The reason Tim burton pops to mind is that Coraline was Directed and Produced by Henry Selick and so was Nightmare Before Christmas. Most people assume Burton directed Nightmare, but he actually only wrote it.

Tim Burton also only really outlined the story for Nightmare before Christmas, Caroline Thompson wrote the screenplay.

Who told you Tim didn’t animate nightmare before Christmas? He did, he was working on both nightmare before Christmas and corpse bride at the exact same time. He wasn’t the only one because it was a team of people but he did animate nonetheless. As for coraline, people assume coraline was made by him because it has his same aesthetic, dull in the boring world and colorful in the not so real and happier world.

@@mayaenglish5424 Tim Burton was barely involved?????... he animated the movie and produced it and gave the basic story line. No he did not direct the movie but directors are not the creators of movies of projects all the time, the idea came from Tim but his only roles where to animate and produce it which is a huge contribution and a huge involvement, your resource is not reliable and is based on an opinion of what goes into making a movie not on facts of what goes into making a movie. Directing is but a fraction of what makes up a movie, Tim Burton is definitely given too much credit because he had a whole crew working on the movie which automatically makes it not just his movie alone but it was his idea and his animation and outline of the story he started the whole project he was the first idea without his idea there would be no project. The story was more developed and improved thanks to Caroline Thompson because that's what screen players do that's their job and she's given even less credit. The director was Henry Selick, Screenplay was Caroline Thompson and producer and animator was Tim Burton all critical roles yet only fractions that go into making a movie. It is definitely true that Tim should not take all the credit but to say that he was barley involved is simply just ill informed.

@@ArwenRO24 Sure I could have been slightly less hyperbolic about it but he was busy making other movies like Batman and stuff and let everyone get on with making Nightmare pretty much without him. They ran stuff by him and made sure he was cool with it obviously, he was a producer, but other than the initial idea with the rewritten Christmas poem and a couple of the initial designs and maybe a few cowrites on some songs stuff what actual labor over the 3 and a bit years of painstaking stop motion did he actually do? Yes his initial idea was obviously a good one and very valuable and he deserves credit for that. But I just don't think having his name tacked on the front of it is fair to the people who actually did 95% of the work that's all.
I don't know what you mean when you say Tim was the animator because it's stop motion animation so?
It probably wasn't intentional on his part to screw over Henry Selick, it was probably a very smart marketing move to get more people to watch the movie, but it still means that most people think that Tim Burton directed the movie and did a whole lot of work he didn't do.
You're right that second hand sources mean nothing though, here's Henry Selick talking about directing The Nightmare before Christmas who basically says everything I said but much nicer and more diplomatically and with more compliments about Tim's influence protecting them from the studio, etc. www.thedailybeast.com/henry-selick-on-directing-the-nightmare-before-christmas?ref=scroll

@@ArwenRO24 How could he have animated it, he was on set for 8 days? He conceptualized it, sure, but he didn’t animate or write it. He didn’t even think up Sally! He wrote a poem and then gave people money to make it a movie. He was too busy with Batman at the time to be involved in a stop motion movie, especially if this magnitude. In fact, the only major thing he did in production was stop Caroline Thompson, the movie’s writer, from making Oogie Boogie less racist.

The parents portrayal has always been really interesting to me. We get in this movie the feeling that they are super neglectful, but I don't actually think they are. the Problem is that we see the story through Carolines Teenage eyes. But there are envitonmental hints that something is going on behind the scenes that Coraline either doesn't know or only vaguely understands:
    1. The moms Brace. It seems like she recently had a decently major accident, and going by American insurances... that'll mean debt.
    2. They just moved seemingly pretty apribtly, Maybe they could not afford the place they were living at before. While the house they live in now is big, it is also pretty old and isolated, so it may actually be fairly cheap.
    3. We see that Coraline actually cares for her parents deeply and that she does rely on them when things are getting hairy. This implies that she has had the experience of her Parents being there for her if need be.
    4. The mom sais something about a Catalogue deadline, implying that this stressed out air right now is a temporary thing because it is crunchtime before this needs to get to a publisher at a certain date.
All in all, I think this paints a picture of Parents who aren't terrible, but are right now financially struggeling and under physical and emotional stress because if they already have financial problems, they need to get this catalogue in before deadline or their srewed, which does affect of course their daughter too. This may also explain why Coralines Mom refused the Gloves. She got them for Coraline after the Catalogue had gone to the publisher, probably in the knowledge that they are now a bit more financially stable, so that she could give Coraline something a bit more expensive.

Same, about the parents. For me they were regular, normal parents.
Kids movies and shows usually portrayed parents as super happy and childish, and playing all the time with their kids, and that's just not how it is. It's unrealistic.
Parents are adults who deal with issues too, can't be smily all the time, and make mistakes as they're learning how to do good parenting.
Coraline's parents seem more real to me, and I like their characters for that reason 👌💜

Coraline is very bratty at times, and no one should expect any parent to spend 24/7 with their kids. But I'm sure it's a fantasy of many kids that they will... hence the "Other Mother", who has all the time in the world for Coraline, but it's way too much and becomes creepy.

