The song the other father played for Coraline was actually a giant warning ⚠️ telling Coraline this other dimension is a big trap 🪤 and a giant lie cause the other mother wanted to sow buttons in her eyes so she could eat her.
@@colegensch787 Also cool fact, the song is written and performed by John Linnell of the indi rock band "They Might Be Giants" who also did the themesong for Malcolm in the Middle along with lots of other stuff. The band was actually going to do several more songs for the movie but sadly script rewrites forced everything else to be cut before they were finished. 😕
@@Drakin292 interesting 🤔
I remember there was a big debate when Coraline came out if it (the movie and the original book) TRULY was for kids. The publisher originally rejected the idea of publishing the book, saying it was too scary for kids. According to Neil Gaiman, he read the manuscript to his daughter to test if kids could handle it or not. He and his daughter got through it with no problems so he figured it was all A-okay and the publisher went along with it. Years later, the daughter comes out admitting she was terrified the entire time but just wanted to know what would happen next lmaoooo
Also interesting is that Neil has said that he has more adults saying the book/movie scared them than kids lol. He said kids tend to tell him it was an adventure
Same here for years I told my parents I LOVED the movie but one night I had a nightmare and confessed my great fear of coraline but I loved EVERYTHING about it music animation, the voices, EXCEPT other mother turning to evil mother. It was like a morbid curiosity and then a love hate relationship then a huge fear of dolls 😅
It's scary in a good way, it was extremely thought provoking to my 9 year old self and has stuck with me all this time. It's probably the best family horror movie ever made, beating out even monster house
To be fair, if she wanted to get through it despite being scared of it, then it wasn't too scary for her lol
Coraline’s “oh god” line when she wakes up back still in the other dimension has genuinely inspired whole characters in D&D games and such. It’s such a heart stopping yet subtle fear.
It definitely does stand out! Dakota is fantastic at her line delivery.
@@LatetothePartyI love you 😘😍😽
One of my favourite movies ever!
Fun Fact:
The soundtrack of coraline has lyrics that are nonsensical to make the viewer feel more anxious and confused
Fun Fact Number 2:
Bobinsky being blue is not explained in the movie but he is seen wearing a medal throughout his scenes. This medal was given for service after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and shows Bobinsky has been subjected to radiation. Many fans think this is why he is depicted as blue and likes beets (which apparently help with radiation exposure)
We talk about the soundtrack pretty heavily! Thanks for sharing the info. Especially about Bobinsky!
@@LatetothePartyAnother fun fact: Miss Spink and Forcible are confirmed, by the author of the book, to be a couple 🙌
Gloriously gothic and creepy.
I saw this movie when i was 7 years old nothing creepie for real 😅
This explains why I like it so much
What makes it even scarier is that the tools in the beginning are not for sewing but embalming
I noticed that lol
Children's Horror is such an interesting genre. They have to hold back, but that measured hand can make it more genuinely unsettling than adult horror. Like when not showing the monster makes the monster scarier.
I totally agree. My imagination is scarier than the detail most movies or stories can come up with.
I got the book from a book fair in elementary school and then saw the movie in theaters in high school. I love the animation style so much. The cat is my favorite character of course lol. 🐈⬛
We still have memories of the books we bought from our book fairs as kids.
Same here bro the cat is the goat and has an iconic voice, I love how deep it is which is not what you would think for a cat 🤣
@@lightningmonky7674 Exactly lmao 💀 I remember that got me when I first saw it lol
Also, the actresses from the British sitcom “Absolutely Fabulous” played Miss Spink and Miss Forcible, which is great. They also both appeared in James and the Giant Peach.
Oh crap, that is the Ab Fab girls!!!
That's half correct, Jennifer Saunders _is_ one of the actresses, but the other one is actually played by her comedy partner (and Vicar of Dibley star) Dawn French rather than Joanna Lumley
Oh damn! I stand corrected.
This movie was made by Laika studios, which you'll laugh but it's a studio owned by the son of like the owner of NIKE. It barely makes any money through merch and is essentially a passion project entirely for arts sake. So he's considered the "one good nepo baby" because at least he puts all this money into artists, crew, employees and etc to create great works of art.
