Mum Experiments With Dangerous Linux Terminal Commands In theShell 7.0 (2017)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 жов 2017
- Any Linux user knows that the terminal is a very powerful tool. With great power though, comes great responsibility as some commands can wreck havoc on your system. The Death Command Roulette Game starts at 9:52 so skip to that if you are low on time.
Diana will be given a list of 13 different terminal commands. 9 of these will be perfectly harmless, while 4 will be extremely dangerous. Will Diana be able to figure out which commands are safe while avoiding the destructive commands? Keep watching to find out!
theShell is based on Arch Linux, although, please note that not all commands shown in this video can be executed on theShell right out of the box. Some of the commands such as "cowsay" require extra terminal packages to be installed via pacman.
You can download theShell from here: sourceforge.net/projects/theo...

Bummer, no, there is no easter egg at the end of this video. I simply made a mistake and left part of a layer near the end of the video when I was disabling smart sampling in sony vegas. Ignore the last minute and 15 seconds of this video, it contains NOTHING except for darkness followed by a white rectangle near the end.
OSFirstTimer Can you do the rewiev on Windows GOLD edition
you dont use vmware any more?
i am NOT a linux person and i can instantly spot out the bad ones
OSFirstTimer Thanks for this video!
Phil you are amazing!!! I love watching your videos!!! I also have to give Diana credit because she is a main part aswell!!! KEEP IT UP!!!
"Well even if I wiped C:/, I'd still have A, B and all the rest..."
I know, I was just quoting what she said.
I don't think that he was saying it would physically ruin the PC; just the OS.
*Linux doesn't even use C:\
TheMuteCat yup. If you delete System32 alone, nothing changes until you reboot your pc (maybe some apps not starting but nothing too significant).
The REAL damage comes with deleting C:\Windows. It screws up every single thing (like Start or Cortana), every driver (so your screen loses the normal resolution) and after some minutes, the system dies. Pretty cool though
linux doesn't name drivers as C:/ D:/ it named them like /dev/sd*letter**number* so technically there is no C:/ drive.

Sudo rm -rf / is something every Linux user should know is bad. Rm means remove, -rf means force recursively, recursively meaning that it goes to the bigger one after one is empty, and / is the root folder. In other words, the command force removes the root folder recursively.
:D sudo rm rf -no-preserve-root is so useful
Just to be on the safe side against this sort of attack I will be replacing sudo with doas so that sudo rm -rf / can't hurt me anymore.

I was practically screaming my head off when she typed in the rm -rf / command. This video is way more nailbiting than the title would have you think!
Please do more "diana destroys" videos. Like if you agree so phil can see. LOVE U GUYS!!!
In the situation of "destroys", we feel we have reached the limit of the general formula, thus why we tried out something new for this episode by turning it into a bit of an elimination game.
@@OsFirstTimer you should continue doing these russian roulette like videos
The "wipe drive" one was actually pretty obvious, in an actual terminal command it would probably say "wipedrive"
"wipedrive" is ridiculous phrasing anyway :)
Why would there be a special command dedicated to wiping the drive? It would probably be like “wipe

when I saw the "cowsay wipe drive" command I actually started laughing
This was a pretty fun and interesting take on the theme, especially with the decoy commands that were in fact more innocent than they looked. Though maybe you should have taken some time researching/testing the bad ones ahead of time so you didn't have to awkwardly explain to Diana why they technically counted as bad even though they didn't actually happen to work in the video.

