For All Mankind season 2 episode 1 just debuted on Apple TV+. The space program focused series jumped ahead to 1983 where the space race with the Soviet Union continued to push and the United States continued to colonize the moon. At Jamestown Base astronaut Ellen Wilson/Waverly (Jodi Balfour) is completing what may be her last trip to the lunar base. Her crew finds itself in jeopardy when a solar fire causes a coronal mass ejection and a cloud of radiation moves their way. Veteran Molly Cobb (Sonya Walger) is faced with a decision where she risks her own safety to save a fellow astronaut who is caught in the radiation.
On earth in episode 1 we catch up with all the main characters. Margot Madison (Wrenn Schmidt) has advanced to lead flight for NASA. Ed Baldwin (Joel Kinnaman) is Head of Astronaut. His wife Karen Baldwin (Shantel VanSanten) now owns the Outpost bar, and they’ve adopted a daughter named Kelly Baldwin (Cythy Wu). Gordo (Michael Dorman) and Tracy Stevens (Sarah Jones) are no longer married.
For All Mankind season 2 episode 1 explains a lot of what happened during the time jump with an opening montage. We learn that Ronald Regan became president in 1986, and the Soviet Union never invaded Afghanistan. Things like these present unique possibilities for ripple effects in the alternate timeline. The US and the USSR are continuing to expand their operations on the moon. They have stopped honoring the Space Treaty that was signed, which may mean that conflict is coming.
Let us know what your theories are for season 2 of For All Mankind, and where you think the series is heading.
This For All Mankind season 2 episode 1 breakdown explains what happened in the episode including the ending. We discuss what happened to the characters and what it might mean for the rest of the season.

Season 2 of For All Mankind seems to be going in the right direction. Interested to see where it goes after the premiere. Let me know what you think.
Just a quick question.
With the weird spiky movements of the moon's dust during the radiation spike. I know it is caused by the exposure to high amounts of radiation, but what part of that interaction causes the formations?
Great review! Lots to look forward too. You're in for some great surprises! (I work on the show) :)
@@ZaraTheFemboy electrically charged particles, which in this case is basically super-fast protons/hydrogen atoms being blasted from the sun
Yep, so far so good. I hope they're finding their way through some of the meandering that happened in S1. It doesn't need to be all action all the time at all, but there was so much focus on the personal lives in stories that were more like symbols of that time than altogether interesting personal stories.
@@reddfieldmusic4769 can't wait.
This show needs more attention
Yes! Please do more of these Pete
Hope some people are watching it.
Do more. This show needs more attention
Yeah....just started season 1....liking it so far
This show is bloody amazing. It needs so much more attention. I really want to see where this show goes. Mars? The Jovian Moons? The Ring Gat........Wrong show. :-)
Working on a timeline video, and will continue with episode breakdowns for the time being.
Season 1 is very boring it's going to be had for people to stick with it
Should Make it available on other streaming services than Apple tv.
I found out about this series when I was googling for Ron D. Moore. If this show was on CBS or Netflix it would be No1 must see-show in the world! Ron D. Moore is a brilliant writer and creator. He has the magic touch: TNG, DS9, BSG, Outlander etc.
Moon scene at the end of the episode was soo beautiful and haunting
Agreed.
Just started this show a couple weeks ago and finished season one. Love it. Season two seems to build upon what was laid down and improves upon it. So glad I found this channel to recap after every episode.
Here i am 8 years later seeing season 2 for the first time. We just subscribed to Apple and have been going through a bunch of shows. I found out Ronald D. Moore was involved with this series and I had to watch. Season 1 took a few episodes to hook me but it sunk it's teeth in now and I'm in for the ride!
Found your channel during the expanse season 5. I’m so glad your doing For All Mankind videos!
We'll see how it goes. Thanks for watching.
this show needs more viewers.. it's like a prequel to the Expanse :D
To me. It’s better than the Expanse so far.
Yes ,someone said that before and I agree pre Expanse I loved the 1 st season the 2nd premier felt slow to me
I am just now hearing about this. I found the video by accident. WHY THE HELL IS THIS NOT PROMOTED. APPLE IS MISSING OUT.
