  • These old synths are really powerful but a nightmare to program manually, well, you cant even program the TX7 using the unit alone.
Controlling them using Dexed and Ableton allows you to do stuff that would have been very difficult to do when these units were new.
You can download Dexed for free here

Dexed is a pretty good emulation of the original machines, so still worth downloading if you do not have the original machines.

To answer to @mastasableful comment : yes, it works with dx7 too.... BUT... Not the same parameters on the DX7 to activate MIDI/SYSEX :
    1/ Power on the DX7
2/ Click on "Function" and number "8"
3/ "MIDI Ch Info : ON" (instead of "OFF")
4/ "MIDI Sy Info: ON" (instead of "OFF")
THEN MIDI send from Dexed to DX7 with SYSEX is working on 😉

Thank you for this video! So this only works with a MIDI interface? I'm using a TX7, a Roland Duo-Capture sound card and a Mac mini.

Yes, you do need a MIDI interface, There are some good simple ones, MIDI to USB cables you can order off Amazon, for about £15. They work great. I have bought some of the very cheapest ones, for only few pounds in the past, but they do not seem to work well for sending MIDI Controll changes and Sysex. Here is one of the models I use www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0BBMG43JZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

@lowPassenger thanks for the reply, turns out my Roland Duo-Capture sound card also works as a MIDI interface so a simple MIDI OUT from the Duo-Capture into the MIDI IN of my TX7 did the trick ! So now I'm sending MIDI data from Dexed to my TX7, but I wonder if I can also send MIDI data from my TX7 to Dexed to for example edit a patch that's already on programmed on my TX7?

@@TheFellowPassenger another problem I'm facing: after sending a patch from DEXED to my TX7, as soon as I restart my TX7 the patch has disappeared. I turned the memory protect OFF as instructed in another video I saw. Is there anything else I need to do to permanently save that patch into my TX7? The manual isn't very helpful.

Does this also apply for Reaper?

I have never used Reaper, but if it can use VST plugins, then I would assume it works fine.
