hot and the engine turns off and on again the timing chain sounds and the sound doesn't go away until I start the engine running and revs over 6000 rpm.
    What do you recommmend me to do?

      Replace the cam chain tensioner. Is not holding oil in it.

    Pal I have a 1200 triumph tiger 1200 gen 1 it's just starting to rattle on the tennair side will I need to reset it or is this something else.
    I am in the North East 5 minutes from Newcastle 🤔 cheers

      The reset is just what you have to do to put the tensioner back in after it’s been apart to adjust valve clearances. It keeps the spring compressed until you turn the engine over

    Hoping you might be able to help me with a related issue... I have a 2016 Tiger 800 and sometimes on hot start ups theres a horrible rattle from the cam chain area for 3-5 seconds.
    Will resetting the tensioner fix this? Some suggest that it may be that the plastic chain guides have failed?
    Really appreciate any guidance 👍👍

      The reset is just what you need to do to build the engine back up.
      The do sometimes get the fault with the tensioner not holding the oil so needs to refill when you start the engine.
      If you do take it out to have a look there is two little holes on the part that pushes out. I always make sure they’re at the sides now and not too and bottom. Don’t know if it makes a difference , not even sure if they go all the way through

    In my tiger 800 cc from 2014, the litrle lines don't have number 8 at side

      They changed on late 2014 models to the slotted cams so you can do the cam timing adjustment. There is still a little groove on the actual shaft for the timing mark. It’s probably got a paint dot on it

      Do the ratchet tensioners fit? Take the crank cover off so you can keep tension on the chain while you remove the hydraulic one and replace with the other one.

    hi!i have triuph daytona 675 that have the same tensioner and give clicking noise so i bought a new one to replace but i cant find anything about it what to look for how to remove and replace it!if u could help me i would be very happy!thx mike

      Your gonna need to take the cam cover and crank cover off to check the timing marks. Follow the end of my video for valve adjustment from the tensioner part

    I have a 2011 Daytona 675R with 8500 miles and it makes quite a loud ticking noise that's slowly been getting louder which I think is coming from this area, are these hydraulic tensioners prone to fail or do they get noisy before there's enough slack on the chain for the tensioner to move to its next position? The valves were checked early at 7000 miles. Any insight is much appreciated, thanks.

      Is it the last of the old shape or start of the new? Does it have the hydraulic tensioner fitted? The bikes are tickety, some worse than others. I’ve changed parts on them before and they’ve still been the same.

      @@MuddySump thanks for getting back to me, it's the last of the under tail exhaust, has the black hydraulic tensioner. It rides really well, has a oil change every year regardless of mileage but has definitely got noisier, just wondering if it's a trait of the tensioner before it adjusts further or if they are known to fail? Thanks.

      @@henryosborne4694 I went to 2 different garages, both Triumph dealers and they told me exactly the same as Muddy Sump.
      Some tick and some don't, mine never caused me any issues for as long as I owned the bike. Apparently mine was a quiet one!

      @@Shrekeo my 2014 d675 rattles for 2 seconds on a cold start after a week then it's quiet. Is it fine according to the dealers? I can't really show them the issue as it's quite random

    Question about the install, do u need to wrench the engine 3x counter and 1 time forward for the tensioner to regain some leverage? Or can u just reinstall and start the engine without doing anything

      Turn it over by hand first so the clip releases the plunger to put tension on the cam chain. Then turn it over to check the timing is still right.

      Rich 675 there’s enough tension there to stop the timing jumping but when the engine runs it get the oil in the tensioner too

    Hi mate i have a 2009 Street triple 2009 it makes a rattle for about 1 minute on start up abit6 like a paint rattle can then when warm it stops is that the cct

      Yes. They’re hydraulic and sometimes don’t hold the oil in so need to build up the pressure in it again. 1 minute is fine. Triumph used to say 5 minutes before it was faulty then changed it to 10

      Yes. You won’t be able to screw it in without doing it cause the plunger won’t go back

      They sometimes don’t hold the oil in when the bikes off and might rattle at start up until it builds pressure again.

      I think you are refering to the sound made by 3 cylinders in flat and configuatiom firing at 120 degrees apart

    I reset my timing tensioner on my trident 660 and now the bike pulls very slow.. no pick up. Any advice?

      What did you do to the engine? It only has to be reset so you can put it back in the bike after adjusting valve clearances.

      ​@@MuddySump the slacking noise from the engine seemed louder so i thought it would be the timing chain and checked the tensioner . But now after putting it back. Bike exhaust sound very low on idle and loss of power and torque.

      @@lalchhanhima1 if you just took the tensioner out without something to hold the cam chain tight behind the crank cover then the timing will have jumped.

      @@MuddySump Opened the cam cover. Timing was off by a tooth. Now its normal again. Thanks 👍. But the engine is still making clicking sound like before. Do you know what could be the reason
