I learned this recipe from my Grandmother, as all of her family did. I have made this many times over the years with one addition. I add a whole jar of drained and dried cherries to the mix. No so pink after draining and drying them, but adds beautiful color and taste.
I’m 90 yrs old and we used to this make this 75 y ago. We used sour cream and refrigerated it for 24 hours before the meal. It goes so well with a turkey dinner! I don’t know why, but it was called “ Sister Accie’s Salad”. In later years the grocery stores began making it, and called it Ambrosia.
My grandmother made this but without the coconut because my grandfather could not chew it. She always made it a day before and used sour cream instead of cool whip. The marshmallows made the sour cream sweet. She called it "yum yum". My sister makes it for the family now and calls it ambrosia. 😊
My grandmother made it with the sour cream also ... she also held out a few orange slices to make a flower on top with maraschino cherry center - and a few sprinkled on top! Oh, and she called it 5-C salad and when I was a little kid, i always thought she meant 5 Sea ... I tried for years to figure out the 5 seas each ingredient came from. I can't wait to have it again at Thanksgiving!
My grandma used to make this with crushed pineapple, fruit cocktail, sour cream, coconut flakes . And mini marshmallow ( the colored kind) it’s delicious especially after it sits overnight in frig.
That's how my mom made it too...with sour cream and crushed pineapple but no coconut. It's is definitely part of our traditional holiday meals. Somewhere along the line, someone said the marshmallows turn to puffed air...so we've called it "air salad" ever since...lol
I so enjoyed your "variation" to the 5 cup salad. I grew up with this salad, only served on holidays. But instead of cool whip, it was created with sour cream. Sitting for 24 hours prior to serving, the "sour" of the sour cream was mellowed by the marshmallows. It was ALWAY served in a beautiful ruby and clear cut glass bowl. I'm nearly 70 and still have that bowl. It is ONLY used for the 5 cup salad and again, only on holidays. I've not made this for a few years, but for Thanksgiving this year, I've the ingredients ready (planned to make a couple of weeks ago). I'll bring down the special ruby colored bowl. The memories for me, will be priceless. On a different note, I'll be making Ebleskiver in the pan my great grandmother brought with her from Denmark in the 1880's. It was only made at Christmas for Christmas morning breakfast. I ADORE family traditions for the most part and sharing these with great nephews & nieces only make it more special. Thank you so VERY much for sharing your family recipe.
Such a lovely narration. I will hve to make the sour cream variation of Ambrosia this November. Thanksgiving 🦃 is when I cook a feast. I usually make Potato salad, Macaroni salad recipes given by my late Mil. She is sorely missed. I hve her old dutch oven for cooking soup beans. Only used for this and Beef stew. Love recipes frm the 70's, 80's, full of family Love.
Omgoodness... What a wonderful Old Familiar... When my Dad Passed on.... My Grief led me to Get up., Make some black eye peas and sweet cornbread. With 5 cup salad.... A strange comfort for me, I'm Canadian, this isn't really something we eat...Mmmm thanks for the share and memories...
My mom made this every TG too! Only she used diced apples instead of pineapple, sour cream instead of cool whip and she added chopped walnuts and maraschino cherries (chopped very finely and only about 1/2 cup). I didn’t care for sweet cherries either so I always picked them out. (The cherries made it “pretty & did not turn it pink) It was so yummy!!! Great memories… Thanks for sharing! ❤️🙏🙏❤️
@lindam1533 The salad your mother made with the apples, maraschino cherries, walnuts or pecans, celery, and mayonnaise is Waldorf Salad--from the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.
