    Official Apple TV+ Logline:
    Rocketing into the new millennium in the eight years since season three, Happy Valley has rapidly expanded its footprint on Mars by turning former foes into partners. Now 2003, the focus of the space program has turned to the capture and mining of extremely valuable, mineral-rich asteroids that could change the future of both Earth and Mars. But simmering tensions between the residents of the now-sprawling international base threaten to undo everything they are working towards.

      This was the only plot twist that wasn't telegraphed a mile away and was genuinely unexpected. For 4 seasons, since the show started. And arguably, if not the only then the smartest point of writing in the show so far. Where would it lead? As you said, anything could happen - I am not sure I believe in the writer's competency to capitalize on such a big plot point to the fullest extent. So far, it smells like increasing independence of the Martian colony that would also fuel money siphon (previously mentioned trillions of $) from Earth's superpowers, which will be the foundation of a long term grudge between Earth and Mars. And don't forget, CIA and KGB have agents on the base - I hope they don't forget that the very next episode and actually capitalize on that information.

    This was such a weird episode until it all made sense. The reason for the strike was Helios' unilateral decision to lower bonuses - a very absurd move given the high stakes and short time window to capture the asteroid. This change was likely instigated by Dec, as he is the Helios CEO. Then the strike goes on for 8 days without Dev's involvement or pressure from M-7 countries on Dev to reverse the absurd Helios policy. Even when he is en route to Mars, they can easily contact him... The strike ends when Dev promises 88 million dollars - which highlights the absurdity of the initial decision to lower bonuses. It all makes far more sense when it gets revealed that he wants to keep the asteroid near Mars. And he intentionally created the strike to serve his purpose. Well done! Or well played!

      Needed to sniff out the revolutionaries for his takeover of Mars without anyone realizing. Now he has his zealots but to anyone on the outside they just look like defeated labor organizers. At worse people will block further organizing efforts but nobody is even thinking about nationalists extremists and they definitely don't think the greedy capitalist is the mastermind, really only Ed is on the radar.
      A genius move so long as nobody sniffs out the Martian nationalism brewing before Dev's coup.

      again, it's not 88 million... he only said 88 spots left because the first guy repped 12 workers. it's still 100 million in quadruple bonuses - which excludes all the other stuff, especially the offer of helios stock, which might be worth billions after they get the asteroid.
      but yea... good catch about how dev was not contacted at all to negotiate anything. it seems like he definitely included the strike in his plans, and very likely instigated it with the shit changes in the contract, which is weird since i don't think they can just modify everything so much unilaterally. but hey, is helios even subject to any earth-based laws?

      That might be Ed's motives but best we can tell the workers have legitimate grievances. Nah, that wouldn’t work bc the cohesiveness of happy valley relies on Helios and the other nations of Earth to cooperate. • @Hevach
      @Hevach 7 місяців тому +1

      @@salutic.7544 Happy Valley needs that because it's a money pit. But once Happy Valley has Goldilocks they have the most valuable trade resource in the solar system. They are no longer a money pit but the gatekeepers to the future, and Dev will be in a position to dictate a lot of economic terms to the nations of Earth, and even to Helios itself if he loses control of its terrestrial or translunar operations.
      I think Dev made the bonus changes to engineer a labor crisis while he was en route. He gave them a generous offer, but the important thing to him was that whatever they get, they get it from HIM, not those angry guys at the negotiation table.

    Dev's offer was at least generous. Without knowing what the workers already got its hard to say how good. But notice that the gains are baseline, not bonus - nobody has to risk their lives chasing points to get them like that guy who died in episode 1, they just have to do the job.
    The reaction from the crew makes me seriously feel like his offer is better than their demands, if not in full potential than in palatability, being able to get the best benefits without the risk chasing bonus system. The only holdouts were holding out not because of money, but because they beleived the deal meant losing Goldilocks and with it most of the jobs on Mars would be lost shortly after, and the gains would be gone with them. But Dev is delivering on that, too, he's just playing it close to the chest for now.
    My guess: Dev intentionally made the horribe bonus changes before leaving Earth specifically to engineer this crisis. This way he could arrive at Mars and immediately make it rain and give the workers a net improvement. Maybe he was open to their plight, maybe they're just tools and he's oiling the blades for the job ahead, but the important thing was that they get their gains direct from him and not from negotiators at the table.
    He wasn't just being generous, he was bringing back that cult of personality he had last season. He's building a loyal corps of emoloyees because stealing Goldilocks will likely mean he will need to steal Mars along with it.

    Even as someone who went on strike this year for better wages, this ending makes sense considering the time period, even for an alternate history. There was a lot of anti-union sentiment floating around. I remember auto execs smearing UAW's leadership in 2008ish.
    Also, what Dev did, he used of a lot of the tactics that Howard Schultz the Starbucks CEO did in order to keep the shop non-union around the same time. Great healthcare, stock in the company, and other benefits. Dev would have kept up.