Wow that's awesome! Love this art form of film..such a time consuming process to make these films..but they in turn do become timeless.. 😊
You guys need to see "Paranorman" and "Kubo and the Two Strings" also. Y'all will absolutely love those.
I grew up watching this movie on repeat and it's what truly sparked my obsession with Horror/The Fall Season in general. For some reason, the shot at 35:02 is my absolute favorite out of the whole movie. The way The Beldam screams, "Don't leave me!" and "I'll die without you!" all while she's pounding on the door and the tunnel starts to retract before she makes it out. I also just love all of the theories about The Beldam, the world she created, the history of the house, and all of the "what if?" situations we never got to see. I know a lot of people want a sequel, and I would literally pass away if a sequel ever did come to exist, but I feel like the lack of information, the lack of followup, and the lack of answers make this movie's entire universe so intriguing.
if they DO make a sequel (which I really doubt) it would be nice if they made the movie about Wybie's grandma's sister instead of the events after the end of the movie
@@nemoniannn That would be so cool and I'd definitely prefer a prequel like that over a sequel any day. They could tell a similar story but leave a lot of questions unanswered so that it still remains as mysterious as it has been. People say that ambiguity is just bad writing, but I don't think that should apply to this movie. If we had the answers to everything, I don't think Coraline would be as talked about as it is to this day.
Oooh can we PLEASE do Laika films after this one! Kubo and the Two Strings has not nearly enough reactions and it's got similar elements, amazing villains and mindblowing stop motion on top of a beautiful epic story
There's plenty on the list from Laika. We'll get to them all once they win the polls.
@@LatetotheParty Awesome! Kubo needs more attention seriously, the most breathtaking movie theatee experience I've ever had especially the battle scenes
@@LatetothePartyKubo is so good. Gorgeous and very compelling. It was also released on my birthday!
Great reaction! I love this movie so much. Dakota Fanning and Teri Hatcher are so phenomenal, with their voice acting.
Such a fantastic movie, a Halloween essential for me. Definitely a gateway movie to horror for younger viewers, I love that it even has the Alien-style fakeout ending where you think things are safe and then there's one last big confrontation with the evil. Great reaction! The bonus features about how this was made are definitely worth looking into, Laika's animation is second to none. Also -- Kubo soon PLZ!!
My friend's dad worked on this film, which I thought was so darn cool when she told me lol I loved this film before I found that out though XD I love how Dakota Fanning has such a distinct voice but I frequently forget that she's the voice of Coraline because she did such an amazing job changing her voice to fit Coraline's character. 💙
Watching your videos while eating has got to be one of my favorites activities to do while chilling in my house after work
Love that! Happy we can keep you company while you veg out!
Watching the original version (after years of watching the latin spanish dub) makes me realized that the voice dub for Coraline was perfect 🎉❤
She really sounds just like Dakota but in latin spanish 🙌
It's a wonderful film, but, it's so sad. The ghost children break my heart. 💔 Paranorman pulls on my heart strings as well.
When it comes to stop motion though, Corpse Bride will always be my very favorite.
Vanessa looks so good. I love that hair and smile.
What I like about the pst is the music is a mashup of several languages into a made up language making the lyrics very ethereal sounding
Laika films are absolutely worth a deep dive, especially Kubo.
The part with the Beldam banging on the trap door was so intense, one of my favorite parts of the movie
“Yeahhh, I wanna hug-a your FACE!”
I’m watching you, plush squid toy-thing.
😂
Ah, one of my favorite movies. I own the 3D blu ray and that opening credits with the sewing needle always makes me jump even when I know it’s coming.
The director of one of my favourate movies (Secret of NIMH... very good creapy kids movie) once said something close too "You can show kids almost anything, as long as there is a happy ending". Some of the best stories follow that philosophy.
If you guys haven't seen 9, I highly recommend that movie. It's very underrated in my opinion.
Adding it to the list.
