You saved me several hundred dollars in a service call to my home. I knocked this out in a couple hours with some help from my wife. 3 months later, our freezer functions perfectly. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you so much. I knew there was a drain but couldn't find it. Your instructions were clear and easy to follow. I really appreciate your attention to detail.
Thanks so much! This fixed a problem we’d been dealing with for years now. We’ve had mountains of ice regularly build up in the bottom of our freezer. We’d have to break it up every once in a while so the door would fully close. The bottom drawer got busted by the ice long ago. An appliance repair guy told us we just need to replace the fridge. Draining the drain line as you showed fixed it. There was a lot a gunk clogging it. Anyway you saved us thousands of dollars. Thanks!
This worked!! Thank you so much for the clear instructions. We had to alternate with hot water, hair dryer, hot water again, etc a few times. We also used a basketball air pump to push some air through. That finally did the trick to get the water to drain.
Thanks MC for the quick refresher course. I have had to do this before on my GE side by side but was not certain of the steps and little tips you gave. So tomorrow I am going to tackle this job that will require to unload enough frozen food to feed a family of 6. The good news is by watching tutorials on you tube, I have been able to diagnose and repair just about everything on my unit. So, despite the fact that it is 17 years old, (and came with our new home) it runs just like new.! Gotta Love Google Search!
So glad this was helpful and allowed you to be able to do it yourself. Got to love Google and UA-cam to help save the day! Thanks for watching and good luck on your project!
Great video. Easy instructions to follow too! I was wondering how to get that back section off. Mines leaking water and turning to ice in the same location!

Fantastic! Thanks for this. I fixed our fridge with this. I should say it works for Samsung RSG5DUMH as well although the back is a bit different (has a fan in the panel and it plugs into the back) it works. You just need to get the hole pipe (I'm guessing about 15-20 cm) until the exit defrosted. So better to put hot water and take it out back when it's cooled down with a simple pipette and repeat until it unblocks. Cheers!
A big thanks for a most helpful tutorial. Allowed me to identify the source of the water puddle at the base of my fridge. I followed the excellent step-by-step instructions and video documentation. Problem fixed!
Thanks for the tips! Had to do exactly what you did and it worked! I let mine go for awhile and had 6 inches of ice at bottom of freezer! Had to chisel it out first lol.

I get it. It's not a great design by Samsung. Many, many people have this issue and sometimes it can be reoccuring. I still own this fridge, but I'm pretty sure it will be my last Samsung, because now all of the LED lights are going out on the touch screen. The quality of this fridge is very much lacking. Best of luck on your future use of this product and hopefully now you won't have to make any more service calls and can do it yourself.
@@MCFIXIT most definitely worth it! It didn’t take that long thanks to your video and now it’ll be done even quicker if I have to do it again, thanks again!
Thank you for this. My Samsung is a french door one, but it had two of these white rubber drain caps. Didn't take much dirty water to plug them. 5 minute fix!
Yeah, these are a pain bc it can reoccur. Mines only don’t it twice in about two years but there is a chance you’ll have to do it again in the future. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@teriking3850 Do you the model with the refrigerator on top and the freezer on the bottom left, and the additional adjustable refrigerator on the bottom right? I've got frozen ice sheets on the left bottom and i'm looking for a permanent fix. I thought there was an enhancement kit to permanently fix this issue (like the problem folks have with the top freezing up)
I thought that drain valve looked gross. But mine was even worse, I soaked mine in some dawn dish soap and hot water and it clean up very nicely! Thanks for a great video 👍
We used your video to fix our refridgerator drain about a month ago. Today the same problem came up and I realized after taking it apart that we hadn't cleaned out the white piece! Thanks to your video I knew where the problem was and fixed it once again. We are all going to need to DIY fix it more often now I am afraid.:/
Mine lasted about a year. I didn’t end up changing out the defrost line. And since then I’ve had no issues. But it is a lot of work to get that out and does cost quite a bit of money.
