Neil Gaiman's Coraline almost wasn't published. His editor called it too scary for kids, but the editor's daughter liked it. It turns out she WAS scared but wanted to know what happens in the story. Good scary stories are healthy.

I read it when I was 9yo. It terrified me in the best way possible. Now horror is my favourite genre and Gaiman is still to this day one of my favourite authors.
@@blancaherreroespana5035 He frustrates me as he's never topped Sandman which was his 1st published work. He could have run with that for years, but killed it off to write stuff not quite so good.

This movie made me realize that Terri Hatcher is a very underrated actor; her performance as Mother/Other Mother is so good, the desperation in her voice when she’s pounding on the door saying “don’t leave I’ll die without you” makes that scene even more terrifying
So true. I remember when I heard she was cast, I thought what? Teri Hatcher; where did THAT come from? Then I saw the movie. She’s SO good.
It's interesting that you should mention cosmic horror; there's a line in the book that didn't make it into the movie: "She knew that if she fell in that corridor she might never get up again. Whatever that corridor was was older by far than the other mother. It was deep, and slow, and it knew that she was there."
It’s so so creepy and unnerving. The books are so cool.
Realizing that the other mother was not what was causing the tunnel to breath is a great bit of cosmic horror.

This is done by a studio called Laika. Everything they do is pretty great visually. This is probably my favorite thing they made, but Kubo and the Two Strings would probably be what I would check out next since you dug this so much. Paranorman is a good one to go with from them for Halloween though.
Side note: They save everything. They even have a UA-cam channel where they deep dive into the choices made behind each prop down to the costume design. It would spoil some things for films you haven't seen, but it is really great insight for the ones you have.
Kubo is just incredible. A visual feast.

I still consider The Nightmare Before Christmas a Laika film. Henry Sellick and many of what would go on to form Laika don't get enough credit for their contributions to that film.
If you're looking for a videogame with this style, check out "Little Nightmares" and its sequel. Feels very much in line with this art direction. Henry Selik is even apparently making a pilot for a series based on those game.

Coraline's interactions with Wyborn initially feel to me like that NPC in a game that you run into after a few action scenes who gives you just a little more, etc. It's cleverly done.
He's meant to be awkward, as if he doesn't really get to interact with people usually...
I like that the lightning strike earlier on and the clouds at the end resemble claws. What you said about the tunnel being colorful and inviting made me think of the predatorial flora and fauna in nature that uses things like color to lure its prey; the other mother being the predator in this case
In the beginning of the book, bored Coraline watches a TV programme about protective coloration. So you might be on to something!
Okay so the book seems to heavily imply that the house is a living entity that is separate from the Other Mother. They seem to have a symbiotic relationship.

Aye I miss this movie so much, it is a timeless classic that is just perfect, they nailed the storytelling and the atmosphere

The doll at the beginning is the doll that the grandmother's sister had before she was taken by the Beldam ("...she spied our lives, through the little doll's eyes"). Notice the cornrows? The Beldam was 'recycling' in the opening sequence to make the doll look like Coraline instead.
I attended an animation panel on how this movie was made and there are so many things they did purely in stop motion that made me go "Why would you make it so hard on yourselves???"
The rain on the window for instance is actually animated hot glue which they would drip into specific shapes and then animate through stop motion. It's insane.
The Nightmare Before Christmas vibes you were talking about is exactly right. Welcome to the world of Henry Selick, the only filmmaker working in animation that (consistently) does horror! Perfect timing too because his new film since Coraline, Wendell & Wild, a collaboration with Key & Peele (who co-wrote the film), comes out in a couple weeks and looks fantastic!!
When I was in Year 6, my teacher read this to the class. I will always remember when she wrote the parent's message when they were in the snowglobe onto the whiteboard. Since then, I have always adored Neil Gaiman and his wonderfully twisted and human work. He is a genius. He and Terry Pratchett worked together on the Good Omens book and it was one of Terry's final wishes for Neil to turn Good Omens into a show before he passed - and it's a wonderful show.
I will never get over how amazing the door coming closer is. Literally sent chills up my spine.
Laika Studios is the real deal! Love everything they do, but Kubo and the Two Strings is just on another level of awesome! Should have won Best Animated Feature that year. James would totally appreciate Kubo. Very technical and the story is so so good!
Wasn't the director of that one a lead animator on Coraline?
@@cleverusername8319 Yes, Travis Knight has worked on all of the Laika films as an animator until he produced and directed Kubo.
I’ve watched this movie with my two daughters ever since it came out. It’s now one of their most favorite childhood movies. It’s a work of genius.
Actually I think the closest thing to a "game" in the style of animation similar to Coraline's I can think of is Little Nightmares. Horror game and the protagonist even wears a yellow rain coat too lmao
Little Nightmares is the game I couldn’t think of during my watch and I was SO MAD. Thank you.

