@theramplocal That episode Chasing It was worse we saw out of Tony gambled the money away that he was gonna give Marie for Vito Jr and didn't want to pay Hesh when he owned him money
I've said it before, I'll say it again, till the cows come home. Little Steven, Miami Steve, spent the previous 25 years, touring with arguably the best rock band in the history, then migrates across the entertainment industry into one of the most iconic roles in television, flawlessly. Truly one of the greats. His work to be cherished for decades.
I've seen Springsteen 15 times, 14 with the E Street Band. I've seen Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, formed by Steve Van Zandt about five or six times. I've seen Bon Jovi, heavily influenced by Springsteen and the Jukes, four times. They are the best bands I've seen. But the best single show I've seen is Little Steven (Van Zandt) and the Disciples of Soul about seven years ago. The theater was a quarter-to-half full, and many of us got free tickets, but he played like it was sold out.
That bit always made me sad. Obviously a big part of the show is that the mob doesn't have any real honor, but if it was made up of guys like Silvio, who operated in a certain professional manner, it would at least follow it's own rules. Bobby gets injured in the line of duty and Tony gets all pissy about it, even though Bobby ensured Tone would get the envelope via Carlo. That's probably part of why Carlo snitched tbh, and you can see it on Sil's face. "If the boss of the family thinks like this, why should any of us care?"
I found Silvio's on screen & SVZ's Real Life Wife to be the most alluring, drama-free and the best significant other of the entire cast most comfortable with that life. She certainly helped with his reserved demeanor.
He's a Riker, a Trotsky. An administrator, man of action, man of the troops, maintains a balance between truths and egos. Definitely the perfect middle management, as you said
I can imagine that the italian patriotism was written for Paulie, you can see glipmses of it in the coffee shop bit with Big Pus. "Italians, how we miss out on this, Cappucino, Americano, we invented this stuff"
Let's define "bad." Took care of the "Adriana problem." Told one of the dancers he was exploiting: "Until you pay me what you owe me, that little shaved twat belongs to me."
Nice comprehensive analysis. Syl’s an old fashioned mobster in the mode of Neil Dellacroce, good at overseeing the traditional blue collar rackets, but not an earner on the level of Ralph or having the vision for something like Webistics. He’s also shrewd in withholding his opinions until others have spoken, as in the matter of Vito’s adverse pharmaceutical reaction. What an encore career for Little Steven.
@@holidaybro4702 Oh yeah! It's great. It's basically "Silvio Dante ends up in the witness protection program and chooses Norway." Then he meets a bunch of Norwegians, starts a club, bada boom, bada bing!
I think the Columbus Day thing perfectly suited Sil. We know very little about the guy, his opinions and here were see him saying “I’m gonna take action here”… i think very interesting add on to the character
I thought Sil worked for it too. Sure, Paulie was written for it, but it's such an obvious choice for that type of episode. Paulie getting mad, then missing his 'action' gambling. It being Sil adds a layer, and it becomes funnier because it's consistent with the fact we know Sil turns into an asshole when gambling is involved so of course whatever anger he got would be overriden at the casino lmao
This is easily one of your best essays. Your insights into Silvio's strengths and weakness demonstrate incredible attention to detail. I've already watched the whole show twice. The observation where you point out Silvio's ability to be both vague and direct, saying exactly what he needs to say to every situation is the type of thing that gets me longing for a third pass at the show. I never considered that in the conversation between Tony and Sil after the floor tile fiasco, Sil made it clear that passing over Patsy was a bad move. You really have the gift of analyzing literature.
What a lot of people seem to miss when describing Silvio as a "cartoonish" caricature, is that Van Zandt actually played Silvio a lot more subdued in the first season & really only started being more exaggerated/animated in the following seasons.
True, though the first seasons of classic shows nearly always have a slightly different vibe than those thereafter. They’re still figuring out the details. True of countless comedies and dramas.
Damn that's disappointing to hear lol, my facial expression rarely changes unless I'm in conversation. Really it's because I'm just chilling, keeping a level head
I was going to say Artie, but he even F 'ed up and screwed over Tony a few times. Silvio, just the one time w the tiles, and he made his point. So I agree 100%, Silvio always had Tony's best interest as the boss
@theramplocal friends do bad things sometimes. I still think Artie is Tony's true friend...he even says "What about Artie?!" when Carmella doesn't have any real friends. Artie has squandered money from Tony and pointed a gun at him and still Tony never hurt him.
Chase being a huge music fan and a drummer loved Van Zandt’s music, as he said in a commentary for the episode where ‘Precious’ by The Pretenders is playing (like most used likely his choice), ‘I queued up to buy that album on the day it came out……I wasn’t a kid, I was 32 years old’. So that might have been an influence in getting Van Zander, with the meta touch of one of his tracks (as a favorite of Gloria as she writhes on top on Tony), playing with the volume turned up by her.