A good and useful item I use to defrost drain lines in refrigerators is I use a steamer I got from orchard supply with the protruding spout. It gets in there real good and you can usually blast out the ice pretty quick. And you can hear the pitch change as it's going which is kinda satisfying. If you don't have 1 or don't wanna buy 1, a turkey blaster can force the hot water in there and pressure helps too.
Thank you for the video, sir! Really helpful My problem is it keeps building up that ice like every week even though i cleaned up the ice that and the back...what could the issue?
Thanks so much! I appreciate you watching and commenting! It might be a faulty defrost line. It is the metal part behind the plastic wall you take off.
Very clear instructions and easy to do. Thank you. The issue I'm having is that after I did all of this. The line from the inside to the back/bottom is still clogged. I've been putting hot water in the tray on the inside and it just sits there. I've had the fridge unplugged for almost two hours. What ever ice in that line should have melted by now. What do I do?
@@MCFIXIT I didn't have a hair dryer or heat gun. So what I ended up doing was to take a narrow bottle brush and pushed down through the drain and it cleared that clog. Everything is good now.
Thanks fur the video it happened my refrigerator. Do you know hi long it will take for the refrigerator and freezer to get a cooler temperature? And when will the ice start making?
Thank you, great video! My drain did not drain after melting the ice so I had to blow air back thru the drain from the rear drain outlet up into the freezer. I used an old bike tire tube and cut it at the leak and used a pipe clamp to attached one end to the drain behind the fridge and clamped the other end closed and then pumped it up with a tire pump and air started bubbling at the condensate drain pan inside the freezer and eventually cleared out as I pumped more air. There must have been calcium/lime sediment that caused the initial blockage and then the water froze. Thanks again for the video!
Have this exact fridge and same issue. I got it fixed a year ago maybe. Just noticed a very thin line of water tonight. Might be starting to clog again. Was wondering if the build up is minimal, Could I skip to the end step and just clear the drain tube in the back? Would that be sufficient to stop it from getting worse? Awesome video btw!
That might work but I bet if you are seeing it then you will need to pull it a part and get it thawed out inside. Let me know if just the back works if you go that route! Thanks for watching and the comment!
Hi beautiful princess!!!! Were you able to fix it 2 months ago and still running good? I have to work on mine probably tomorrow or the day after. Thank you. Have a good night and Happy New Year by the way. Greetings from Tucson Arizona 🌵🌞🌵
@@teishaw8715 That's great!! I just noticed some water on the floor today next to the freezer door an opened it and removed the bottom drawer and there was ice there I cleaned up the ice. I'll check it out in the morning and if there is ice again I am going to have to work on it. Thank you Princess!! Have a good night!!
Try prying lightly and you might be able to see where the other fasteners are located. Be careful bc Samsung makes everything out of plastic and it’s not that durable!
Thank You!! I just did this today. Took it over 10 years to clog. I ended up cutting a little bit of that squished piece that was clogged. So hopefully it doesn't happen again.
We have this issue with our freezer and was excited when I saw this video. We followed all the steps and were hoping to solve the problem. Unfortunately, the next morning, there was already more ice build up. Any other ideas?? I appreciate it!
@@MCFIXIT I only put a few items back in so far but no extra build up on those things or anything else. Might go back in and double check the water is draining properly and that nothing else is getting in the way.
@@stardust818 something was obstructing the drain tube. Could have been a piece of food, or a piece from the drain. 😬🤷🏼♀️ It froze in there somewhere. We still have no idea what it was but we noticed right away when it cleared and haven’t had a problem since
Would it be wise to take the back panel off first to check and see if the hose that you pulled off and water gushed out before removing the panel inside. ?
hi MC FIX IT this same Samsung refrigerator in this video , there is ice building up on top behind the back panel ? what to do or is this more than I can repair and need a new refrigerator ?
Where at on the back panel? You may need a new defrost line. They aren’t super expensive (less than $200) and it’s a doable project but takes a bit more time than this repair.
@@MCFIXIT Thank you so much for responding to me. Yes on the back top of panel ice was forming on the outer. I got a hairdryer melted as best as I could . I only was able to do the last repair from your great video we had the exact same refrigerator. The Samsung is 10 yrs old, lots of dissatisfied customers that own a Samsung, I think I'll take my 200$ towards a whirlpool no bells and whistles no ice maker with thermostats knobs i can control refrigerator. 🙂
Good stuff bro,it helped me ❤😂😂I have Kenmore,no more they used to be great, now not so much.I think they are designed to last a couple years and then take a crap on ya.
