Hi! "Apps only Mode" for Google TV should help. Then, there are the usual tips and tricks for Android devices to keep the same level of performance as at the beginning. Also, Tizen and WebOS are supposed to be Open source projects.
Sony has a very good track record of updating TVs. In my case, I have a 2018 model that came with Android 7 and is now running Android 9 and its latest security patch is from 2022.
Sony definitely is one of the best! With that said, wouldn't it be much better if a TV from 2018 could have updates for 7 years? Even if you are super into TVs and have disposable income you are not looking for TV upgrades sooner than 4-5 years and that is far from how most people upgrade TVs.
I love my dumb TV. When I bought it years ago I specifically shopped for one with no native connectivity so that I had control over what was connected to my TV. Sadly, it seems like this is no longer an option as noone wants to sell you something without some sort of dystopian corporate control.
I have an LG TV from 2014 that has basically no "smart" features. It has youtube and Netflix and a VERY basic version of WebOS, remember, it's from 2014, 10 years old. The reasons you brought up in this video is why I am still holding on to it after all these years and why I am dreading to get a new TV, I have an Android TV box that works well enough so I don't need a smart tv
TV technology has been evolving over the years. I agree with you that "smart" features are definitely not enough to consider upgrading, but image quality sure is. I went from a 2011 Toshiba LCD Full HD TV to a 2022 Hisense MiniLED 4K TV, and the difference was abysmal; it was a revelation. Don't consider upgrading for the smart features, but for the image quality and technologies like HDR10+ or Dolby Vision.
@@eefm99 Even though it's from 2014 it's still 4K so I don't see a reason to upgrade for a better image quality either. Sure I could get an HDR tv or an OLED tv but I don't really care about that
I'm so glad someone made a video on this topic. I've been saying for years that I just want a "dumb TV"! Both my Samsung and LG smart TVs are slow and stopped receiving updates. I got a Chromecast 4K in one TV and a 4k Fire stick in the other.....
Once Google started to show video ads on the mtf home screen I disabled automatic updates and reverted the launcher version to the pre installed on the TV.
Exactly why I don't buy any newer smart TVs. I'd much rather keep my regular TVs and use a Fire TV stick or Roku. Having all of that software on a TV that won't get updated over time is just a huge waste.
Not just ads, it's all about product differentiation and feature packing for TVs to stand out in retailers. If you don't have smart TV features you're just competing with low-margin, low-cost brands like TCL and Hisense (or even worse, store brands) which will kill you on cost and scale. I agree as I still use a dumb TV and TV boxes are awful, if you're willing to consider proprietary alternatives a game console would work. Or maybe even a phone with HDMI-out via USB-C.
Tizen OS rocks been using it for 5 years, UA-cam, Netflix, osn, disney, and lots of other streaming apps works so well and OS is so light and I seriously won't need anything smarter than these apps running smoothly.

it would be nice to see a snapdragon 8 gen1 on a TV under $2000. even a 2022 flagship soc only in 2 or 3 lineups is sad if looking for a premium 2024 experience.
I often ask myself, why do people want smart TV? my phone already does whatever smart feature it has, Playstation and XBOX can usually do what smart TV does plus they do gaming well. So why smart TV? Hell, the most common reason why non-tech users buy smart TV is "To play Netflix." Why do we need a robust OS for THAT?
Being in the UK I can find any 40"+ dumb TVs I even searched forv1080p only still nothing it sucks. All I want is a big dumb TV with all the good stuff HDR Dolby etc and a TV box that supports all those features and apps I wanna use. why is it so rubbish for TVs 😞
The only non smart tv that I could find for myself was from best buy canada! An Insignia 40 inch 1080P around the $200 range! They are very hard to find!
I've been looking for normal tvs when I bought mine, frustrating to see they don't make em, had to buy a good Philips which is not android but idc because I use my ps5 as a media center
I have a 10 years old phillips 1080p 60Hz flat screen TV that I got basically for free, connected to a Nvidia shield. I could not be happier, exept for that stupid remote with the giant "Netflix" button .