Silvio was one of my favorite character in the Sopranos lol, him and Paulie were so well acted. Truly a legendary cast all around for the Sopranos tbh.
Silvio was perfect really, he's the consigliere. He doesn't stir shit up, he's not a part of drama, he doesn't talk unless there's something to be said and he called anyone out. Even the boss (alone behind closed doors of course) when Tony needed to hear something out that he didn't particularly wanna hear. He didn't suck up to anybody. He's the soul of the crew. The boss's "jiminy cricket."
don't forget the scene where he goes to "collect" Tracee from Ralphie's house. He keeps his cool inside the house of another wise guy, but as soon as she shows him attitude, just outside, he beats her pretty hard
Sil was like the logical calm anchor of the crew. No fuss, no drama and he was lethal without hesitation or complaint the instant it was required. The others all had issues or complications inevitably betraying or messing up something. I think Sil was also the only one not to end up falling out with Tony along the way too.
Excellent analysis of my favorite character of The Sopranos. Personally, I like the fact that Silvio is an enigma, I like that there's a little mystique surrounding his character and it suits what his position in the family is, too. The consigliere position is one that is a little mysterious and shadowy since their job is to advise the boss and administration of the family and to keep their ear to the ground as far as what's happening on the street with different factions and families. It's also not uncommon for them to have strong ties to the legitimate world as well as be the liaison with other families.
Silvio was a brilliant character. There were so many moments when I expected him to interject, only to stay silent and wait for Tony to ask him what he had to say. He knew how to play his environment, but not in the same way Paulie navigated it.

Sil's facial expressions alone were hilarious. At the same time, he was incredibly capable and lethal. I loved that scene early on where Paulie and Sil were roughing up Ariel at his hotel, and Ariel suddenly got the better of Paulie who yelled for Sil. Out of nowhere Sil pulls a wooden mallet or meat tenderizer and that takes care of that. Cool weapon. Not a knife, not a gun. Very imaginative weapon to carry.
Sil’s best scene, IMO, is when Tony tells him that Richie is looking to replace him. First, Sil’s reaction is controlled anger; he’s pissed, but he doesn’t fly off the handle because, given Richie’s attitude, he knew that this was always a possibility. Then, when Tony asks his advice, Sil takes a moment to think things through, even distancing himself from Tony for a moment, then comes back and says “I genuinely don’t think there’s anything to gain by keeping him around,” essentially telling him that Richie should be whacked. But note that he never actually says it; that’s because he knows that someone could be listening in…
4:38 don’t forget about Vito’s wacky mix up of the medications that caused him to catch not pitch, and make him develop an affinity for Leather Hats, Vests, and Assless Chaps
Yea I think it's a great point, the reason he's the most underdeveloped character in the mob is exactly so we see him as the best succesor for Don. We haven't gotten the chance to see any flaws, but also we've seen enough of him to the point were we can start saying, maybe he just don't got that many, or any.
I thought Silvio was one of the more memorable characters. He was intelligent, calculating, diligent, ruthless, efficient, loyal, competent, and most importantly self-aware. He understood his limits. What more could you ask for in your advisor and right hand?
He looked and acted the part of the wise sage leading Tony, but why were so many mistakes made and why did he become so distant and removed from Tony's decision making process? He wasn't carrying enough of the weight that Tony did, evident by him abusing his inhaler and ending up in the hospital once the weight was passed to him. He was there to let Tony know how things would look or what the other guys would think, like a union representative. But Tony was alone with the pressure of making money and dealing with the law.

Out of nowhere Sil pulls a wooden mallet or meat tenderizer and that takes care of that. Cool weapon. Not a knife, not a gun. Very imaginative weapon to carry.
My favorite character
Sil’s best scene, IMO, is when Tony tells him that Richie is looking to replace him. First, Sil’s reaction is controlled anger; he’s pissed, but he doesn’t fly off the handle because, given Richie’s attitude, he knew that this was always a possibility. Then, when Tony asks his advice, Sil takes a moment to think things through, even distancing himself from Tony for a moment, then comes back and says “I genuinely don’t think there’s anything to gain by keeping him around,” essentially telling him that Richie should be whacked. But note that he never actually says it; that’s because he knows that someone could be listening in…
Whenever I think I’m over the Sopranos, they pull me back in!
Here's why Silvio was my favorite. He's fair. Adrianna was a rat, the stripper owned him money, and Bert was about to kill Tony, so Sil is the best!
I loved the Columbus parade episode. That scene Silvio is like “don’t act like we don’t give em a bunch of things to make up for dat!”😂😂😂
Being out in the open w/o muscle was crazy for Sil and Bobby
Great analysis as usual