Great video! Checked out the back of the fridge first and the tubes weren't blocked. But then opened up the inside panel and used the boiling water and after about 10 mins the blockage was cleared. I easily had a 1 to 1-1/2 inches of frozen water under the bottom drawer before I started this project. Hoping that it doesn't start building up immediately!
Hi MC Fix It. I have the exact same Samsung fridge model and a year after cleaning out the defrost drain, replacing the drain clip, and clearing the drain tubes in back of the fridge, I am having the same issue again almost every day now. Have you or anyone else found a more permanent solution (if one was found)? If so, could you please share what you did here? Other people have suggested replacing the temperature sensor, or the evaporator/defrost heater, or the refrigerator door seal. Thanks!
MC Fit IT I have the same refrigerator you have, not a very good one:( I had this issue 3yrs ago after 350.00$ repairman came out , it did it again. It began a few days ago I watched your video which is excellent!!! I cleaned out the back vacuumed the coils cleaned the tube gross like yours, full of water, will that be enough to fix the problem. I hesitate to take the back off( lack of confidence doing it :) I didn't have a lot of ice on the bottom I put a towel to catch the water that was dripping down ? If I keep the fridge off overnight and use a hot blow dryer to blow on the front could it help melt the ice. I just did it a few minutes and heard some crackle noise. Appreciate your input thank you.
Yes, no power overnight and with a blow dryer should take care of the problem. Make sure to keep the door open. Not a big fan of this fridge at all. I’m staying away from this brand but honesty most brands today are not built to last
@@MCFIXIT thank you for responding to me your video is excellent. I cleaned the tube in the back yesterday and vacuum the coils . this morning for 7 hrs I unplug the refrigerator .I took the back off and used my blow dryer and very hot water and got rid of the ice. Hopefully I didn't over do it I used the dryer all over to make sure so there be no water moisture. Since I did it backwards the tube first yesterday and the inside to day (I got brave:) Is it necessary to do the tube again? Thank you for your input
It shouldn’t be. If it continues to be an issues I’ve read that you might need a new defrost element. That’s what you can kind of see when you take everything off!
Definitely a great options when back there. I believe I mentioned this and did it at another time very close to after recording this video. I’ve often got complaints on my videos when I do things like this bc they say it takes up too much time.
Tge black hose nearest to the draun hole is the heater for the freezer fins and you can wrap around a copper wire and coonect it to the drain hole so whenever it starts freezing up atleast the drain is open
Thanks for the video! I did all of this 2 months ago and it's now frozen up again. At this point do you recommend adjusting the freezer temperature up some? Could the issue be a faulty defrost timer or something else you think? thx!!
Does your door even not seal properly? Like: Kids leaving door open? Too full and it doesn’t seal properly? Or maybe a faulty seal due to a bad or broken seal? Doing it often is not a good thing bc it can ruin food if temperature is not kept properly. You could definitely try turning the temperature down a bit and see if that helps as well.
@@MCFIXIT yes I have this exact fridge and problem. I've done this process and ice continues to come back. I finally called repair man and they just did this exact thing which I'd already been doing. I wasn't home at the time but feel completely ripped off. I hate this samsung fridge/freezer.
It might be your defrost freezer line. It’s fixable but does take more time, tools, and about a $200 part for a new line. I am not a fan of Samsung fridge/freezers.
@@MCFIXIT thank you! I had the ice build up and followed the directions in your video. However now my freezer temp is beeping and flashing H1 and will not make ice. Any suggestions?
Earned it all out and within a month bottom was frozen thick again , floor was wet. Had emptied drain pan last time. Does the seal on the door need replaced?
It’s probably your defrost line. It’s that thin metal that raps around the aluminum and comes near to touching the bottom vent. I’ve actually just done this but haven’t had the time to edit it. I’ll try to get it posted as soon as I can.