Here's an idea, you can make a sticker for that button and reprogram it to anything else you use more frequently! Is it ideal? Absolutely not ahah But I have done that for some family members in the past that wanted it :)
This rant is spot on ! However, I try helping myself. I have recently discovered an Ad-free Launcher, Projectivity, which is great. This in combination with some tweaks in the Developer Options and disabling some bloatware, for the time being, everything is running very smooth😊. Remaining problem is the lack of security patches as you rightly mention. I don't have a solution for this either.😢
The custom launcher is THE way to go if you want to remove ads from the home screen (even though a lot of the tracking for said ads is still happening on the background) However, I am a big big proponent of raising awareness for changing defaults. Most people don't care to change anything. It took me 2 days with this TV to give up and google how I could ADB wirelessly to remove apps that it wouldn't allow me to, stop services that I don't want and take control of my TV. But even if I could do that (thank god for android in that sense) it only made me feel more for the people that simply don't know this is even a possibility. As for the security angle, that is of course a concern and I believe only more streamlined hardware could help in that front, but once again PEOPLE HAVE TO CARE. It's great that these days a lot of android manufacturers are promising loooong software support for devices, but it took them years of people slowly realizing apple was doing this for them to care enough to do that. (also other factors definitely played a part, not just apple of course)
It's so damn annoying. These TV makers just dole of expensive nonsense and expect us to buy. Honestly, I'd rather just buy a regular TV without the "smart" and connect my streaming device to it. I have a Hisense TV I bought in July 2021 and it has NEVER gotten any OS update ever since purchase. It's been stuck on Android TV OS 9.
You should have got Sony. I’ve got a 10 year old Sony and its last software update was last year. Having said that i have a fire stick and Apple TV installed on mine so I might just factory reset it and not connect to WiFi
Really a spot on content. I searched for a non smart LED TV in 2022, but none available. Hence i was forced to buy an android tv but the performance is mediocre from the day one. Since i was using an iPhone i bought an apple tv 4k streamer. It completely changed the way i use the TV. Hence my opinion is if you’ve an iphone/ipad or mac go for apple tv 4k it’s far better than any other streaming devices
A sad, sad state of affairs in 2024. It's probably the tech purchase most people end up keeping for the longest period of time (the TV) and often it is the one we just accept it's slow from day 1. Kind of arguing against myself here, but a lot of the computing hardware on a smart TV would still have to be there in some capacity even if it was a "dumb" TV. A ton of good things come from it, whether it is good image processing (and also the bad one ahah), but also just something so simple as plugging in a PS5 to a TV requires a lot of bandwidth to pass through the video and audio. We take that for granted. But like I said on the video, unless people care for a change, companies are more than happy just keeping the revenue coming in from the ads and the lack of software support long term.
we got a smart TV before we could actually _use_ a smart TV (rural America 🤪 ) by the time we got high speed Internet through our electric coop the window to update the smart TV had closed 🤦 we had been using an old school Chromecast, which was functional (except for Apple TV, which I had to mirror screen to watch 😬 ) but the Chromecast with remote control works *really* great ! 👍✌️🖖
I have a dumb TV with a Fire TV Cube hooked up to it. You're right. If you can buy a cheaper TV and plug a box into it, why buy a top of the line TV? The only thing that makes me want to upgrade my TV is that I don't have 4K in the TV, but I have it in the Cube.
I wonder if LG Display and Samsung Display engineers have G4s and S95Ds with dumb OS and an Apple TV or Nvidia Shield connected to them to bypass the bad OS their clients install on them.
ahahah of course they do! Imagine going to work on a PANEL and having random ads shoved in your face for no reason. Also, beyond that the work being done by the display teams is often focused on executing the hardware for the panel and then the manufacturers still have to actually drive the panels according to what they want. So software is probably far from the day-to-day operation of the display engineers.