Thank you Tom. I’m so happy I found your channel. My wife has become disabled and I am trying to prepare our meals, and your recipes have helped me so much. Your instruction are detailed and easy to follow which is what I need. The casseroles are my favorite to make. Wish you could tell me how to cook a turkey.😊
My husband helps me too. I am disabled and I fall easily. We use the slow cooker a lot. We cook ham and turkey in ours. We love This channel. Aways know your wife is blessed to have you and your love ❤
If it's a frozen turkey you unthaw in the refrigerator 1 day for every four pounds ( for example a 16 pound turkey would need 4 days to unthaw). I really like to add on a extra day just to make sure it's ready to go. Then remove the packets (neck ,gizzard , giblets etc.) from both cavities, on each end of the turkey. place in your roasting pan( with a cup or two of water in the bottom of pan, if you want to make gravy from the drippings). Next, slather the outside of the turkey with either butter or vegetable oil (that's what I use. The fats help to brown the skin). Next season the skin with whatever you like( I personally just like to use pepper and that's all). Cover with tin foil and bake in 350 degree oven, For every 4 pounds cook one hour (So again for example: a 12 pound turkey would take 3 hours). Remove the tin foil 30 minutes before done, for browner skin. Always good to use a thermometer in inner thigh ( do not touch the bone for accuracy) Safe temperature for turkey is 165 degrees for doneness
@jimgarrett7131, we are adding a video next week about how we cook our turkey for Thanksgiving. Thank you for your kind words. We appreciate you subscribing to our channel.
I made this fruit salad for my family and they really enjoyed it.Thank you friend for sharing this delicious recipe with everyone.May God bless you Friend.🙏👍
Oh we do this in my family with just a couple differences . I’m from NC. We used crushed pineapple instead of chunks and then we use sour cream instead of cool whip. It sounds weird but the sour cream gets sweet from everything else and is so so good. Love how we all have variations on these special recipes.
My Aunt Blanche made this quite often for Sunday Dinner dessert but she made it a lot different than you folks do......a can of fruit cocktail drained, pecans, coconut, mini marshmallows, Jell-O- any variety made and partially set up, then you put the remaining ingredients in and fold in gently with cool whip. So delicious
My mother-in-law taught me to make this! We made it a tiny bit differently -- crushed pineapple instead of chunk, and SOUR CREAM instead of Cool Whip! It cuts just a little of the sweetness and gives the coverage like you describe. And my husband made it a six cup salad by adding pecan pieces! Thanks for bringing back a great memory!
My Mom and Aunt made this every thanksgiving! After she died I was trying to carry on the tradition. I looked everywhere for the proper recipe, but she called it “heavenly hash!” It was just like your recipe except she added fruit cocktail as well. I’m so happy to see someone else that’s aware of this dish, so I don’t feel crazy! Thank you 😊
I love butter. My mother made butter from the cream of the top of the milk. One Sunday my mother set the table for Sunday dinner. I grabbed the butter off the table and sat under the table to eat it. My mother just like yours asked what are you doing. So from that day on the butter was the last item to be set out on the table. Good memories.
That is how I make it with tidbits and sour cream. All are measured by the sour cream container . Refridgerate 24 hours. My first husband tought me to make it. He was a chef.
I love Watergate salad ❤😊 This also looks delicious. My granny always made me Watergate salad for Thanksgiving’s. She added chopped pecans also. So delicious 😊
You clearly have a bunch of videos in the bank, especially because it’s November already. I loved this salad. We called this ambrosia salad. It was definitely a great salad to take to potlucks and church dinners. I love how you share bites. 🇨🇦❤️
My grandmother made a similar recipe more than 50 years. Sour cream, pineapple, mandarin orange segments, mini marshmallows, and coconut. If she wanted to get fancy she would add marachino cherries. The canned coconut was sweeter. It always was even better if you let it sit a day. I still make it but i use two cans of mandarin oranges. And only a little coconut because i hate getting it between my teeth. My grandmother called it wedding salad.
5:27 Melissa, you read my mind about the cherries. I like cherries so ... That does look delish! Very similar to the fruit salad I make... I use fruit cocktail, mandarin orange, coconut, mini marshmallows and Cool whip.😊
My mother in law made a salad like this. Pineapple, cherries, cut up figs, bananas, apples, oranges and cool whip. She made it for every dinner that was special.
This was my grandmother’s favorite. She also included maraschino cherries and some sour cream. Or, you can add green grapes instead of cherries. Yum. Thanks for the memories.