Ever heard of Coraline the VideoGame, for the PlayStation2?
I got a chance to see some of the sets/figures at the Portland Art Museum. The garden set was huge and the amount of details and time that goes into these films are extraordinary.
I recommend checking out the behind the scenes on this film.

I was going to say the same thing. I saw the exhibit at the Portland Art Museum and living in Hillsboro, where the Laika film company is located, I was able to tour the facility while they were working on Box Trolls. A lot of sets and artifacts were on display throughout the offices and soundstages.
Omg, this really makes me wanna see you do a reaction to the movie ‘9’. It’s an animated film from 2009, I think Tim burton helped produce it, but it’s super underrated from what I’ve experienced (just from talking to people lol) if you haven’t seen it you should seriously check it out!!!

I watched it during a Train ride and man was it wacky. It was a good watch though.
This movie is actually stop motion, it really shows you how much work they put into it.
Regarding the sets, my family and I visited a museum in Portland, Oregon a few years ago where they had a whole bunch of sets and props from Laika's movies on display. Coraline was heavily represented.
This used to be my daughter's favourite film at around 7 years old, after Nightmare Before Christmas which she started to watch at 3. Now Halloween is her favourite season and she's really into something she calls weirdcore 😅
I just saw this movie again recently in theaters. They showed it for one day for October. I didn't get to see it in theatres when I was a kid, I only saw it on TV. I never realized before how much detail went into this movie, it's quite fascinating. The visuals, and the sounds really came together to make this movie more than just any movie. It created a masterpiece 😎
Motion controlled cameras are amazing for stop motion animators! Definitely recommend you look them up since its cool seeing them snap a pic and move the slightest bit to eventually make the full camera move that the animators have to program in beforehand. Laika still has all there puppets and sets and they still use them today for fun on their socials!
Also, they allow the camera to get a lot closer to the puppets, because it can remember where it was and move out of the way between frames for the animators to work, then move back into position to snap the next frame.
I love the stuff they post on instagram with the puppets!!!!! Glad they still have all of them ❤
I remember hearing or seeing some behind-the-scenes stuff about Coraline, in particular the pains they took with her clothing. They found someone who specializes in tiny knits and had her actually knitting her sweater in many versions. And something about animating her hair that I don’t remember too much about. Love the reaction, as always. Peace from Ohio …
Part of the Tim Burton vibe comes from the director being Henry Selick, who directed Nightmare Before Christmas (ironically on of Tim Burton's most famous movies even though he didn't direct it)
The book Neil Gaiman did for this was amazing and would recommend reading it but overall this movie is amazing and I really enjoyed your reaction to it

An interesting detail about Bobinsky is that the medal he wears is one that was given to people who helped with the cleanup at Chornobyl.
I took my kids to see this when it was released, and it did scare them a bit. Maybe it’s more accurate to say it creeped them out, but they still liked it. Initially they said they wouldn’t want it on home video, but Coraline came out when it still took many months to get a movie released on video. By the time it was released on video they wouldn’t stop asking me to buy it for them, and they must have watched it 20 times by the time they grew up. And they still love it. As do I.