My previous TV was Sony with Android. Out of the box it was already slow and the incredible speed at which it became utter useless was ridiculous. Current TV is a flagship Samsung I've owened for about 3yrs now. It's also very slow but the worst part is, what used to be a seamless transition onto Samsungs own channels, to now having various annoying and pointless banners, icons and some stupid menu gui interface which nobody asked for and I'm sure few use. It only makes things slow much, much faster. Horrible. My next TV will be LG. I'll give them a try. 🤞
I wouldn't cross my fingers too hard on that one, ahahah Truth is, every single brand is doing this, there is absolutely nothing you can do to improve your experience. Hardware and software wise the differences are minimal in practice, most of their development is on their custom chips for image processing and that has very little to do with general user experience and quality of life.
google chromecast 4k and i believe the google streamer or the onn box 4k and the onn google tv 4k pro box offer an app only mode - which makes the interface more snappy and less cluttered - or you can install a custom launcher and problem solved
I have a Sony Android TV that is not connected to the internet and on which I only run the Google TV streamer (previously Chromecast). The manufacturers of televisions are just as incapable of delivering decent systems as those of cars 😅
I have been using tv's just for their display for years. I vahe always used chromecast or android sticks to use the apps. And to be honest, if you are complaining that the services are slow for about a few seconds you are nuts.
If you disable all ADs on Web OS it becomes simple app launcher which is snappier than my Chromecast with google TV 4k, and unlike android Tv there really are no ADs left. Im not offended but this is just misinformation.
I agree 100% on everything said in the video . They can put a budget mediatek 8 core cpu or a good quadcore cpu with 2.0 + Ghz and a decent gpu and make all android apps work on the tv properly . Play store is restricted in app department there too and you have to resort in sideloading some apps . Smart aspect of the tv's really suck .
The sideloading really is one of the main reasons why if you are tech inclined, Android TV still offers a big advantage vs the Apple TV as a platform. But for most people, that is a completely foreign concept.
@@carlosribeiroo in android 15 if i'm correct google will restrict sideloading unfortunately . Not sure in which version of android tv that will happen if it happens 😬. Sideloading is the best part of android and i don't like the direction it goes . In android 14 google restricted sideloading legacy apps (you have to use ADB tools to unlock that feature ) . EU forced Apple to allow 3rd party app stores and sideloading while google goes on the opposite direction . Hope EU slaps them in time .
@@danielivanov930 I honestly feel worried at how google is trending in the last 5 years? It really felt like for the longest time, Android was choice and Apple was lack of choice. But slowly choice is being forced down Apple's throat and choice is being taken away on Android for seemingly no benefit to consumers
Buy cheap used Samsung s7 or s8 plus and above for less than 100usd and convert it to android box. That's how I escaped all these nightmare TV boxes and android TV.
Because Roku is just as bad, if not worse, than all of these "smart" TVs. They are pushing more and more ads on you to the point where they're trying to show them on your TV if you just have it plugged into your Roku (and aren't even using it) via HDMI. Roku is cancer.
I have tried using a Roku on my LG TV since web os is so bad and initially it was pretty good, but over time they have gotten over run with garbage too.
I'm the same as you in the UK. I got a Philips OLED. I love it. I love the ambilight. Use the onboard Android for a bit and it was rubbish. Probably about a year and a half now. I've just got an Android TV streamer and it's brilliant and I've got projectivity launcher and turn on the TV and it goes straight to that input. It's brilliant.
Just bought a sony 65 inch tv with android and yes I was wondering the same damn thing, just give us the monitor only without any processor inside, so we can save some money and buy a streaming box with it.
Here is a thought, a little contrarian to what I said on the video, but here goes. Chances are, even in an ideal world, the TV will not become cheaper. Image processing is a big task, and often times the hardware is doing double duty on a TV. Sony's is notorious for doing a ton of heavy lifting with their custom Bravia chips, but you still need to handle IO for things like external devices. Any HDMI 2.1 device like a console/PC or an external box will need 32-48gbps of bandwidth to handle passing through the video and audio signal, and that is not trivial to do. Like with most things worth discussing, there are multiple small caveats that make this conversation complex and intricate. But at the end of the day, I felt this video would resonate with people out there is because any change will only happen if a lot of people raise their voices. The sad truth is, most people are simply fine with being shoved ads in their face at every waking moment. Given the fact that a TV has to have all the hardware to process the image and audio, they might as well use that to make more revenue.