Hello there from middle Tennessee! My grandma used to be this salad at Thanksgiving and Christmas! Someone she would add apples and grapes for special company! Lol. Hope you have a blessed weekend and Thanksgiving 🦃. Love & Prayers from a granny from Tennessee 💜🙏🌷💕🍁🍂🎃🦃
My mom's version was different, but had for EVERY holiday. Pineapple, mandarins, maraschinoes, bananas & sour cream all mixed day or 2 before. My kids still have to have it when we do get together. Memory lane for sure 😊
My mother worked nights as a nurse in the local hospital for years and this was her go to dish for get togethers with family or potlucks. It was so easy to fix. The only thing different she did was replace the whipped cream with sour cream. Every one love it.
My mom made this with drained fruit cocktail (Melissa with cherries😊) and a tablespoon of mayonnaise with the cool whip. Grandma made it with nuts as well. Good memories of all the holidays🌹
Hi Melissa and Tom. Glad to see you back from your time away. Hope you are well and relaxed. My grand children eat the marshmallows first too, and steal everyone else's. They won't eat pineapple. Duh! Who dosent like pineapple? 😊❤❤❤
My mother made this for both Christmas and Thanksgiving. She always made me a separate bowl without coconut because I couldn't eat it! Sweet memories! Thanks for sharing!
I love this salad and am so happy to be reminded of it. The story about your picking out the marshmallows is so cute and funny. Thanks for a great idea!
Grew up eating this delicious salad. I make this at least 2 - 4 times a year. My grown sons & grandchildren love it. We call it Ambrosia and like many people commented I use sour cream instead of cool whip. I also cut up some marchino cherries and add them for color. The kids fight over who gets the most cherries. :)
Tom, I always learned this making Sour Cream and you let it chill for at least an hour before serving. It is very good. I love watching you and listening to your conversations with your wife.
August? Wow, did not know that y’all record that far in advance. Thank you for this recipe. Have not had that salad in a very long time, but it brings back some great memories. Truly appreciate what y’all do.
Love this salad and it definitely brings back pleasant memories. Like someone else mentioned, I use sour cream instead of the cool whip. It balances out the sweetness of the other ingredients, but the cool whip sounds yummy as well. Thanks for the trip down memory and. :-)
This salad does bring back memories! I'm more health-conscious these days but still love to add pineapple or other fruit to salads--mandarin oranges are a great color for Thanksgiving. And to this day carrot salad is one of my favorites - with the original raisin, or dried cranberries.
Oh this brings back memories! I love this salad. My sister always made this for Thanksgiving. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe with us. I'm so excited. 🥰🥰
My mother always added canned Queen Anne cherries to this, and they are a delicious addition. This was part of our regular Thanksgiving feast. It was so special we usually did not eat it at any other time of year than the holiday season.
I think I'll make a double batch of this for Thanksgiving. As the great grandmother I try to bring a little something - usually it is the rolls and then I make gravy cause no one else knows how. But this would be great - thanks loads for the idea.
My Mom always made 5 Cup salad for all Holidays. At Christmas she put cherries in it, and if she had Pecans, she put them in it, too. Mom used crushed pineapple. She used sour cream, not cool whip. So good.
Just made this. November 26th, 2023. I was going to make it for thanksgiving, but I was just way too tired to make anything else. So, I made it today. LOVE IT!!!
My mom made this with mandrin oranges, fruit cocktail, bananas, mircle whip salad dressing, whipped cream,& small marshmallows.(The white ones). It was a favorite one for us all!(Yumm! Now I've got to make some!!). Never tried it with sour cream.(Will have to try that!). Thanks for all the tips!!
One salad we always had for our holiday meals!! It’s a great recipe that I hadn’t thought of in a very long time!! Will certainly add it to our Thanksgiving meal!!
Every time I am looking for a dish for a church dinner, you come up with the answer! This salad goes to church Friday night! Maybe for the family Christmas party as well!
Brings me back to my youth. Lovely treat! One thing I do with these kinds of recipes is to use my very large bowl to mix. Then transfer to serving bowl. Much easier but another bowl to wash
😋😋😋 I will definitely make this for our Thanksgiving table!!! I've made something similar called "dreamcycle salad" but, never this! Thanks so much! Blessings from Arizona.
Hello from Kentucky on this Monday morning. We are so happy to be a small part of your Thanksgiving celebration. Have a wonderful holiday season! Thank you so much for watching our channel.