It's Downton Abbey in spacesuits
Damn...this was my exact through when they panned to a wide shot of Jamestown colony
This is a great breakdown, I don't understand why this doesn't have more views
Doesn't seem like a lot of people are watching the show. Hopefully it'll pick up.
Wow Wubbo Okckels on the moon, our Flying Dutchman would have liked that! The man who got me hooked on everything space related, with his tv show around 1988 in the Netherlands. In our timeline he accualy died of cancer in 2014. Wubbo had the gift of explaining physics a way that it was easy to understand for a teenager.
And thanks Pete for breaking down For All Mankind! Great work!
Saw this while checking out your playlists - thanks for turning me on to a great show!
Joined the channel for your Mr Robot and Expanse reviews, saw this show in your reviews ... binged Season 1 right away, wow!
Only learned about this amazing show from you !
me too! I really enjoyed season 1 btw
This recap was really helpful, thank you!now for episode 2.
Great video! Please, do a season 1 recap video, there isn’t one on youtube and even though I watched it twice, so much stuff happens, it’s hard to keep track of everything. I’d love to see your take on it. Thank you for the awesome job as always!
I've thought about doing a season 1 recap, but kind of missed the window. Will think about it.
Two simple words to keep my interest, "Ron. Moore." I may also be biased as a big Apollo nerd. I've really enjoyed the series so far. Characters with depth, great production values, writing/situations with consequences set in the sweep of history with that quirky sci-fi twist per the alt. reality which makes if feel familiar and new all at the same time. Reminds me of one of my favorite graphic novels, "Ministry of Space" by Warren Ellis and Chris Weston wherein the U.K. comes to lead the space race. As a series, I think/hope that For All Mankind has a long life.
I loved the show in season 1 so I'm here for it if you keep on doing the videos in Season 2 and beyond!
man this was so in depth, awesome recap
Glad it's working for you.
Amazing review. Well done!
Keep up the good work on these reviews. Nobody else is reviewing this.
Yes! I love your coverage of The Expanse. I think For All Mankind is a great show. The first season was definitely slower than what I’m used to but the concept and execution are both top notch.
Once I heard Ronald D. Moore was involved I knew it would be great.
thank you - please continue thru all episodes ...
Yay! I absolutely love your Expanse videos, so I am so excited about this!
just finished the series for now and it's great that I can now watch your recaps. I really like the show especially the alternate history and it was cool to hear names that I heard on the news in the 80s and to see the reimagining of Appollo Soyuz which I actually saw on TV as a kid.
Coming from the future, sort of. Just got into this show thanks to my older son. Just started Season 3, so catching upnon your recaps. As usual you did a nice job ofbseeing wherebthings are going. I toonlike Margo and find it interesting how this timeline has sped things uven Margo's Scully haircut, which is a decade early, but looks great on her as well.
I watched all 3 eps. of "Tribes of Europa." It was pretty good too. I hope Pete continues to do reviews when the last 3 eps. drop.
I have watched S1 and enjoyed but have to rewatch to remember. And Tribes of Europa and Resident Alien of all things! You keep me on my toes Pete, Haha!
I see they bumped up the shuttle to work in deep space and LEO. nice
I'm glad you're covering this show! I'm just getting into season 2 now, loved season 1 and I'm curious to see where this is going to go!
The season 2 finale is pretty crazy. Sick with it.
@@PetePeppers1 I'm really enjoying it! We just have time to watch one episode per night after the kids go to bed.
Hey, glad you made this video. I liked first season but didn't quite know what kind of show it was. IT had great moments, interesting characters, well acted but it's just basically a pumped up historic documentaty, I wouldn't even know how to recommend it to people.
But this episode renewed my intererest a lot, I feel like the writers are doing an excellent work and the cinematography is a pleasure to watch. I hope this show picks up more interest and that the creator are rewarded for their efforts cuz it's fucking good while not being in a "marketable' genra.
Keep up the good work ;)
I didn't watch season one. But you really sold it to me with this. I'm getting a Halt And Catch Fire vibe here, on of my all-time favorites. A great blend of tech and real human connections.
Big fan of Halt and Catch Fire too. Miss that show.
