  • No fully complete footage seems to exist of Janet's LP from Bratislava. So I have made a montage of all the different sources I have to re-create her complete performance. There was always talk of whether Karen or Janet won the LP here (for the record Janet won the LP but Karen won the first ever combined SP and LP as well as the World title.) Karen's LP is already out there in its entirety and she skated brilliantly. Janet, as you will see, isn't absolutely at her best but the quality of her skating and the material is still mesmeric.
    My apologies for the dreadful quality of one of the sources! But at least we now have the program in its entirety.

    She is always smiling. Even after the disaster in the short, she went out there and had such a beaming, infectious smile that showed everyone there was nothing else she would rather be doing.

    She's notable to me for the position of her legs in the jumps. She had the balletic cross leg which is necessary to to consistent and consistently beautiful triples. Jumpers in her day didn't get "up and over", but she did. Compare her jumping to Hamill's, whose legs would never have survived triple jumps. Her double axel was huge but she kept her legs next to each other instead of crossing them at the ankles. They learned so much about jumping since this time. Had Lynn come out today she would have been a champion. Sandra Bezic said that Lynn is her favorite skater as she had everything that the judge's wanted organically. She also changed the sport as the short program was created almost completely because of her.

    ease, flow, grace! spirit in movement. Janet embodies classic figure skating. Her technical excellence can be missed because the seamless integration of technique and artistry makes it look so natural. Brava!

    A snippet of her 1973 World's short program including the two missed double axels in the short program can be seen in "Magic Memories on Ice." In my opinion, Janet must have been extremely nervous during the short program. Both the difficulty of the double axel's forward-edge take-off and the pressure-cooker of a short program got the best of her. Janet was never used to being in gold medal contention so in a way never got to experience that kind of pressure before. Even Michelle Kwan who had had experiences with such pressure caved a few times.

    her choreography is timeless; skaters today have far too much excessive head, arm, and leg movements, moving every second as if incapable of keeping still. like curry in 1976 there is no unnecessary movement. simplicity, clean lines, fluidity and grace are the highest and best forms of artistry

    At the 1973 World's the ISU introduced the Short Program. The Figures were worth 40% of the overall score with the Short Program worth 20% and the Long Program worth the final 40%. Medals were given for the Figures; the Freeskating (Short and Long combined) and Overall. Karen Magnussen won all three gold medals. Janet Lynn won the Long Program, but because she fell twice in the Short, Karen won the Freeskating overall. The marks for Magnussen in the long program were
    Technical: 5 x5.9 + 4 x 5.8
    Artistic: 6 x 5.9 + 3 x 5.8
    In the video of Magnussen's long program she performs the Magnussen spiral which in the recent past was a required move in the Ladies short program under the old scoring system.
    Back then each judge's marks were cumulative so the marks given to a skater in the figures, short, and long were added up and then at the end the ordinals were then determined. Magnussen won first place votes from all nine judges for the overall score. That includes a first place vote from the American judge. Lynn won second place votes from all nine judges whilst Christine Errath of East Germany won third overall ahead of Dorothy Hamill who outskated Errath in the freeskating portion.
    Magnussen and Lynn retired from the amateur ranks after the 1973 World's, but they were still relatively young and easily could have gone on to the 1976 Olympics. Had they both done so it is very unlikely that Dorothy Hamill would have won the Olympics.
    I read that Karen Magnussen was also doing triple jumps successfully in practice and probably would have had one or two in her long program had she continued on after 1973.

      I wish Janet had continued on. She had health problems, though, and a big pro contract. Her health eventually prevented her from finishing her pro skating at that time. She came back to skate in the pro competitions in the early 80s and the magic was still there.

      I don't know about Lynn but Magnussen had already been on the scene quite awhile and dealt with some major injuries by this point. I doubt she could have hung for 76 realistically.

    The height and distance she gets on that double lutz at around 1:01 leaves little doubt that she could have done triples if she had trained them. Much of the training time in this era went into figures. This is my favorite performance by Janet--free skating at its absolute best. I wish there were a better video of it.

    • @ilovebeinagirl

      She did a triple in competition. I think it was in her '68 or '69 FS.

    • @fitgraphisva
      @fitgraphisva 4 роки тому +3

      I was thinking the same thing. She had only marginal success with the 3T and the 3S, but she got so much height on her lutz, it looked like a third rotation would be easy on that jump. Her US Nationals performance is available, and she skated clean in that program, including both 2As, the second of which she missed here. But this program seems to have much more emotion than her Nationals program.

    I read that Janet was having a lot of breathing problems, asthma I think, during this event. Such a shame that she never won World gold. But she is gold to me in terms of her skating skills, musicality and joy on the ice. No one, before or since, skates like she did.

    この大会はTBS系のゴールデンタイムに放送された。優勝したマグヌセンが、やや太り気味で動きが重かったのに対し、リンは札幌五輪よりも高度なプログラムを消化出来ていた。彼女の演技を観てしまうと、他の選手がつまらなく感じてしまう。天才としか言いようが無い。

    None of that full court run and jump for Janet. She had the power and grace to throw a jump in anywhere she wanted, if she had wanted. When she signed with the Ice Follies, she was the highest paid female athlete in the world.

    Yes , Janet Lynn is one of the skating immortals. At the risk of aggravating the skating community, I offer that she did not skate her best when it counted (as in for gold). She had problems at the Olympics; also the ISU added the short program for her and yet she did not make it happen. So yes, she was wonderful, but could not put it all together when she had to. I'm glad we have these videos to remind us of skating's golden era.

    • @Person-mh6xq
      @Person-mh6xq 2 роки тому +4

      Not true. She “skated her best” in 1970, 1971, 1972 Worlds, winning the free skate all three times. Her short program in 1973 was a fluke of a disaster considering her double axel was extremely reliable and consistent. Then she won the long program in 1973 as well. Four consecutive years winning the free skate at Worlds.

      Small little slip, loss of balance. Probably didnt cost her anything as it was a very minor mistake and didnt really break the flow of the program.

    Again, I understand and my comments are directed towards US television etc. ABC in particular loved to show the odd mistake by Karen M. and Dick Button in particular was unfair to Karen M. as was Janet Lynn at times with some rather mean comments about her competitor Karen. None of us are perfect as much as US media would like to herald. I admire you going to all that effort to post videos.