    I think one way of explaining the murkiness of Ed's motives is not just to one-up Dani. It's also because he's trying to find an outlet for that drive to take heroic risks, but not being able to pay those off in a grand way. We see that in the first season when he missed the opportunity to land on the Moon on Apollo 10, and in the third season when he was not able to land on Mars first. Now that in this season, he's noticing that his body isn't what it used to be and his dismissal as XO, he's still craving to be "the hero" who pushes to become a pioneer so he can get the glory he always desired. And what better way to do that "risk-free" than being a working-class hero leading the first strike on Mars?
    That's what I sensed when he saw that his bonuses (?) along with others were getting slashed by Helios. This was the right opportunity, not just to stick it to Dani, but also to fulfill his own hero complex. I think he genuinely believes that by spearheading the improvement of working conditions in Happy Valley, he could finally be the pioneer he always wanted to be. And Dev's proposal to steal the asteroid only helps amplify that complex. I know that comparing Ed when he talked to Miles and Ed now, he looks like a hypocrite. But if you add in his motive of always wanting to be first, his motives make sense.

    • @elikerr785

      I'm not Pete, but Fargo and FAM are entirely different types of shows... Fargo being an anthology compared to FAM taking place across multiple decades in the same timeline is one example. Fargo is more of a crime/dark comedy show, whereas FAM is a drama/sci-fi/alternate history epic. FAM is sorta like "Mad Men with NASA". It depends on what type of show you're looking to get into. It's all about the characters in FAM, and Fargo is more story and dialogue driven, and you're more likely to get really invested into the characters of FAM. You should watch the pilot of each show and you'll get a pretty good sense of which direction you want to go, IMO.

    I love this series and you are so right. When Dev approached Ed and started talking about taking what is rightfully theirs I too thought that the writers must have lost their minds. This can’t go anywhere. I’m still skeptical because regardless of Ed and Dev and their yearning to never go back to Earth, what good is money to them? The Goldilocks Astroid is worth an astonishing sum but after the wool is pulled over the proverbial eyes of the powers that be back on Earth, do they really expect any shipments of supplies for the survival on Mars? Plus when the rest of the population gets wind of this and the fact that, for all they know, the M-7 or even any single country / countries of the pact would be willing to garner support and supplies to Mars, even for those not in on the scheme. Cash money is basically moot up there. The workers are anticipating going back home one day and bringing a check to the bank or a sweet direct deposit or whatever and if that option is not on the table anymore then, other than Ed and Dev, what do they really have to look forward to?
    I believe Ed and Dev are both, because of what they have been through in their lives, are just literally prepared to pay the ultimate price. Ed was always a shoot from the hip kind of guy but he was strict and disciplined and had standards and he was a good father and husband….for the most part and I say that loosely because he really was but nobody is perfect. But you can see his slip into a different man just in the case of allowing his grandchild to sneak through a duct to obtain highly sensitive material. He never would have allowed that in season one, two and even a bit onward. Even Gordo would probably not have approved that and that is saying something. But I think Ed and Dev don’t really care anymore about any monetary gain, they are pretty much prepared to meet their maker’s at any time. But that’s not very comforting I would imagine for the rest of the Mars community.

    Dani’s behavior seemed peculiarly out of character in this episode. Normally she’s extremely responsible and careful, hell it’s one of the main reasons she was chosen as captain of Sojourner last season. Green lighting bypassing a regulator like that doesn’t seem like something she would do. It’s the kind of behavior she normally scolds Ed for. Goldilocks has even the most level headed people acting crazy.

      As Cringelord said, she wasn't aware of what were they doing exactly. And even if she did, she is the one who listens to people with more expertise in the field - which is what that astronaut claimed to be. The fault for this is actually on the guy leading the team on site. He is the technician on location and a leader of the group, he should have been the one calling the shots. He screwed up managing his team.
      In every organization, chain of command and job delegation are mandatory. Dani is NOT responsible for what individuals in the team do, she is responsible for the Team Lead, and that Team Lead is then responsible for those under his direct command. While overall blame is on her as the commander of the entire operation, for which she will be chewed up by her immediate superiors, who will in turn be chewed up by their superiors (the president), who will then be chewed up by the public... and so on.
      There is always a chain of command and who's responsible for what. For this disaster, she wasn't to blame directly, but there is command blame and her even letting it come to this stage (the whole situation). But for bypassing the regulator, she didn't know it was being done, or if she knew, she wasn't trained to judge whether that decision is correct or not - that is on the man on the location leading the team of technicians.

    • @alveolate
      @alveolate 7 місяців тому +2

      i wouldn't fault dani for most of what happened... except that final bit when she personally leads the "deputized" folks on an unwarranted search of everyone's belongings, which implied they thought the striking workers were actually responsible for the explosion and are under suspicion of further sabotage. that's just complete and utter bs! literal fascism at work there... which is completely out of character for dani.