UPDATE: Followed you VIdeo, took me about 1.25 hours. Trying to use hot water to clear the tube once all the frozen ice in the bottom hidden tray got clear. After 20 mins of using hair dryer, I ended up going to the back. I do believe I could have save at least half hour by just going to the back. That little white drip cap was clogged. Not frozen. I do now think it is a good idea to go to the back anyway just to clear all the Dust Bunnies! THANKS for your time, instructions, and the uploading of this video.
Yeah, the defrost is behind the freezer on mine. I think it’s a design flaw that’s causing it. I’ve never had anything like this go wrong on the fridge side.
Thanks for the video! Moral of the story - NEVER EVER BUY ANY SAMSUNG PRODUCTS! WE'VE HAD TWO DIFFERENT SAMSUNG REFRIGERATORS, A SIDE-BY-SIDE, & A FRENCH DOOR MODEL. THEY BOTH SUCK BC OF ISSUES LIKE THIS. OUR $1600 SMART WASHER WAS THE DUMBEST PURCHASE WE EVER MADE. IT NEVER REALLY CLEANED OUR CLOTHES & WITHIN THE FIRST MONTH IT DEVELOPED THE INFAMOUS SAMSUNG MOLD ISSUE.
I've had some luck with their TVs and computer monitors. But I have heard many not satisfied with their appliances. I'm not sure I would buy another one. Many appliances are made cheap today and do not hold up like many of the previous models. We had a Maytag "smart" washer and ended up going back to our original one that was not high efficient but worked sooo much better. I'm glad I didn't sell or have the metal scrapper guy near pick up the old one. Have a good one.
LG washer presented accumulation of residue beneath the basket and gave off the same tell tell bouquet. My Sammy fridge is leaking as indicated. Gonna take this DIY approach to attempt a fix.
Ok I had this problem and followed your video. However it didn’t fix my problem. My freezer is now flashing H1 and is not making ice or freezing completely. What else do I need to do?
I’ve never had that issue. I’d check to see what the H1 means and go from there. My guess would be that it needs a new defrost coil. But search on Google your model number and the error code. Sounds like it’s got a bigger issue than just icing up like mine had.
I cut the end of that white V tube so the water would drain out & not freeze in there, but the freezer still has to be de-iced with your method about once a year. Mine has a top fridge and freezer under & it's an absolute b&^%$^%d to work on, I'll buy a different brand next time!
I'm certain that it is! There's been a lot of complaints on this fridge and this is just one of many problems. I hope you are able to fix your issue and get your freezer working again! Thanks for watching and commenting.

Glad it was helpful! These things were not designed well
Thanks for the wonderful video . Easy instructions. We had to use 3 cups of water to thaw the drain
Glad it worked for you!
I thought that drain valve looked gross. But mine was even worse, I soaked mine in some dawn dish soap and hot water and it clean up very nicely! Thanks for a great video 👍
Same!
Yeah, they can get gross quickly if not cleaned regularly!
Yeah, I think you are right about that! Glad you were able to fix it!
Very helpfull video, thank you so much! I fixed my refrigerator :)
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much I was dealing with that now almost 3 months thanks nice and helpful video
You are welcome!
Thank you for the video . How long does this fix work for ?
Mine lasted about a year. I didn’t end up changing out the defrost line. And since then I’ve had no issues. But it is a lot of work to get that out and does cost quite a bit of money.
A good and useful item I use to defrost drain lines in refrigerators is I use a steamer I got from orchard supply with the protruding spout. It gets in there real good and you can usually blast out the ice pretty quick. And you can hear the pitch change as it's going which is kinda satisfying. If you don't have 1 or don't wanna buy 1, a turkey blaster can force the hot water in there and pressure helps too.
Great tips! Thank you. I’m sure this will be helpful for others who have this problem too!
I’m about to try this right now! OMG thank you so much for this detailed video.
You are so welcome! Best of luck on your project.
Thank you for the video, sir! Really helpful
My problem is it keeps building up that ice like every week even though i cleaned up the ice that and the back...what could the issue?
Thanks so much! I appreciate you watching and commenting!