I saw this in theaters for my 10th birthday and seeing it in 3D makes it so much better!
To me the story is a perfect interpretation of "The Spider's parlor and the fly", also about how predators usually go after insecure and vulnerable children.
I bought Coraline in 3D when it first came out, it's the go to movie for my nieces and nephews when they come over. I've watched it a countless amount of times and it never gets old. 9 is another one that they love watching also
The book was actually more disturbing in my opinion. The tunnel was alive and changes length to keep whatever crawled inside stay inside. Also instead of a doll, they used singing rats that climb on each other to give information on what’s next. The movie did add Wybie to the story as a movie exclusive character though which added more tragedy when his other self’s body was left dangling.
The book was definitely more disturbing. I think they had to tone it down some for the movie so kids could watch. I’m glad they still kept that horror aspect though.
One of my favorite (stop motion) animated films! They did a limited theater rerelease in 3-D and it was freaking awesome
if you like Lika Studios stuff like this, I HIGHLY recommend "Kubo: the two strings" IMO it is their masterpiece.
i'm from the city it was based off of and i've been obsessed with this film for YEARS. it can definitely make you feel uneasy at times, but it's my comfort film. 😂🥰
The book has a lot of cosmic horror undertones tbh. They’re both super good in their own ways! I read Coraline for the first time as an adult and it creeped me out.
There actually is a video game done in this art style, it’s a point and click puzzle game called the Neverhood. It came out a long time ago but I remember growing up with it and being so fascinated and disturbed by the weird style to it. I highly recommend looking into it
I saw this in the theater for the 10th anniversary rescreening. One of if not the best I watched in the theater. What a compelling and emotional Rollercoaster!

Fun random trivia that I heard from one of the artists on this film, the medal on Mr. B's chest was modeled after the medal given to those that helped clean up the Chernobyl disaster, which could explain the blue color of his skin as a side effect from radiation exposure.
So glad you got a chance to watch this film. The film visuals are really amazing. Film is kinda underrated for some reason. Really feels like an incredibly unique film in this day and age of sequels and green screens. Bravo to the filmmakers.

I had the pleasure of seeing this in the theatre in 3D. It was the best example of how to integrate 3D elements in a seamless way I've ever seen. I usually find 3D gimmicky at best and distracting at worst, but this film used it beautifully. Every frame of this film is a work of art.

Fun fact I just learned: the medal Mr. Bobinsky wears is a Chernobyl Liquidator medal, meaning he was part of the Soviet effort to address the Chernobyl disaster.

Coraline is one of my favorite stop-motion/clay-mation movies. A lot of people who react to this movie are disturbed by it. This is a comfort movie for me, for some reason. This was such a great video to watch, thank you for reacting to it.
I find joy watching reactors as they cringe at certain parts of this movie. It's hilarious
If you listen to the Other Father’s song early in the movie, he says some things that resemble what the Other Mother is planning. Almost as though he was trying to warn Coraline without the Other Mother realizing

I remember watching this movie in theaters and man I got to say that the “Theater performance” scene cause children to be star struck and parents had to walk out with their kids. With me I just sit back and eat popcorn to admire the animation that is like Tim Burton style but with dolls instead of clay-motion

I remember getting the book from a book fair in elementary school and then seeing the movie in theaters in high school lol. Love it. The cat is my favorite of course. 🖤🐈⬛

Thanks for shouting us out....i am indeed one of the fans that simply sits back and watches James experience some of my favourite films for the first time aka smth i wish i could redo myself.Anyway glad you enjoyed Coraline,it is indeed truly captivating and def my fav of the stop motion genre
theres good theorys about this film by a youtuber called the theorizer... stuff like the black cat is actually 2 different cats and loads of other stuff like that its pretty interesting tbh
Stop motion is such a beautiful art form! I highly recommend The Corpse Bride, Chicken Run, and Wallace and Gromit.
10:07 “so she’s able to transition without going through the door” nope. She never left. Coraline remained in the second universe the entire time and her real parents never saw her again. Also the Russian neighbour is a volunteer at Chernobyl (see his medal which were given out to the hero’s who helped clean up)
This was one of favourite films for a loooong time. It’s still top 10 favourite films
Oh I absolutely love this dark film and the book is just as dark.

