- Here is one of several tracks from Studio Jams Episode #47, taped "On The Road" in Gothenburg, Sweden. An original tune by guitarist Soren Reiff called "Funky Mama." It features Soren on guitar, Jannik Jensen on bass, Pontus Engborg on drums, Mattias Bylund on keyboards and, from Nashville, TN, Tracy Silverman on electric violin. For more on the series, go to www.StudioJams.com.
This is actually Kirk Hammett's best performence
hahhah wtff
LOL I'm dyin
Lol
all these years when Ronnie James Dio said he was just goin' off to the spa...he was actually honing his jazz violin chops....
Dam it dude you beat me to it I was fixing to say that ' Kirk Hammett sure plays a mean fiddle' lmao!
The drummers expression at 1:46... I can sympathise :)
very wise of them to keep a fire extinguisher at hand!
I just watched a video of a guy making a violin sound like a wah scratch. I can go to sleep now.
That's no surprise when he looks like Kirk Hammet.
He actually has a cry baby :)
That electric violin sounds incredible
Rocking! Bassist in particular, for me, was rock-solid and driving.
Yes! And his embellishments were sweet~!~!~!~
...GOOD--GOD--ALMIGHTY...
The "Funk Factor" was so high in that studio that it fried the Funk Meter...
Amazing!!
What a cool jam!! So nice to see the effect of good communication within the group before playing …. And listen to the space and interaction between all musicians… Everyone is focused and connected because you don’t really know how it will come out… This is a good example of how to experience to live in the now… Great track Love it!
Thank you so much for sharing your observations :-) Truly appreciated.
@@SorenReiff sure no probs! You guys for keeping real music alive
Wow! Kirk Hammett playing violin! Who would've known...?
I’ve come back to this song so many times since I’ve first heard it. The keyboard has really grown on me as I’ve listened to this song more; really subtle, yet adds so much atmosphere.
My thoughts exactly! Brings to mind .......... ~ Less ...... is .............. more ~ ~!~
Oh yes - he is a killer ... and a super nice guy as well!!
@@SorenReiff That’s super nice to know. Awesome playing and tune as well man!
@@viscose_matt Thank you very much :-)
I love the bass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!just flows easy and groovy😎😎👊
This is a special group of musicians. Such a great cohesion and vibe. Looping. Subscribed.
MakeMoreMusicOk I’m so glad to read this - thank you very much:-)
Song starts at 4:22 -- for anyone wanting to skip ahead
I just uploaded a post at my blog about how I wrote this tune: reiff.dk/blog/making-music/writing-music-funky-mama/ - enjoy :-)
awesome
how do you get your lead sound in the video? there's an effect in there that i can't quite figure out
It's the drive from my old Triaxis mesa Boogie, and some delay and reverb ... maybe I've add a little modulation to the delay, that's all :-)
well done very well!
Thanx to the max :-)
Yup, this is one of my favorites from the Studio Jams series. Thanks for publishing/creating it, and a thumbs-up to all the musicians. This brought a smile to my face as well...
Thank you so much!!
Fantastically written and played...top job everyone...thank you!
Thanks a lot Tom - actually I did make a post about the writing of the song ... you'll find it here: reiff.dk/making-music/writing-music-funky-mama/
what is the specific wah wah pedal that is being used?
Why does he have frets on his violin ? :|
I´d like to know too
somebody get a leash, this groove is out of control
4:20
Blaze it
Thanks for making that. Was awesome and brought a smile to my face.
2:24 holy shit the funk is so strong on this 15 seconds
Nobody pointed out that the violin has frets? And a double set of tuning heads? One on the bridge one on the head stock? Is that even strung as a violin?
no frets, just markers.
I used to tinker around with the fiddle, my friends say I used to ~ stinker ~ around lol, but violins are strung with: G, D, A, E and tuned to perfect 5ths ( I'll drink anything that comes in a fifth!) Just kiddling around!!!!
Funky Cats!!!
The Bassist is insane 👌🏿
Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
Thank you :-)
This band. Seriously...its so much about the way people play together. The best group Ive ever heard being put together, Impromptu. Massive hats off to the engineering too. Makes them sound live.

