Best performance mods for the shields is to use ADB to strip out most of the background tasks and telemetry, replace the launcher with a lightweight customisable option like projectivy, limit background apps to 1 or 2 at most and to kill processes on close in the developer settings, add a high speed external SSD and move your apps to that (so apps like Kodi can have huge, fast metadata stores), then if using Kodi as the main player, add an advanced configuration xml file to allow for full speed, complete file caching to the ssd. it is incredibly fast and responsive after doing that.
@@BFArch0n More space for allowing apps like Kodi to cache to disk (look up advanced settings xml to make kodi cache full files to disk over the network as fast as possible, instead of a few meg at a time), it also allows for faster app launches with a decent SSD and much faster local metadata libraries/caches in media apps like Plex and Jellyfin, scrolling through thousands of movies is still reliant on the server the first time, but once its cached it's seamless. I haven't yet run a disk speed test but it is definitely more responsive in terms of random read/write at least.
1) keep clicking on cached in internal storage many times, till it drops to about 50mb. You need 2gb free storage or at least 1.5gb for smooth running. 2) Nvidia throttles WiFi often (with our workout VPN) to about 15mbps, in networks click RESTART WI-FI, test & Wi-Fi speed goes up much more. This is a big they need to fix in updates
Thanks for the vid! Just a tip: ethernet is a standard for systems to talk to each other. WiFi uses ethernet. Wifi is just a wireless option to use ethernet. Just like cabled network (most often, today) uses ethernet.
Thanks for the performance enhancement, it makes all of the difference. Have you ever done an Nvidia full setup video? I want to set up wither a PC media center or NAS box to auto download media?
@@UpgradeGuyTechCool. I’m considering an nvidia shield tv pro. I would like to run my ubooquity comic book server on it. Would you be able to add that to your next nvidia shield video?
I'm real happy with my 2018 Nvidia Shield. Discovered it by accident while looking for a media player. I was looking at Apple TV briefly, not even close.. As far as storage, I installed a low profile microsd card reader with a 256gb card. I adopted the storage to the ridiculously low 16gb it comes with so now I have ple nty of head room. I use the other USB port for a thumb drive to play local movie files. I have VLC player installed as well.
Thank you so much for this video. Looking forward to the full developer options video. Netflix has a built-in speed test . Do you test internet speed when using Express VPN? With other VPNs I see speed drop from 440-450 Mbps down to 11-40 Mbps. Not interested in having to choose between privacy and speed, especially at Express VPN's price. Also, isn't express part of the Kape group? If so, instead of being based in the BVI they're now in a "Five Eyes" country.
I need your help. I bought my nvidia shield 2019. For the last 7months Google play doesn't work, wifi not connected. Please make a video. Every video I see with this problem is for android phones.
Good video bro. But just a fyi. I just recently bought the shield and connection strength indicator on the shield is not accurate. It will drop to good from excellent but this is false all the time. I have my wifi connected with a wifi extender and they are both at excellent connection all the time. And my GeForcenow streams are flawless most of the time. But when it does drop to only a good or even below that to fair my shield will show as excellent or good. Overall the shields wifi is not very good. It’s because of this why I bought an extender. Now the connection stays mostly solid. I didn’t need an extender for any of my devices but for this connection garbage all the time.
I have my TV cleanly flush mounted on the wall with no wires showing. Does the Nvidia shield pro have a usb or Bluetooth hdmi connection or is it a physical cord you would habe to run from the box to your TV? which then presents a problem
I’m thinking about purchasing a Shield Pro but wasn’t sure if I wanted to shell out the $200 for a 2019 streamer that has only hdmi 2.0 and wi-fi 5. I would be connecting it via Ethernet so the wi-fi wouldn’t come into play. Is this device still worth it?
Hey man, Great stuff and usual, very helpful! My current TV doesn't have fully loaded Spotify, with the features available via android or pc. Does Nvidia or any other TV have a fully loaded version of Spotify? Mr Black South Africa
I do wonder if Netflix will ever make themselves VPN proof. How would they do this you ask? Netflix would only allow you to watch something if that show/movie,etc is available in your own country, *and* the country the VPN server you're using is in. ex: If you're in the US and you're using Canadan VPN address, the content has to be available in both the USA and Canada or it's blocked. This would annoy a lot of travelers, but Netflix could do something like that to avoid legal trouble.
Excellent presentation. I just read that Firestick has access to a butt load of new content in an extended menu. There were hundreds of aps in the tv/movie section alone not to mention a large amount of other subjects including sports too. Something you might want to check out. Not all are free or in English but there are more than I have ever seen in one place. Thanks again for another informative and educational episode.

A "wifi extender" is a very bad advice. These extenders can actually worsen the wifi quality. Best choice is to use a decent wireless access point or several if necessary based on the area/layout of the place you live in.
you made the exact same video a couple o months ago with the same things where you also said then that you were going to do a seperate video for the developer options..............

you might want to do a bit more research.......this is definitely not the most powerful android box. I own 2 of them and they are great. I use one as a plexserver and its fantastic.
@@UpgradeGuyTech Correct. If you have a 1Gbit connection in both directions like myself it is almost impossible to saturate, not only is it super CPU hungry even when using wireguard but the peering on most, if not all VPN providers are not really geared for 1 Gbit users. Generally, If you want 100-300 Mbit, most PiA and others are the way to go. I'd also recommend that you try the VPN before spending since most VPNS IP addresses are blocked by Netflix, and continue to be blocked daily. Prime, is almost impossible to GEO switch, it's only a matter of time until Netflix start doing a DNS lookup and resolving the IP address to a hostname and attempt to associate that with a broadband connection. If you have a buddy in the US, and they run a Wireguard Server, and you in the UK run a Wireguard Server, in your home, you fairly likely to get uninterrupted services. For streaming geographic stuff, a home VPN will always beat a commercial one because of the way they purchase IP blocks and how those IPs are shared, and what they resolve as.
I installed a 4TB HDD to my Nvidia shield and spent 1 month torrenting 2.5TB’s worth of Blu-ray quality movies using a VPN 😂 I love it

Yes

You do not need to update, the UI is going to be filled with ads and slow downs
wish i could transfer all the bloatware to the sd card, but it won't let me anymore.
maybe try a factory reset