It might be a faulty defrost line. It is the metal part behind the plastic wall you take off.
Very clear instructions and easy to do. Thank you. The issue I'm having is that after I did all of this. The line from the inside to the back/bottom is still clogged. I've been putting hot water in the tray on the inside and it just sits there. I've had the fridge unplugged for almost two hours. What ever ice in that line should have melted by now. What do I do?
I would try a hair dryer or heat gun in low. Or adding very hot water to it.
@@MCFIXIT I didn't have a hair dryer or heat gun. So what I ended up doing was to take a narrow bottle brush and pushed down through the drain and it cleared that clog. Everything is good now.
That's definitely another option! I'm glad to hear you got it worked out! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Very helpful thank you great video
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks fur the video it happened my refrigerator. Do you know hi long it will take for the refrigerator and freezer to get a cooler temperature? And when will the ice start making?
It did not take long…. Maybe 30 mins.
Thanks for commenting and watching my video!
Thanks man! This was a big help! Liked and Subscribed!
Thanks so much! I appreciate the sub too!
Great vid 👍
Thank you!
Great video and it was very easy. Appreciate the help. 😊
You're welcome! So glad to hear it helped. Have a great day and thanks for watching and commenting!
Very useful, thanks!
Thanks so much! Have a great day!
So glad you got it fixed. Glad my vid was helpful for your issue. Sediment buildup can be a big issue on these refrigerators!
thanks..you saved me a big service charge :)
You are welcome. Glad it was helpful. Have a good weekend!
Excellent video. Thanx!!
Thanks so much!!!
Excellent video
Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
@@MCFIXIT will do!
Great instructions! This helped a ton! Thank you!
Great to hear!
Thank you! My freezer is working properly and it was so easy following along with you while doing it myself.
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hi beautiful princess!!!! Were you able to fix it 2 months ago and still running good? I have to work on mine probably tomorrow or the day after. Thank you. Have a good night and Happy New Year by the way. Greetings from Tucson Arizona 🌵🌞🌵
@@leonnegro4504 It's still working great!
@@teishaw8715 Did you have any problems after you plug it back in? Or you didn't unplug it? Thank you.
great vid. dude I have same problem but my panel only has 4 screws ? I didn't see any plastic caps? couldn't get the panel off
Try prying lightly and you might be able to see where the other fasteners are located. Be careful bc Samsung makes everything out of plastic and it’s not that durable!
U R the man!
Thanks for the comment and for watching my video!
Thank You!! I just did this today. Took it over 10 years to clog. I ended up cutting a little bit of that squished piece that was clogged. So hopefully it doesn't happen again.
Congratulations! This is a pretty common issue and glad your has done was well as it has. Thanks for commenting and watching my video!
Super helpful. Thank you!!
You are welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting!
We have this issue with our freezer and was excited when I saw this video. We followed all the steps and were hoping to solve the problem. Unfortunately, the next morning, there was already more ice build up. Any other ideas?? I appreciate it!
You may have a bad door seal if it came back that fast! Is there any frost on items in the freezer?
@@MCFIXIT I only put a few items back in so far but no extra build up on those things or anything else. Might go back in and double check the water is draining properly and that nothing else is getting in the way.
@@stussycat77 Did you ever figure out what it was?
@@stardust818 something was obstructing the drain tube. Could have been a piece of food, or a piece from the drain. 😬🤷🏼♀️ It froze in there somewhere. We still have no idea what it was but we noticed right away when it cleared and haven’t had a problem since
Thanks ! You help me so much ! Big regards
You are welcome! So glad it helped you!
I learned too. Thanks!
You are welcome, thanks for watching!
Would it be wise to take the back panel off first to check and see if the hose that you pulled off and water gushed out before removing the panel inside. ?
Thanks your video it’s very helpful thank you very much
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
hi MC FIX IT this same Samsung refrigerator in this video , there is ice building up on top behind the back panel ? what to do or is this more than I can repair and need a new refrigerator ?
Sadly, that’s how everything is being made anymore. We are definitely in a throw away era.
