  • Can a total computer noob use Linux? Ubuntu is a popular distro for beginners however what happens when you throw a computer illiterate non-linux user into it. Check out this video to see the results!
Diana started off barely knowing how to use a computer but now after trying over 70 different operating systems she has become quite competent within a huge variety of desktop environments.
Ben on the other hand is even worse than Diana was when she first started. Each task even on his native Mac computer is a struggle for him.
Note that Ubuntu 14.10 isn't much of a change from the previous version however big changes are coming soon for Ubuntu with MIR display server replacing Xorg server and X Window display, the introduction of Unity 8 and the move to systemd
More info on Ubuntu here: en.wikipedia.or...
    Tasks Given:
    1. Log in
    2. What time is it?
    3. Display the date with the time
    4. Write, save, open and delete a text document.
    5. Browse the internet
    6. Add a program to the dock
    7. Calculate 54 x 5.
    8. Change the Desktop background
    9. Change the size of the dock
    10. Draw a picture with a program from the Ubuntu Software Centre
    11. Turn off the computer
The mother in this video uses Windows 8.0 (2012) as her main os however she has installed the classic shell due to her Metro Hate. Would you like to see her try out Linux, Mac, Windows or other operating systems through history such as FenOS (2014)? Then give your suggestions in the comments section. Give this video lots of likes, views, favorites and comments if you want my mum to try out other operating systems. I am open to any operating system suggestions you give especially if these videos go semi-viral (over 100,000 views). This channel is dedicated to me "introducing" people (mum, dad, me) to different operating systems they have never used before and leaving them to suffer in confusion struggling to do anything in an unknown computer environment... or see if these other operating systems are better than Microsoft Windows.
The father in this video uses Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite‎ on an early 2009 macbook white 13 inch. He only uses his computer to read emails and watch youtube videos. He doesn't know the first thing about operating systems.

His earlier videos were considerably better productions IMNSHO.

They can't put the word underneath the icon because there is no universal language everybody speaks. If it said "computer", any English speaking person could read it. But a Japanese speaking person couldn't because the word would be "コンピュウタア". So they have to use visual styles to indicate meaning because pictures are universally understood by all

I decided to try Ubuntu after watching this video and three days later, I pretty much love it. What really kills the experience is the lack of programs and the lack for abstraction. For example, if we have a microwave and we hit a button on it to cook something, it just works right? That's how Windows is, you run a setup program to install a driver with out having to worry about what's actually going on. In Linux, I found this to not be true in some cases, where you have to basically type commands into the terminal to properly configure the drivers. While this may seem cool, geeky and safer in a way it is more dangerous for the general consumer attempting to do it because typing in the wrong command could render the OS useless as I found out myself installing certain drivers. Ubuntu is moving in the right direction with the software center but we need more abstraction in this OS, the user doesn't need to know the innards of the program to be able to make use of it, it should simply just work and the program with this is, there seems to be no standard and no portability at all across distros! What works on one system may not even work on another! The things I did like where the nice beautiful interface, big clear beautiful fonts and over all a friendly community but this OS still has a long way to go before it becomes mature enough that it's "more out there" I'm surprised that it isn't after all these years. Ubuntu used about 500mb of ram with steam running and browsing while Windows itself chews up 1.6 Gigabytes doing this or just 800mb while idle. However, I did notice that Windows is king when it comes to drivers and response time while Ubuntu was laggy (possibly because I configured it improperly) My final verdict is, while it does look more beautiful, I couldn't use it as my main OS. I am familiar with programming in the WinAPI for the last several years and using Linux made me feel like a complete novice. It shouldn't take someone several hours, trial and error or several OS re-installs to properly install proprietary drivers ... I didn't give up on it completely tho, so I emptied one of my back up drives and installed Ubuntu on it, this way should Windows become unstable, I can at least still have Linux as a back up to get simple things done thanks to a very small foot print. Linux was able to read/write into my backup NTFS partitioned drive I use for Windows. However, the Linux installation doesn't show up at all under Windows because Windows can't read the ext4 partition.

    • @theroundduckman
      @theroundduckman 9 років тому +2

You just type in drivers, click on "additional drivers" (or proprietary drivers) and install the drivers there. People must be misguiding you by telling you to use the terminal. You use that graphical tool.
I do think the terminal on Linux is way easier than Windows's command prompt, though, I mean you can go "sudo apt-get install firefox" and BAM!!! Firefox. :D

This is really great. Most Ubuntu demo videos are not suitable for a first time user, this one does because it shows it's possible to find stuff, and it does so quite slowly (others just take you through all the features in 60 seconds, or worse - detail all technical stuff in 50 minutes...:). It is also a great lesson for me as a UX expert, when we plan software we take a lot of things for granted, and a noob may not understand. Are Ubuntu users most likely to use a spreadsheet ? etc. Btw, the save icon is a well known dilemma, especially in cases where you have different save options. Cool editing and funny stuff there as well. Nice one.

Awesome concept for a video. All Linux OS developers looking to gain mainstream acceptance should watch this. Trying to help my parents use Windows can be tough. Things that you'd assume are intuitive are clearly not for some people. After a ransomwear attack I seriously considered getting them to switch to Linux, maybe Mint, but it's still not quite at the level where you can set it and forget it. I remember my first year or two on Linux, pulling my hair out trying to get a printer to work, or trying to figure out a damn tarball - it was infuriating. First impressions are make or break for most people, so this honest first time appraisal of the system is really revealing. Also props to your parents for going along with this. Be patient with them, remember, they spent months teaching you how to s#¡±. In the future, I'd like to see them try out Elementary OS given its focus on simplicity.

