This song and the album it was from never received the recognition it deserved. Perhaps some fans could not accept and acknowledge that they could write such a brilliant song without Gabriel and Hackett? Who knows. What I do know is that for a ballad, the underlying power in this track is astonishing. One of the all time greats for me.
Couldn't agree more sjhue, this is my favourite album 'and then there were three 'and this is my favourite song, a piece of brilliance, I bought the vinyl 40 years ago this year, jim O'Connell
Fortunately as for me it has my full recogniton . Couldn't love it more!!Listen to it for over 4 decades , since I was a student, again and again!
It's the power and beauty of Mr Tony Banks. Banks was the backbone of that band.
I agree with you
This song in a few songs from Styx which will never get there to say we are all there in the first place
This track, specifically the chorus is, literally, the only reason I'm still on this earth.
I will never understand why this album is seen as a lesser Genesis record. Imo this is one of their best albums and it's perfect for when you're sitting next to your fireplace enjoying a winter's night.
They have always been the most melodic and integrated of the "prog" bands. I find that many of the prog fans that prefer the more avant garde and scattered stuff, can't accept this era of the greatest of all the prog bands. They think it's "commercial" selling out, but really it's just more of the same, with Tony's classical music influences spilling out.
Absolutely 100% agree. I believe they proved all non believers wrong when they thought they would not be as strong after the departure of Steve Hackett. Only goes to show what you can do if you believe in yourself?
This album is good, but Trick of the Tail, Wind and Withering and Duke are just legendary, milestones in the band's evolution, And Then There Were Three is just a little less iconic when compared to them
It's missing Steve's guitar work. Those of us that loved the prog era really notice the difference. The melody is there but it's lacking a key ingredient.
Really. I agree. I think because it was considered a "prog rock" album by the pretentious record reviewers at the time.. Its really an outstanding album. the lyrics are one of the best I've ever heard. Simply romantic
This song was played during my mother's funeral on April 11, 2023, when everybody came in.
She died aged 62 of leukemia on March 31, 2023.
😇🙏🤝
This album touched me so deeply. I was only 11 and played it all day long, sitting in front of to my turn table and watching the record turn and turn , mesmerized , reading the cover and all the info that was only available in those years. It was my discovery of Genesis, at the same time that my brother gave me Selling England as a Pound as a gift. I was trying to put one and one together as to who they were and why it sounded differently from SEBTP. Those 2 records changed my life . I can still listen to this music and feel the same emotions as the first time. It takes me back to my childhood. So touching and great music

So sorry mate. 😢
Sorry for your loss 🙏
So sorry,my friend.😪
So many fans hate on this album, but really, surely, this is a great song.
Agreed, it's a fantastic song. So many great songs on "And Then There Were Three", too.
It's a fantastic album.
Found this album a few weeks ago, And i love it.
I adore the Chorus of the Undertow.
It is one of the greatest albums ever! And "Undertow" is a major reason why And Then There Were Three is a masterpiece!
I think this is a stonking album. A contender for Phil's best drumming and vocal performances.
a very underrated album. So many great songs
Not sure, One of my favorites in all Genesis discography 🙏❤️
It's become my favorite Genesis record. Great transition record. It sounds really far ahead of it's time to. It sounds like it was recorded in like 84.
That line: “Lay down on the ground .. and let the tears flow from you..” Gets me every time. It’s impossible to prepare for it. The sobbing just comes involuntarily. Pure emotion.
I love Tony's signatures keyboard tones
He wrote the entire song.
he IS Genesis
That, and Collins drumming maje this still sound strongly a genesis prog album.
Oh - when that chorus kicks in... pure magic
Having seen them on this tour in a smaller arena, the bass pedals of Tony Banks in those crescendo moments was "otherworldly", powerful and majestic. It buzzed the seats.
genesis always had some of the best and catchiest choruses in the business
Another masterpiece from Tony Banks, he is indeed the soul of the Band.
One of the greatest songs ever done.. Brilliant.. All these years latter..
Genesis doing a ballard of epic standard....as only Genesis can...such a hidden gem
This song breaks me every time I hear it❤
Genesis were always great at encapsulating the seasons with their music. Masters of not only story telling but also scene setting.