Funny enough I watched this when I was Coraline’s actual age. My parents were exactly like Coraline’s, they always ignored me and I felt neglected and was always suppose to find something to entertain myself especially since I am an only child. My parents would always take me to the movie theaters in the weekends when I was little like a routine we use to do but when I was a preteen they would refuse to go and rarely take me. I really wanted to see Coraline because I loved the animation and how cool It looked. So when my parents found out I did principal honor roll they took me out of school early and surprised me by taking me to go see the movie. It was super surreal watching it because at the time I actually had short hair like Coraline, I wore hair clips in my hair, I was wearing a stripe shirt the same color and yellow shoes, painted blue nails and I also have freckles like her. My dad even pointed it out and said oh wow she looks exactly like you lmao my mom even laughed on how her parents treated her and acknowledged that me and Coraline were the same because they neglect me like her 😂 After the movie when we went out a lot of people approached us and were telling us how much I looked like her. Anyway it’s a movie I super treasure even though it was hella creepy but actually having my parents see it with me really made me happy that they were putting an effort to hang out with me. After we ate dinner and drove home both my parents hugged me and apologized and said if I ever felt like how Coraline did that they were sorry and wanted me to know they loved me and cared for me even if they didn’t show it and because they knew I was feeling sad at the time they thought taking me to see the movie I wanted was the least they could especially since I was such a good kid. 💖Now that I’m 25 I still think that Coraline holds up and is a really good movie anyone should at least watch once 🤗✨

The entire story in Coraline is that she is handed two worlds. One is her DREAM WORLD. Everything's perfect. The neighbors, her parents etc. they even get her name right which in the real world they don't.
This world the other mother makes is suppose to be perfect until she gets what she wants.
As a kid, this movie creeped a lot of people out. I read the book in 6th grade it was one of my favorites.I remember going to the theater to see it and people behind me going "good trip but creepy."
The scene where she in her parents room is heartbreaking. How she makes her parents out of pillows realizing she had it pretty good.
I honestly love this film. I watched it so often as a kid.
It's a preteen movie I feel like. I watched it at age like 8 or 9. Then watched it every weekend since and once a year since I grown older.
There's a lot of hidden messages in this movie outside of the creep factor.
When you kept saying it's not creepy I kept saying "just wait"😂😂
Have y'all seen Alice in wonderland live action? It's Tim burton and I absolutely love it and him.

      late comment:
the current best theory (see 'the theorizer' user's videos on utube) is that the cat shares two souls, one being the great grandfather of Wybie, trying to rescue the ghost children and help Caroline and Wybie) "reincarnated" as the cat, and the other is the alien usurper that possesses the cat, switching back and forth between the two souls in which has current control of the cat
the entire area with the pink house, is actually an alien organism, which is eating souls (as both, the doorway tunnel and well, is its throat/esophagus into its stomach, laughs), by having and using the poor "other mother (beldam)" to help lure in its meals/victims, giving the alien even more power, to extend/expand itself upon the world, and the alien "soul" possessing the cat, is also apart of this alien organism, they're one and the same, this is how the cat can go in and out of the "dream world" and the real world at will
the other mother ("beldam") is actually trying to also work against the alien organism, but she is in a losing situation, as she'll get consumed by the alien organism, being its prisoner as well, but she has a deal with the alien organism to lure in children, but she tries to take their souls as much as possible instead, so that she can get enough power to escape herself and to stop the alien organism from becoming even more and more powerful too, trying to save the world from it, but it's a losing battle for her... but she tries to do what she can to oppose it...
the other mother ("beldam") is/was just the old woman seamstress that had lived here, she was the first victim of the alien organism, but she really does care about the children, and is trying to help them as best as she can, and to fight against the alien organism, as she can, but its a losing battle for her, and her time is nearly up (and is up at the end of the movie, with Caroline trapped, and eventually going to take her place as the new "other mother" luring in kids for the alien organism)
Caroline, was going to be the old mother's ("beldam") replacement, as she's nearly at her end, and is too defiant too...
ultimately, Caroline, actually doesn't escape, she's still actually trapped inside the alien organism, being consumed by it, and will eventually be turned into being the new "other mother" ("beldam") to continue to lure in more children...

