Lessons In Leadership: The Sopranos - Silvio Dante

- Silvio Dante is a great study in how those who aren't in the top spot can still play a major role and have a giant impact on people and events around them.
By breaking down Silvio's personality we can get an insight into why great leaders take the time to cultivate relationships and work to strengthen their soft skills.
#silviodante #thesopranos #HBO
*Fun Fact:* Silvio Dante went down in history as New Jersey's greatest cheese enthusiast with an indecipherable poker face
Something about bellivaqua's sister's V.
"IM LOOSING MY FUCCIN BAWLS HERE!"
Your hair in the toilet water. Disgusting.
And this idiots playing hazel..
Provolone sales spiked the week after that episode
I like how Ralphie Cipharetto is giving us an in depth look at Silvio Dante's character.
Sounds kinda like him
LMAO! Funny because right before i read this i thought about the scene where he had to grab that little whoo'were from Ralphs house
Alright, kiddies, thats enough for tonight.
Speaking of 95 pounds 👉🏻😆
@@davidobrien8477 woww!!!.. lol, that's a guys wife..
“I’M JUST TELLING YOU HOW YOU’RE BEING FUCKIN PERCEIVED”, that line could be the entire summary of Silvio as a character
His delivery with that line was brilliant.
Please give me another indicator that Tony is the boss in pilot, besides the Junior line.
I don't dismiss is. You're not the only one saying that. I just want your theory, please!
@@yannick245 Tony’s not meant to be the boss in the pilot him and junior are both capos
@@leoncapra5501 That's what I'm saying!
Many people beg to differ. I don't know why but it's a common conception...
_(Also someone deleted his/her comment relating to that)_
WHOA!
Just when I thought I was out of Soprano clips & breakdowns, Lions & Legions pulls me back in.
Our true enemy has yet to reveal himself.
😭😭😭😭😭😭🤞🏾
@@ehhhhhhh6141 “Is it true? Michaellll...no...you fucking schifuzzo”
Sounds exactly like him!!!
hahahaah
One of my favorite lines is when Christopher is complaining abt tony blundetto being the favorite cousin. "Must I get into specifics" then the look sil gives Chris is so calm yet badass.
I’ll miss that frown! The man could do more meaningful variations with a frown than anyone-could be sad, thoughtful, relaxed, or downright violent. The man was perfect for the part! This was a great tribute 👍
You can still see that frown in Lillehammer, under a government name Giovanni "Johnny" Henriksen.
More scowl than frown.
The reason Silvio talks about Artie in the first episode as if he doesn't know him is because they changed several things from the pilot later, not because of Silvio thinking strategically.
Right, you can't consider the pilot canon.
Yeah Hesh is shown as like an enforcer who hangs at the Bing. Honestly I like to think of the Pilot as Tony, years later, looking back and misremembering a bunch of details that make him feel good.
Also, Tony is boss in the pilot, hence Uncle Junior’s comment “you may run north jersey but you don’t run me” or something like that. He also makes a comment that his wife sends him to the pork store for the gabagool, indicating he doesn’t hang around the store much.
@@avega2792 Many people have said that. I don't think that line by Uncle Jun confirms Tonys rank in the mob, just his status as the best earner with the most influence. _(Look at Tonys house)_
@@yannick245 he was definitely boss in the pilot. You have to consider that if Sopranos wasn’t picked up for TV it was going to be a standalone full length feature film. I’m guess that’s why Tony lives where he lives, he would have been boss in that movie. Of course that’s just my opinion.
Silvio is the perfect gangster in the show, loyal, fair, a mediator and competent.
Phil is the perfect gangster, because he’s none of those qualities, and thereby fits the bill for what a gangster is. Paulie too
That's why Silvio was a good consigliere. Junior should have made him his consigliere when junior was BOSS. There's nothing Tony would have been able to do about it. On the other hand Tony was a horrible BOSS, he should have just staid as CAPOREGIME.
