- Arch Linux is definitely not a distro for noobs and Diana originally rated it as the worst Linux distro EVER! But when you know how to use it you can quickly create whatever computer setup you desire. It has an awesome package manager which allows you to remove, download and install desktop environments, window managers and software with ease. Now Diana believes Arch Linux is the best operating system in the world that everyone should be using.

The mother in this video uses Windows XP (2001) as her main OS dual booted with Elementary OS (a fast Linux distro). Would you like to see her try out Linux, Mac, Windows or other operating systems through history such as Ubuntu Satanic Edition 666.8 (2010)? Then give your suggestions in the comments section. Give this video lots of likes, views, favorites and comments if you want my mum to try out other operating systems. I am open to any operating system suggestions you give especially if these videos go semi-viral (over 100,000 views). This channel is dedicated to me "introducing" people (mum, dad, me) to different operating systems they have never used before and leaving them to suffer in confusion struggling to do anything in an unknown computer environment... or see if these other operating systems are better than Microsoft Windows.
It's funny how Diana calls it The "Diana Operating System" a.k.a DOS.
***** How about "Perfect Diana Operating System", or P-DOS for short! Not Diana's exact words, but still funny.
***** He does it for UA-cam purposes.
Saurabh Khatiwada That is funny
I didn't catch that one the first time around.
Not dos Arch Linux this is not dos seriously
I need a break from doing these. I haven't spent a single weekend this year relaxing, I only edit these videos and its driving me a little nuts.
take. break m8 you desrve it :)

Young man, you are inspiring! I've been using linux since the early 90s (when we had to compile everything), but I am yet to convert anybody. You have a bright future in training or education. Your mom is incredibly open minded, and she surely raised a wonderful son. Congratulations!
I am 12 I currently use elementary OS but am going to dual boot arch I tried to install unbuntu on my mums computer but she hated it and I had to reinstall windows :p
Amrath Lol People don't like changing what they are familiar with, that's why KDE desktop is so appealing to many people... it looks a lot like Windows. Ubuntu's Unity desktop is a big change for most people, so they often get discouraged before they even test it out properly. BTW... it's good to duel boot when testing (even better as live CD) because it sucks to have to re-install an operating system (especially if you have to pay for it... like I did with Windows 8.1... needed Photoshop for work; but I'm really missing linux!)
Amrath Lol Hating Ubuntu is not a bad thing, I liked it when I was twelve though but I am 18 so it was not shit back then
Mosco Monster Inkscape.
its a while since this thread haha
i now have my own laptop with eos freya on :D
It would be great a video about Mum installing Gentoo.
JlXip longest youtube video ever, since you compile everything from source...
Nah. Arch is better. Gentoo is a forever unfinished allegro.
JlXip Gentoo is unfinished :)
@Dmitriy Getman and you have to merge the package manager and install a desktop
@@LeoDutraBR indeed. Arch is beatufull. Gentoo is not bad for kernel level dev. But arch is just beatifull.
lol, sudo su. Someone doesn't like typing sudo everytime.

I mean when you're doing first time setup, who would?
It's 2024. Why am I still using the keyboard for everything
Lol she raised a good kid.
Michael Magill I couldn't agree more. He seems like a nice kid. I've never met him in person, I would like too. the only thing is, 'm a tech guy and a outdoors guy. We would get along well.

Phil: "You just type in startx. As one word."

You're a good teacher too, starting from the basics. To be able to see the differences in features between packages is the best way for newcomers to understand and appreciate them. Kudos!
I'm not trying to be a jerk. But, it is imperative for me to state that Diana is absolutely breathtaking. :-)
+TheRangeControl You're not alone. About 70+% of OSFirstTimer subscribers think that as well!
Linux distros are booted directly from the usb or harddrive while other os's are usually emulated with VMware.