Yup. Have a Fire TV, didn't realise you couldn't do anything at all with it until you used an Amazon account. Barely space to add any apps without external USB storage. It's become painfully slow to use. Not recommended. Please, let's go back to dumb TVs. Or even PC monitors.
You are not alone calling me out on that one! I hear people like them, but I have simply never used one personally so I can't really comment on them unfortunately.
Despite the age the Tegra X1+ on the Shield TV 2019 is way better than the smartphones you mentioned that released the same year, since the X1+ is model made on a better (newer) node. Heck, is still more powerful than mid range devices of at least last year gpu wise, cpu wise is already being defeated but is still is more powerful than low end and mid gen by a lot with the exception of mid high ones, specially considering android tv boxes even ones by google, are worse than low end range phones.
Hey! I get your point and all that is true, mostly because the form factors are all so different. The shield is much closer to a Nintendo Switch than it is to a smartphone. And don't get me wrong I still point people to the Shield in 2024, I just don't think it is a top of the line device any more (even thought it still is the best choice in 2024) It is still as good as it was in 2019 buuuuut it should be a lot better if it was given a proper upgrade.
There's your mistake. Sony would have a far better SOC and Android experience. Not to mention they continually update their units. Complete that with a Pihole and you get ZERO ads on any TVs. No tracking, just a all around best experience. I have one Sony that is 3 years old still gets updates from Sony. I also for a living deal with all the major brands for my FT job. Trust me end of the day Sony is where it's at!
Hey! Sony is amongst the best for sure when it comes to software updates, but it is still common place to find sluggish performance during day to day tasks even with higher end models. Since a ton of brands use the same core SOC. Even in this comment section, you will find people sharing this same experience of mediocre performance with their Sony TV. Is it better than other brands? Often times, Absolutely! But that isn't a compliment to Sony but more of a critic to the industry as a whole. Also regarding the pihole or other router based DNS ad blockers, it is simply not that simple. You can block certain domains and get a better, more controlled experience with ads, but you can't remove them from the UI completely, they will just be less relevant to your usage. If I don't use my TV for 2 weeks and turn it on, the UI will not have any ads, but it will find a way to get something displayed there in no time, even with domains blocked. It is just entrenched in how the TV operates, akin to how UA-cam injects ads into the video feed that are not removed with DNS trickery.
I don't see it buuuuut I take that as the absolute biggest compliment. Imagine you came in here and said I look like literally any other Lannister. THAT, my friend, THAT would have been rude.

Glad I’m not alone in feeling like my TCL’s operating system is complete garbage. I plugged in a Chromecast and use that for the smarts instead 😅
I'm glad it's not just me that called out the sponsored buttons on the remote
Absolutely not alone on that one! It is one worst side effects of this entire problem!
People still use the TV’s OS instead of an AppleTV or Google TV? That’s like telling me you still watch traditional satellite television
Absolutely not ahah
But I have done that for some family members in the past that wanted it :)
i have a phillips tv and agree wholeheartedly. the "smart" functions get in the way and drive me mad.
The custom launcher is THE way to go if you want to remove ads from the home screen (even though a lot of the tracking for said ads is still happening on the background)
However, I am a big big proponent of raising awareness for changing defaults.
Yes but your non-4k TV will not output 4k even if the cube has it.
I wouldn't cross my fingers too hard on that one, ahahah
Truth is, every single brand is doing this, there is absolutely nothing you can do to improve your experience.
Not me admired he has sic opto and rtp play on the tv 🤔
*sera que este socio sera tuguinha? :)

I have a Sony Android TV that is not connected to the internet and on which I only run the Google TV streamer (previously Chromecast). The manufacturers of televisions are just as incapable of delivering decent systems as those of cars 😅
ahahah Still think cars are on a league of their own. Some design and functionality in a new Mercedes infotainment is truly out of the early 2000s
They are capable. But the thing is they don't want to, it plain and simple planned obsolescence.