Keep ‘em com’n
I love this.
Yes, keep these vids coming! And I'm glad I wasn't the only one looking for hints in the background in every scene to see how much different the timeline is. As an example, I noticed the Skylab photos as well as the 'real' one we see later had BOTH solar panel arrays, whereas in our timeline, one of the arrays snapped off during launch, leaving it with only one.
Thank you as well to the heads up about the extra added info on the HBO website for the show. I'll definitely catch up on that.
You mentioned that the invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviets was one of the factors for the breakup some years later, but another was Chernobyl. So I wonder if this will also be averted (like 3Mile Island was), or will an equivalent significant event take it's place? Maybe something on the Soviet base, perhaps? We'll see....
Was wondering about Chernobyl in relation to them showing that Three Mile Island didn't happen too.
Please keep reviewing this show. This episode was very promising. Thanks
Pete, glad your doing this show, it's good, needs some buzz.
I binged watched this because it is on your channel. I would recommend a Handmaid's tale if you like alternative dystopian fiction if you can handle it. I would love to see you review it.
I wouldn't have heard of this show if I didn't subscribe to Pete. Thanks. I'll have to check out S1.
Dude I would love a video with more Easter eggs as I see so much little detail
Great review! (as a part of the team who makes the show, appreciate your comments on the visuals!) :)
Thanks. The show looks amazing.
@@PetePeppers1 thanks for saying! Lots of talented artists and technicians make it look good...
@@reddfieldmusic4769 I'm sure. Sounds great too. Especially in the space scenes, the score really elevates things.
I think you misunderstand why it was important that Molly remove her dosimeter. It wasn't that she didn't want to know. If it went red, she'd be grounded. As it is, she can go back and just say that she must have run fast enough to not get a major dose.
She'll still be active, but will undoubtedly have health fallout later that's important to the plot.
I didn't misunderstand that, they just didn't reveal if she's going to lie for sure. She was definitely keeping the option open.
love the expanse since i have apple tv i’ll give this show a try looks interesting
Naren Shankar writes for both.
Worth checking out. Picks up in the back half of the first season, and feels like it's improving in season 2.
I would love to see more on this TV show it has a lot of potential.
Got some new stuff I'm working on.
I gotta start this show!
Loved the 1st season, great characters with super interesting storylines ; this is so epic ! I love the casting too. Didn't know what an uchronia was, but I must say I'm a fan :)
It's fun to speculate on how things might change as time goes on in the alternate timeline.
@@PetePeppers1 Super fun ! :)
Can you or anyone tell me how to view the one giant leap video timeline? I only have the app. Is it only available on the Apple TV device? Thank you for this video, it cleared some of my confusion after the new episode.
I can see it on my phone, too. Just go to the page for the show (not the individual episode) and scroll down.
It's cool show!
I just realized the astronauts suit have LED lights...so, along with electric cars they also have LED technology in the 80's. Interesting
Seems like there are more advancements to come based on the trailer.
I seem to recall LEDs being a thing in the 80s. They weren't very big tho.
I binged season 1, I find the show interesting
that regolith dancing in the proton-shower was scary af
It was crazy.
This scene with footprints being erased by the solar storm suggests that Neil and Buzz's footprints have long since eroded away. Could this really be the case so quickly?
Do a FAMK Season 1 recap!
it is the magnetic field not the atmosphere that protects Earth and LEO spacecraft from radiation

*With Enterprise in active service there is no shuttle Challenger which in real life was brought into service as a cost-cutting measure over a refit of Enterprise
I wonder what happened to the Sea Dragon rocket from the end of last season, and why they would take a step down to the shuttle?
They use the sea dragon to deliver payloads. In the short they made about it they explained that they used it for some of the expansion on Jamestown base.
The Sea Dragon is bananas!
That Sea Dragon launch was awesome. The best part of season 1. I replay it whenever i need a boost.
IDK, but like first season more, but I hope that it will change.
Hopefully they’ll show us Danielle and Adelaida next week.
I think they'll be back.
There's interest.
I don't have Apple 🍎 TV, or for that matter ANY apple product but would really like to watch this show.