This is my favourite Geneis track of all time time. The lyrics are so powerful….let me live again…. Just love this full blast!
Oh man....this song! I will never forget hearing this for the first time driving home in heavy snow on the M69, life was totally crap and this time was a turning point.
A turning point towards a better tomorrow, I hope, yes?
Yes, thx @@barbarahecht4617 ! ☺
I just saw them in Phila last night. They still have the class the heart they've always had. The greatest rock band ever, the Philly audience paid homage to them, so proud of them.
In Cleveland too. Incredible show. So grateful I could be there.
Same but I saw em in Boston. So good to see Chester on guitar with the fellas too!
Bello è che come 40 anni fa mi ridà la stessa emozione.Un ritorno senza spazio .
Ciao Antonio...un brano che ti entra nell' anima... magnifico...e la voce di Phil?...Pura magia ❤
Thank you, gentlemen, for another marvelous song! I've said it before. But this album certainly displays the Power of Three!! Thank you Mike,Tony and Phil!
I like this song! Have listened to it and the other songs maaaaaaany times.
Today for the first time in years.
My records are in Germany, I live in Brazil for many years.....
The best song from this album and one of the best songs in Genesis complete catalog!
Great great album!
One of the best songs of Geiesis' repertoire
No one's songs (The Lady Lies, Nemo, Ballad of Big) can transport you to a magical place where you don't want to come back from like Phil and the boys. I saw this tour in '78 at MSG and it's still in my top 10! (Have seen over 200 including Zep in '77 and The Wall in '80, so my roster is deep). About to see them Dec 10th. I'm prepared for Phil no longer the active musician he was, and I can only liken it to an Eddie Money concert I got a comped ticket for. The girls were screaming wildly for Eddie and quite honestly he didn't look well.. it was a year before he passed so I asked the Girl next to me why are you yelling so much for him? She simply said, we will always love him and we let him know it! I think Phil has earned that from me for sure.
Let's just be glad they are still alive and giving the fans the opportunity to see them. See ya Friday!
The curtains are drawn
Now the fire warms the room
Meanwhile outside
Wind from the north-east chills the air
It will soon be snowing out there
And some there are
Cold, they prepare for a sleepless night
Maybe this will be their last fight
But we're safe in each other's embrace
All fears go as I look on your face
Better think awhile
Or I may never think again
If this were the last day of your life, m friend
Tell me, what do you think you would do then?
Stand up to the blow that fate has struck upon you
Make the most of all you still have coming to you
Lay down on the ground and let the tears run from you
Crying to the grass and trees and heaven finally on your knees
Let me live again, let life come find me wanting
Spring must strike again against the shield of winter
Let me feel once more the arms of love surround me
Telling me the danger's past, I need not fear the icy blast again
Laughter and music and perfume linger here
And there, and there
Wine flows from flask to glass and mouth
As it soothes, confusing our doubts
And soon we feel
Why do a single thing today
There's tomorrow sure as I'm here
So the days they turn into years
And, still no tomorrow appears
Better think awhile, ...
This needs to be upvoted!
Since 1970 the group was in other planet🎵🎶👏🏼👏🏼🙏
Best album from Genesis ever. Maybe because it was the first album I bought when I was 15. Stays in my heart forever.Listened hundreds of times.
I bought this at 15 too. Loved it all my life. This song especially... so full of hope, so uplifting. Beautiful, wonderful, incomparable ❤❤❤
Still makes my soul shiver with happiness ❤️
I rediscovered this album today, after many years. These track is superb, but highlights that I can no longer have those 'arms of love surround me'. 😢
I remember listening to this album for the first time with my girlfriend in her home. I was 16, in 1982. Thank you Denise for introducing me to Genesis, I have loved them since that day....
Thank You Genesis for Your Most awesome Songs Ever
This is a beautiful album the songs take you to a peaceful inner reflection. Genesis is timeless.
One would never expect such a Majestic sound, after going through a personnel reduction(Gabriel, Hackett)! But......... Surprise, surprise! If there was a possibility of anybody coming in new to the Genesis listening camp, They would never expect that's such a change took place. Musical brilliance........ With only 3! Once again, gentlemen,......... Thank you for a period of musical genius and pleasure!
I think out of the ashes the three of them rose again to produce one of their greatest albums!!
