A classic tune, still sounds great 30 years later and possibly the best track I have ever heard Live. I am the Resurrection is my personal favourite from an incredible album.
Stone Roses were the first mainstream band to introduce many people to the "Manchester" Scene in the UK during the 90s. Nowadays it would be simply labelled "indie". I was a fan. Stone Roses at least on this album were quite unique, even though drawing from a ton of obvious influences but mostly late 60s/early 70s psychedelic music, The Byrds and maybe even the "Northern Soul" sound. During the 90s there was a 60's revival trend which can be seen all across music from the time, for example at the polar opposite of the musical spectrum - De La Soul also fitted into the 60s revival.
Was one of my favourite songs when i was a teen. Actually had it on cassette on repeat. One thing is the outro was cut far to early in the video, and its the best bit!
This wasn't actually on the album, it came out as a stand alone single in 1990 (I think). It's been included on subsequent re-releases of the album. You should check out Waterfall next!
Glad you got around to reacting to this one. Total vibe song. There was an epic alternative/ new wave radio station here in the 80’sc called CFNY. I believe this was the song of the year at the time.
You should listen to the full version ..white dudes in northern England learned that they were allowed to dance post industrial Manchester .. and they were just like the lads in the street - that’s what made them really special , they said if we can play and do it , so can you ;) Timeless and the real deal
The scene the Stones Roses came from was loosely called Madchester after the place Manchester that several bands came from. It was tied up in the rave scene & use of ecstasy (MDMA) as a party drug. Lots of very groove heavy dance tracks got made most very long. You played an edited version of this song (or cut it down) the best version is the full version at over 9 & a half minuites long. I think you would have liked that more. A lot of the best music from this period came out as remixes that would fill up the capacity of what a compact disk or vinyl could hold. It was not unusual to find a track tucked away on a CDsingle to be over 20mins.
The genre was basically called “Madchester”. Other bands that came out at the time in this genre were Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets, The Charlatans UK, James, and 808 State. The Happy Mondays were probably the next biggest with “Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches” which is another must hear classic album.
I Am the Resurection is a great mixture of the dance elements of SR and the softer, not lyrically but musically first half. The whole album is just fantastic . This album, NMH itaots is another, Jesus and Mary Chains Psychocandy, Echo and the Bmen Crocodiles and about 14 Bowie albums cant live without them. Ever heard Black Grape? Another baggy pant fantastic band. Anyway, thank you guys!
That break beat is a manchester sound standard..hugely influenced thebrave scene in the UK...this band is so eclectic funky, soulful lyrics, dancable, retro but futuristic...they were amazing..
Manchester already had great Indie bands in the mid 80's with The Smiths (There is a Light that Never goes Out) ua-cam.com/video/3r-qDvD3F3c/v-deo.html and New Order (Blue Monday) ua-cam.com/video/FYH8DsU2WCk/v-deo.html, both mid 80's and well before the Manchester scene exploded (The Smiths and New Order were already creating sounds that would be mixed in later years). The fusion 'funky vibe' around 1989 came from a mosh of Chicago House, Acid House, Indie and previous vibes from the 60''s/70's that all amalgamated into Indie bands creating very unique sounds. That amalgamation created a 5 year scene from 1989-1994 (Pre Brit Pop) that made Manchester the centre of the music world (certainly outside the US). The Happy Mondays also picked up on this and were probably the closest to mixing House with Indie with Hallejuhah ua-cam.com/video/IAEcU-cxUGM/v-deo.html. I love it but I prefer the Stone Roses but I appreciate they probably amalgamated the different genres better than any Manchester band in that era. Great Reaction. Your comments on being enhanced were bang on, Ecstasy had a massive influence on music in Manchester during that period which became known as Madchester.
The hat over here, at least in the North, is called a Reni hat. Named after that drummer. Who, actually went to the school down the road from my school, the school we used to scrap with. He'd left just before I started though.
Huge album. Without the Stone Roses there wouldn't have been so many other bands, as they were a major influence to British Music. It's a tragedy that not many outside of the UK know who they were.
This wasn't actually originally on the album...they recorded this a few months after the album was released and eventually included it on the re-issue.
Love this song, the sound is similar to The Charlatans early sound, which I love. Both bands released their first albums in 1990 so must have been the vibe at that time.
second coming - album 2 has a different vibe but just as good imo, you should do one from the second album, ''daybreak'' ''love spreads'' or 'driving south' maybe
Brilliant song from a brilliant album, the version you played isn't the full version though... the full length album version is 10 mins long and goes in to a trippy guitar funk climax, another great songs from the album is 'Waterfall' and 'this is the one' 🙂
Another great reaction to a great band lads 🔥 🔥 ...Check out Waterfall ,Elephant stone and also check out the Happy Mondays-Step on or Happy Mondays Halilujah
Quint it's really surprising that you didn't hear this at the time. My CD is almost 35 years old now! Now for a completely different direction .. how about Lenny Kravitz - Black Velveteen?
It's heavily influenced by ecstasy and early dance music , John leckie produced it and he told Ian to sing it like he was preaching at a rave , the drum beat is from an early hip hop record
The drums are actually a loop of Hot Pants (bonus beats) by Bobby Byrd.....everyone had a copy back in the day. A mate of mine did some work for John Squire years ago..... John said Fool's Gold was a subtle nod to Young MC's Know How, which used to get hammered at the Hacienda.....all the main elements are the same - breakbeat drums, funky wah guitar and virtually identical basslines.
Nice one dudes! But I’m a bit gutted you didn’t catch the full version… Which has a 5 minute instrumental. You boys missed out big time! If you didn’t feel it warranted a return, then the live version at Heaton park is very different, but also with a long instrumental
Fools Gold is 9.53 and it's a trip, you have listened to the radio edit. ... You might also be overlooking the lyric... which is consistent throughout the band's career. Integrity over profit. Search for interviews with the band - please - there are 2. one just before they blew up ( which is hilarious because Ian and John are both stoned out of their tree ) and the announcement of the reunion tour - that's it. Let the music speak.. the less you say, the more it speaks for itself.
Stone Roses took that old 60's/70's classic rock/funk/soul formula and added a sprinkling of dance music feel on the beat and layered it all with plenty of laid back punk and attitude. It has a natural irony to it where the music soothes you but the lyrics have you sticking 2 fingers up at the world. It's a winning formula that is sadly lacking in much of today's music as that subtlety gets lost these days in my view - if you are hearing attitude in modern music usually it is very over the top and obvious in both the sound and the lyrics, it has to be right in your face (which is fine too but gets boring quickly), or if you're hearing pleasant vibes then they're inevitably singing about love and happiness or something. Not the Roses, they could chill you out, get you in a groove and still have you raising your middle finger
This is probably the band's best known song but it's not really representative of most of their material. At the time, white indie rock bands in the UK were absorbing the vibe (and chemicals) of the emerging rave scene. The resulting music was was classified as Indie-Dance and it provided a gateway for indie kids to get into dance music. For other examples of the genre, you might want to listen to "The only one I know" by The Charlatans or "Loose fit" by Happy Mondays.
They could have been the biggest band in the world if they wanted too, they just really didn't seem to care. They remind me of Oasis in some ways - sort of dysfunctional in their behaviour but enormously talented. Less overtly hostile than Oasis but less willing to engage with the press and media in almost any way positive or negative - I saw a press thing once where they went 5 or 10 minutes without giving an answer of more than one word.
I love the stone roses, but there was never a chance of them becoming the biggest band in the world. I mean, at that time we had the likes of, guns & roses, bon jovi, U2, rem, def leppard, judas priest, iron maiden, Metallica and AC/DC. They're monster bands with some of the biggest selling album's in history. And they still sell out stadiums the world over.
@@TheRetroManRandySavage - Look nobody thought U2 was going to become the biggest band in the world and then Bono goes into the crowd at Live Aid at Philadelphia and created a moment that changed everything. With the Stone Roses they had the talent but not the attitude, had they had the right attitude you can see what happened with Oasis and see how that could have been them, the world was primed for that sort of music. The Stone Roses simply didn't display the personalities to engage with that wider audience so it never happened for them.
You only played half of the song.....this wasn't on their debut album which is one of the greatest ever....ps Play the full version whist been somewhere lively and had a few beers
Bucket hats were made famous from this band. They started the trend. No Stone Roses, no Oasis, Oasis copied them so much, both Noel and Liam have spken about it before
One of the UK's elite bands and one of the greatest albums ever made...period.
I reckon the stone roses first album is easily up their in history with Abby road I mean both 10/10
Amen brother 🇬🇧🇬🇧💓
It really is.
If you don't have a copy then there's quite honestly something wrong with you
Here, here!