+IknowrealTV
The "Diana Perfect OS" is just Arch Linux with KDE on top. If you want it, just search up "how to install arch linux with kde". It's not even it's own OS.
LOL
I'm from 4 years later. I ask you, a slightly overwhelming question..
*_Have you found it..?_*
(UA-cam's sad, messed up, idea of 4 years. Could be right, could be so... So wrong)
I'm glad you have left both a positive and negative comment. I'll eventually add annotations explaining those things you explained.
I learned more about Arch watching this video compared to hours banging my head against the Wiki trying it out.
Very clear explanation!
I love how she says "I think [Arch Linux] is gong to be the easiest operating system to use."
You could just do "sudo pacman -S (your program)".
Wow you must be some kind of genius.
Andrew Forpes Nope. I'm just some tech expert.
he did, he was responding with a sarcastic tone.
*Andrew Forpes* u are dumb
I think Desktop Environments are more akin to an OS than the kernal they run on. When I say I prefer Windows over OSX, I usually am refering to the aestheics or how programs run on it, the first is soley GUI the other has some what to do with the kernal, but more to do with software support. Gnome 3 is very different to Unity, Unity is very different to KDE, xfce, LXDE, Pantheon, Deepin, and so forth. In my mind are all different OSes, which are attempting to retell the desktop metaphor in a different way.
"Get rid of it. This is my operating system...". You're goddamn right.
Nice video. As a side note, ctrl+z doesn't "fully stop" a program. It simply stops the process from receiving or producing output - essentially, it is detached from the forefround. You can reattach it to the foreground by typing `fg %1` (where 1 is the number of the process, which you can see by typing `jobs`).
In order to stop most programs you probably want to use ctrl+c which sends the kill signal and tells the program to terminate.
cheers.
And for some (like ed) you need ctrl+d, which sends EOF.
I need to use KDE.
Use deck
This video is excellent for demonstrating the customizability of Linux. It also teaches some of the terminology, which isn't essential but can be helpful, such as window manager versus desktop environment. It's nice to see someone find their perfect personal "operating system."
Where can I download the Diana Perfect OS?
You can't lol.
8Auger -.-
***** what's that? o.Ô
***** well, look at Windows 7's price. Then look at Linux. It's free. Windows is at about 169£. So why do you give me a link to Windows 7? lol
***** sorry for what? :D
"That's the type of thing you look at?"
LOL @ Your mum busting your youtube viewing :)
CTRL Z does not quit a program. It stops it. Typing 'fg' will bring it back into the foreground.
If he's British he meant Ctrl-C
He's not British. He's Australian. Ctrl-c doesn't quit ranger. He doesn't really mean "quit", I'm sure he's just saying that for simplicity.
Huh, I figured that Ctrl-C did close out of a program. Guess I was wrong.
CowLunch he is not Aussie.... he is kiwi.....
+anwingm Well you know nothing about him.
I love how the minimalistic thing goes out of hand :D
Wow, OK.
I'm going to try that right after i've backed up my pictures and documents. And then i'm gonna show this to my grandma. Because i think she is perfect for Diana Perfect Arch OS.
Wow, limitless customization! When you go linux, you'll never go back!

It's a good operating system they said, You'll have the perfect UI they said, THEY LIED TO ME
Dianux!
Ctrl-z does not terminate the program, it only "stops" it ("stop" in Linux really means freezing a program in a way that it can be resumed later)
You're doing it wrong. The first package to install and run after opening an old window manager / desktop environment for the first time is "ALWAYS" oneko. Your mum would love that.
The only exception is twm where you're allowed to run xclock and xcalc first, but then you have to run oneko.