Great pick! That one is creepy 😅
Coralline is a wonderful film for Halloween and a nice interpretation of the book. My favorite stop motion film.
21:24 I just read the book and Coraline is very gentle w the toys and helps the tank toy, that accidentally gets stuck on its back, back upright. However the way the movie has Coraline treat the toys also makes sense because they are still all spies for the other mother.
I watched this with my husband in 2009. I was 35 when this debuted. We enjoy it immensely and usually watch it every year.
I loved you guys' reaction to this but the reference jokes kept me entertained, too. 😂
The Coraline song her other father played was written and performed by They Might Be Giants!
A brilliant movie and book though they are slightly different
A cute little detail i love is that neil gaiman started writing coraline for his eldest daughter Holly who loved spooky stories and finished it for his youngest daughter Maddy 😊
I can’t believe it was your guy’s first time watching Coraline and I mean this movie has been around for awhile it’s hard to believe that you guys have never seen it before
"Late to the Party". So it's not just a clever name.
@@LatetotheParty I know I’m just saying that’s all
I remember not knowing who Neil Gaiman was and loving this movie. It’s so underrated.
Can you even imagine a live action adaption
This is one of my favorite movies of all time and my only regret is that I didn’t get into it until my high school years.
My movie theater recently replayed this movie in theaters and I went to see it. Even though I saw it a million times before, I never saw it in theaters and it was time to change that
Whenever I get the opportunity to see this film on the big screen, I take advantage of it because it is so gorgeous visually. I even saw a behind the scenes video on HBO. I agree that Dakota Fanning did a great job but Teri Hatcher is fantastic as the mother and the Other Mother especially during her monstrous form. She’s quiet which makes her even more intimidating.
The animation is beautiful and manages to simultaneously create magical and scary atmospheres. So many times watching this film, I was thinking, “How did they do that?”
The soundtrack is also fantastic with it also switching between whimsical and scary.
fun fact!! if you listen to the song the dad sings, it tells you what the motive of the other mother was right then and there. “our eyes will be on coraline.” they wanted to put button eyes on here
fun fact prt 2!! the home in cursive has a o with 2 loops in it and that’s commonly used in cursive when there is deception or a lie involved
OMG THE TENACIOUS D REFERENCE btw there's a cool post credits scene
I loved Coraline when I first saw it it was so familiar and different from anything I’d seen before.
Ok here’s your deal Vanessa, if you cosplay as Miss Forcible from the other world then Rob has to be Miss Spinks with you. Jiggles and all. lol
😂
Normally, I stay away from reactions to movies which are way shorter than the runtime because most people edit out important parts of the story, but that was not noticeable in your video. You condensed it all while still having all the main plot points reacted to with your amazing banter. Great job you guys are amazing.❤❤❤❤❤
I watched it at my cousins house on CD and the movie came with 3d glasses
One of the creepiest animated kids movies ever made!
Looking at the polls and kubo and the two strings is a amazing story too! Our family loves this one! My family actually dressed as the characters for a halloween party we hosted. My daughter was Coraline ❤😊
This is one of our favorite movies to watch every Halloween season!
This movie is great to watch in Fall, on a dark and stormy night with all the lights off…and 3D glasses!! Extremely unsettling!
i love this movie!!!!! late to the party
I watched this 2 years ago wanting a cute Halloween movie and wow!!! I loved it, but it's dark. Lol
Now time to watch Coraline lore and theory videos
I actually made the house and garden from the other mother's world in the sims 4. It was for a spooky build challenge a streamer i follow was doing
I named my daughter Coraline
Really enjoy you two together reacting. Good banter.
You know what impressed me most though.
Props to your editing skills because it really felt like you captured a seamless rhythm and natural flow of the films story in a compressed package.
There were no gaping moments dead audio which was really nice.
Why other reactors think that’s ever wise to do is beyond me?
Great job man 👍
Hope you guys do movie reactions more often and regularly.
I’m going to recommend something that I think you both would really dig.
“Where the Wild Things Are” (2009)
Based on the classic children’s picturebook by Maurice Sendak.
This is a very unique and fascinating film.
Would love to see your two’s take on it.
