- Today we dive into English rock band The Charlatans. In May 1990, "The Only One I Know" was released as the lead single from their debut studio album SOME FRIENDLY. It was their first top-10 hit, reaching No. 9 on the UK Singles Chart!

So it was 1990 when this came out, I was 18. Prime teen years. On days off I would head to "Barker's Baggies" in Cardiff, South Wales. Grab a pair of BAGGY jeans and a polo shirt. "Sorted". Then at night off with my friend to some of the clubs and bars around the city. It was a time ! The Manchester Scene/60s revival in the UK was wonderful (and the kind of thing that is due to come around again imo). Putting it simply, this was an anthem.

Great that you reacted to this, it was a huge hit in 1990, like you mentioned it was part of the the late 80s early 90s Manchester scene but also a part of the rave scene across the UK - The Stone Roses, The Charlatans, Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets and in London you had Primal Scream and Flowered Up to name a few.... I was never a big fan of Flowered Up but their last ever track 'Weekender' was brilliant, remixed by Andy Weatherall, the video to the song was a brilliant short film kind of pop video, the video/song was about the end of that whole scene and the casualties of it! Really worth checking out!!!...Another great band at that time was 'Saint Etienne' on the same label as Flowered Up. 👍

I have seen The Charlatans live loads of times. I was obsessed with them when I was a teenager and I was madly in love with Tim Burgess the lead singer. This is all part of the indie/madchester scene. Same time as The Stone Roses and The Happy Mondays etc
They are a trippy band, but this very early track isn't particularly. Try, Then. The extended if you can find it. The genre btw, is Indie, which came from New Wave, which came from Punk.

I saw them in 1991ish and i have no memory of it except getting past the bouncers
Maybe try a reaction on a band called The Music, songs like getaway, the people and take the long road. They don’t get the credit they deserve.