I bought the 1994 remaster CD of this album. No words can say enough what a masterpiece "...And Then There Were Three" is. Sublime. But this song is a true divine-inspired work.
I still listen to this album. I'm downloading it to remove the vocals so I can record my vocals with just for my own enjoyment and practice mixing. I'm gonna have a blast doing it. This track is incredible. I think this is my favorite chorus of any of the thousands of phenomenal songs I listen too. Recording sounds a lot softer listening on my Sennhieser headphones. Absolute masterpiece !
The compositional structure of their music is on a par with that of any time-honoured, classical figure you might care to name! ..... Their technical mastery combined with many a profound lesson of life, and also combined with a deep level of emotionality all amount to pure genius! .... And, just to think, such achievement came from a bunch of twenty-something young men ... barely at the beginning of life's complex journey! ... 💖
Fantastic album. This chorus is very hymnal and goes right through me it is so moving melodic and powerful! Shivers!!
Love this album since my university days in the middle of 80s ❤🙏
Tony's keyboard sounds never cease to amaze me. Talk about stepping up . Mike taking on Steves duties like the pro he is. When Peter left and lead vocals fell on Phil. Holy shite did he knock it out of the park. There's a lot of things I like better that Phil does vocally. I've been singing for 38 years so I know what I'm listening too. I'm glad they kept it between them instead of getting new members. Respect is an understatement for me. Thank you for the countless hours enjoying and teaching me tons musically over the decades. And I still listen to your older albums pretty much up to this album regularly. My band did Burning Rope. My keyboard player is a huge Banks fan. He's got Mellotron, B3 with a Leslie, OB8, Fender Rhodes, Arp, mini moog and a baby grand and can play his ass off and sing perfect harmony while doing so. We covered these sounds well. There's a video of us live doing Down an Out on YT. Crucible Prog day 98" We were playing on other people's gear for the most part so it wasn't 100 percent but it's still good. Thanks again fellas.
Not just the music, but the LYRICS. 👀
Ao awesome song changing different tones
Good description for any Genesis tune lol
When I heard this song, I was taken in by Genesis. What an amazing Balad .
Love this song!
Wonderful wonderful wonderful chorus!
The mixing on Collins Drums are so ALive . great songwriting TONY.............2023 now
Thanks for so much amazing music. Hackett's resignation proved that Genesis could be reinvented all the time. And how talented to continue making progressive songs (like "Burning rope" and others), or just pop wonders (like "Follow you, follow me"). And in the middle, "Undertow".
The best prog group and this album is their last prog music, this song is a master piece.
My very favorite album of theirs!
That is one hell of a chorus! Words and music, deep and powerful.
One of my all time favourite Genesis Songs - just great.
So many melodies and chords in this one from the realm of Genesis.
Genesis at the top of their game! Brilliant album!
I wrote many times that this is not by any means the best Genesis album but, I don't know why, it's the album I definitely listen to more often...
the album I enjoyed the most in my life
Their best alongside a trick of the tail.
most beautiful music!!! 😊
What a great song! It is a pity that it's not part of the set list.
This song is so epic It would be hard to perform live. Phil Could have done it but never wanted to do it for the risks.
The sound quality of this is astonishing! Never heard this masterpiece sound so good. Obviously, it is a remaster of the highest order. Thank you Genesis!
… and even more astounding on headphones! 😎
Simply gorgeous .. yet gorgeously complex
Masterpiece Song ❤........5 piece, 4 piece & 3 piece.....it's still The Great Genesis......Another Tony Banks penned Masterpiece.
Моя жизнь, моя любовь, мне было 19 лет в 1978. Я держал этот альбом в руках.
Like l said before it's the last best recording GENESIS gave to us and the WORLD.
questo disco lo ho sempre adorato.
I agree, I love this album. Apparently, they (Phil esp) do not care for it. Just saw the lads last night in Philly. Obviously, not quite the same as they used to be, but they still pull it off fantastically! Great show. Long live Genesis!