And as far as classic stop motion films to explore
“Kubo and the Two Strings” (2016)
“Frankenweenie” (2012)
“Chicken Run” (2000)
“Fantastic Mr. Fox” (2009)
“The Little Prince” (2015)
“Mary and Max” (2009)
“Isle of Dogs” (2018)
Every one of these films is stop motion, all with a unique and distinct style.
Really means a lot. Thank you. We really do try and put in a lot of care when it comes to the editing. We like watching reaction videos too, so we try and edit in a way we ourselves would like to see it.
We will add "Where the Wild Things Are" to the list.
Thanks for the list of stop motion. We will add the ones we haven't seen yet to the list.
I agree. I felt that the story played out very well with no big gaps in the story like from other reactors. This is one my favourite animations and seen it many times since it came out.
Another stop motion you should give a watch, Kubo and the Two Strings.
The other father's song was a warning in disguise:
Making up a song about coraline
she's a PEACH-(other mother wants to eat her), she's a DOLL-(the doll other mother uses to spy on her), she's a pal of mine-(the other father saying that he's on her side), she's as cute as a BUTTON IN THE EYES-(self explanatory) of everyone who ever laid their eyes on coraline, when she comes around exploring mom and I will NEVER EVER MAKE IT BORING-(other mother's whole strategy for luring her in) OUR EYES WILL BE ON CORALINE-(once again saying other mother's end goal)
He also says the word "eyes" three times in the song the same amount of ghost eyes that other mother had hidden.
It took me quite a few years to realize that Coraline's mom wasn't wearing a collar, but rather a neck brace (they mention they had an accident involving hitting the moving truck).
That certainly doesn't help with the stress of moving.
The Other Father's Song About Coraline is sung by They Might Be Giants' John Linnell. Apparently TMBG were supposed to do the whole soundtrack instead of just that one. As much as I like their music, I think what they ended up with was better.
6:01 “what are those?”
those look like silverfish.
I love Coraline
9:43 - Claw in the lighting hinting at what is to come. Also, the father sings about buttons as Vanessa pointed out, but then he says, "our eyes will be on Coraline". Only talking about Coraline, they made 28 identical dolls and 15,000 replacement faces were created for all the characters in the film. Insane level of detail!
If in Seattle, check out: Hidden Worlds, The Films of Laika.
Laika is the stop motion production company that did Coraline. They have an exhibit. I loved seeing all the different Coraline heads. They model one for each facial expression.
36:36 You caught the Ghost reference! This is why i only like reactors that are actually adults lmao wonder did you guys also catch the They Live reference? First time watching and this was such a pleasant reaction :)
When the dad sang the song he gave her a warning he talked about deep in the song about button eyes on her at the the start of the end he has his mouth stuck shut cause he gave her to many warnings trying to help
Love this movie. Very strange and weird but awesome
Y’all should watch The Boxtrolls, what a hidden gem!! It’s another stop-motion animation, it’s a fantastic story, really fun💖
Adding it to the list.
First time watching your reaction. The mice circus scene was fresh. Just subbed fam
Love this movie.
One of my all time fav all hollows eve movies
Some theories about this film say coraline actually threw the key back into the other world. Since well and door gateway were the same portals.
Coraline lowkey scared me when I was a kid 😂
If you liked this movie, I also recommend reading the book by Neil Gaiman. And also another book of his, "The Ocean at the End of the Lane". It has a similar feel to this one but maybe a bit more grown up even though the protagonist is a kid.
If you haven’t watched them yet, continue on the Neil Gaiman road with The Sandman, Good Omens and American Gods.
Ooh I couldn’t finish watching this reaction because I watched Coraline when I was way too little at a friend’s house and I’ve been terrified of the movie ever since. I gave this a try to try to get over it but I can’t 😂😂😭😭
People who say “Coraline 2 now” please take in consideration that it takes SO much work and labor.
Wow one of my favorite movies ❤️
Have you already watched 9 (nine)?? It is a 2009 animated movie with voices by Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, Christopher Plummer and others. It's very good, in that same "gothic/dark" animation style (a bit depressing/disturbing even). If you haven't seen it, watch it and react here.