There's a 7 day free trial when you sign up for the first time. They give 1 year free when you buy an Apple device.
@@PetePeppers1 That sounds like good deal, the one year free, but I'm really not an apple product fan.
I have bought 4 high end Apple phones and an iWatch but those were for other people and I don't think Apple TV was streaming then, almost 2 years ago
Why is the whole 1st episode of season 2 just a black screen
Why is there a Canadian flag on the ESA patch?
The Canadian astronaut was also wearing what appears to be an ESA patch. Doesn't seem to be any explanation of it...maybe in the alternate reality of a fast track space program, Canada opted to contribute to ESA. European institutions are often open to outside participants, like Israel's membership in CERN, so not too far fetched.
In ur synopsis of the video u said Reagan became president in 1986. That's a midterm election year both in the alternate & real timeline. IRL, he was first elected in 1980, in this show, 1976, which is what u meant.
Didn't know about this show, I guess I finally activate the free Apple+ year I got from multiple Apple devices and never cared about...
The space program we could have had if things went a little differently.
I am just now hearing about this. I found the video by accident. WHY THE HELL IS THIS NOT PROMOTED. APPLE IS MISSING OUT.
I think wubbo could survive depending on how long they have to wait
I did not know this existed,or that apple had there own streaming service.
they need better PR
I don’t think you would want to look directly into the sun
Loved the episode. But don't really like how much they throw at Molly as a character. Feels like everything bad that happens in this show, gravitates around her. Id like to see them spread around stuff a bit more.
Just a thought for the viewers....Space X will probably create a moon colony with-in this decade using Starship (if all goes OK)...and it will be more magnificent than anything shown here.
The basic premise behind this series is very good, but I think it would be more interesting if it was from the soviets point of view.
Just coming in the comments to make a HAL 9000 reference.
Love this show, but was so annoyed with this episode because she didn’t have to run back to the cave. They could’ve just sheltered in the shadow of the big boulder since radiation is line of sight...They get so much of the science right and then miss a big thing like this. They could’ve just shot the scene with different terrain were there weren’t any boulders to hide behind... but they just leave this glaring failure to understand basic physics. Oh well. TV drama...
Radiation, light of sight ? sort of , in you dont include that it does through every material except lead. They even specified they need 3m of regalite to be "safe". Hiding behind a hunk of metal would be protection of what, 5 , 10 % maybe ? That cave is probably not enough but has to provide a good 60% protection. Numbers are out of my butt to give an idea of what i mean. Nah man line of sight isn't quite right.
Do you think people 1000Km around tchernobyle who stayed indoor were safe? No man no
Amazing Hard Scfi !!!
The expanse is the best Hard Scfi in the world but .... Wowser For All Mankind is trying to outcompete it for the best Hard Scfi!!! Hard Scfi has the golden thread of science!!! Amazing!!!
Acting, Writing, Direction, Story!!! Impressive!!!!!!!!!!!
Is is really possible for a solar storm to erase lunar footprints so quickly? This does not seem correct.
Possible but would have to be a massive one
The whole thing doesnt make sense at all.
Maggie should have died, or at least been discovered immediately.
Fucking dogshit writing.
The largest solar event that happened during the era of space flight was X23, and we know from orbital images that astronaut and rover tracks are still intact after that.
Flares do get bigger, though. The Carrington Event was possibly as high as X42, but happened long before spaceflight so we don't know what it could have done to the regolith.
What an amazing show. Season 1 was awesome, season 2 is shaping up to be even better!!
It's only downside is being on Apple, a company I will never support.
The Soviets invaded Afghanistan because a Communist leader was deposed by his second in command named Amin whom the Russians disliked. The Soviets feared Amin would ultimately switch sides and join the US. Brezhnev wasn't going to allow an ally fall as the optics of that would look bad among other Communist regimes. The only way the Soviets do not invade is if there's no infighting between political factions in Afghanistan going back to 1973 at least........impossible.
Why would Israel and Egypt fail to compromise at Camp David? Because a Democrat wasn't elected? Because Reagan was? Sadat was done with the Soviets by 1974. His only choice was to join the US and thus make peace with Israel. The writers for the show need to do their homework.