There are very few things that Silvio did that made me think of him as a piece of shit. Yes he was one of the bad guys but I think his position put him where he wouldn't get his hands as dirty as other members.
Idk sil was moving those tiles behind Tony’s back for extra cash. Plus he wasn’t built for making decisions an enforcement. Showed perfectly after the pressure of being boss put him in the hospital. Love Silvio but no body in the show is perfect, nor where they supposed to be shown as. If anything, carmine was the perfect gangster. Smart, PATIENT, an definitely cold blooded but only when he needed to be an he knew how to control his emotions unlike literally everyone else tbh.
All I ever wanted was to carve out a little piece, and enjoy some grandkids.
Cheer me up babes
there he is in lillyhammer now
Silvio is the kinda man who knows that keeping his word is everything in his line of work and the respect that all of others show him tells you all you need to know about how good he is at keeping his word and that long ago he decided to keep his blood oath no matter the cost that is Silvio.
Silvio is the Scottie Pippen of the Jersey mob.
Thank you for the kind words
You got that one.
Can you elaborate, please?
@@robertbaratheon2193 Pippen always backed Jordan and helped him get there by playing his role.
And Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band
If Silvio’s time as boss went the way it did, I couldn’t imagine how someone like Paulie would have handled it. Wish Furio was in season 6 he would not only have fit that role much better, but would have played a big role in the war against New York too.
Riche Aprile would have driven a Lincoln up New York's a$$!
as someone on the autism spectrum i found this video both very interesting and very helpful. while i don't let my condition get in the way of my ability to socialize with my peers, the information contained within is both very easily understood and relatable.
Legend has it when he woke up from that coma he flipped and moved to Lillehammer, Norway under a government name Giovanni "Johnny" Henriksen.
This is probably the best, most in depth analysis of a character I’ve ever seen. I don’t even think the writers consciously thought about everything you mentioned about Sil. BRAVO!
The best thing about Sil is that he knew his position and played it. When he had to step up to boss, he almost couldn’t handle it. Better to know you’re an effective #2 than not know if you’re an effective #1.
One of my favorite characters on the show besides Tony. If I was in that life, I'd probably want Silvio's role instead of the boss's seat.
If you want a loyal person to go to battle with..... Tap on Silvio’s shoulder and MEASURES WILL BE TAKEN!!! 🤜🏾🔥🤛🏻
Paulie: Altieri wake is tonight so I called in a bomb scare
Silvio: Now that's over the top
Thought Chrissy said that?
@@diamondrattler7453 yeah Chrissy said that ,Paulie said it's altieri wake tonight
You clearly know a lot about leadership. Glad I found your channel
Thanks!
Silvio is like Spock to Tony’s Kirk. Cool, calm, competent, smart and can set in to lead at any time.
Well said .
Yes indeed
Sylvio was a great character: he understands everyone well, and was Tony’s most trusted ally, which showed on Tony’s face in the last episode.
Silvio was my favorite character on the show.
Silvio is a Consiglieri and he performs excellently in that role. He probably saved the Soprano family a lot more often than Tony did.
I know from my own experience that being the main advisor to the boss, assuming that you are factual, well informed, have a strategic pattern of thinking, diplomatic and don't have too big of an ego, can in effect make you more powerful than the boss.
I think that the key to the features of a good advisor is that one does not bear the full responsibility of final decisions being made. We all know how easy it can often be to give good advice to a person in a problematic situation, while it is a lot harder to follow your own advice and practices in a similar situation. The reason is that your own feelings, be they greed, anger, sadness, fear, jealousy and so on, are not involved or to a very small degree.
For sure, the boss usually gets most or all of the credit for good decisions, but he or she also gets most of the blame for bad decisions. If you are willing to give up the credit outwards for good decisions based on your advice, most bosses regardless of whether they are skilled at their work or not, will reward you for help with solving great problems.