Diana's perfect desktop is kde tweaked to look like gnome 2... or just gnome 2 ;-)
She has already done ios 6 but we may do "Mum tries out siri on IOS 7" to see if she can perform a variety of tasks using siri and maybe even attempt to talk to siri like a normal human being. Like this comment if you want a video like that.
Plot twist: this is all just an ad for KDE
Great video. Love the way your "Mum" enthusiastically embraced Arch Linux AFTER you installed KDE & helped her customize it. Hope she still likes it. I will certainly give KDE another go in my Arch setup. Thanks!
tex
+texbrew64 I'm going LXDE since it is very light weight.
+Justin Games XFCE for me. About as customizable as KDE and still resource friendly but more feature rich than LXDE.
3:07 "This thing that looks like a dash on the keyboard"
Isn't that a dash? :/
Actually, I could imagine that key opening the Ubuntu dash now :P
+Victor Tran, that’s actually a hyphen, which is not quite the same thing.
People tend to call it a "dash" anyway though; myself included.
***** Well...
Correct me if I'm wrong:
- Hyphen
- Dash
- Em Dash
• Bullet
I can write morse code! •••---••• :P
Victor Tran
, that’s pretty much it, typographically speaking. The most important difference is usage, though. A hyphen is exclusively used in compound words, while a dash is mostly used to introduce parenthetical statements - like this one -, but can serve all kinds of different purposes.
If I used an en dash in word, like this: "one-sided", it would still be considered a hyphen. From a linguistic point of view, at least.
Come to think of it, maybe that’s why people call the hyphen character a dash. If it’s not being used as part of a compound word, it’s not really being used as a hyphen, after all.
***** "You learn something new every day!" :D
Remember that you would still have to go through the process of installing arch before you get to do the stuff in this video. Installing arch can be a long process but it's not too difficult if you follow the wiki.
I want the Diana desktop!
+Neal Brink Me to
^_^
get it.
I'm actually using it. Kubuntu 16.04 FTW.
Hey Just Text, It's KDE but customized...
She actually loves COMMANDS?
What kind of a mum is that?
Phil, buddy. You are blessed with an understanding mother.
'Ancient OS's'; It was new to me :|.; Nice video. Using your mom to beta test is fun and informative.
Arch+KDE is really perfect, your mom knows what she's talking about
Why not just teach her commands? ranger just made it...more confusing. That's just my opinion.
This was therapeutic, reminds you of days of old how you could only install what you needed because of hard drive or network limitations, instead, now you just install the full distro and go.
Thanks mate.
your mom is great!
FYI, pressing CTRL+Z doesn't actually close programs. Instead, it freezes them and moves them into the background. They aren't going to use any CPU, but they will continue to consume RAM. You can unfreeze the program by typing "fg" (without quotes) to run the program in the foreground, or "bg" to run it in the background (useful if you want the program to keep processing information while you use other programs). If you want to close a program, CTRL+C is better, although you will have to unfreeze the program in the foreground.
Release the Diana Perfect OS
+Thatguy It's just Arch Linux with KDE installed. If you want it, you could just install Kubuntu which would basically give you the same thing she has.
+-=[ Tenn1518 ]=- kubuntu doesnt use the correct package manager :P
+Jazoray u couldnt do pacman -s pacman

Great series. Your interaction is absolutely adorable!
This does not compute. Pacman? Sounds like a video game.
+Axyl Fredrick Yep, I know. But I personally think the name is quite fly for that very reason. How cool is that? A portmanteau of "package manager" - sure... ;)
+Axyl Fredrick , you can actually add a line to pacman’s configuration file to turn the progress bar that appears when installing software into pacman eating some pills.
That alone is enough reason for me to think pacman is the best package manage ever.
It's "ILoveCandy"
Allan Nelson
Nope, it’s called pacman. As I already mentioned, the developers even put a reference to the game on the program, which I think is great.
pacman -S pacman
Your videos are pretty entertaining and yet informative. I really admire your teaching style and hope you keep making these with later releases as well. Your mom is an amazing sport and asks the questions many of the viewers are thinking about. Oh, and yes Arch can be somewhat of an arch enemy at first.
Install Gentoo
This is a very informative video. I've just watched the entire thing. Thank you for taking the time to do this!
I'm a lifetime Windows user but I have to say Linux is a great OS for just the average user who basically uses the computer for email, social media, youtube etc... documents, spreadsheets etc.. this is perfect. But if you are into gaming you have to stick with Windows. If they ever came up with a way to run Windows games on Linux at fullspeed or faster than it does on Windows that would be amazing! I would seriously consider switching to Linux. But no DirectX in Linux would severely limit its usefulness for me. Yes, I know about Wine but that isn't mean for high end gaming.
Classic80sStuff OpenGL is faster than DirectX everywhere but Winblows. You know why? MS cripples it on purpose so game devs have to use DX, and thus don't make games that work well on rival platforms. I don't know about you, but I can't in good conscience support a company that abuses its market position so hard.
Classic80sStuff well you are a few hundred years behind.
ever heard of wine?
ultracreeper101 Yep it doesn't work well enough for most games
+ultracreeper101 wine doesn't do everything though, it it can't run office 2013, what chance does it have at a high end game?
And to the OP: *some* games do run on Linux, steam is available on it.
Victor Tran meh, I prefer office 2003 honestly. but I see what you are saying. however I'm my experiences some games running through wine are faster than native windows.
October 13th so we can take a break from doing these for a while. The next os will be templeOS.
But i'm still disapionted by the lack of populair programs Linux doesn't have that Windows does. Like PaintDotNet, GameMaker and other good stuff.
Joshua Barendse die kun je in playonlinux runnen (wine)