How do we have a fleet of Space Shuttles? Those spacecraft were hangar queens in real life. Where are we getting all of these amazing leaps in technology from? Tech wise everything is moving at far too fast in this AR.
East German Border Guards chase down two DDR citizens into West Berlin and fire on them? Uh no even they would know that was inviting disaster.
If you're going to have a good Alternate Reality show it has to think about realistic geo-politics and the actual speed of tech evolution. You can't just shuffle things around to fit a fantasy simply designed to include more minorities, women, and electric cars.
I started watching season 1. It's too slow and preachy. I was going to leave a comment at the 'For All Mankind' channel, but they're not allowing it. I don't care what Moore has done in the past, in other shows.. But if Moore is the show runner, I think my interest in "For All Mankind" is over. I couldn't stomach anymore. In the beginning of the 3rd episode, I started skipping the drama crap. After that, I started skipping episodes, I gave up at the beginning of episode 5. I HATED the 60's, so basing the show at that time was a poor and tacky choice. Which is ironic, because the 60's had GREAT scifi. I do like that more woman are involved, but I want space adventure, not a history lesson from Moore. And I HATED the reboot of BSG. And I'm starting to think FAM will be another rBSG. I just looked up Ronny Moore's awards, they are ALL for drama. I'm looking for scifi. Do I have to wait till season 3 before the show gets interesting, and looks more like the promo picture/poster. Because it's the promo picture/poster that got my interest. I know people loved rBSG, but I wish people would realize because sets and adventure on tv shows, are expensive, they replaced it with drama. If I want drama, I'd watch a daytime soap opera. I really wish we could communicate directly to these morons like Jar Jar Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, and Ronny Moore, I'd tell them, "You people are NO Steven Spielberg, so stop pretending." There has to be a way to make scifi shows, without the stupid cheap drama. I don't give a flying F*ck!!!!!!!!, who is cheating in the marriage, or shaky marriage, or turning to alcohol because they had a bad day at work. If you watch STNG, Voyager, DS9, TOS, and Babylon 5, they didn't have those STUPID plot points. And those shows lasted for years.
So in this universe because of the USSR in the space race al didn’t bomb the twin towers nice
I like this series, but seriously, does every male astronaut need to be rescued by their female counterpart. I appreciate the strong female characters don't get me wrong but most of the males are either shown as emotional weak tormented soles or constantly require rescue from some accident.
Now you're understanding why the show sucks ass now.
The same thing happened in season 1 but only once and it was well set up and explained.
All the good writers got canned for being white males tho . . . big sad
Season 1 was good but 2 is total ass.
The radiation should've been discovered immediately because they have geiger counters all over the base.
Stupid dogshit writing JUST for the sake of artificial drama.
Add all the garbage woke nonsense that was handled infinitely better in the first season.
Also why do they send marines to space instead of navy seals?
Hush little orange profile picture...
@@GuilhermeM1 keep defending bad television . . . emoji from 2005
Hi. In the Apple series "For All Mankind" there is a scene where a Mom slaps a young boy. This is child abuse. The scene and any others like it should be deleted. If it can't be deleted then the entire series should be deleted. Has anyone seen this scene? How do you feel about it? Because there is so much other violence in media does that excuse this scene? Will adults watching it decide this kind of violence is ok and will children watching learn that this kind of violence is normal?
Pete! You usually nail reviews but this one is completely off base. The writing was awful the production values low. The director couldn't keep one shot for more than a second or two. The opening Montage was nothing but right-wing militarism. A different timeline where we end up with Reagan as president? After a few minutes on the moon the next half-hour is nothing but boring melodrama that is totally meaningless to a change timeline. Why would I care about eating spaghetti in a restaurant or some astronaut's divorce? The only thing that was any good was the last five minutes and why did she wait so long to leave the cave? Compared to something like the expanse this is space trash. I love sci-fi but I don't want to be beat over the head with right-wing militarism in a TV show.
The point of an alternate timeline or counterfactual is to look at how things might be different if something that didn't happen happened. In this case how would things be different if the Soviets got the Moon first. The politics were the same before that happened so the changes need to reflect that.