Hopefully there's a massive upgrade to the Nvidia shield
I have been using tv's just for their display for years. I vahe always used chromecast or android sticks to use the apps. And to be honest, if you are complaining that the services are slow for about a few seconds you are nuts.
I avoid the included TV app on my TV like I avoid Bixby on my Samsung. Chromecast is the least worst go-around of the included cr(app), for me.
Samsung or LG Smart TVs are the best
If you disable all ADs on Web OS it becomes simple app launcher which is snappier than my Chromecast with google TV 4k, and unlike android Tv there really are no ADs left. Im not offended but this is just misinformation.
I bought a Philips TV for £500. 18 months later the panel back lights failed. Never buying anything Philips again.
You can install custom launchers
@@carlosribeiroo 👍
Buy cheap used Samsung s7 or s8 plus and above for less than 100usd and convert it to android box.
That's how I escaped all these nightmare TV boxes and android TV.
Everything sucks nowadays 😑
WOW.......😮😮😮😮😮. What a surprise!
my 5 years old sony got updated yesterday (sec patch). performance is not bad
why no mention of Roku as an option?
Honestly, that is a fair question. I simply have never used a Roku product, so that is the only reason why.
Because Roku is just as bad, if not worse, than all of these "smart" TVs. They are pushing more and more ads on you to the point where they're trying to show them on your TV if you just have it plugged into your Roku (and aren't even using it) via HDMI. Roku is cancer.
@@carlosribeiroo Roku is just as bad as Tizen and WebOS. Solid ads. And it's only getting worse.
I have tried using a Roku on my LG TV since web os is so bad and initially it was pretty good, but over time they have gotten over run with garbage too.
It sucks.
My $19 onn android box gets 100% of my none gaming time on my roku tv.
I love samsungs
Bro how is WebOS bad? This guy is tripping. The magic remote is great and almost all mainstream apps are there
Just build a powerful computer and run stock AndroidTV OS on it.
I got a Android TV device from Walmart for $10 and it's better then my smart TV 😭
Yeah our tv been stoping mid UA-cam vid it’s from 2018
You did not mention Roku devices. They are simple and fast streamers.
You are not alone calling me out on that one! I hear people like them, but I have simply never used one personally so I can't really comment on them unfortunately.
buy a large pc monitor
And don't get me wrong I still point people to the Shield in 2024, I just don't think it is a top of the line device any more (even thought it still is the best choice in 2024)
It is still as good as it was in 2019 buuuuut it should be a lot better if it was given a proper upgrade.
smart TVs were never a smart idea. TVs should be like monitors with good speakers
apple tv + kodi = everything i need
thats why i would prever dumb TV,
Webos is good. I initially thought it would be good to have android on LG.
Webos Lg is doing decent
1. Buy an older tv
2. put a fire stick/cube/etc in it
3. jail break it
4. profit
Assuming your hardware can be jailbroken.
1:00 Tizen and WebOS are both open source.
My Nvidia Shield is the best thing to this TV ever.
Just image how nice it would be to get a proper 2024 spec bump 🤤
Google TV streamer and projectivity launcher win win win
I use Ultragear monitor with Mi Box and PS5, who needs TV?
maybe you shouldnt buy philips
Tizen is whack.
Apple TV is the goat
I am happy with my Sony and it’s has never been slow and stuttery….. I end up using my Roku now because I get access to more apps.
The funny thing is most people don't know what the hell you're talking about 😂😂😂... They see big tv with a pretty bright screen they buy lol
dis guy looks like the dwarf from game of thrones
I don't see it buuuuut I take that as the absolute biggest compliment. Imagine you came in here and said I look like literally any other Lannister. THAT, my friend, THAT would have been rude.
I use an Amazon Firecube and it's briiliant!