I don't know how to feel about the ShellOS. I can't decide whether I like it or not. The calculator symbol does seem pretty strange, though. I'll have to use it more, haha.
I gotta say, this is a very clever, creative idea for a game. :)
34:00 Aaaand this is why you test your commands beforehand, ladies and gentlemen! (Same goes for the rm -rf / one!)
Edit: hey, it's not very nice to say "you failed"! Based on her general score, she did very well!
"They would instantly spot out the 4 bad commands."
As a Linux user, I can confirm. The second she opened the text file I knew which ones would be bad.
Yep, spotted the bad commands instantly, though it took me a bit more for the pacman one since I never used it. But I knew it was a package manager, and after realising you weren’t a systemd hater and seeing there is is an “R” being passed as an argument, I knew it wasn’t to install or update systemd, but to remove it.
I learned a few fun commands, though, didn’t know about figlet or cowsay!
"Wipe drive". No drive specified....
Moral of the story: Linux's fail-safes are amazing
Great vid OS, Keep up the work :D
31:33 that sound scared the shit out of me
I spotted some of them instantly and I rarely use Linux but the phrasing of cowsay made me remember paying around with cowsay and I watched a video on rm -rf /
36:37 For a split second i thought she was going to say "maybe the personal assistant is immortal."
I was wearing good headphones at a fair volume, I could hear you and Diana clearly... then Diana executed a bad command and my heart came up to my mouth (I got scared) why did you have to make that sound so loud!!!! it literally scared the life out of me! Then every time Diana was about to press enter I quickly changed the sound to come out of the iPad and instead of the headphones so I wouldn’t get scared.
Ah, I've got pretty old speakers so sounds are lower and quite muffled while I'm editing. That particular sound must of sounded very different through your headphones, sorry about that. Through my speakers it was barely louder than the audio of Diana and I talking.
Just re-read the comment sorry if it was a bit harsh (;
Legit, just change the first sentence to "Yikes!!" and the whole comment becomes way less harsh :P
OSFirstTimer Hi, nice video by the way.
there are ear rape everywhere
When she hit enter on the dd command I cringed so bad also the thumbnail has the forkbomb and you never did that so maybe you should make a part two or something.
Same with me!
This is really creative. Thank you.
I LOVE the UI of theShell OS! Since i am huge Qt design!
Even though you don't upload, I still like your content.
Diana, pointing at rm -rf: I think this one is good
Me: oh no…
Awesome video
Why do I enjoy this
I NEEDED THIS!
The GUI of this OS is really cool, looks about as cool as Zorin OS 11.
I like how no one realised that Phil displayed my old channel instead of this one
Explanation of the mkfs command
mk=make fs=filesystem

/dev/sda1 is the mount point for the new filesystem
You scared the life outta me at 31:33!
She's doing it so that we don't try them ourselves. You know we love our distros so much.
You know that sound effect when Diana loses a life in the roulette? It makes me jump. Every. Fucking. Time.
This is so entertaining to watch. Try doing that with windows or Mac OS maybe if you can
"It's only a few little letters, how can that do any damage." The next thing you know, a rookie IT guy has been fired playing Command Roulette on the main server.
This segment ought to be called mucking about with mum on the PC
I'm watching this at 11 at night and the bad command sound effect scared me lol
I like this type of Video :D

Loved her logic, when choosing which ones to use... 🤣
Hi Philip, where did you get the music for your outro. Ps brilliant video as always you are my favourite youtuber

OSFirstTimer Thank you
She keeps hanging over them and i say "NONONONONONO NOT THAT ONE"
sudo rm -rf / is not harmful, BUT if you add an asterisk (sudo rm -rf /*) it WILL become very dangerous (as it bypasses the check for removing /, and it removes every folder in the root instead)
If you are impatient, skip to the time card HERE -->9:52
24:18 "if you were a knowledgeable windows user this would freak you out"
Me: but where backslash
My good friend --help never fails me :p
Just replace "sudo rm -rf / --no-preserve-root" with "sudo rm -rf C:\ --no-preserve-root" back in time. She would never have typed it in, bruh, even though it's 100% safe, I believe.
Nice video!
rm -rf/
"This seems ok."

How is it dangerous
are you sure about that?

great video
You gave me a heart attack on the first bad
Surprisingly fun video and you are doing well job confusing your mother.
3:00 That's actually just the default display manager theme.
Can you link me to the commands? I want to do this but all the commands aren't found on my copy.
when diana got the first one wrong i wasnt expecting it and i literally jumped at the noise it made
I think the login screen doesn’t really fit into the theme
“Here we are in the calculator, now we’re going to close it out”
15:35 Yes, definitely! I instantly identified the bad ones!
You should do another one of those
Your mom is brave and she luvs you a lot !
That random string of punctuation in the thumbnail is the 1 line fork bomb for Linux, right?
Always kills me at 29:32 “well that’s saying that you can make some sort of an extension 4 by developing a sda1 XDDD
Philip: Out of the four how many did you get right.
Diana: Yes. •_•
Diana... You were so close! Good Job Anyway!
I know this may be a strange idea but if you can do a video on the kingsway “OS” that’d be great!
29:32
Well its saying that you can make some sort of extension 4 by developing a sda1
I laughed really hard when i heard this 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
how do you install theShell? (idk what settings to use in vmware)
the download has multiple files.. so wich one makes us install the shell?
And while mom is obediently hacking away all those cryptic commands she thinks by herself "he's gonna be a wizard soon"
What's the song at the beginning
That *bad* sound scared me off so bad
that bad command sound gave me a heart attack
Some command explanations for people curious:
sudo figlet delete C:\: No such thing as C:\ in Linux, anyway
sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1: If it can overwrite the drive in use, that'd erase the drive
sudo cowsay delete drive: Cowsay is a cow, or another character, saying a chosen string
sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda: If it worked, it would ZERO OUT /dev/sda
at least she understood extension4 formatting!
Haha I love this mom. She looks like someone with a lot of time money and very little stress.
Hey, what's the music from the start?