One big problem though. Make sure that you in the long run have the official rank to give the best advice, because otherwise there will be jealousy. Also, be clear with the boss that he or she is the boss. Not you. That they must make the decisions and stand for them. Otherwise you will be blamed when things don't go as planned. Nor will you be left alone with your own work when the boss will ask for your hel with just about everything.
Best character of the series!
What right is right.
Sil not knowing about Artie early on was just a writing mistake, lol. I've heard the creators discuss it on Talking Sopranos. It's still your interpretation to make, but I think that one is a clear error on their part, given how early that scene is in the filming process. Other than that, solid.
@@MaxWhiteArabiLouisiana Yeah it's probably looking into some things too much, but since it's there I figured why not include it? That's part of the fun of the discussion it creates
Donald Pittman I think they just wanted to set up some exposition
So many intetesting and complex characters in the Sopranos. Cant wait to see the next breakdown.
The reason Sopranos was so popular and has a steady stream of content to this day is that the writing was top notch. Very little of what you see was not intentional. Even the smallest details and throw away lines were meticulously written. Truly a masterpiece.
Silvio Dante is one of my spirit animals.
I would've flipped to New York, Tony thinks that the world revolves around him when obviously it doesn't. Maybe it's just the way that most bosses are, but still.
That’s why you wouldn’t last 2 minutes in the mob or any other high pressure industry.
@@joeyc8622 Plot twist, in real life I already do (high pressure industry) though it's not much fun.
@@joeyc8622 I’m sure you’d make it Joey 😂😂
Silvio is very loyal and not a rat who will run to new York and sell his friend out
Even Paulie knew not to trust New York
Very interesting and well done. Silvio is a fascinating and complex character. SVC nails the part.
I'd LOVE to see more leadership break downs of Soprano characters!
Any requests?
@@LionsandLegions Johnny Sack would be my first pick (besides Tony) but really any of the prominent characters would make for a great video.
@@LionsandLegions Tony Soprano especially, an analysis of how not to be a leader with the character Junior Soprano, and probably John Sac and Jackie Aprile if you want too as well but the character has little screen time
@@matthewmoltisante3221 hey junior was a real gangster and Tony never had the makings of a varsity athlete
Holy shit im so happy you're doing sopranos videos too! great content s always.
As someone who is something of a number 2 in my own team, this speaks to me. Though I've never had to whack anyone. Great analysis!
Sil was a great advisor, he uses his position next to Tony to move pieces. He has all the power as Tony but almost no responsibility. Sil wasn't stupid. Tony and sil needed each other. I'm sure sil was a good reason why he moved up so quick into a capo position.
Silvio Dante = If stay in ya lane was a fictional mobster.
Funny because everyone on that show had a hard time with that. It was the reason for most of the conflicts
I’d argue Sil asking if Tony went to school with Artie is that their backstories weren’t entirely fleshed out. Remember Gino from the pastry shop in season two became Vito, the top earner in the family who’s death is a major catalyst in the NJ/NYC war.
He was my favorite character in the show he did so well he slayed this character. Idk if anyone else notice but the hairpice changes like in season 5 and 6 its weird I realized this but I know it is .
HE DOES 1 ON 1 COACHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Silvio only relates information when he already knows the outcome or decision. When he doesn't, he lays back and let's things happen around him. He knows his limitations is to not get ahead of himself because he can't handle pressure.
The perfect position to be in. Not so low that you have to eat shit all the time, but no so high that you have to deal with the real bs. Silvio's my favorite character of the series.
When Silvio asked tony if him and Artie were friends, it was because the WRITERS hadn’t crystallised their characters - not because Silvio was engineering the conversation
The script for this narrative is excellent. Something pinged a memory of advice my estranged shared, partly from her long experience as a family law attorney and also her extraordinary innate insight. The topic was generally how well Silvio handled confidential information involving others in a group. She said that if you have a friendship with a married couple, you listen and DO NOT opine about the other person...... as much as you actually intend "moral support", anything and everything you say will result in loss of BOTH friends. People in a corner will weaponize your "confidential" words. Ears open, mouth shut.