yeah - waterfall is the standout track on the debut album
On the 8th day
God made the Stone Roses
I feel blessed to be 15 in 1989

The Happy Mondays and The Stone Roses were part of the Madchester scene out of Manchester. It was indie and rave meshed together. It was incredible.
And oasis 👍
@@garryleeks4848 Oasis came later
@@aquablushgirl yes 4 years later, Definitely maybe 👍
Yep I used to walk around Norwich thinking I was from Manchester 😂 great days
Top Tier - hands down the full version of this is, has and always will be in my top 100 of all time. Fuggin Perfection.
If rock is about feel, then The Stone Roses are right up there.
Great reaction ... love 'voice in the mist'. Really captures the trippy feel

all UK readers - do you remember when the album came on in 1989 ? opening track " I wanna be adored"? Music changed that day......

Ride were great live see them a couple of times here in Norwich
Reni is the best drummer of my lifetime.

cant wait to share this with my son
As you you like his singing, you should also check out Ian Brown on the UNKLE albums, eg. "Reign" the 5.33 version. It'll blow your mind.

The Charlatans certainly stepped in when the Roses disappeared and made some fantastic records.

One of the defining bands of a generation people still talk about spike Island to this day
I think Fools Gold was only on the American version of the album as it was released after the album in the U.K. (and went to no.1)
The tune is fire!

You should react to the live version at Heaton Park it’s outstanding
The "enhanced version" is the 9 minute 12" version 😉
This was a stand alone single recorded before the debut album. I think it was 1988??
Try a track from the lp Bummed by Happy Mondays , made by people who were " enhanced " both the band and producer were smashed during the recording.
The album long version is so much better. Worth another reaction
It was never on the first album in the UK. The extended version was released as a twelve inch after its release.
4:38 hahahaha