This came out when a lot of the kid-focused movies were doing a 3D version. I saw this in the theater 3D. Right from the beginning when she’s sewing and the needle was coming right at you…a great movie going experience
The flowers on the trees at the end are actually the popcorn from the circus :)
Such a cool film. Grew up with it and have watched it so many times. The atmosphere and score is just terrifyingly beautiful and gives off a mature but still kid like and fantastical feeling to it. Would love to adapt it into a live action film. Great channel, have been enjoying your videos. Best of luck with everything!

I saw this when it came out in 3D... it added a whole other surreal element to it. Such a cool film, love the visuals
Another great review. I have been lucky enough to see the sets. They are very small compared to the perspective that we have in the film. Items like cups and plates are tiny. The attention to detail is awe inspiring. They can easy be stored in glass cases or storage boxes. You should definitely watch the film in 3D if you get the chance. The scene of the “Other Whybe” gutted and hanging always gives me chills.
You need to watch some Aardman animation movies like Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit or Chicken Run. Both awesome, absolutely brilliant clay animation movies.

I love this movie. I've heard my friends refer to it as "Kids first horror movie" and it's no totally inaccurate.

"Kubo and the Two Strings" is my favorite modern Stop Motion style movie. It actually Won Best Movie of the Year when it came out. I remember there was to kids/animation movies in the top 10 movies of the year. This was #1 and Zootopia was #10 idk if the spelled that right lmao
the secrets in this movie are somehow even scarier, like the shape of the lightning or the shadow of the other mother on the wall, that is pretty demonic for a "kids" movie.
Nobody ever mentions the movement of the tunnel between the two worlds or the web at the climax. Those had to be animated by hand and they are so flawless you never notice them.

So here's the thing. In the acrobat scene the two actresses are quoting Shakespeare, Hamlet to be specific. But here's the thing, they're only talking about how 'what a piece of work is man'. They leave out the bit just after it, the bit that's the most important part of that speech. Here's the full thing - and when we see what else is going on here we realise it was intentional that the Other Mother made them stop after that:
"I will tell you why. So shall my anticipation prevent your discovery, and your secrecy to the King and Queen moult no feather. I have of late - but wherefore I know not - lost all my mirth, forgone all custom of exercises. And indeed it goes so heavily with my disposition that this goodly frame the earth seems to me a sterile promontory. This most excellent canopy, the air, look you, this brave o’erhanging firmament, this majestical roof fretted with golden fire - why, it appeareth nothing to me but a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours. What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason, how infinite in faculties, in form and moving how express and admirable, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like a god: the beauty of the world, the paragon of animals! And yet to me what is this quintessence of dust? Man delights not me - nor woman neither, though by your smiling you seem to say so."
In Seattle there's a pop culture museum where laika studios put scenes and models from their movies there and have the Coraline museum

I JUST noticed that somwhere at 15:12 when the piano starts, one of the dogs started howling.

I remember reading this book to my son and I fell in love with this story. Love the movie.
This movie is based on Neil Gaiman's noveletta of the same name, except Wyburn was not a character in it. Gaiman has a great imagination, and another movie based on his writing is Stardust. I think you will enjoy it, too.
Yep, Wyborn was created for the film because Coraline often talked to herself and they needed to translate that differently to the screen.
I'll admit to it. This movie scared me when I was young and still creeps me out to this day.
I wish this was still on Netflix. I recently remembered how good this film was and I've wanted to watch it again. Most other streaming services put a price on it.
Two video games that spring to mind that remind me of this animation style: Don't Starve and Pinstripe. Highly recommend the latter. The story is incredible.

15:26 Was i the only one that was freaking terrified by that when i first saw it as a kid? That was legit one of the top 5 scariest moments in this movie for me, even as a kid it was in this moment that i Really Knew Coraline fucked up by going in there.

I'd grown up watching 3d movies when they used to be the red and blue lensed cardboard glasses, and the 3d effect was always just something being thrust at the camera (if you watch them now on tv Jaws 3d or Friday the 13th 3 you can tell what was being pushed as 3d) this was the first one that was truly beautiful there were certain scenes where the action was taking place in your lap (or so it seemed) I loved this movie