Joshua Barendse Also, here's some suggestions for alternatives mentioned by others for those programs
Paint.Net: askubuntu.com/questions/142/is-there-a-paint-net-alternative
GameMaker: alternativeto.net/software/game-maker/?platform=linux
That one seems to be harder to replace, but there's a lot of software out there to try...
+Hidde Schat Does he look like he speaks gibberish?
Jake1702 CP I'm assuming that you're referring to Hidde Schat using Dutch while the OP of this thread was in English?
I believe the avatar of the OP is the Dutch flag?
If that's accurate then it's probably reasonable to assume that the person in question is affiliated to that country in some way.
That would potentially allow the OP to understand dutch.
In other words he doesn't seem to be writing any gibberish pr say as far as I can tell...
No need to type "y", just press enter. The option in capital letter is the default option that will be chosen if you just press enter.
Just wondering about the whole not being able to sell Linux thing... how come they can sell Zorin os premium? They have a free version and then the premium versions which they charge 10 euros for. Is that because the distro contains software created by them?
CTRL+Z does not quit the program, it just stops it. Typing in "fg" brings it back. The quit command is CTRL+C.
I've got to be careful breaking away from the norm... OSFirstTimer is popular due to these "Mum Tries Out" videos so I'm trying to follow that formula. I wonder if "Mum's Guide to Installing Arch Linux" would be popular...
Sudo: Diana is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.
;)
You're not trying to do all this off the live usb are you? Remember arch Linux needs to be installed before it's probably usable in the state you saw it at the beginning of this video.
This "house" you speak of is actually an apartment. You really think we could afford a 6 million dollar ocean view house? We have an ocean view but living in an apartment makes it millions of dollars cheaper...
Yes, You deserve a break ;) Your videos are very nice, keep the good work up!
I tried to point that out to her in the video but she kinda ignored me.
Cool, glad you like it. You're the first person I've ever met who actually likes it.
as a matter of fact this is direct from the gpl preamble. "When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not price. Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for them if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it if you want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it in new free programs, and that you know you can do these things."
This is such an awesome video.... I have been contemplating switching from Ubuntu to Arch for a while now and your video has given me the confidence that I can do this. I was originally planning on installing the Gnome DE but your video has inspired me to try out KDE. And as a final comment your Mom is such an amazing woman who loves you so much.
Hey Donald, you won
So, are you going to jail hillary now
The fact that in the end Diana removed the file browser, which makes it very similar to mobile OSs and the fact that it has a 'locked down' file system. It means that the different files are only accessible in the program they were created in.
If you think Arch Linux is complicated, try Gentoo Linux ;)
It's actually very similar to Arch, in a way that you can build your system from scratch with whatever packages you want by downloading them from the repositories and installing through its package manager Portage. The difference is, though, that most of the packages are distributed as sources and compiled on your machine from these sources into binaries, so that you can make sure that they don't do anything evil, and you can't get any infected binaries this way. But what's more important is that you can configure your compiles in a more detailed way by choosing so-called USE flags, which can turn some features on or off for each particular package, and you can compile everything particularly for your CPU so that the software will use all those extended instruction sets like MMX, SSE/2/3 etc. if your CPU supports them :> It can give you some boost for multimedia. The package manager also manages the dependencies automatically for you, but it displays them in a very nice way, in a tree-like form and with colours :) (Though there are some GUIs for it as well.)
I've been following these videos for awhile now and I have to say great intro! A little rough around the edges at the beginning but I know as time goes on you will find ways to make it better. Good job!
I love that fact your mum chuckled at the word packages.... i wonder what it made her think about :)
Brings back the good memories watching this in 2018!!! Love your channel😀
I did this to my mum... She said "This is the reason i use windows".
You do not need a shortcut to the terminal in any linux desktop environment because holding "ctrl+alt" and tapping "t" will bring it up by default.
not any linux DE
A huge clock, preopened text editor, a "change background" button and "mutiply 2 numbers" application.
Its really nice how you and your mother team up to create such nice videos. Great team work!
This video seems to have attracted a lot of people to arch Linux. Seems like its making people quite confident.