    • @Wustenfuchs109
      @Wustenfuchs109 7 місяців тому +4

      @@alveolateWhy? It was clear that the workers took the regulator - which IS against the law. You are free to protest and strike, you have that right. You DON'T have the right to sabotage an installation by removing its parts. That is textbook sabotage and the law does not protect you in that instance.
      Also, she didn't deputize anyone, command on Earth did. Their job was to find out who are the saboteurs and to put a stop to it. Remember, those people were maintaining the entire base - who can tell what will be the end point? Maybe an air filter gets removed next for the top floor?
      They were completely within their rights to go and search.
      The thing is, and that is a fault of the writers, the way they did the search was wrong. Just throwing things everywhere, hardly even looking - that's how a search is done on a film to make it more dramatic - which IS utter bs. Also, a 5kg gas regulator is not going to be hiding between the books or in a food tray.
      The scene is stupid, but there was nothing wrong in principle.

    My problem with the labor dispute was the nature of it. The big complaint was so many were hired to do higher paying jobs that were then suddenly cancelled because of the accident at the asteroid, and now having to do other jobs that paid less. That the contract would stipulate that option rather than just sending them back home seems stupid. Why keep a bunch of extra personnel in a place that's really expensive to keep people? Had to be cheaper to give them termination pay and send them home. But, then you wouldn't have the manufactured crisis to create personal friction between the main characters. Also rather surprised that Helios labor hadn't already unionized given the steady labor force on the moon.

    • @danive89
      @danive89 7 місяців тому +1

      1. The union labour on the moon was shut down, most likely because it’s easier to replace people on the moon. It was mentioned in the last episode.
      2. Their two main complaints were lower bonuses (new pay structure meant that they would have to do 10x more work to get a 1/4 of the bonus) and that Goldilocks was being sent to Earth (which means they would only earn bonuses in that 10 week window they have)
      3. Helios invested 150k in training and traveling of the workers. They will have to make that money worth it. Cutting short their employment would be a loss on their part.

    • @frankbieser
      @frankbieser 7 місяців тому

      @@danive89 Understood. Yeah, I had a problem with the moon/union explanation. If it were easy to replace skilled labor, there would be no union workers on oil platforms.
      And yeah, the loss of Goldilocks is a hit on their future, as it is for anyone involved (which is why they're going to do what they're going to do). A lot was riding on the success of that first mission to the rock.
      Well, we don't know what it costs to just keep a body on Mars in the FAMK universe. In reality, for a outpost that size, a lot more than the cost of training and the return trip and some termination pay. Every sol they are up there is a lot more money to pay out, not just in salary, but the cost of maintaining a large habitat in an extraordinarily hostile environment. Way more expensive than maintaining bases at the south pole. I just don't think the economics work out to support the plot they are trying to follow.

If that is the kind of thing Ed and Dev are thinking about, I hope they do a better job of explaining this vision soon. Because otherwise this "something greater than themselves" is a big empty hole right now. Ed in particular seems of have got religion of sorts about Mars' future all of a sudden, without any particular signs of it before. Does he have a grand vision too? Or is Ed's motivation some combination of his typical pot-stirring and a nervous desire to be allowed to stay on Mars for the rest of his life ... a kind of retirement anxiety?

    Everybody in the comments seems to be making the same "This is The Expanse prequel" joke/comment.
    It's worth noting though that the time difference between the first settling of Mars and the establishment of the MCR (The Martian Congressional Republic) in The Expanse universe was somewhere in the neighbourhood of 200-250 years.
    Also the socio-political dynamics are markedly different (most significantly the existence of a SINGULAR global government (The UN) that doesn't exist in either our real timeline or the FAM timeline, and which will likely never exist in either in any of our lifetimes).
    That being said, they do have all the necessary ingredients like with Mars potentially becoming a major resource hub for a much valued resource in hub and (in all likelihood) likely to attract a lot of smart scientists and engineers, if they successfully "Steal" Goldilocks and pull it to Mars orbit. And in The Expanse, the MCR was founded and built on the basis of a lot of some of Earth's smartest engineers emigrating to Mars to establish a new society before eventually seeking independence from the UN Earth Government and being the most technologically advanced or driven nation-planet in the Solar System.

What I don’t get is why they’re nickel and diming them. If Goldilocks is the historical mother lode then get the rest of the M7 nations to pony up a cash advance to Helios. Surely they will recoup their money and then some. Whatever the workers are asking for is probably peanuts compared to the payout from the asteroid if it’s as valuable as they’re saying.

    Where was Miles during all of this?

    Something I'm puzzling out is the exchange between Dev and Ed, where he goes, "are we clear?" and the response is "Crystal." This is the final exchange in A Few Good Men between the Colonel, (Nicholson) and the JAG, (Cruz) before the JAG gets the Col. to go off. A nod to the movie? A foreshadowing? It's got to be there for a reason...

      Mission Impossible: Fallout has the same exchange. Maybe it's just a common response.

      @@imonymous In that instance I took it as a callout to Cruz's earlier role.