"I have to go back. They are my parents."
"Challenge her, then. She may not play fair, but she won't refuse. She's got a THING for games."
    The perfect Halloween classic.
Fun Fact: The character Wybie Lovat is not in Neil Gaiman's novel. He was created so Coraline would not have to talk to herself and so she would have a friend her own age.
Historical Fact: Mr. Bobinsky is wearing the Russian Hero Medal for Service at the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster on April 26, 1986. Which reads on the front "Participant In The Clean-up Campaign" The "4A3C" is a "Chernobilskaya Nuclear Power Plant" indication. This medal is unique as it is the only medal in the world awarded for participation in a nuclear clean up. That might explain his skin complexion and odd behavior.
Mythology Fact: The Other Mother's name "Beldam" is an archaic word meaning: a malicious and ugly woman, especially an old one; a witch. It was once traditional on Halloween night for kids to dare each other to knock on the neighborhood Beldam's door (an elderly woman living near them). In many stories, a Beldam closely resembles a spider and lures children into her home with candy and treats, only to trap them inside a cobweb and liquefy their innards with venom. In other variations, the Beldam just traps kids in her home and eats them.

If you've ever watched sandman up to the dream of a thousand cats episode, and if you know that the author of the sandman is also the very same who wrote Coraline, there's a theory there about how the cat here is actually Dream of the Endless- something I think about a lot

Most people suppose that this is made by Tim Burton, when in fact I can personally tell it’s not. And I just confirm that it’s not. People need to realize that creepiness does not equal Tim Burton. Tim Burton has his own individual style with characters etc. and I can tell that these characters look nothing like Tim Burton. Just cause it’s a bit creepy doesn’t mean that it’s Tim Burton
Also I’m surprised that you would want to stay in the other world rather than the real world before the other mother turned into her natural form. Literally should be beating you that’s exactly what she’s doing it’s literally the story of Hansel and Gretel

I have this theory that Coraline never really escaped. Ever since she left for the third time, she never came out, and what we think is the real world at the end is just another level of the Other World.
It would explain a lot of plot holes, and why the Beldam seems to let Coraline escape so easily. I think the Cat is also likely possessed by the Beldam and serves as a false sense of trust for Coraline.

I'ts not made by Tim Burton, but it _is_ made by Tom Selik, who did Nightmare before Christmas. And yes, I know, the Title sais "Tim Burtons The Nightmare before Christmas" But Burton wasn't actually involved in the productio much. He created many of the Characters, but it was selick who brought them to life, because Burton was too busy with batman.
Also this is based on a book by neil gaiman, who is hands down one of the best Authors out there, his books aren't exclusively horror, but they always tend to have a dark comedy vibe. Better know works of his are "American Gods", "Good Omens" (in collab with the amazing Terry Pratchet) and the "Sandman" Comics all of which have gotten the serial treatment by now, and they all tend to be fairly good adaptations.

    late comment:
the current best theory (see 'the theorizer' user's videos on utube) is that the cat shares two souls, one being the great grandfather of Wybie, trying to rescue the ghost children and help Caroline and Wybie, "reincarnated" as the cat, and the other soul is the alien usurper that possesses the cat, switching back and forth between the two souls in which has current control of the cat
the entire area with the pink house, is actually an alien organism, which is eating souls (as both, the doorway tunnel and well, is its throat/esophagus into its stomach, laughs), by having and using the poor "other mother (beldam)" to help lure in its meals/victims, giving the alien even more power, to extend/expand itself upon the world, and the alien "soul" possessing the cat, is also apart of this alien organism, they're one and the same, this is how the cat can go in and out of the "dream world" and the real world at will
the other mother ("beldam") is actually trying to also work against the alien organism, but she is in a losing situation, as she'll get consumed by the alien organism, being its prisoner as well, but she has a deal with the alien organism to lure in children, but she tries to take their souls as much as possible instead, so that she can get enough power to escape herself and to stop the alien organism from becoming even more and more powerful too, trying to save the world from it, but it's a losing battle for her... but she tries to do what she can to oppose it...
the other mother ("beldam") is/was just the old woman seamstress that had lived here, she was the first victim of the alien organism, but she really does care about the children, and is trying to help them as best as she can, and to fight against the alien organism, as she can, but its a losing battle for her, and her time is nearly up (and is up at the end of the movie, with Caroline trapped, and eventually going to take her place as the new "other mother" luring in kids for the alien organism)

I had been forewarned about the creepier parts of the movie so they didn't scare me as much as they might have, but watching Ms. Spider-thing attach yarn hair to the doll's head just by lightly pressing it with NO evidence of glue or stitching to hold it in place was irritating. I think more trust should be placed in children to understand what they are being shown but don’t think that means rating should be engorged. The Parent should be able to observe their child when they are being presented with different materials and understand their reactions and modify their intake of media not from the reaction from the reaction to that type of media. That’s why my little brother isn’t allowed to violent video games anymore because he couldn’t separate fantasy from reality in that aspect of media but he has watched a things outside of his age range and could separate those things from Reality. I think cuddling a child in the way of stopping them from watching things that don’t affect their emotional state and behaviour take something away from their development.

From just watching the movie I don’t get that vibe at all. They were performers and worked together when they were young, and were also friends. Many elderly people tend to live together for companionship if they didn’t have families of their own. I know lots of elderly people who do this. They can’t handle being alone so they get a roommate. It doesn’t mean they are a romantic couple.