We haven't. It's on the list.
The fact I watched this movie when I was 5 is a bit concerning now I am watching it back hahaha
Me and my cousin were just talking about this movie he said gives him the Creeps me on the other hand love everything Tim Burton mainly because of the Scarey/creepiness
The book is Even MORE
There is a theory that Coraline had never escaped from the Other World. That's because, at first that squid like toy in her room, in the real world it has a squid-like head like triangle shape. When Caroline first went to the other world that toy had cat - like ears instaid of that squid-like head. When Caroline "returns home" and her parents are with snow on them - They go all together to her room happy and smiled, and her dad is laying on her bed with that toy on his face, and it has the cat ears! 2nd your will tell me, what about their eyes! Well, when Coraline went back to the Other World, the Beldam shaped into her mother, and if you noticed her eyes was normal! And after see took her normal slenderman-like form her eyes were buttons again! So, that theory says that see never escaped and the Other Mother fooled her! That theory seems so creepy and dark to me tbh!! I had chills when I first heard it!
great show has come up to hulu or disny that is moving I'd like to feel the emotions I felt with you guys
I really want those dolls of her and her parents
It's definitely worth watching this again, the entire film is loaded with key bits of foreshadowing. The Other Father's song is a particularly good example, just take a gander at these choice lyrics:
_Making up a song about Coraline_
_She's a peach, she's a doll, she's a pal of mine_
_She's as cute as a button in the eyes of everyone who ever laid their eyes on Coraline_
_When she comes around exploring_
_Mom and I will never make it boring_
_Our eyes will be on Coraline_
You'll want to watch Paranorman (Another Lika movie) before it gets to be too late for Halloween.
I wouldn't be able to live there after dealing with the Other Mother. That locked door staring me in the face and me not knowing what was going on. It's too tempting.
I remember Roger Ebert gave this movie a B-. He also said Coraline was not a very nice little girl. He felt she was unpleasant and made friends reluctantly. This is one of my favorite movies. I feel an 11 girl was depicted very realistically. Kids are a bit mouthy at this age. As far as making friends reluctantly, the adults can't even get her name right. Also, Wybie caught her name, but wanted to tease her by pretending he didn't. Wybie has a good heart, but one must admit he is a bit much, and would be an acquired taste for even the most patient kid. If I ever met Dakota Fanning, I would ask if she could still do the Coraline laugh. I know I'd die laughing if she did this in person.
That fucking team work
This movie made me sew buttons into my teddy bears eyes
I love Coraline movie
I watched this in theaters by myself. Loved the look and the movies- I like creepy, but this was creepy! Lol my favorite Laika is ParaNorman. Little more cutesy than this, still creepy but perfect!
You need more Neil Gaiman in this channel
Command S or Control S ftw 😂
Coraline is amazing!! 😄
I think I blocked out this movie. I barely remember it. Saw it as a kid when it came out.
Kinda have a uniqe epexierence with this movie, saw it first not being a Parent and then again after with my daughter. The Parents Clearly love her and take care of her (perhaps not in the way she would like i.e the cooking) but they are going through a stressful time, working on a deadline for a book...the mother refers to just getting past an auto accident and moving. We all go through times when we are stressed and not able to be the best versions of ourselves. Shows just how insidious the Beldam is for choosing just the right time to play on Coraline's isolation and frustration.
There’s an anthology series that I think you should definitely check out. Black Mirror. Can you guys react to this series please?
Vanessa has seen most of it, so we probably won't be reacting to it on the channel.
Ok. What about Daisy Jones and The Six? Have you guys seen that one?
"Why don't they have buttons for eyes?" Well. There is an answer. And you're not gonna like it... Did you happen to, see, something odd when the other mother took the shape of the real mother? Eye'd say there's a good chance, this movie doesn't have a very happy ending...
Yeah, I'm just gonna press the unsee button on the other actresses.
yoo..you guys should watch one piece live action...
🎃🐈⬛ Awesome reaction 🎃
