She is so graceful. She looks more like a ballet dancer with her arm and hand movements. She is so much better than any skater in the Olympics in 2022. Current skaters are all flashy costumes and quad jumps. Janet Lynn is one of the greats!
PERFECTION AT IT'S BEST! Skating has certainly evolved from that era till today. Janet and Dorothy had similar style from what I can see. But then again, figures were an important part of their training. And such is evident in their FIGURE skating. Incredible edges! Janet skated with us as a "guest star" in the Ice Capades when playing L.A. during our final city on the East Coast tour of 1982. She was absolutely mesmerizing. The audiences LOVED her! What a memorable experience to see her on ice. A grand finale for my last year with Capades.
The current elite skaters could take a page from Janet Lynn's playbook. She combined athlete prowess with musicality and grace. Was that really a routine just skated, or did she just step out on the ice and dance from her heart? I've never seen such effortless skating, she was a wonder.
This does send shivers. Janet Lynn is The Sound of Music. A thought. Artistry may not be central in today's Olympic competition & Worlds, but there can be no true figure skating without it. Perhaps we'll see effectively two separate competitions, each its own. Similar in swimming; there's freestyle, butterfly, medley... In track, you've got the decathlon. Individual events. Today's skating, to avoid the 6.0 system which was fraught w/bias, now has evolved into an accumulation of points which is the reward for a packed program. Spirals & pure lines are not rewarded as much. Can see skating as a sport evolving into two separate contests to save itself & reward skaters who are great in each area.
I only recently became aware of Janet Lynn. I was very little when she was at her peak. She is one of the most beautiful ice skaters I have ever seen perform. She was robbed gold medals at the Olympics because she wasn't good at the compulsories I understand. Too bad because she is revered by so many of the ladies figure skaters who came after her for good reason. I see alot of Janet Lynn in Michelle Kwan's later performances 20 years later. Another fine US skater who never won Gold at Olympics. Shame.
Janet Lynn's teeth change every ten years. These teeth were supplied by Chatham dentist, Dr. Oliphant who placed sheers on the front two teeth. His receptionist stated afterwards, "You realize that you are one of Dr. Oliphant's last patients...he is losing his eyesight." Linda Rondstat experienced the same two front teeth addition. I think they are cute. But, would be replaced later on.
It was probably a good thing all of her teeth fell out after our second nuclear war with the Soviet Union in 1983. Her seemingly neverending struggle with plaque psoriasis, which dated back to her Grenoble days, also ceased to be a major issue.

Omg she skated with grace and elegance. Perfect as if she was skating on air. Such a joy to watch ❤️
There are people that don't believe angels exist. Watch Janet a few times and get back to me.
No one till this day skates like her . The smoothness is incredible

Best layback and attitude spins ever.
So glad I found this. Janet is proof that angels exist.
She is so graceful. It is a miracle to watch her skate. I don’t know if she remembers me but we were playmates for a short time when we were young.
Valieva and Co. do not hold a candle artistically to Janet Lynn.

This event isn't around anymore.
@Darthestar Three hours a week! And what about that combo?
What is Janet Lynn doing these days since she retired from skating ?