Okay let me just start this comment of by saying that i love this youtube channel and that i like the improvements you guys have made to the channel.
However what i am seeing is that now you guys are just taking a look at operating systems you have already looked at and just let you father trying them out. I mean, the channel has lost it's point. It was about testing operating systems and recording a reaction from your mother. Now it's just the same operating systems with just dad. No offense to your father it's just that don't think he should be doing the same thing as your mother. Maybe give him other tasks and completely different operating systems.
Would like to see this comment being discussed in a comment show if you guys are planning to do those video's again.

      @gabeplaysgames5774 8 років тому

+scoutchorton You can do a LOOOOOT more with Windows then you can with Linux. You can find everything for free on Windows. The only thing you can do on Linux that you can't do on Windows is edit the code of the os itself, which I'm not even sure why you'd even want to do that since Windows is so customize able as it is. You can barely download any games on Linux. Like seriously, there is like barely any games playable on it. I mean, I guess Linux is free so there's that. But why would you even want to buy a new OS in the first place, pretty much all computers come with either Windows or Mac, unless your computer is custom made. And if you did custom make you're computer it's most likely for gaming, and again Linux is horrible for gaming. I can sorta understand putting up an argument over Mac vs Windows, but Linux really doesn't stand a chance against either of them.

Ben's suggestions are valuable. I mean OS developers should look into how the UI can be made as user friendly as possible for everyone. It would be logical for anyone new to look into Time and Date to change date settings rather than Clock. Even an experienced user would do that for a second then quickly switch to the next tab available. Also with the Save word under the icon in Writer, what's wrong with that? At least the most common icons could have that so that new users don't have travel navigating. This is good feedback to even expand the user base and make it usable for everyone.

4:09 In real life, Ubuntu is even more confusing. Here, dad minimizes a window. "Where has it gone?". Son gives a huge hint : one of the icons in the task bar has something different from the others... => One laugh, and the problem is solved. It took me several *days* to notice the tiny triangles next to the running programs. One thing I like in windows is that the task bar is actually a task bar of current tasks : shows what tasks are running now. It's not a catalog of what you may or may not want to do or buy. So I was completely lost on Ubuntu, even though I used many other OS's. On Windows if the taskbar isn't informative enough, you go to the task manager, with ctrl-alt-del (or other shortcuts). My Ubuntu was in french, and in both french and english, my keywords to look for a "task manager" equivalent returned nothing (it's "system monitor"). Windows 8 got a lot of hate for deleting the start menu. Ubuntu is really asking for hate. My keywords today in youtube : "Ubuntu FAIL"

If you don't already know, Ubuntu and other Linux distros have "Desktop Environments" which are all different. The one in the video is called "Unity" (completely different from Unity3D engine).
Overall, the Unity Desktop Environment get a lot of hate and criticism from Ubuntu users themselves :b
If you want Ubuntu to look like Windows, I'd suggest installing the Cinnamon Desktop Environment, since it actually has a "taskbar" as one would call it. (Although you'd still have to use "system monitor" as a replacement for task manager)
As for the little triangles next to the programs in the Unity DE, I'd bet you'd totally notice them faster if you were a Mac user

There is already a presentation program named Presentations. It was original created by SSI (Software Systems International) which became WordPerfect Corp now owned by Corel Corp. It dates back to DrawPerfect and was first released as WordPerfect Presentations for Dos in 1993. So LibreOffice could not use that name for it's version as Presentations is a Trademarked name.

We've now finally have found another Dad Tries Out video! :)
We all agree that Ben is very computer illiterate but Ubuntu has most certainly helped him with computing and using the computer.
After watching this video I feel like switching to Ubuntu and scrapping my experience with Windows 8.1
I really think Ubuntu should be more popular!
What do you think about Ubuntu and this video?

Hold on before you try to install Ubuntu. Is your PC pre installed with Windows 8 or 8.1? Or is it an older OS? It's because starting with preinstalled Windows 8 PCs, the BIOS is replaced by UEFI. It makes Linux installation harder and longer (because you know how Microsoft is), so I recommend searching up the steps to do it with preinstalled Windows 8 and 8.1 PCs so you don't go nuts at Linux.

TheYellowPolarBear I'm sorry that Microsoft does these stupid things, try searching on ebay or Amazon for a Windows 7 PC so you can install Ubuntu on it, or search on those same sites to find a computer with Ubuntu 14.04 (not 12.04) preinstalled. Hopefully that helps. :)

Linux was created in 1990s. Think of it. In a very small amount of time, (31 years), Linux has came from an OS with nothing but a black screen and it's users have to remember very commands to do even simple tasks, to an os with a window manager and desktop environment, ad thoushads of people are contributing on it like volunteers, and with thousands of versions to pick and choose from. (You can evern create your own distro). Quite a large amount of achievement for 31 years.

Hi Guys, I'm a 51yo and I'm a new using Ubuntu and I like it very much and for the same reason you explained on your video "it's much easier to learn on how to use it correctly no much hassle. I still miss a few windows Microsoft features but is getting easy and I can tell that I can use something similar from Ubuntu software's and partners and all for free. Thanks for your funny and instructive video with simple instructions for people like us... now I'm more comfortable navigating the internet using Ubuntu 14.04 or so.