@@MCFIXIT so true
Great video! Checked out the back of the fridge first and the tubes weren't blocked. But then opened up the inside panel and used the boiling water and after about 10 mins the blockage was cleared. I easily had a 1 to 1-1/2 inches of frozen water under the bottom drawer before I started this project. Hoping that it doesn't start building up immediately!
Glad to hear it was helpful. I hope it doesn’t build up again as well
THANK YOU 🎉🎉🎉🎉
You are welcome!
More helpful than Samsung help line
Thanks so much! Yeah, their online help is not that great. I'm glad you found the video helpful!
Thanks!
Hello! Sounds like you have a defrost line issues but it’s hard to tell without being there in person.
Thank you so much!!!
You are welcome! Thanks for commenting and watching. It means a lot!
Hard to believe but long ago we used to have LIFETIME warranties on some appliances.
Should spread the Word about Samsung fridges!!!
I am surprised that you did not brush/vacumn the external fins before putting everything back together. Lot dust makes coils less efficient.
Definitely a great options when back there. I believe I mentioned this and did it at another time very close to after recording this video. I’ve often got complaints on my videos when I do things like this bc they say it takes up too much time.
Awesome info - but buddy buy a small screw drill… lol. Thanks for taking time to make the video. Appreciate it!
Thanks! I’ve got them. I didn’t have it out for this video bc there’s only a few you’ve got to remove.
Thank you 🙏
You’re welcome 😊
After doing this does this reset my ice maker or how long does it take to have ice again?
There is no need to reset. I have not needed to redo this since I recorded.
Tge black hose nearest to the draun hole is the heater for the freezer fins and you can wrap around a copper wire and coonect it to the drain hole so whenever it starts freezing up atleast the drain is open
Great tip! Thanks for adding this!
thank you so much
You're welcome!
My Samsung side-by-side freezer has ice in the bottom. I may need to try this project.
Good luck on your project!
Thanks a lot!
You're welcome!
Mine does it repeatedly even after doing this process. Worse fridge ever
I’ve done this several times and it still plugs up and overfills into my freezer. I even enlarged the drain pipe rubber outlet holes!
It might be your defrost freezer line. It’s fixable but does take more time, tools, and about a $200 part for a new line. I am not a fan of Samsung fridge/freezers.
Same with me, frustrating...I am at the point of buying a new freeze. What is the permanent fix for this?
Ty so much!
You are welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting! I appreciate it!
Does this issue effect the ice maker from making ice and freezing food solid?
No it doesn’t cause that in my experience. It was more of just ice forming and being annoying more than anything.
@@MCFIXIT thank you! I had the ice build up and followed the directions in your video. However now my freezer temp is beeping and flashing H1 and will not make ice. Any suggestions?
I’ve not had that issue before. Sorry, not sure I can help you.
Did you have to remove the ice maker?
Not for this application! If you need to replace the entire defrost heater line then yes. I’ll have a video out soon for that.
You are welcome! Thanks for commenting and watching. It means a lot!
But why is it doing this? Is it that defroster that goes around the coils? Did it on the fridge side.
Yeah, the defrost is behind the freezer on mine. I think it’s a design flaw that’s causing it. I’ve never had anything like this go wrong on the fridge side.
Thank you I fix mine.
Glad it worked for you! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Any tips on how to replace that freezer light 💡🥴?
Sorry, I have not tackled that project yet, because it's still working... knock on wood!
What do you do if you can't access the drain from the back of the freezer ? I have a bottom drawer freezer.
Sorry, I have not worked on those particular models. Id look for some screws and see if there is an access port on them. Good luck on your project!
Or maybe see if the drawer pulls out. You might have access it it behind the drawer.
Do you think this would work by defrosting (unplugging) the freezer for a day or so? Do that the ice would melt and unclog the drain?
I don’t blame you. Thanks for these helpful tips! I’m certain it will help someone on their adventure with this fridge!
I wonder if that white piece is a design flaw since it seems to get plugged up in most of the refrigerators.
I'm certain that it is! There's been a lot of complaints on this fridge and this is just one of many problems. I hope you are able to fix your issue and get your freezer working again! Thanks for watching and commenting.