It's just a perfect song!❤️🎹🎧
Greatest Genesis song
Thanks for the show on Saturday, Tony, Phil, Mike, Darryl and Nick! Fantastic! ,🤗🤗🤗
Une de mes chansons préférées de genesis...elle me donne des frissons chaque fois que je l ecoute..merci genesis
👍🥶🔥🙂🙃😉🤩👋✌❣🇧🇪
The follow up to this track should be Tony Bank's From The Undertow. That is the musical section originally conceived as part of the track but due to time restraints was dropped, now it only appears on "A Curious Feeling" Tony's first solo album.
Beautiful music and memories ❤️🌟
Only 19 430 views and 634 likes!!! Are we so little to have good taste??? Of course I LOVE GENESIS, love this album and that song, and so many others. Incomparable. Music may never get better than this my friends...
One of my favorite songs ever
This is an tremendously great album and don"t let anybody tell you it isn"t.
My heart really breaks in two...thank U so much for being in my life since I was so young....ages ago🤭
The sun rises again and again 🌞✨🌞✨
ANNA MARIE , THIS SONG AND THIS ALBUM ARE TRUE MAGIC❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@fabriziomanco7563 👍👏👌😍✌❣🇧🇪
What a song .
Like Mad Man Moon, this song is a legacy of Tony's inspired early 1970s period.
one of their best with the best opener
Gênesis era Banks!
What a chorus!
Stand up to the blow that fate has struck upon you
Make the most of all you still have coming to you
Lay down on the ground and let the tears run from you
Crying to the grass and trees and heaven finally on your knees
Let me live again, let life come find me wanting
Spring must strike again against the shield of winter
Let me feel once more the arms of love surround me
Telling me the danger's past, I need not fear the icy blast again...
Thank you for this beautiful piece of art.
A Stoic Cry.
I absolutely love it ! 👏👏👏👏♥️♥️♥️
You all are awesome Legends
Sinto minha alma leve, esta musica em especial me fascina me transporta as vezes me faz chorar mais não é este o proposito de todas obra de arte ? emocionar?
......just beautiful.🌟
Quizá la mejor canción del album. Inspirada y bien arreglada. La interpretación de Phil Collins es excelente. Imagino que al principio pocos pensarían que podía sustituir a Peter Gabriel, pero lo hizo, y muy bien.
Such an Incredible Song and Album
Divine Song of my favourite Album! I love you Genesis! 💖🎼🎶
je frissonne quand j'écoute cet album et particulièrement cette chanson
Temazo!!!
Favolosa
With ATTWT people always whine about who is no longer in the band and one three minute song but it's never escaped me how ATTWT is still in the upper echelon of 70s prog rock. Been a Genesis fan since Trespass, and was thrilled when ATTWT was released. 1978 was slow for prog, Genesis (ATTWT), Rush (Hemispheres), and UK (In The Dead Of Night) saved 1978.
Totally! This album is soooo underrated, I get it, there's no "Supper's Ready" stuff on it, but it's still not that far from the good old proggy Genesis, and it has some of the elegance their earlier records lack
Forgot about this song. It's great.
Ive had this cd permanently on in the car for about a month,I go through phases,I love it cant get enough of it
So glad I discovered this album of theirs❤❤❤
I don't like genesis music in general but this album is probably the greatest album I've dver heard
Molto coerente
I just read that Phil Collins said that he didn't like these songs. He called these tunes period pieces. I admit that I didn't know the songs on this album except follow you follow me - which I love.
So I decided to check out this album and I have to say I like it. It gave me a nostalgia I didn't know I had.
******** Best.
All you people with their after the fact guesses. This album was HUGE when it came out. I was so lucky to have seen the tour of this LIVE at the CNE (Toronto, Canada) with MAX WEBSTER opening (there's an under rated band outside of Canada) my two favourite bands of all time in one FANTASTIC SHOW!
With thousands of people all crammed in together, face to face, shoulder to shoulder, no one (that I know of) got ill afterwards, living in LOVE and TRUTH and proud to be a Canadian in such a free country! I sure hope we can again, but one things is for sure, music will never be like this. Thank God for allowing me to have grown up in such a free and beautiful and musically magnificent time!
Now I just hope I can get the groceries I need when I go shopping (no bare shelves); what a change of times! Keep safe, stay strong, eat healthy, and remember to thank God for all of your blessings, and keep listening to music like this, it carries the Spirit of Divine Love, immortalized for all time!
Gran canción.
A brilliance we could only hope to achieve. ✨️💖✨️