This is great!!! This can be perfect for something to take to a dinner if you’re busy and no time to bake. Thanks for sharing and Tom , thanks for sharing your memories. The more I watch you guys I feel like I’m getting to know you better. Lol and thank you for the recipes.
From my family to yours, thank you. I knew of this dish, but never knew the name or ever thought of making it until this video. Yesterday, Thanksgiving, my youngest and I made this replacing the coconut with cherries. This dish was the #1 hit...so simple. Happy Thanksgiving 😊😊
Tom , I do make this for my children in the holidays thank you for sharing . I have noticed that our parents really made simple dish’s but they really made a favorite list on our books 😊❤ . Happy Holidays y’all
I always make this and use sour cream, pineapple tidbits, mandarin oranges, mini marshmallows and coconut. Add chopped walnuts on top. ( and cherries if you wish). So excellent!!!!!!!
The liquid from the pineapple and the mandarin oranges can be heated up with cornstarch or tapioca to make a delightful sauce for a cake or pie.
Or even some sort of drink with Malibu rum would be delicious
Thanks for sharing this. I did not know that. I'll give it a try.
Excellent idea! Also, it can be added to smoothies.
I learned this recipe from my Grandmother, as all of her family did. I have made this many times over the years with one addition. I add a whole jar of drained and dried cherries to the mix. No so pink after draining and drying them, but adds beautiful color and taste.

Yup...Ambrosia salad , sometimes with apples and whipped cream instead of cool whip.
My grandma used to make this with crushed pineapple, fruit cocktail, sour cream, coconut flakes . And mini marshmallow ( the colored kind) it’s delicious especially after it sits overnight in frig.
I really prefer it with crushed pineapple, but it still has to be drained really well. And I like mine with chopped walnuts.

Just made this. November 26th, 2023. I was going to make it for thanksgiving, but I was just way too tired to make anything else. So, I made it today. LOVE IT!!!
I really like the taste of the coconut!!!!
I like to let it set for a couple of hours at least...it makes the marshmallows a little softer and "melty"!! 😋
Good plan - if you can resist for that long! 😊 It's such a temptation to get "just a small bowl's worth" out!
I made this for our Thanksgiving day desert and everyone loved. First time I ever made it, thank you for sharing! Happy Thanksgiving!
Cherries, red and green 🍏 s mix cool whip and sour cream and pecans, wonderful thing is add what you like, TFS..
Peaches are my favorite. Thank you for this recipe.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😁😁😁🤩🤩🤩✔️
I grew up eating this. I love it. My brother and i compete to see who can make the best changes to the recipe. We always agree the original is best.
I know it's called 5 cup salad, but extra cool whip is always better. Heck extra everything is better.
My mom made this exactly like you but add maraschino cherries to it. We call it Ambrosia salad. Thanks for the memory.
Hey friends. I think everyone has their own way of making this salad but have to say I like the looks of yours so refreshing. TFS God Bless
My mom added maraschino cherries and we called it Ambrosia salad. It is very good.
Mom would fix five cup salad for special occasions. It was always such a treat. Thanks for the memory,
You two are wonderful ! Memories of good home cooked food, stories, love your presentation. My mother always used sour cream instead of cool whip
Every time I am looking for a dish for a church dinner, you come up with the answer! This salad goes to church Friday night! Maybe for the family Christmas party as well!
My favorite, I love it when we have ham for Christmas.
Brings me back to my youth. Lovely treat! One thing I do with these kinds of recipes is to use my very large bowl to mix. Then transfer to serving bowl. Much easier but another bowl to wash
Hello Julianne 👋
How are you doing today?
Oh My Goodness...I am addicted to your recipes and the background stories you tell about them 😊 !!!
This is one of my favorite salads. Love, love, love.
Yum! What makes this better is some cottage cheese and a package of vanilla pudding mix just poured into the cool whip. Delish-ious!
Can’t wait to try this 5 cup salad. Thanks for sharing.
The colored marshmallows have a fruity flavor that adds to the salad. Very good recipe.
Easy peasy! And delicious!
Kids love it!
😋😋😋 I will definitely make this for our Thanksgiving table!!! I've made something similar called "dreamcycle salad" but, never this! Thanks so much! Blessings from Arizona.
