Great video. I followed these steps yesterday, installed the new part you recommended, and the refrigerator is working well today. We've had so many problems with this Samsung. I'll never buy another. But at least we'll get a bit more mileage from this one than we anticipated. Thank you!

Thanks for a great video. I have a 2011 3 French Door Refrigerator RFG237. After watching your video, I decided to purchase the upgraded replacement clip - which was not recommended for my specific model - but I purchased it anyway. I unplugged the fridge and left it overnight. I worked one side of the panel off quite easily but the left side was not budging. So, I waited until the following morning and the left side of the panel popped off easily. The ice was built up around the clip and was blocking the drain. I removed the buld of the ice and let the chuck around the clip melt on its own. Despite that, there was some residual ice in the drain that prevented the replacement clip from dropping in - so I used a syringe and squirted some hot water into the drain, and after a few minutes the remaining ice melted and the clip nicely fit in. Thanks again for your excellent instructions.

Good video! I would add that when on a repair job with ice blockage in a fridge or freezer drain, myself and most homeowners don't stock an extra long heating clip. What I have with me that works universally and is FREE is a piece of 14 gauge electrical wire. I strip off all the sheathing, cut to length so it wraps 2-3X around defront heater element, sticks down in the drain hole far enough but not so far as to touch any drain nipple below and centered. The bare copper wire conducts well to transfer heat for keeping ice from forming in the tube. Lastly, this repair won't solve the problem if the drain nipple is blocked/clogged below as the water will still backup. One has to first determine if the blockage is caused by a clogged nipple or ice blockage. A clogged nipple problem can be easily solved without even opening the fridge or freezer entering the lower back of the unit by pulling it off and examining it.

Having found this video and the answer to water under the Deli Tray, 'm getting ready to make this fix. A piece of copper wire was the first thing that came to mind also. I'm thinking two 'tails' down the drain hole, spiraled several times around the lower coil line.
Also seconding the idea of some warm water down the drain hole.

Just took on this project today. This video was the most helpful I’ve found. Mine took less time to defrost to the point of being able to get the cover off. ≈9 hours. A small pair of snips made quick work of the old heating element. The one part that didn’t defrost in time was the drain tube itself. I used a combination of a small (electronics style) soldering iron and some hot water to knock out the rest. Thanks for this helpful video and fingers crossed that I’m in the clear with the new part from the link!

If you put the tang of the clip down into the drain hole, you can slide the whole thing up and over the coolant line from the back. Then bend the two end clips up. Thanks for this excellent reference guide. Edit: Forgot to add that tin snips work great to remove the old drain spout. Clip it just below the rivet, twist the front tab up and the rivet drips out. In my case it went down to the freezer. Haven't found it yet.

For 11 years I've been taking the drawer out (every 3-4 weeks) to remove all the ice. Eventually I have had to replace the roller assembly on left side from breakage. When the ice cubes stop being formed, I stick my finger under the tray and confirm the ice building up. Or my husband points out to me the water running out between the doors. So, I remove the big tray (have this task on my calendar, LOL!) but all the time saying under my breath "there has to be a reason for the ice buildup." Today I went to get ice cubes and viola it's time!! So, I decided to go to my favorite place for help and came across your video. Thank you I will try this when the part comes in. Kimm

We've had this issue with our Samsung refrigerator for years. In the past, we've emptied it, let it completely defrost, and then fired it back up, but the problem would recur. I finally got to the point where I had to see what was going on with the drain line. After pulling the back panel off of the refrigerator compartment, my first thought was that part of the drain line heat clip must have broken off and gone down the drain line. After seeing your video, I realized that the heat was what I saw but grossly inadequate for dealing with freezing IN the drain line. Ugh! What a poor design. I just ordered the replacement drain clip from Amazon and plan on finishing up the job tomorrow. Glad to have come across your video!

Water collecting inside the fridge can be because the drain tube is blocked, not by ice at the top, but by being blocked by dirt at the bottom. So before stripping the inside of the fridge it might be more sensible to check the drain tubes inside the lower back panel. Its much quicker and does not require the fridge to be emptied. If its not the problem you can still strip out the fridge and look for the ice issue. I was really glad I checked the back first.

How do you check the drain tubes?

    • @peterwhiting6303
      @peterwhiting6303 Рік тому +8

@@julianawatkins4489 The drain tubes deposit water on to a tray on top of the compressor. The compressor warms this area and the water evaporates. So to check the bottom of the drain tubes you need to access the compressor area. There is normally a panel on the back at the bottom. SO WITH THE POWER OFF, remove screws and panel and examine the tubes that terminate in the tray above the compressor. There are 3 in my fridge. I wiggled them about and got suprisingly wet when the dirt and the trapped water shot out. the dirt was trapped because the tube actually rested on the base of the tray. I cut it a little shorter so it could not happen again. I assume it might be possible to have something larger get ino and block the tube higher up. But that was not the problem in my case.