Silvio had the makings of a varsity athlete
Love your content dude, pro yup the good work! It is greatly appreciated!
Silvo Dante is best as #2 guy. Providing strategies, planning, giving advice to Tony Soprano. But Silvo is terrible at #1 as stress have his allergies flare up, soldiers question him and he is bewildered with host of leadership responsibilities.
I’ve seen all yr sopranos videos. Really good. It’s good to have these kinds of things broken down in these ways that don’t need to go into the exhausting over use of alpha/beta etc terms and concepts, ie only lame manosphere types seem to get into practical advice u can take from the show so I’m glad a non-incel like this channel took up the task!
Does borko know about this?
Tony: All Due Respect you got no f**kin idea what it’s like to be number 1
Silvio learned it while Tony was in a coma. Though Silvio didn’t do a bad job while in charge it was too much stress and pressure for him and he had a panic attack that caused a asthma attack
Can’t wait for the Paulie episode
You are going to be fucking huge bro, so much game on this channel, like Robert Greene levels of game
Great video. Exactly what I was looking for.
Yeah whoever makes these videos is a legend. You saving and elevating lives

Absolutely love watching him lose his mind
I’m putting provolone in my socks tonight.
strong stuff :) Reminds me of my last 3-month struggle with my boss to get a project through and how it all turned out a net positive after all. I'd have loved for some further deliberations on the role of the ego, although many of it was there implicitely (which is not easy to do so kudos).
This video is absolutely fantastic. I watched it when it came out and I'm back a month later because I find the premise interesting and the presentation perfect. Well done!
Man I love this content 'Best of the Best' 👌👌👌
If Tony ever had a best friend it would be Silvio. The loyalty he showed Tony was greater than any character in the show.
This channel having only 5k subs shows quality ain’t shit in the UA-cam game. This and the wire series are excellent I hope you keep this up.
Love Silvio!!!!
Love all your videos! Please make more
Can't wait until you do Paulie Walnuts 👏👏👏👍never thought of the trust bank wow

Cannot be unseen hahaha
This narrator is well spoken. I have a bad feeling by the end of the video I’m going to be coerced into buying a toaster or something I don’t want/need.
I’d like to see a documentary about how much time in the makeup chair Stevie VZ spent having that hairpiece applied. Love the rare couple of scenes where his coif is awry.
He was also genuine!!! That's also necessary to being successful at anything!!!
Pleeeease do Johnny Sac or Phil Leotardo :) . I love their characters!
Also my favorite Sopranos character: Little Carmine :* :* :*
Glad I found this channel. Please do more soprano leadership videos
I think you're overthinking the bit where he tells him about Artie's restaurant, it was the pilot and they hadn't established the characters relationships yet. Silvio probably wasn't considered a childhood friend of Tony's in the plot at that point.
Right on Sir! I've watched the series more than I care to mention; Silvio Has always been one of my favourite characters. It's interesting, and telling that he was originally considered to take over the reins of Family head, over Tony, before Aprille died of cancer. It fits his character and its arc. Very Interesting Character. Oh...I'm a Musician and the song a semi nude Gloria loves and dances to, for Tony, was written by Silvio- i.e. Steven Van Zandt, - and Performed by his band, The Lost Boys - it's on UA-cam, I recognised it - check it out. As Gloria says... "I Love It." "I'm the monkey that you've always been afraid of..." Great Rock n' Roll.
Silvio had encyclopedic knowledge about many things
I've always really liked these bro.Keep hustling. You The Man!
Can you do an analysis of the whole crew? I would love to hear your perspective. Peace 🦋🌻
Like all your videos so far, can't wait until you get to Christopher "the boss' son" Moltisanti - it will be a very cathartic listen.
Lol good comparison

I dont know about the rest of you Sopranos, but I cant wait for them to finally release 'The Many Saints of Newark' as we will see a young Silvio Manfred Dante.
Very good video!!
He was one of the few that Tony hardly ever fought with. One of my favorite characters. He was very devoted.
"Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in"
Moving on to Sopranos now?? Was HBO the only premium channel you had growing up too? I'm SUPER BIASED towards HBO series!
Just be patient. Add a suggestion and let's see what's next
@@VividManify I'm not knocking him or anything, I love these vids! The Wire and Sopranos are 3 of my fav shows ever! I only had HBO so just saying I'm biased in that I will ALWAYS give HBO series a chance but other networks series I am immediately hesitant
How about Arnold Rothstein in "Boardwalk Empire"
@@thebettingpublicsportsshow hell yeah!! Then for a good contrast, a vid on Gyp Rosetti! Haha terrible boss but prob my fav character from the whole series!
Nah, I think it's just the strength of the shows. Oz, The Sopranos, The Wire (and The Corner), Boardwalk Empire, Treme, Curb Your Enthusiasm, more cult/less popular but still impactful shows like True Blood, Six Feet Under, Big Love, Deadwood, Eastbound And Down, Carnival, True Detectives, etc, current hits like Westworld, Watchmen, etc, just some of the best shows that've been made were HBO shows, and I got no channel bias lol
Other channels/networks have definitely put out some strong shows and movies, but it's hard to stack any of em against those shows and lost did so later on.
Even shows like Sex And The City were in a lotta ways groundbreaking and game changing. And they've long been putting out some of the best made for TV movies and miniseries of all time.
They've been willing to take some risks others wouldn't touch and draw great actors, writers, producers, and directors and had the funds to back ambitious visions. I don't think the quality of the acting, writing, producing and directing can be understated either. And it shows by how many people have acting, writing, producing, or directing credits on 2-3+ of these shows, especially between Oz, Sopranos, The Wire, Treme, and Boardwalk Empire.
And that's not at all to say HBO hasn't put out some trash through the years or really screwed up great shows. I've never seen it but nobody I know likes the way they did Game of Thrones, I was very unhappy with the way they decided to cut Boardwalk Empire short by 2 or so seasons and had that weird final season the way they did which skipped years and events that woulda been amazing to see play out. It's not all hits, but when they do they hit hard lol Either way I stand by Showtime's Dexter being a great show that belongs among the best and that without Oz there may have never been a Sopranos 💯
Excellent analysis
There are some exceptions to this. When you say he tells Tony what he needs to hear, remember the time Tony was trying to talk himself into betting the 100K on a football game that he was going to give to Vito Jr and his mom? Even Christopher had a look of disapproval but Silvio encouraged it
if this had some edits from different scene I'd enjoy it even more
A lot of the discrepancies from season one pilot are because they weren't sure if it was gonna get picked up and their was a huge gap before they resumed filming. Thats why that fist episode feels like a cartoon and there are so many continuity errors and plot wholes. They didn't know what they were gonna do with the character just yet. When we are first introduced to Sil at Centannis no one even acts like they know who he is.
We need to talk about Silvios wig
This guy......always with the scenarios. 😁😁
My prayers have been answered
It's funny how he was always messing around with stuff...Fixing, or reading cleaning books......"Who left the cap off the super glue?!"
Fantastic video, thank you UA-cam algorithm! Off topic, do you have a Chicago accent? You've a very good narrator's voice!
Thank you! Northern Wisconsin to be exact!
I loved how Chase rocked viewers to sleep and then slapped them with cold reality. Sylvio executing Adrianna was a perfect example. Yes he enjoyed a nice steak later and slept like a baby that night.
The older i get I realize Tony is a terrible boss...he is not a great leader....tony should have read how to influence ppl and win friends
I started to hate Tony as the show ended
Terrible boss! Extremely Selfish and let people run wild, he had very little control on a lot situations!
@@seansmith7462 in my opinion, and that of others, we were supposed to
That's a fact Tony was a terrible boss. He really didn't want to be boss.
Tony was a great boss for a while. Around season 4 is when his downfall started, then by season 6 he was a complete mess.
Great video. But PLEASE, the g in the word consigliere is silent.