Thanks to the max Denise!!
he's playing in dorian?
I think it's mixed up with mixolidian, and some other extra dissonances used as passing notes.
thanks
No He's playing in the Netherlands I think.
Some bluesy stuff ... and I add some melodic minor in the guitar solo ... glad you like it :-)

That snare drum hit failed at 5:50 - 5:51
I know right??
+THE ENGINEERS PROJECT that drummer isnt good
You failed from 0:00 to Obituary.
That drummer is FUNKY for a WHYTE GUY and playing that 5/4 turn around in the hook with those accents isnt easy.....He did a damn good job ...
REDEEMED at 8:32 with tgat badazz fill.....There is a reason he got the call to play this.......CAUSE HE CAN PLAY....
great! RESPECT FROM POLAND!
Amazing, amazona, amazing.
Amazing, amazing, amazing.
Nice! I love it!
What scale does the guitarist use on 6:34?
You sure it's 6:34? That's just some weird quick chromatic thing. Maybe check again.
I guess I was using some B melodic minor over an E9 :-)
Soren Reiff Ah thanks! I really like the flavour. Great playing
Thank you !!!
smokin .... :)
So Kirk Hammet can leave the guitar, but cant leave the wah
Oh...because hair. I just puked on my shoes.

+Ayoub Fnizi E7
Guitar solo sound could be better doesnt sound like a Gibson. But a nice jam tune.
Glad you like the tune :-)
@Zack Schorr I'm playing PRS now :-)
@@SorenReiff I wanted to ask you if my favorite guitarist, Larry Carlton (LOL Carl-Tone!) influenced your style?!?! I've studied Larry's style for many years, and finally,, I've reached a high level of accomplishment. I fell in love with Larry's playing years ago after his album, "Strikes Twice" came out in 1981! I have devoted all my attention to learning his string bending, sliding in and out of target notes, his arpeggio and color tone notes are very difficult to learn, as I'm sure you already know! LOL! I really enjoyed listening to both this video, and your album songs on apple music! best wishes to you and keep on making music Soren!!! God bless!!!
@@newmoon54 Thank you so much for yourt positive words. Yes back in the days Carlton was a big influence - his and Robben Ford's phrasing were truly inspiring, so it's understandable you can hear some similaties in the overall approach :-) You're mentioning my albums - thank you!! Hope you're aware of my own youtube channels ... I have two, and one of them is mainly in Danish, but with a lot of playing ... the other one is in English :-) ua-cam.com/users/sorenreiff
I see Eric Clapton is playing bass🤣
Would have been fun to have EC with us!!
@@guitarttimman Thanks for sharing your thoughts and story ... it's easy to mix styles ... but not always the right thing to do :-)
@@SorenReiff it's good to learn how to play different ways, but, you're right, every musician should find the one that fits them and stick with it. I just think it would be cool to see Eric play some Jazz Fusion. That shut up all of the doubters.
@@SorenReiff hey man it was all in fun, but people nowdays are crazy. If you can't play fusion they think you're not all that great. In reality, I'm a fan of EC's. I know he has the ability to do it. I just wish that he'd make a video of him playing some fusion stuff so that he could shut everyone's mouth. I know Jimmy Page can do it. I seen him do it way back in the 70's, but he didn't want to do too much because he didn't want to tarnish his hip image. Behind the scene, JP used to play Jazz Standards, and he played FUSION with John Mclaughlin. Google it. JP actually learned Fusion from John way back in the 70's, but he wanted that reckless rock image because that's his cash cow.🤣
@@guitarttimman Actually I saw Clapton with Sanborn, Gadd, Marcus Miller ... in a contemporay set up together ... it worked totally fine - great musicians.
But I get you ... if you say fusion it is like swearing :-)
2:03 "Oh shit not again"
Ha ha ... ;-)
excellent
+Hany Elmaidomy Thanks a lot!!!!
Where do these studiojams take place? I would love to take part somehow
+zack white *ok... this one took place in Sweden* but I'm so jealous still...