Good job on the video... I didn't realize the fix was so involved but watching you go through the gears to 'upgrade' the little 'thermal clip' gives me a much better idea of what it will take to fix the problem. Good job on shooting video in the confined space inside the fridge... I'd bet shooting the video was at least as difficult as doing the fix!

@@tamill1 Hey, thanks! I confidently went through the process of replacing/upgrading the thermal clip successfully after watching your video.
FWIW After replacing the clip, condensation water still wouldn't drain out through the drain tube. Turned out that the little rubber orifice thingy that drains into the evaporation tray under the fridge was clogged up with some funky reddish/brownish/blackish gunk which plugged it up so water wouldn't drain. Removed and cleaned that and now it drains perfectly. No regrets for upgrading the clip though because now I'm confident it won't freeze up during humid weather and overflow.
      Best, Matt

Thanks for the video. I had a tough time getting the bottom center screw out. it had rusted and was rotating free with plastic nut. Eventually I had to drill it out. In my case the heater had a bend towards bottom, so the replacemet clip had to be shortened in order to fit. After I got the bottom center plastic nut out, I ended up installing a drywall plastic butterfly anchor for the bottom center screw, which worked perfect.

Only issue was finding where to loosen coil. Standard wire cutters directly into rivet on each sides popped small probe right out. Thanks for a well done video.

Good video, but a few points:
The aluminum fins are very sharp! Be very careful and make slow, deliberate motions or will leave blood spots.
They sent me the wrong fixer clip, way different. I made a usable substitute from 6 Inches of #12 house wire.
Be careful with the aluminum pipes. They are thin and if you puncture one the whole evaporator and Freon charge needs to be replaced.
Keep watching to see what happens with the class action lawsuit related to these fridges.

This is just a testament to the engineering and quality of Samsung in my opinion as well as their lack of willingness to improve. I always have a lifetime guarantee for products like this (I'll never buy Samsung again in my lifetime). What an expensive lesson, I'm not optimistic I'll find anything better with their competition. In their race to manufacture the cheapest, companies reap the rewards and we and the environment suffer the loss.

Don’t worry your food will be fine just don’t keep opening the door. I do it when I’m going out for a few hours. When it builds up again do it over. I’ve been doing that for years.

WAIT! Check the drain tube behind the floor panel at the back of the fridge! Especially if yours is older. Our 10 year old 4 door french Samsung used the old style rubber "duck bill" check valve that hardened in the closed position and was the reason for water under the crisper. Would not let defrost water through. The rubber cracked into multiple pieces when pressed. The current replacement valve/tube is a different design that probably does not have the issue. Replace if yours is the old style. Old valve/tube pull right off and redesign version pushes right back on. About $15.

@@katesmith9960 If your fridge has a working icemaker or dispenses water, then yes there is a water supply tube. When we moved into our house we inherited a Samsung French door icebox. That’s been 2yrs ago and I’ve always had this problem. I just took the tray out every so often and removed the ice.. 6 months ago we changed our sink but my son-in-law didn’t hookup the water line for the ice maker. Now that it’s hooked up again my ice maker isn’t working anymore! It’s back to freezing up again under the crisper but no ice. Would that 6 month setup have anything to do with the ice maker not working? It’s not frozen, I’ve ran it through every cycle there is, still nothing!! Any thoughts or suggestions?

Check the back 1st, OUTSIDE. Open the bottom plate.
Rubber hoses drain down into the dish.
Middle robber hose had a mineral bildup; this has coused the leak from the INSIDE.

This is a great video, thanks for posting it! I have a GE French door refrigerator that I defrosted over several years, trying different types of clips to keep the drain line defrosted. My belief is that the insulation on the back of the freezer becomes waterlogged over time, becoming less efficient, and the problem starts below where the clip is effective. Absolutely do this, you have to defrost the ice inside the unit. What I finally did, before I threw the whole refridgerator away, was to cut open the back of the unit to expose the bottom of the drain pan and I re-routed the drain line to the OUTSIDE so it stays warm. For several years now, my fridge is working great. Watch this video and support Home Repair Hub but if you have to keep doing it, you may want to try my solution as a last resort - ua-cam.com/video/HwaP92Smvro/v-deo.html

You're still going to get ice buildup.
The main issue is the drain tubes in the back.
They get clogged. Samsung redesigned them.
    That's the best fix
